A few fall outfits and more hair musings

Hi, all -- My fall has been exceptionally busy with teaching and a few short trips. Not to mention a big Covid scare....I was one of the few to escape at this super-spreader event. Keep healthy, everyone -- it's still out there!

On the fashion front, I have bought nothing apart from undies, a replacement packable puffer, and an exact replacement pair of booties. (The oyster Eccos.) I have, however, done a huge edit, letting go of numerous items for reasons of wear and tear or poor fit. I suspect I'll want to do a big shop next fall, and if I see a few suitable knits during sale times, I will jump, since my knitwear collection is diminishing.

I enjoyed Sal's hair musings thread.  And since I just chopped my hair into a super short pixie, I thought I'd chime in.

I don't think I've had my hair quite this short since 2022 (though I could be wrong, since I tend to give it a more thorough chop every 18 months or thereabouts.) I was inspired this time by my hairdresser herself and a good friend and I am enjoying the ease.

While I've worn different cuts over the years, some version of the pixie has been the one I always come back to. I started with it at age 6. ;)

A few early to mid fall outfits.....nothing really new or special. I wore the red pants in honour of a student whose personal essay was called....you guessed it... "The Red Pants."

Have you done a big edit or a real shop this fall? Have you made a change to your hair?

Thanks for looking!

Super adorable baby picture! Love your outfits - especially #2, #4, #6.
The haircut is fun - my pixie is almost as short ( when freshly cut ) with slight difference in forelocks - just a bit longer. Your silver hair is fabulous!
    I can't go without a trim every 2 month ( sometimes even 6-7 weeks
     ;-)  ).

Suz, good job dodging COVID, completing a meaningful wardrobe edit (liberating), duplicating winning boots, and for getting through a very busy schedule with style, good health, and grace! :)

KILLER new extra short 'do! Its silver colour makes it look more magical to my eye, and for your complexion. It amps up the chic panache!!

Outfits are especially radiant when you pick up your light hair somewhere in the outfit! That said, I also love #5 - the only look with no light neutral incorporation - which makes your light hair the focal point!

LOOK at that cutie patootie you as a baby! Fab to have a signature hairstyle.

  • Angie replied 3 weeks ago

ETA: The second best style decision you've made is going naturally grey. It looks SOOOO GOOD!

(To answer your questions: Yes and yes! Added fab fun things for my Autumn and Winter refresh! Almost complete, along with big hair chop. 7 inches are bye-bye and much relieved!)

  • Ket replied 3 weeks ago

I just adore your new haircut!!! I love seeing women rock pixies, especially when they have gorgeous silver hair like you do! My husband's great-aunt had a similar hair cut. And like you, she was always so effortlessly vivacious and modern. So, yay!

All of your outfits are just fab, yet for some reason I absolutely adore you in #3. I am probably biased, as I love a good chiffon blouse. And I have always loved the original dress you made it from, anyway. (It's my 2012 boho hipster self shining through as ever ha!!) Your red and cream outfits are equally beautiful. I like how you added the edgy jean jacket to #3 for some verve.

Great job on the edit! I sometimes find edits hard. However, this month I put a few items into a holding zone. Just didnt' love them or they didn't fit that well. I'll re-evaluate them next summer or fall perhaps. If I haven't worn them by then, I'll donate or resell them.

  • Lisa replied 3 weeks ago

Congrats on your big closet edit. It's always so refreshing to do a large overhaul of one's wardrobe. The new shorter hair is lovely on you! Perfect timing going into the holiday season. How fun that you had red pants to compliment your students essay! I also really like how the silver shoes in #3 pair with your hair, it's a lovely combination!

  • Dee replied 3 weeks ago

Super cute pixie SUZ, and an adorable photo of you as a child, love your bright smile.
Great fall combos too, it all mixes and matches so well, giving you such a fab variety of outfits. The red pant and scarf combo is especially radiant.

No editing happening this season, it was done in early summer. It was quite a thorough edit of items that were lingering unworn for far too long in my closet

Hair wise, I've settled on a short layered bob for now, but you never know when I'll get the urge to suddenly change it all. My hairdresser will be off on maternity leave, so I have an appointment in a couple of months with someone else who is replacing her. Always a little nerve racking trying someone new. Fingers crossed it works out okay

  • Suz replied 3 weeks ago

Oh, Dee, yes! New hairdressers are a bit intimidating! You never know how they will see you, or whether they will find the cowlicks in your hair before it is too late with the scissors!

And yes, I remember you did a big edit in the spring. This is my second year (or maybe 3rd?) to make a big edit and it does feel liberating, but I also know I'm going to have some wardrobe holes. Some of these items were going more or less unworn, but others were workhorses that were totally worn out, so it's hard to say how I will manage without them.

Lisa, thank you! Those shoes are the same as Carla's yellow ones, and I love them! They are one of the few sling backs that stay on my feet.

Ket, thank you...I am a big fan of the chiffon blouse, too. I don't wear it often but when I wear it, it's always the perfect thing.

Angie, thank you! Your haircut is so fab and fun! And your wardrobe refresh has been the best. Watching you for tips, as always.

Slim cat, thank you, fellow pixie-wearer! We are outliers in the world, as Sal pointed out -- so much long hair out there. But when it works...well...why mess with it?

  • LJP replied 3 weeks ago

Really nice cut, Suz. I had mine cut super short about 8 weeks ago now and am still recovering, lol.  It's sort of back to normal only now. Like you, it seems I have it cut really short every year or so, but usually regret it.    My hair is thinning rather alarmingly at the moment and I was feeling self conscious about my scalp showing through right after the last cut .  Eek.  As to a wardrobe edit, yes, in fact I did a pretty big one myself this summer and again for fall. All of a sudden a lot of pieces felt boring or dated (cropped flares anyone?).  I'm trying (not successfully) to get my wardrobe numbers WAY down, but I think I added in more this fall than ever before. Even footwear felt like it needed a refresh.  I ordered (but haven't worn yet) my first pair of Ecco boots a couple of weeks ago and look forward to wearing them. They are brown with black heels and are a little too heavy looking for indoor/warm fall (no snow in other words) wear which was disappointing but I think they'll be great for winter errand -running. They seem super comfortable.

  • JAileen replied 3 weeks ago

What a cute little girl!  My hair was quite short and now is a little longer.  I really need to make an appointment for a cut.  Your edit items make me sad - so many great things there.  If they aren’t working anymore, they do have to go, but still..   I haven’t weeded much out and my closet looks like a volcano erupting clothes.

  • Sal replied 3 weeks ago

Your hair looks fab Suz and it really suits your energy and style. And I love the formula for autumn that is working for you with the cropped pants and soft tailoring.

I think it’s a shame that younger women don’t try short hair and experiment more - don’t get me wrong - long hair is awesome and is perfect for lots of people. But it’s not the only way to look attractive or even feminine. But it’s a big topic…

I have let a few things go this year too. Here are mine. https://youlookfab.com/finds/c.....tion=14991

It’s mostly due to wear but a couple of pairs of shoes that are no longer comfortable. I expect a couple more will follow soon. A dress that was too soft for my preferences. And a couple of knitwear fit issues - too wide but too short is a common theme. I have been shopping steadily all year but expect to only add one or two more pieces the rest of the year.

Wonderful outfits. I cannot possibly pick a favourite. Your hair is your signature imo, the short pixie and the silver. Young you looks very, um, You :). Totally recognisable, so cute and still are. My hair colour is a bit of an issue currently as the temp colour I have been using has been discontinued. Now I need to make a decision about permanent colour again. As much as I love my silver colour my town and me are not ready for it.  I did buy a new sleeveless longer puffer vest in olive which has already proved itself.  At the end of Spring I bought some new items that did not get much wear at all that are now coming out to play.  Black sneakers, cream sneakers, an olive with black stripes mesh long sleeved top and and a long sleeved cream and black striped fleece sweater.  All proving to be very useful as well.  No more purchases for Autumn or Winter now, as I have no need right now. Lovely to see you posting pics again!

Hi Suz! Tried to reply this morning but lost it, internet a bit unreliable here in Saigon. I had my hair cut only yesterday, probably the shortest pixie ever as she had almost no English and I have only hello and thank you or some food items in Vietnamese. So it was a photo and gesturing! Incredibly cheap though, just over $10NZ, at home I pay $45, will drop to $40 senior price after I turn 65 next year. I usually prefer to get a cut every 6-8 weeks, this time was just under 8. Once this year it was 11 weeks for various reasons but I don’t feel good when it’s that long in between.
I had my first pixie at age 19, had varied between short and long until then. Varied again after that until age 35 and has been short ever since, almost 30 years now.

  • Brooklyn replied 3 weeks ago

You are looking fabulous as ever Suz. It’s interesting that your hair preferences got established so early! The new cut looks great.

I have been doing some serious editing since winter. I was feeling a bit overwhelmed. I am feeling better about my wardrobe now.

  • cat2 replied 3 weeks ago

This has been an odd year. I have been stranded between two sizes in my wardrobe and every day is a bit of an adventure finding out what fits. I packed up and am about to donate everything a size up from my current range and most will go to the thrift shop near where we have our cabin. Everything else is getting sorted slowly so I have just stuff that currently fits in my closet. The rest that is still too small will go back into storage. I really don’t know what to expect moving forward; this aging stuff has more twists and turns than I expected! I donated a bunch of shoes when my feet got wider, then I lost some foot volume and some of the wider shoes I kept are now too wide in the heel. I guess my lesson from the year is not to make any assumptions and don’t try to plan ahead too much. And to find another outlet for my planning and organizing energy.

  • Suz replied 3 weeks ago

cat2, I hear you on the fit issues! Even when my weight hasn't changed much, I find that fits can change more than they used to for me -- or maybe it is a matter of preferences. The Hobbs coat and jacket I am letting go, for instance -- they are still in great shape and I still love them, but they just feel too restrictive in the shoulder and I don't reach for them as a result. Someone else will enjoy them more. Meanwhile, some of the shoes I'm letting go feel too wide, too narrow, etc. in ways they did not before. What with all that, and some things being worn out, It's a constant shuffle.

Brooklyn, thank you! Your wardrobe is so amazing, but you have such a gift for picking iconic pieces that I can imagine edits might become more difficult. Those amazing, perfect for you hero items are super hard to let go of -- much harder than essentials. I have some pieces like that -- I can't say goodbye to them -- and the more of them I collect, the harder edits become. Yet without a good edit, everything can start to feel stale.

Jenni, super cute haircut! I once got a cut in Italy in a barber shop. It was quite an experience, so I can imagine...I also don't feel good if I have to wait too long between cuts, but sometimes (Covid period) it happens. I'd say 30 years equals a signature style for you!

Lise, I've also had that experience of buying things at the end of one season that turn out to be surprising workhorses a few seasons on. And I end up loving them all the more because I'm always congratulating myself on my foresight for picking them up when I did, especially following on what might have been a bit of guilt for not wearing them the season they were purchased!

It is so interesting that dyed hair is the norm in your area.  Even though people are freer to dye or not dye here (at least in my social circles) I can understand that pressure and if dye still looks good, then why not enjoy it? But it is indeed frustrating when a product you love is discontinued. I hope you will be able to source an alternative.

Sal, thank you! I checked out your edits and am sobbing to see that navy blouse go -- I have always loved that one on you! And think it was such a terrific find. I also find it interesting that you are gravitating to jackets vs. knits after some disappointments in the knits department. Knits definitely age faster than many other items and look less good more quickly if they are not well made to start.

JAileen -- yes, some great things going in that edit but remember, most of them do not look as pristine as they do in those photos -- or they don't fit. So onwards.

Lisa, my hair is also thinning. It used to be so thick it grew outwards (no joke -- I have the photos to prove it) but in the last 3 years I have noticed a huge change, and as my hair is also fine, it's distressing. My hairdresser tells me it is still plenty thick in places and she is right -- she still has to thin and texturize to create a decent cut-- but I find that it's thinning in the part area and it makes me self-conscioius. And looks worst while wet, of course. I find super short tends to hide that problem a little more efficiently for me, and maybe something else about the cut helps to make it look thicker temporarily as it grows in. I'm also investigating shampoos for fine hair. I never used them before -- I was more concerned about frizziness. But I think I might experiment a bit with those.

  • LJP replied 3 weeks ago

It's because my hair is dark right now that I worry about the scalp show-through.  If it's not one thing, it's something else.  I use hair growth supplements , collagen, and special shampoo and I'm not convinced any of it makes one iota of difference.  And I know what you mean about growing outwards - mine did too!

  • Irina replied 3 weeks ago

You look fab, Suz! I adore your outfit in #2, so chic.

I don’t know much about short hair styles. I’ve always thought that in short cuts it is so important to have a nicely shaped and proportional head. Yours looks great, imo. Thinning hair is one of challenges in growing older. My hair has never been full to begin with, unfortunately.

  • Karie replied 3 weeks ago

Adorable childhood photo! A pixie is the perfect style for you. My hair has gotten longer and it’s driving me crazy- I think I need to go back to a shorter style.
Your outfits, as always, are fabulous.

  • Jaime replied 3 weeks ago

Love the super short hair on you Suz! Young Suz clearly already had discernment and a sense of self. I recently had my hair cut back to a version of its old asymmetrical cut. Nothing else quite works for me. The big edit will come when it gets a bit cooler here. Did you feel like you were just editing for poor fit and wear, or is a bigger change afoot?

  • Runcarla replied 3 weeks ago

You look absolutely fantastic in your ‘fit photos, and the tweak to your crop suits you - as does any iteration of the style that is your signature.  The colour is enviable - though I did think it was fun when you added some blue bits!

I did a 5 piece summer refresh that boosted my spirits - and my closet.  The items felt very ‘me’, and they all got lots of wear.

Frankly, feeling a little lost going into F/W.  It’s turning out to be a ‘low-buy’ year - yet I’ve been editing due to wear and tear.  Wardrobe has grown quite small.  Got my bob trimmed Friday (after 3 months).

I feel like I’m treading water style wise, and need a reset of some sort.

  • Bonnie replied 3 weeks ago

Your pixie and fall outfits look great. Great job editing your wardrobe and missing covid. I really need a haircut and have an appointment in November and I've just changed over to my fall/winter/spring wardrobe today. Will miss what little warm weather we have but love the outfits that work for cooler/colder weather so it's all good. I really don't need anything because I took advantage of last year's end of season sales and have some new things to wear this year.

  • Sal replied 3 weeks ago

Suz - the navy top got a stain on it and sadly was beginning to fade as well. It is one I am sad to see go too. I love tops that sit on the waistband.

  • Peri replied 3 weeks ago

My whole post on grey was a big change! But I left out that I also have gone a lot shorter, so that was a change for the better I think. Not a pixie, but a short bob very much like Angie's recent posts. The grey as you know is a struggle, and thanks for your wonderful response to that post, but the cut is a happy thing.

A clothing edit is on the horizon and that is definitely not my favorite thing. But I have to think a lot about that color issue so many suggested in my post.

  • Suz replied 2 weeks ago

Peri, I am hopeful you will show us your new cut! That sounds like a fantastic change, and I think it will make it easier to incorporate new colours as you adjust to the grey. Also, as a fellow scarf lover...that is both an easy way to try out some new-to-you tones AND a lot easier to incorporate easily into outfits with shorter hair. One reason I wear scarves is like Janet I'm a sucker for colour and some patterns but another reason is for warmth in winter -- not just outside but also inside -- and that is something you don't need as much with longer hair. But with a chin length cut, you will feel an actual need!

Sal, still sobbing. I hope you find a brilliant update for that top.

Carla, thank you -- and I am feeling similar! A little bit lost in the fall. I have plenty of clothes to make great outfits. And don't absolutely *need* very much (if anything, at the moment.) This is turning out to be a low buy year for me, too, at least so far. And with several big edits over the past few years, the closet is getting smaller. Still huge in comparison to yours, I know, but fewer options for me, for sure. Anyway, maybe we can together cook up a challenge to get our fashion ideas firing? That might be fun. Not that I have any ideas at the moment.

Jaime, I always love your asymmetrical cut. If it works....and it works!! You ask a good question and maybe my response to Carla half answers it. I was truly editing for fit, comfort, and wear and tear and less for style. Still....I'm not sure. Like Carla, I feel I am treading water fashion-wise right now and maybe the shift is on its way. It may just take one or two fresh additions to help me switch things up and adjust. Hard to say.

    Karie, thank you!

Irina, thanks. And yes, they do say it is part of aging. I was hoping to avoid the thinning hair since my mother certainly avoided it -- but maybe I take after my dad more than her in that regard. Alas!

  • RobinF replied 2 weeks ago

Very satisfying to do a big edit! I’ve also done a bit of that lately, my closet was too full of mediocre items and was making me unhappy. Pixie works great for you, why mess with what’s working.

Love the outfits. Always fun and classic with a modern twist.

  • Helena replied 2 weeks ago

Suz your signature style is going strong and looks fab on you! Love the pixie, you wear it with the best of them. Such a cute little Suz photo! Xx

  • Janet replied 2 weeks ago

Super fun short pixie — you wear it well! Congrats on the edit and your outfits are true to you and stylish as always. I really like that stripe in 2 on you!

And how cute is that childhood picture! OMG you have the same brilliant smile.

I have been kicking the can down the road on a good closet edit for months. And now, walking the Camino, I can tell I have lost somewhere in the 5-10 lb range of weight, maybe on the upward end of that. It’s a good thing, I needed a bit of a reset as it’s been a very indulgent year, but it’s got me thinking that a closet edit when I get home will be very interesting. And wouldn’t you know I have some new Me+Em pants I bought on sale in recent months that I was already thinking would need some alteration because they were roomy — now they will be a full size or maybe more too big! Again, that’s ok. I’ll find out when I finish the Camino and go home!

  • Sisi replied 2 weeks ago

The pixie cut was made for you! It suits your pretty features and has a modern edgy vibe. Nice outfits - my favorite is # 4. After reading Angie's comment I understand why. What a pretty little girl! Sporting a signature style at 6, wow.

  • LJP replied 2 weeks ago

Interesting comment Angie made about pic#5. The eye absolutely goes straight to your gorgeous hair and the overall effect is very serene and -what word do I want? -yet focused and chic . Where the eye wanders a bit in other looks with say, white boots, a white top, etc.

  • Suz replied 2 weeks ago

That makes sense, Lisa. The hair becomes the focal point or the statement. I also think the long coat has a role to play there -- it has its own elegance. Maybe I can play with all dark more oten. I do in fact wear it about once a week, but almost always navy (rarely, charcoal). It might be good to add a few more dark neutrals.

Thanks, Janet -- and wow, sounds like you are having a great trip! It will be interesting to see your edit when you return.

    Thanks, Sisi, Robin, Helena!
