Ask Angie (and others) :Wedding update, what to wear?

I saw the barefoot bride's dress!!!

It is really, really cool.

It is basically a long tuxedo shirt!! She had it made by the tailor who is across the street from her workplace in Montreal. Knee length, a little longer in the back. A shift. Cotton, white on white with sateen-stripes, French cuffs, and pearl links. C'est tout!

It's nicer than the pictured one (I think). Not as exaggerated a hem, the buttons are all pearl, the collar is a wing tip. But you get the idea.

Picture her -- very tall (about 5'11), very, very slender. Rectangular body type with maybe teeny apple tendencies. She has dark brown eyes and wiry, curly dark brown hair which she typically wears pulled back. Pretty features.

Truly - I think she is going to freeze in this garment (today it was -14C here) but I have to admit it is really, really cool and will suit her down to the ground.

Very Urban Prince, in fact!

So. I am rethinking my what-to-wear based on this. My daughter is going to wear her "suit." And I am wondering if I could do the same: slouchy black trousers, tuxedo shirt, and blue Zara jacquard jacket. With some kind of sparkle in the form of earrings or whatnot. Maybe a cocktail type ring.

Here's my previous thread. http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....at-to-wear

Yes!  I think a wedding party full of Urban Princes sounds fantastic!!  :)

And also?  Crank up the heat!!!

  • replied 10 years ago

Yeah! Crank the heat and bring the Princes out to play!

  • pil replied 10 years ago

Oh, what an awesome idea for a dress. Not terribly warm, but still pretty amazing. Be sure to turn up that thermostat! I love your idea of the tuxedo shirt with slouchy trousers. What footwear are you thinking of? Your outfits will make for a great family picture.

  • Greyscale replied 10 years ago

That sounds entirely fabulous. I'd love to see photos when the event happens. Sounds like she has her own distinctive style.

  • Sveta replied 10 years ago

    Her dress sounds like fun!
I like the idea of tux shirt and slouchy trousers but will you wear the bronze booties? Please!!:-)

  • Mo replied 10 years ago

I like the idea of going 'princely' with your attire.  Last wedding I was at, there was a best woman instead of a best man and she looked great in the typical tuxedo!

  • minimalist replied 10 years ago

Aww, her love will keep her warm.

I love your idea ...and would run it by your DD first. If she's on board and doesn't feel like her look is being co-opted, cool!

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

    I love the wedding dress.

How about a tuxedo full stop.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Well, Angie, that would be completely brilliant, except I haven't got one and the wedding is on Saturday! :)

So I don't have time for that. As you know, I have been looking at tux jackets. But I did not order that Theory one because there was no return and I could not be sure of the size.  So...I think I will go with my nearest approximation, in the spirit of the thing.

And yes, Sveta, I will wear the bronze booties. Their first "outing."

Told you they would not get much wear in my lifestyle. But it is okay. Everybody deserves one special shoe.

  • Caro in Oz replied 10 years ago

I love the wedding dress too. I can't remember what dress pants you have Suz - something fluid with one of your fab knits? Or would that be too casual for you?

  • Jacky replied 10 years ago

Wow, that sounds awesome. That dress sounds really lovely, and your outfit idea sounds like it will work really well. Second the desire to see photos!

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

Ah. Well. How about a black turtleneck (scrunched sleeves), wide black trousers, dressy shoes and a pile of bling around your neck. That's what I'm going to wear to a holiday 'do tomorrow (pearls in my case).  Or I'll throw on my suit.

Or add the Zara jacket to the column of colour and leave off the bling.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

    Sounds gorgeous, Angie.

I don't have wide black trousers -- I have fluid baggy slightly slouchy wool ones, tapered.

I do have a black turtleneck.

I will either wear that (the column of colour with the Zara jacket). Or I will wear the tux shirt with the pants and Zara jacket.

Either way, I am pretty sure it will be fun. Thank you for the help!

PS. got the cream jeans (already) and they are keepers! Will post pics as soon as I am able.

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

Oh I love it! I hope they will let you post pictures. Yes a suit, what Angie says. So, so fabulous!

  • Elizabeth P replied 10 years ago

I would be a tad concerned you'd look too much like the bride, in your tux shirt. If you know she'd be honest, can you run it by her?

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Ah - I had not thought of that. Well...I think the look is actually quite different. Hers is all white, a dress, striped, without the bib front. My tux shirt is bib fronted, would be covered with a blue jacket, and worn with black pants.

But I can certainly run it by her. Maybe the black turtleneck is the way to go.

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

Suz, I meant your baggy black trousers. They are impeccable with the turtleneck. Tux shirt will be fab too. You're going to look killer perfect no matter what. So fun. xo

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Ah, okay! Thanks, Angie. I love wearing those trousers so that is a done deal. I will decide on the top on the day, maybe. I can see either working very well. And the bronze Pliner booties -- just to make Sveta smile.

  • Sveta replied 10 years ago

Oh, my cream jeans were just shipped today! Anyway I don't have much hope for the fit so not waiting really :-)
Angie, I like the sound of a black turtleneck and black trousers with dressy shoes with pearls (mine were quite orphaned this year). Maybe I should wear this for my birthday party this weekend as well?.. Is t-neck going to be tucked in with the belt or is it too much with the bling?

  • Sveta replied 10 years ago

And thanks for making me smile with the booties! :-)

  • Joy replied 10 years ago

I love the idea of your wearing something tux-like for this event. Could you wear your tux shirt with your slouchy pants and your blue jacket? I also wondered if a tuxedo rental could fit you with a boys' jacket and/or pants on short notice.

  • Lisa replied 10 years ago

Oh this sounds like a fun wedding.  I adore the tux idea, but the baggy trousers and a slim top half sounds divine too.  Have a fun time!

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Yes, Joy - that was my idea. Tux shirt, blue jacket, black slouchy pants. But what a cool notion to get fitted for a boys' rental. Honestly - I don't think I'll do that this time, but it's truly worth a thought for another occasion.

Thanks for the well wishes and suggestions, all.

Sveta, hang tight on the jeans -- they might work. If you ordered tall. Meanwhile I also ordered two of the basic t-necks but think maybe I should have sized up on those. I will report soon.

If I wear a turtleneck and pearls I will have to see about the belt -- would probably just wear my very simple black one. I don't really have great pearls so would be experimenting with whatever bling I have around here.

  • Sveta replied 10 years ago

No, regular - talls were not available :-( It said 33" for regular so may work for me with a tapered leg.

  • sarah replied 10 years ago

Suz, what about the trousers here (in 29)? Aren't they wide black trousers? I think you will look terrific...

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

Sveta, I might leave off the belt because of the bling. Probably tucked. I always feel better when I'm tucked wearing those trousers. Hmmmm. Although maybe I'll be a devil and untuck.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Sarah, those are actually charcoal and not as dressy as my black ones because of the fabrication and to some extent the colour. They are sort of a stretch flannel, very nice, but the black baggy ones are a really, really refined wool with a touch of sheen and they feel like magic and drape so beautifully it makes me cry with joy every time I put them on. They are in Photo 11 in that thread.

And thank you for having such a great memory!

  • sarah replied 10 years ago

Ah, I see. I only remember because I always think your outfits with those look so terrific. What brand are your magic pants? I love the idea of Angie's black fluid wide leg trousers, but my feet have become increasingly intolerant of any sort of heel, so I've decided to forgo them. But perhaps tapered fluid trousers would be a good alternative.

  • cheryle (Dianthus) replied 10 years ago

I love the idea of the tux look.  I think I suggested it on the other thread after seeing a tux look at our xmas party.  I was thinking of the lanai jacket though.  I thought you bought one around the time Shannon got hers.

  • Ariadne replied 10 years ago

The bride's dress sounds super cool, in both meanings of the word!

Your ideas sound perfect, but this thread is useless without pics.

  • Liz A. replied 10 years ago

Sveta, what size do you need?  I see the talls available in a 14 on the US site.

  • Deborah replied 10 years ago

Suz, what you are suggesting sounds fab. It would be a little unexpected and very cool.

  • Beth Ann replied 10 years ago

    1.  I want some magic pants
    2.  I think both options sound amazing, as does the bride's dress
    3.  I think I must try Angie's dress up outfit!

    Here's to a magical weekend!

  • ManidipaM replied 10 years ago

This is going to be the chicest wedding party I have heard of. Heavens, what coolth! Though I still don't understand the bare feet... (and I come from a place where brides are traditionally barefoot).

And I can't wait to see you as tux'ed (S)MOTG.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

The magic pants are by a designer called "noir" whose clothes I have not seen elsewhere -- I got them from the Runway at Winner's, Vancouver. They are European sized...I think I discovered they were a Danish company. Superb pants, very fashion forward at the time, slouchy, baggy, and exceptionally fluid. So glad I splurged on those.

Dianthus, I sent the Lanai back due to fit issues. And it is navy with stripes -- not that it would be a problem to wear it with black pants, but it wouldn't be the full tux look.

Ariadne, I hope I will have photos to come!

  • Diana replied 10 years ago

Oh, I love the sound of a wedding party made up of Urban Princes!

Do you remember Rita's tux outfit?
