August challenge: The Fails

Some of my Angie ensembles were fails. Alas. But I figure it's good to post the less successful outfits, too. So here goes.

I absolutely loved the idea of the slogan tee with print bottoms and jacket. But the reality of the outfit wasn't so great. I would have liked it better with pants than shorts -- but apart from jeans, which felt too hot, I have no print pants right now. It was also too hot for the jacket but it didn't feel like an "outfit" without it. So I took the whole thing off before I went out, LOL.

I did like the tee -- an Out of Print "library stamp" tee that I swiped from my DD.

I don't know why I decided to try the olive ensembles when I have so little olive in my closet -- all I have is one pair of BF shorts. I did not enjoy them with the cobalt silk top (purchased for me at the London Ontario Costco 3 years ago by the lovely Sveta). Maybe because the cobalt is more "royal" than cobalt or maybe silk and army green just felt like too much of a juxtaposition to me.

Then there was olive and espadrilles. Not only do I only have one item in olive, but I don't own espadrilles. So I wore a straw stretch belt as a sub. Did not like this -- way too casual/ boyish for me.

Finally, we have denim shorts, interesting top, and a hat. This felt downright ridiculous, so again, I didn't go out in it. The hat is not exactly current but it is sentimental. It belonged to my late sister in law -- one of her baldness-covering hats. She was bald due to the chemo.

Ironically, the version that worked better was an impromptu one in a truck stop during my trip. My brother and I both found hats.  :)  But we didn't bring them home with us. Too bad.

Sometimes, there is much wisdom n learning what does NOT work as well at what does.

Thanks for showing us both sides!

Hey, I have that exact same Out of Print t-shirt! (I usually have to explain what it is to people, which makes me feel a million years old.) I actually like the light-colored fedora on you, you should look for a similar size/shape if you ever need a hat.

  • Sal replied 8 years ago

Thanks for sharing!  I do not mind outfit 1 or 2, but can see that they are not as successful as your previous lot which were all stunning.  I think 1 without the jacket would have been a fun smart casual look.

But it is all part of the process...as you say you can just take it off!

I am experimenting today with a merino blue tunic and black ponte leggings, wearing with a black light weight bomber jacket over the top.  The bomber is really gear and gets worn in summer to athletics or to and from the gym or for walking.  I am not sure that it totally works but it is a change anyway:)

Gosh it is fun to see the flops from someone as stylish as you! I thought only people like me had flops :) It is a great exercise--thanks for sharing. (Seeing 3 makes me realize that my khaki soft pants aren't saturated enough to pull off the vibrant cobalt either--the intensities are too far apart, I think.)

    PS...

I love the pic of you and your brother, the hats are so cute and there is a very strong family resemblance,  You both look fab!

  • replied 8 years ago

I like the khaki shorts and blue top together!  I tried this combo myself this summer, albeit with more of a true olive pant, and really liked it. Enough to wear it a few times, which is one or two more than most things I wore !  (I swear the summer we had with it's incredible heat was just as bad for dressing as constant -30C where dressing is equally boring. I lived in tshirts, skorts and tanks. I don't think I dressed up more than a handful of times and only when I had to for work-= seriously).
I cannot get over how much you and your brother look alike. And yes, that kind of fedora suits you - it could be a great way to change up a winter look with a nifty new felt version.

  • MTBGirl replied 8 years ago

I don't think they were complete fails. I really like #1, and #3 if the shorts were a darker olive. Really love the pic of you and your brother! Awesome! He's a looker just like you!

  • Jenn replied 8 years ago

I can see why these weren't up to snuff, given the home runs you hit with your other ensembles. I do think some of these were at least base hits, though, even if they weren't grand slams. (Look at me stretch the sports metaphor! I've been to, like, two baseball games in whole life.)

I have that same Out of Print tee, but mine is V-neck. I love the print, but still struggle with it, The shape and color both do me no favors.

  • JAileen replied 8 years ago

I don't think these are as bad as you think. I like both iterations of olive, and also the library card top.

ETA: you and your brother look so similar!

  • Joy replied 8 years ago

Thank you for posting the fails. They aren't bad, just not up to your usual polish. The fedora is a great hat shape for you.

  • Cerinda replied 8 years ago

Thanks for being so candid with us!  It's ever so reassuring to learn that an ace like you has experiments that end in tear-it-off-and-toss-on-the-uniform, too.  Please show us that great tee again?

  • Angie replied 8 years ago

#1 works really well to my eye - but you have to feel it too, Suz.

    I like #3 too, actually!

And #7 makes me smile. You are soooooooooo adorable.

You and your brother look FABULOUS in those hats. You need a fedora for next Summer, Suz.

  • Jaime replied 8 years ago

You and your brother are too good in those hats - you have a strong resemblance. I also like your failures - #1 looks good to me and I love #3 but all the better that you know what you want and should stick with it.

  • carter replied 8 years ago

This was actually very enlightening for me. I'm so relieved it's not just me who can't always make the leap from "looks great on paper" to pulling it off IRL. I've let it frustrate me at times. Now, we'll just say...."Next!"

  • Brooklyn replied 8 years ago

These are only "fails" because you set the bar so high. I think the cobalt top and olive shorts look great actually! Super cute pic with your brother.

  • replied 8 years ago

Thank you for sharing the 'fails' Suz! I think it's great that you experimented with these looks--all part of learning about ourselves. This is a lesson for me to step outside my comfort zone and try some different looks.

  • Dee replied 8 years ago

Suz, thanks for posting this. It's great that you can identify not only that they didn't work for you but also why, and what you might do differently. And somewhat of a relief that even you feel that you have off days sometimes, since you have such a great sense of style and I still hope to get there someday!

  • unfrumped replied 8 years ago

Some of these I'd consider successes. Were they supposed to be elegant chic sitting by the pool lady, or normal great casual?

  • CocoLion replied 8 years ago

You need the hat from #9 to go with #7!  Then the ensemble will work.  For the hat in #7, you need your navy shift dress, or a black LBD.  Both with your cognac sandals.  Then the hat will bring an on-trend 70s glam aspect to the outfit.  The print makes a statement so a very simple outfit is in order.

#1 just needs a more casual black jacket or blouse worn as jacket.  That's all.  The one shown is a little serious for this outfit, that's all.  The checked pants (they remind me of chef's pants!) are so cute on you with the graphic tee.

#3 is super simple, perhaps a pair of dressier casual shoes will make it worth.  Nothing wrong with the silk blouse or shorts, please don't give them up.

#5 is super to me, great for a day that calls for casual sporty with the option to cover.  Not sure what you don't like about it.

Now off to see everyone else's comments...

  • Ankita replied 8 years ago

<trying real hard NOT to read any of the comments above....need to give an unbiased opinion>

I LOVE LOVE LOVE #5, there's nothing there that doesn't work Suz, you look super casual, sexy and stunning!

#7 with the hat in #9 - DIVINE!

    #9, what a cuteeeeee picture!

  • Maneera replied 8 years ago

Woohoo. First off, you're amazing for posting what you consider your 'fails'. You have to be really confident about your sense of style to be able to comfortably show off what doesn't work out with just as much as what looks fab. I applaude your confidence, Suz! You're one ah-maaaa-zing fashionista, I say!

Onto your outfits ---- I like #1 but it does look like an outfit better suited for fall.

#2 is also very casual and simple....but yes, it isnt up to mark for you otherwise amazingly high standard of style.

#5 is meh---not bad, per say....but nothing special.

Now #7 is downright stunning if you remove the hat. I love that outfit otherwise.

And #9 is one of my most favourite pictures of you ever! You and your brother are so very cute!!!

  • lyn67 replied 8 years ago

I always love to see your posts, Suz! I haven't read the text first, only the title which read  "The FALL" to me:-), so hurried to the picties... and it didn't occure me they are wrong(are they?) till reaching to the hat. It's such a glamorous piece but IMHO didn't go  with the outfit. Then only, read the text. Oh, I see now why the black jacket striked a little too much in the first outfit, too...Looking twice, and so-that particular  cobalt seems indeed  a bit  too  loud with that particular olive-or maybe both are just plain, and proportions you got 50%-50%...Hmm...sometimes we have to trust our guts...not only in regards to what to wear, but also what not!
Otherwise, I really loved nr 5, and nr 9 is so  candidly sweet:-).

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

Lyn, you hit it exactly -- we have to trust our gut. And even if some of these outfits looked okay, they didn't feel okay to me. That's what counts and that's why they are "fails" in my books.

But thank you all for the compliments and suggestions. Denise, you're a genius about the hats -- the busy one is sentimental and I can't bear to throw it away yet I never wear it. I should have worn it with the blue sheath and cognac sandals.

  • donnat replied 8 years ago

I love this post. It is nice to see that the fails happens to others as well. I do like the khaki and cobalt, but I understand your feelings about the juxtaposition. I would feel the same. Cute fedoras.

  • Elizabeth P replied 8 years ago

Thanks Suz for posting the "other side" of the dressing equation.

    1.  I think the trouble here is the jacket... it's not casual enough. The jacket also looks a bit small for the overall outfit, whatever that means.  Almost delicate. Throw on your denim jacket and you'd have a winner.

    3.  I have a bit of a poison eye for this colour combo, as I see it as colours from two totally different colour groups, that jar in my eyes rather than harmonize.  So not sure I'd love this regardless :).  I do think if you are going to try to mix these groups, the intensities need to be closer.  So a darker olive.  Or... a lighter top, which you did in...

...5.  I think this is fine!  Maybe not a wow, but a nice casual outfit.  Love the interpretation of espadrille in your belt, very clever.

    7.  The hat is just completely wrong here.  For me, it's the pattern adding way too much busyness combined with the jacket.  Put on that cute fedora in 9 with this outfit, and you'd have a winner.  BR had a very similar one last time I was in... not sure if it's still around or not.  If you feel the need for a fedora, that is :)

Once again, thanks for sharing the "fails"!

  • Sara L. replied 8 years ago

Thanks for posting. It's always educational to see what people perceive as fails.  I was thinking almost the same things as Denise so I won't be redundant.  The picture of you and your brother is so CUTE!

  • milehighstyle (Linda) replied 8 years ago

You and your brother are adorable.  I think you need a fedora too.

I like the blue blouse with the olive shorts, but I know the feeling when an outfit just doesn't wow you.

Your sister in law's hat made me smile (in a sad way, if you know what I mean).

This is a fun idea, posting fails.

  • LucyRose replied 8 years ago

This is so great. I love how you took a different approach to the WIW thing with a history of some fails. It feels so genuine and even helpful to look back on what didn't work!

Also the photo with your bother is fabulous. You guys look alike.

  • replied 8 years ago

I love #3 on you, hands down the winner for me.  Olive and cobalt are happy companions--maybe the top is more royal blue, hard to see on the computer the true color.  I wouldn't give up on that color combination.

That being said, you would make any outfit look good!
