Big earrings: A (mostly) summer fling

Apologies for the poor quality of the photos; I was at a conference late last week and this past weekend and snapped a few pics that happen to relate to today's blog post.

My most worn earrings are a small pair of silver studs. But I do enjoy big earrings if they are lightweight and I find I wear them especially in summer. I think it is because necklines are free of scarves, popped collars, and all the other tricks I use to keep warm and flatter my long-ish neck and small bust. It's also because a big earring can act as a "third piece" in a simple summer outfit where layers are out of the question.

In #1 I'm wearing the Nickel and Suede earrings in white and I feel like they make the outfit.

In #2 you can't see my small silver studs. I am wearing a necklace here as well (hidden by camera) and I always wear small studs if I am wearing a necklace. This is such a FFBO -- have been wearing it to similar events exactly as here for several years and always feel fab.

#3 I'm back to the Nickel and Suede. This was a bit awkward as long as I had the jacket on, but for much of the day I was outside in the heat and the jacket was off, so on balance the earring seemed to help complete the outfit.

Looking great in all of these, Suz!  The big earrings do indeed make those outfits and accentuate your lovely long neck.

  • Joy replied 7 years ago

Yes, the big earrings make the outfit and look fabulous on you.

  • Cococat replied 7 years ago

I'm with Tanya, the statement earrings look fabulous on you Suz.

  • Ledonna N. replied 7 years ago

Suz you always look fab. The earrings are a huge element to the fit at the same time do not detract from your beauty.

  • Jaime replied 7 years ago

I especially like them in the first picture and I love the second outfit too. I think I would love them with the dress without jacket in the third - with the jacket they compete a bit somehow. You still look great though!

  • Astrid replied 7 years ago

Somehow statement earrings don't seem to work well on me, even though I have short hair. I think it's because of the specs, it's just too busy for my taste. But they sure do look great on you! Love them in the first outfit especially.

  • Angie replied 7 years ago

I love you in those big earrings, Suz. You're dead right about them acting like a third piece. They look sooooooo good with the new 'do. I vote Killer x3.

Good grief, the colour of your hair is delicious. Looks like you're defining your brows more too. LOVE.

  • Sara L. replied 7 years ago

I love the big earrings in #1.  I feel the same way about jewelry in the summer - it's acts as that third piece and makes an outfit feel finished.  I wear a lot of bracelets in the summer.  You have really great shoes too which are also an outfit completer (for me anyway) during the summer.

  • JAileen replied 7 years ago

Okay, I just got through on Angie's post writing how I don't like big earrings. But that's in certain circumstances - long hair, heavy earrings, and busy busy outfits. None of that applies here. Your big earrings work in these outfits, and I like them.

  • Murph11 replied 7 years ago

    Love, love, love these looks!

  • Beth Ann replied 7 years ago

Your fringe is already looking longer --- love the way your hair is changing your style!  The earrings are a wonderful bit of Summer fun and they do add a lot of focus to your face, too!

Glad your skirts and dresses are getting some love!

  • replied 7 years ago

Those earrings are so cool with your "new" hair!  Great looks.  Keep cool and carry on!

  • replied 7 years ago

Wow! Love all three outfits - you can rock a denim jacket really well.  Also love the thong sandals - what are they?

I don't feel comfortable with my super short hair and big earrings right now, and I wonder if neck length is the factor . Until you mentioned it, I've never thought about it. I can't honestly say I've ever considered the length of my neck - short, long or otherwise, but I wonder if that's why I don't like the look on me.

Looking really good , Suz :)

  • Beth replied 7 years ago

Ooooh, you look so amazing in all three of these outfits. You definitely can rock the statement earrings. Also, the length of that denim jacket is perfection.

  • Suz replied 7 years ago

Lisa, thanks -- I think one reason that I can wear a big earring with short hair is not just neck length (mine's probably only on the slightly long side of normal) but also face length -- my face is longer than the supposed 2.5 cm that is supposed to work for pixies....anyway, the big earring adds a bit of width. It also (arguably) emphasizes the length -- but  I'm not really hung up on that. My attitude is kind of... I have a big head, people, so what? As long as the earrings don't overpower my features.

It's probably about the proportions of your cut more than anything, though. I find that if I'm unhappy with the proportions of a short cut, I can't feel fab, PERIOD. And the tiniest tweaks make a difference. Ugh. I hate that phase where you are waiting for it to grow enough for them to get the proportion right.

Xtabay, Murph11, JAileen, Ledonna, Joy, Tanya, Beth, thank you!

Beth Ann, summer is all about the skirt and dress for me. At home I wear shorts a lot but the minute I head out I put on a skirt. I so welcome the option to do that, maybe especially with the super short 'do.

Sara, thanks -- YLF has really taught me to put energy into footwear choices.

Astrid, I'm with you -- when I wear my specs I wear small studs. I don't like the competition. But I agree with those who feel it's okay with sunnies.

Shevia, my point exactly. The collar of the jacket interferes with the earring. But I had some AC exposure so had to be prepared!

Angie, thanks for the sweet words. The hair is getting a bit thick already but I am not quite ready for a trim since I want to encourage a bit more length and consider possible styles for the future. I am likely to leave it super short for a few months (as I get the dye out), but with a bit more fringe for added femininity.  But I am open to suggestions for the future. I do like the drama of this, and the fact that it is not the cut du jour is a bit of a bonus. I was tired of seeing myself coming and going. That did not feel true to me.

I have not defined the eyebrows more but I think the higher contrast both within my hair and between the lighter parts of hair and brow makes it appear that way. I do plan to get them "done" as per Lisa's recommendations but am waiting for a month or two.

  • Suz replied 7 years ago

ETA, Lisa, the sandals, believe it or not, are Fit Flops!!

Why am I wearing Fit Flops? Well, Lorna Crozier told me to get a pair.

Seriously -- my plantar fasciitis was acting up a bit and I was getting the shockwave therapy for it and Lorna happened to tell me that she got hers after a bout of PF (she's a big walker) and has never looked back. I am wearing them mostly as house slippers for the summer but I was doing a fair bit of walking at the Writers' Summit and it was super hot and I wasn't sure if I might be poolside on that trip as well, so I popped them in my bag just in case and ended up wearing them one day.

  • Nishaa replied 7 years ago

You have nailed it.. Short hair with long earrings is a very difficult thing to do. Guess I'm being inspired to shorten my hair..

  • skylurker replied 7 years ago

    I love #1 !
the black&white&silver palette works really well with your new hair colour, and I love the proportions of the outfit, too.
(I also love checks in general, and dislike denim jackets in general, so that clearly influence my point of view).

  • Maneera replied 7 years ago

Love #1! When I read Angie's post today, I instantly thought of you!! I have noticed the earrings in another post you did sometime back...I think long earrings realllly flatter your shorter hair and long neck.

    Love your FFBO, btw.

  • replied 7 years ago

Lorna the poet :)  I have a pair of Fit Flops ( my bff is a rep for the line) and love them. Mine are black suede with a frilly flowerish thing on them (they were free - don't ask) so they don't get worn a lot anymore . But holy cow are they great!  And I get compliments on them every time I wear them even though the frilly bit kinda bugs me  I'd love a white pair like yours.

  • replied 7 years ago

And head size is an interesting factor - another thing to consider indeed .  I have a small face and smallish head and small features.

  • merwoman replied 7 years ago

Love these on you Suz!  Colour and shape of earring suit you beautifully!
Interesting thoughts re proportions. I have very small narrow face, long neck and short hair...and big earrings seem to work! At least to my eye. :-)
I've picked up these (finds below) from BR and absolutely love the gold dangly pair. I can see the silver/white pearl working for you with your gorgeous colouring.

  • Suz replied 7 years ago

Lisa, see if your friend can get you some more freebies! They have some pretty nice styles this year. Not all toe thongs either -- but for me, I knew this would stay on my foot better and it had adjustability -- some of the styles are a bit too wide for me or something.

I can imagine the little flowery thing...yeah. That would turn me off them, too, but then again, I'll bet you could style them a bit ironically and they'd be brilliant!

Skylurker, chuckling because outfit 1 actually included a denim jacket (white) for part of the evening as well! Luckily I didn't photograph it and saved your poor eyes...

    Maneera, thank you!

  • Suz replied 7 years ago

Merwoman, I actually have the studs you showed there -- I really like them!

And yes, I agree that you wear long earrings well. I think it definitely helps to have a longer neck or at least not a short one, and short hair showcases them for sure.

  • merwoman replied 7 years ago

you're fast! Adding a cropped pic. I am not a maximal person in the least, but somehow I am ok with earrings a d specs!

  • Suz replied 7 years ago

They look great on you, Sue! It's not maximal at all on you because it works with your face shape.

  • Style Fan replied 7 years ago

Suz I like these looks.  Love big earrings on you.  I have Fit Flops.  Mine are ancient.  Bronze sparkly.  I must get another pair.  I love them.

  • celia replied 7 years ago

You totally rock those big earrings . I think they even look nicer now with the new haircut.
Your outfits are perfect as always.

  • Caro in Oz replied 7 years ago

Great outfits Suz you look so vibrant - from the inside out :) Love the gingham shirt on you & the earrings add drama (which I love).

  • rachylou replied 7 years ago

The earrings are a huge YES.

You know, I'm still loving dainty necklaces, but big earrings somehow are providing needed balance right now for me. Is it something about this year's summer fashion?

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 7 years ago

You are looking so great, Suz. These outfits are phenomenal on you. I love the new direction you are going.
I had to get those Nickel & Suede earrings, too, influenced by you and someone else I saw them on here recently. I got the matte silver ones and have worn them a couple of times. I'm not quite sure they are my style, but I've been wanting larger earrings lately.

  • Chris987 replied 7 years ago

Lovely outfits from head to toe. Love the earrings! I totally relate to your comments about wearing certain earrings mostly in summer....I have earrings, not so large,  that I don't wear much in winter because they catch on whatever scarf I'm wearing and then taking off the scarf indoors becomes quite entertaining. :-)  I suppose this would not be a problem for someone in a year round warm location.

Also ..."fit flops"? these are new to me....always love a new idea.

One more thing Suz, that checked top looks so much more stylish and feminine/classy on you than it does in the find pic - funny how that happens sometimes.

  • jenanded replied 7 years ago

I think these big earrings really work with your bair and because of 'the summer thing'.... the outfits are just great... I need to get tips from you on 'put together casual' as you do it sooo well.

  • replied 7 years ago

You are looking soooo good Suz! Three awesome outfits. I think I'm going to call #1 as my favourite because I just love that gingham shirt on you.

  • lyn67 replied 7 years ago

Wowwww, the big earings REALLY REALLY MAKE the outfit nr 1!!!! I can see IT!
Love them in nr 3, too. And  you can never go wrong with some fab studs(like for nr 2), isn't it!
    YLFSUZ!

  • Deborah replied 7 years ago

Love the drama of the earrings.  Suz since cutting my own hair shorter I have been having a ball with earrings.  A short do almost cries out for them :)
