Boden Order: 3 keeps, 2 maybes.

My Boden order arrived much more expeditiously than the M&S one. I will also have to pay for returns for this order, but took a chance anyway because I really love the quality of their knits and several that I was interested in went on substantial sale.

My 3 keeps:

Pics 1-3 Striped oversized merino sweater. I had to order the smallest size here and it is still very oversized, but not in the shoulder area or sleeves, which is key. It is a thick, substantial knit but because it is merino, it drapes. I can semi-tuck it, which makes the proportion better with the baggier jeans. This is a kind of no-brainer item for me -- I will likely wear it for years in different ways and even once the oversized trend is over, I will enjoy it at home. The quality is superb.

Pic 4: Cropped sweatshirt: Such a soft cotton and a fun paisley pattern in colours that brighten my winter days. Is this an illustration of Kibbe's theory that "no amount of detail" is too much for a gamine type? Maybe, though he'd recommend geometric patterns over organic swirls. But I like paisley, so there!

I'm also keeping a plain white tee with a nice neckline. This is for layering. I did not have one, and this one is substantial and a nice cut.

My maybes: Pics 5-7 -- a knit dress for summer. This was on substantial discount, so the price was very reasonable. On (wise) reviewers' advice, I sized down. But I'm not sure. This is a type of dress I desperately want/ need. Easy wash/ wear, throw on and go. You may recall my forays this past summer with one from Barbour that unfortunately had a logo splashed above the boob. Anyway...this one needs a racerback bra style (fine with me). It's too long, but could be shortened (I have shown it in the last pic roughly paperclipped up in front.) However, I feel the gathering at the waistline area is just a bit too much. I am getting a mutton dressed as lamb vibe. So I'm unsure.

Crepe pleated skirt, Pics 8-15.  Pros: I love the pattern on this. I don't own such a skirt. It is basically all season in my climate, with tights beneath and boots in winter and bare legged in warmer weather.

Cons: the colours are mostly warm. The background is navy (not black) and there is a lot of white in it. But the pinks are warmer than described in some of the reviews (one reviewer claimed there was lilac in the pattern -- I would call it salmon pink). And the red is really a rust..

So the question is, do I have anything to wear it with besides navy or white? I am trying it here with various options -- a fire engine red jacket, darker red sweater, red sweater, the lilac M&S sweater I'm returning, a pink cashmere sweater, and a magenta sweater. It is surprisingly chameleon, at least in the photos, but I'm just not sure. Quality is lovely. It is a bit loose on me -- I ordered up because people complained about the snug waist and I can't stand that. I think I'd have been fine in my usual size but this gives an added measure of insurance in case of layering and it doesn't twist around.

Another potential "con" is simply the question of whether I'd wear it at all. Sometimes I still buy for my imaginary lifestyle. Am I imagining occasions to wear this? I don't know.

I hope these reviews may help someone else and I would appreciate any thoughts on the "maybe" items. Thank you!

This is so interesting ! I’ll be honest in saying the piece I love the best is the skirt . It’s very different for you - and yet it seems to fit right in . I don’t love the dress - a little too , uh , what word do I want ? Conservative maybe . The sweatshirt reminds me of a piece you owned several years ago ….was it a two- pice sweatsuit ?

  • Angie replied 1 year ago

Suz, KILLER x5. Keep ALL the Boden items. Send all the M&S items back.

Leave the dress this length. Elegant! WINNER with the white denim jacket.

I agree with LJP about the skirt. Very different for you - yet fits into your style and wardrobe seamlessly. Clever refresh :) .....try it with your taupe boots too. Or white top and new white boots. Try it with a navy striped tee or pullover. Pattern mix with one of your scarves.

  • Runcarla replied 1 year ago

Agree with LJP, the skirt is the best of the bunch - though all are good.  Agree with Angie’s strategy - return the M&S and keep the Boden..

My two cents: thumbs way, way, up on the skirt. It looks amazing with everything you've paired it with. I also really like the striped sweater, particularly because the stripes carry over to the sleeve, such an interesting detail.

  • Dee replied 1 year ago

Yep that striped sweater is so totally you, and cute paisley top too but I'm hesitant about the striped dress for the exact reasons you've stated but maybe its just the length thats throwing it off a bit too.

I really love that pleated skirt, it looks so fab the many ways that you've already styled it. I think its swooshy and has great potential, I want one too!!

  • Suz replied 1 year ago

The M&S is all packed up and ready to go!

The skirt is such a gorgeous pattern, honestly. They had a bunch of stuff in this pattern -- tops, another skirt, a dress -- even a bathing suit! It's just fab.

Do you think it works with any of the tops I tried? I will definitely try with different boots/ other footwear. I do have things to wear it with across seasons. I just wonder if I will need to buy more tops. I love the skirt with the mustard sweater they show in the stock pic but mustard is never going anywhere near my face. I can wear it with a mustard bag, though.

Lisa P, yes, great memory!! I still have that J. Crew sweatsuit! The pants are pretty much worn out and the top is also on its last legs. It served me really well but will go in the donate bag this spring. I think if I get some navy sweatpants, I can wear with this top at home, but I'll also wear the top out of the house at least in its first year.

I love the big stripy jumper on you!The skirt too .It seems to go with a lot of things that you already have and as you say surprisingly versatile.I have seen you wearing skirts so am interested in why you think it might be fantasy lifestyle…is it the fabric care that makes it so?
l think that the dress is too big for you.It looks oversized but not in a flattering way.l can see what you are looking for from this but the cut isn’t as good as it could be.

  • kkards replied 1 year ago

Another vote for the skirt. I love it as shown in 8, 9, 11 &13. And would love it with the denim jacket your wearing with the dress. And with any white or cream sweater. & after looking at it on bodens site, make a caramel or light brown color (can’t remember if you own anything in those colors) I might even suggest getting a matching top.
I like the dress, but at the current length which to me makes it more current. And yes to the cropped sweatshirt

  • Jenn replied 1 year ago

I’m a yea on the skirt and a no on the dress.

Being perfectly honest, I keep buying jersey dresses thinking they’re just what I need—easy for summer, able to be thrown in the wash, lightweight, casual versatile, yadda yadda yadda. I don’t think I’ve ever ended up perfectly happy with one. I wear them because I bought them, but they lose their shape, seem juvenile, and I always feel a little sloppy in them.

  • jussie replied 1 year ago

I LOVE that pleated skirt on you, fwiw. The dress I don’t love as much, it’s alright but I feel it lacks the wow factor. The sweaters are both great. That stripe will be such a classic. I almost ordered the paisley crop sweater myself a few weeks ago, it’s cute. Yay for a shopping success :) . Look forward to seeing your outfits with these new pieces.

  • Irina replied 1 year ago

Love the striped sweater and the skirt. The dress if fine, too but you should keep the length, I agree with others. I think this dress needs a sporty element to stay current like sneakers or your  Ecco sandals.

  • Janet replied 1 year ago

LOVE the skirt on you. I am deathly afraid of pleats for myself, but oh my that looks fantastic on you. Please keep. The tops seem very workable too.

I’m not a fan of the dress. I think it’s the gathered waistline. That detail strikes me as less sophisticated than your usual impeccable style. I sympathize because I have a hard time with summer dresses too. I relate to what Jenn says about them.

  • Suz replied 1 year ago

Thank you all so much. I think the dress is going back. (If it's not final sale...ooops -- better check that!) I think it is the gathering as well. I could not keep it at that length because I trip on it -- too dangerous. It isn't the length per se, but the cut...Jenn, Janet, you are so right about jersey dresses. Sigh. This one is superb quality, as Boden jersey and knitwear typically is -- better than the usual -- so I had high hopes. But alas, the style is not going to work for me.

I'm pretty much decided on keeping the skirt. And the other stuff, but tags are not yet off.

Cardiff Girl, I worried the skirt might be "fantasy" in part because of my bicycling lifestyle. I can see myself wanting to wear it and then worrying that it might get caught or something while I am riding because it is so long. I do have a step-through bike, so it's not the worst, but still....I do see it as versatile -- can be dressed up or down -- so it's not that, so much. And the fabric is easy/ peasy -- non wrinkling, lightweight, will travel well.

Jussie, you'd look fab in that paisley sweatshirt and it would go with your blue boots!

I appreciate all the honest feedback.

I find the skirt to be perfect. The dress has got too much extra floof.

  • slim cat replied 1 year ago

The skirt is the star but I happened to like the dress and sweatshirt too ( striped sweater is totally you of course ;) ). I wonder if there is a light grey tee with some black/white graphic somewhere that would work well with that fab skirt for some casual pairing ( graphic tees are my answer to most of my midi skirts' styling - lol ).

  • Cee replied 1 year ago

    The Boden bode well :D

  • Zaeobi replied 1 year ago

I think the issue with the jersey dress may also be the height of the waist - it's not quite drop waist on you, but it's not at your natural waist either. So then the gathering looks not quite right.
Agree with Irina about the lack of sportiness - maybe if the racerback was also a racerfront (halter neck).

The striped longer jumper is a no brainer on you - I like how the stripes don't start until further down the chest, so there isn't so much boldness right around your face (no idea what you call that sort of placement). I'm sure you could pull that off too though, just like the paisley pattern shows :)

I was sooo tempted by the pattern on that skirt but ultimately decided against it because of the pink & white background (was on the fence about the navy)... it's a much better match for you! I like it with everything you've shown except for the red jacket (#10) - somehow the hip length feels a *smidge* too long? #9 is fine though. It's not the colour either, because the #11 long burgundy cardi & the #12 red jumper both look fab with it.
I've found my pleated skirt to be a lot more versatile than I originally thought it would be (not as bulkifying as feared) - though I don't know how easy it would be to clip for bike riding (how slippery is the crepe material?)

An overall good haul here! Be prepared for your return to take time though, even once it's at the Boden office. Mine got there last week but no acknowledgement from them yet - understandably so, I'm not expecting anyone to get back to me on it until at least the week after next. But I do plan to chase it up then (since it's a lot of items, sent out of pocket, that I don't want to go missing!)

  • Sloper replied 1 year ago

Your styling variations for the skirt look very nice to me. Can I come live in your imaginary lifestyle? :-)

And the striped sweater is so great!

  • Lana replied 1 year ago

I love all except the dress. I know you want honest answers so even though you could make it work, there’s something about it that doesn’t seem like your style, maybe not sleek enough.

  • Jessikams replied 1 year ago

The dress is definitely too juvenile— I often think Boden items just look “young” but also conservative. Like jcrew used to be in the 90s!

That said, the other items are fab! Especially the skirt, oh my god, keep the skirt, you can wear it with absolutely anything.

  • Bijou replied 1 year ago

I like everything except the dress. The skirt is gorgeous on you and looks great styled in all of these pictures - I like it especially with your navy, red and burgundy toppers. For summer, you could take inspiration from Brooklyn's style as she wears dressy skirts in summer with woven tops. I don't think the skirt is veering into fantasy life as long as you resolve to just wear the skirt even on the most casual work from home days.

  • Style Fan replied 1 year ago

Love the skirt! I can see it being very versatile. Both sweaters are winners. I would pass on the dress.

  • Sisi replied 1 year ago

Well, i like you a lot in that dress! But of course, all depends upon how you feel in it. Love the skirt!

  • Star replied 1 year ago

The skirt looks fabulous with all the colours you have paired it with, it really is a chameleon and I don't think you will have to buy additional tops.  I really like the dress too, but maybe Zaeobi is right about the waist not being in the right place for you.  In theory I would love the dress but in reality the gathers would drive me nuts, but I am way more floofy in the middle than you.  Sweaters are exactly you and I love them.  Great finds.

  • delurked replied 1 year ago

So I decided to look at the pictures before reading your words. My first thought was that of all the items, the skirt was the winner of the bunch. Sorry to pile on with love for the skirt if you're not going to keep it, but It's terribly flattering on you. I do get that it's more warm than what you've got already in your wardrobe.

  • Debbie replied 1 year ago

I am in the minority here. I love the skirt and think it could be a a workhorse for you. The dress to me is a no brainer. It washes well. And looks great with the jacket. It is flattering on you and hot weather wear is hard to fine. I would keep!

  • replied 1 year ago

Love the skirt, and the striped jumper is good too!

  • Jaime replied 1 year ago

Well in case you needed more of the same - love the skirt, the striped sweater is a winner and am neutral on the other two pieces - in other words I would have to ask more questions about when and how you would wear them.

  • Olive Green replied 1 year ago

The striped dress is so charming, not mutton as lamb at all!

  • sarah replied 1 year ago

I haven't read thru the comments, but oh my gosh, I love, love, love that skirt on you! Please keep it! I also love the navy striped oversized sweater. The dress is cute! I personally wouldn't be comfortable in the cropped sweatshirt, because I get self-conscious about my middle, but it looks cute on you.

  • rachylou replied 1 year ago

I’m with Angie. I think the striped dress is perfect also.

  • Sally replied 1 year ago

I'm not much help.  It all looks great to me.  I especially like the striped sweater and the skirt so think you should keep them.  I think the dress looks great especially with the white jacket and the cropped sweater also looks good but I but I guess it comes down to whether you will get use out of it or not.

  • lyn67 replied 1 year ago

Excuse me,  commented on the wrong post:-)

  • Karie replied 1 year ago

The skirt is amazing, definitely a keep. The striped dress I’m not in love with, but it definitely doesn’t have a “mutton as lamb” vibe. The striped navy and white sweater is very you, and the paisley top is pretty too.
