Cool toned leopard topper?

It's October, and I'm in fall shopping mode! :)

I'll report next week on some purchases. In the meantime, here's something I tried but didn't buy. What do we think of this faux fur cool toned leopard topper by Jones New York? Too over-the-top (ha ha) or just right?

The price is reasonable, especially if I buy this weekend on sale. An item like this is not on my shopping list. But I couldn't resist trying it on.

ETA, it may be *slightly* large but does not come in a smaller size. It's a duster shape and meant to be loose but the shoulder fit is just off my own shoulder. Sleeves surprisingly okay however.

Suz I have something that looks almost like that in my closet thrifted at the end of last year. We could be twins! Just sayin' ! If I can I will add a picture later.

  • bridgie replied 5 years ago

Suz, Just right.  Perfect with your hair color.  Made for you!  I think you should get it even though it might not be on your shopping list..

  • Jenn replied 5 years ago

I love it on you, Suz. And it looks so good with the wide leg pants!

  • Elizabeth P replied 5 years ago

    I love it.
But I may be biased... I have this . I’ll admit I don’t wear it much, but it’s fun when I do. Only you know if the coat is a weight and warmth that will be worn. It certainly suits you!

I think it’s absolutely gorgeous with your coloring and I love the face framing effect of the collar. I’m not a good judge of perfect shoulder fit as my shoulders are broad and I tend to err on the side of slightly too loose.

  • Sal replied 5 years ago

I have a caramel faux fur and I do love it.  I think they are best oversized - they are fun confident coats.

I have worn mine about 10 times a year over two years - mostly in the evening to dinner, cinema etc..  If I was in a more fashionable city I would probably wear it even more!!

I think this suits you and is a fun wildcard.

Suz, the cool colors are right but it is more of a statement than we are used to seeing on you. Do you really love it? Then you can own it and be comfortable in this print.

  • Mainelady replied 5 years ago

It looks gorgeous with your hair. Will you regret it, if you don’t purchase it?

  • Bijou replied 5 years ago

Love it! It is FUN and looks stunning on you, such perfect colours for your wardrobe.

  • The Cat replied 5 years ago

Love it (the print, the colours, the lines, and the beautiful collar). Gorgeous on you.

  • lyn67 replied 5 years ago

Great color, and fit, please keep!!!! It is so rare a cool leo, isn't it!:-)

  • Jessikams replied 5 years ago

Fun! A little big may be ok for layering a sweater underneath.
From the Find pic I thought, too short- but on you, with your cropped pants, it looks great.

  • Inge replied 5 years ago

I absolutely adore this on you, Suz, and have a feeling it could be surprsingly versatile. Hope it came home with you!-)

  • gryffin replied 5 years ago

Absolutely stunning!! Huge thumbs up. I have a light snow leopard topper from AT that I wear as a long blazer. From fall to spring it’s one of my most worn jackets. So fun. Looks wonderful on you!!

  • kerry replied 5 years ago

    1. It’s adorbale on you!
    2. This is the season for animal print - might not be so easy to find this snow leopard another season.
    3. You are living in a climate where this would probably work much of the season - milk it.

  • Chris987 replied 5 years ago

Gorgeous!!! I say KEEP with a capital "K"! Just don't leave it on a chair where kitty will use it for a bed. :-)

  • Colette replied 5 years ago

LOVE! It’s fab and fun and looks great on you!

  • Christina F. replied 5 years ago

OMG, it’s fabulous on you. Please tell me it went home with you. I agree with Kerry’s third point.

  • Kathie replied 5 years ago

I love the colors on you, but agree with Joy that it’s different from your other looks, which seem more tailored. How does it move on you? Boxy, or more fluid/swingy?

  • Janet replied 5 years ago

Love it! I think the fit looks good for outerwear.

I spotted one that I really liked in the window at Elie Tahari in NYC, but I’m sure that’s not as budget-friendly of an option.

  • replied 5 years ago

Very striking with your hair and the black bottoms....does look a tad big though ?

  • Sara L. replied 5 years ago

I love it and think it would be a lot of fun to wear.  I want a short boxy leopard print one but haven't found one yet (I also haven't really looked since the temps have still been in the 80's until last weekend).

  • Staysfit replied 5 years ago

I really like it! Is it versatile in your new climate? I toyed around with getting a faux fur jacket and so far have passed because I feel like the window for wearing it is too short. I think it would be too light for winter. I put wool jackets and coats into that transition category as well (unless they also have thinsulate), and if you have those, which I believe you do, will this compete with them for wear? Didn’t you get a beautiful J Crew cocoon coat last year?

  • Cardiff girl replied 5 years ago

I love it,it goes with your colouring. How you managed to resist buying it is beyond me.

  • Angie replied 5 years ago

KILLER pattern. LOVE the coat for you. Perfect with your hair.

Do you need a size down, or is it supposed to be oversized? Hard to tell with plush coats sometimes.

  • Sisi replied 5 years ago

I agree with Joy, it is different from what we usually see on you. How is the happiness factor?

  • Suz replied 5 years ago

Thank you all for thoughts and advice! Angie, I think it is both a tad large (can see in the shoulder fit) AND meant to be oversized. The cut is swingy through the torso, purposely so. A very slight A-line vs. a cocoon shape, you know? I think that makes it a bit easier to wear it on the large side as if it is intentional.

I was wearing a very thin merino ribbed sweater when trying on. Maybe I will go try it again with a thicker sweater underneath and/or even a layer. Unfortunately, this is the smallest size they make it in, so it's this or nothing.

Happiness factor on try-on was high because it's a wild card for me -- as Joy and Sisi pointed out, it's more of a statement than typical for me.

It was surprisingly warm on try on! It's just polyester. As Staysfit mentioned, coats like this are pretty much a waste except for those who drive all the time or run warm in my former climate. Not warm enough for anyone who spends time outdoors in Ontario winters. But it could work from late October through March here. I don't know how it would fare in the rain.

Chris, I thought exactly the same thing about my cat!! :)  A funny thing, also -- my kid used to have a large size snow leopard stuffy, a gift from friends. After she grew out of it, Mr. Suz started using it as a "neck pillow" because it was curved just so and he would stick it behind his head when reading in bed. We left it back in Ontario and he misses it. Maybe this can be his replacement? ;)

  • Bennett replied 5 years ago

If I spotted you wearing this I would think "that is the coolest woman in this place!" I would probably stalk you for a bit as well! I see no problem with size, probably due to the generous lapels. You really shine in this!

  • Angie replied 5 years ago

Suz, it looks like it's supposed to be oversized. VERY handy to layer over blazers and chunky knits. Could work over midis too.

I LOVE the drama for you.

  • Suz replied 5 years ago

Okay. I'm going to give it another try tomorrow or the next day. As I said, the price is right so it's not that big a risk.

In the 90s, I had a short "teddy" coat in a brown and taupe plaid. This was when I drove to work and didn't spend as much time outdoors. I loved the coat and wore it constantly. Its light weight made me happy as did the "cuddle" factor.

Angie, I was thinking it could (maybe) work over some midis...but only solid colours or certain patterns. Not sure it would work with the busy patterns of my two autumn midis. But we'll see.

I've been giving lots of thought to that toppers for midis question and collecting Finds for inspiration. (Alas, they have to be Custom Finds because for some reason the Finds Feature is working very irregularly for me even from sites that used to be no problem like Massimo Dutti and Gap.)

Anyway...I've come to the conclusion that I definitely need more coats/ toppers because I love wearing skirts/ dresses, especially midis, and in this climate I can do it more easily. So I need a few options, and right now, have zero. Shopping time! :)

  • replied 5 years ago

Finds features are not working well for me , either,  as infrequently as I use them these days though....

  • JAileen replied 5 years ago

That is such a good color for you. And cozy, too. Wait - you didn’t buy it?

  • Stagiaire Fash replied 5 years ago

So what’s the end of the story? Did you buy it?

  • unfrumped replied 5 years ago

I kind the colors but it looks big in this photo, size+ shape+ pattern so having trouble telling “ good drama” from too much. You may be able to tell better from seeing it from different angles and in motion.

  • Stagiaire Fash replied 5 years ago

I hope the non-response means “no”, because it has a heaviness to it that doesn’t suit you and because I think the Max Mara can do everything this one can, in a much more elegant and iconoclastic style.

  • replied 5 years ago

Looks so soft and furry :) but agreeing with Fashintern, something less bulky would be better.

  • Karie replied 5 years ago

Super fun! I love the oversized look.

  • Suz replied 5 years ago

Sorry. I missed out on it in my size. All sold out. I liked it but not enough for the price. Thanks for helping!

  • krishnidoux replied 5 years ago

Well, I don't think it's too bad. My voice will be dissident, AND I came in super late on this conversation, I realize I'm like a hair on a soup.

Of course, Suz, so many things look so good on you, and so did this jacket. You can totally pull off the oversize thing.

But this is my impression: the print was on the overpowering side. It was on the busy side as well. Then the coat was on the big side too. I thougtht it was overwhelming and stealing the show away from your beautiful hair. I am curious to see what you got instead.

  • Jenni NZ replied 5 years ago

Well, I did really like it on you. But something I am realising... We can love things, they can make us smile as this did for you, but it doesn't mean, even when they look good, that we will wear them. This has been a hard lesson for me but I think I'm getting it, yay! They must also have supporting acts AND be practical to wear AND not fussy. My 2018 purchases are much better in these ways and 4 of them have over 30 wears already in the one year.

  • krishnidoux replied 5 years ago

    Jenny good points.

  • Jenna B replied 5 years ago

Hi, Suz! I'm new here. Couldn't resist chipping in that I think you look FABULOUS in this coat.

I saw someone comment somewhere along this thread, though, that it was a bit bolder than is typically your style?

    My two cents:
If you LOVE it and are sure you'd wear it often and rock it with confidence, buy it because it truly does suit you.

However, if you're not sure how often you'd wear it or with how much confidence, then perhaps take a pass? Even if the price is right, more unworn clothing is STILL more unworn clothing needing long-term tending and storing.
