Fashion Era challenge: 70s menswear

This outfit (which I cannot wear today due to travel and POURING rain) is my nod to 70s Yves St. Laurent menswear. It's also an "ink out" look

GAP Long and Lean jeans (flares on me)
Reiss jacket in ink
Ann Taylor silk blouse in navy
Zara booties
Hipsi belt
Earrings from Israel -- they are my nod to boho
Fossil sunnies.

Interesting note: I removed the dangling earrings for Pic 2. All it took to make this feel less "costume" and more wearable today was the switch up of those earrings. The dangles plus the bow feel like too much for my personal style sensibility.

Another interesting tidbit: I find that -- whatever the decade -- I have a strong tendency to gravitate towards the menswear inspired looks of that decade. In searching pins, those are the ones I typically veer toward. OTOH, those looks are always "softened" with femininity -- they are menswear inspired vs. mannish. That is a great lesson in terms of where and how to refine my current style.

I am  really enjoying this challenge for the opportunities it offers to learn things like that. Thank you, Angie!

The inspirations are YSL runway looks from the mid-70s.

    WOOHOOOOO

Killer. I love the look with the dangly earrings actually. Without them - you are right - straight back into 2015. Perfect neck bow - and a gorgeous feminine touch.  VERY '70s.

    LOVE.

Bonus points for fun pose. Well done.

    SOO FAB!!!

Love this, Suz. Gorgeous bow and perfect only separates. I also like it a lot with the earrings.

You did the floppy bow! Fantastic!

Oh, Suz, I love this! You really have to get out and about in this (once the rains go) Sans earrings of course. So YSL and so now too. Love!

Amazing!  You look so sharp and sophisticated, but with the feminine touch of the bow.  A  smashing version of your inspiration photos.

I hear you on menswear.   Prior to the 1920s there were a lot of menswear looks that I loved (Victorian riding coats with tall boots?), and I loved the 'influenced by' menswear of later decades (Marlene Dietrich?  Patti Smith?).  I'd kind of love a menswear challange.

    Love this look!!!

Great interpretation! Those YSL pics really anticipate what happened in the 80's, which is not really a surprise when you think about it. Le Smoking was around 1966 but it expresses something we usually think of as 70's fashion.

And when you said 70's menswear, I was half expecting to find you wearing a kipper tie and Roger Sterling's new moustache. I am relieved to find you're not.

This is GORGEOUS! I think the earrings and glasses add a touch of the dramatic to the femininity of the blouse. I have been leaning towards skirts this season, but your Dress the Decade outfits have been so helpful to me in seeing how to incorporate the feminine into menswear styles.

Great outfit Suz but your self-analysis is what takes the cake for me.
    Nothing beats knowing thyself!

    Another great representation!

Love the juxtaposition of masculine and feminine here, in both your version and the inspiration.

Fab looks Suz & ha, I have both those photos in my inspiration file :)

I love your distinction between "...menswear inspired vs. mannish." That is why I love Armani. He took mannish jackets relaxed all the tailoring, put in softer interfacing & made them work better on women.

You keep hitting home runs, even with a travel wardrobe!  Kudos to you, Suz!  Hope you get sunshine for those flares tomorrow!

Suz, this outfit is now fighting your mod one for top fave.  I know you like to feel feminine, but to my eyes you ARE feminine and this androgynous dressing suits you (pun intended) just perfectly.

I know pretty much nothing about 70s menswear, but I love how this feels like a really unexpected combination, yet still totally like you.

  • Jaime replied 8 years ago

Really well done and I think it looks great on you too! I am also drawn to just those sort of inspiration pictures. The jacket with the bootlegs is a great combination and the perfectly tied scarf really adds that special touch of artistry!

This is so fab!  And you know you could wear this out and look thoroughly modern.

    Another fab rendition, Suz!

This is a wonderful take on the 70s, Suz. It also suits you very well. I love the inspitation pictures, too.

SUZ! I love this on you! Menswear-inspired but very feminine as well! :) I can see that you feel happy in this look!

  • jackiec replied 8 years ago

    Another great rendition!

Wow -great interpretation!  That jacket is so sharp looking and then the soft bow for juxtaposition.
