Flirting with linen, plus two FABiversary Finds

Linen and I have not broken up. I do keep a certain amount of distance from linen, but I'm open to flirtation.

Also, I'm a sucker for names. For one of my creative and academic projects, I'm hard at work in the archives. So when was online at Aritzia in search of something else and saw the Archive shirt in SUSAN-stripe....let's just say it mysteriously wound up in my bag. :)

This is an oversized linen shirt. Very oversized -- as you can see. So it stands away from the body. It has tabs to rein in the sleeves. Being linen, it is light, so it can be fully tucked, despite its bigness, and it can also be tied in front for a sort of blouson. This colourway (they have tons) is a bright navy with a very thin ivory stripe.

I haven't cut the tags but I think I'm keeping it. I like some sun coverage in summer and this shirt feels breezy and cool in both senses of the word. I really like the cut. And the slight pattern (and dark colour) help to disguise wrinkles.

I am wearing it with my new white crops. These replace my Zara ones from last year, which I loved so much in theory, but which mysteriously always wrinkled worse than linen, despite being 100% cotton and so crisp on first acquaintance. They drove me up the wall -- even with ironing the wrinkles did not seem to come out or stay out for more than 5 minutes!

The jeans are Ralph Laurens from the petites section, which Angie found for me. Angie and Inge were so patient. We tried on a lot of frogs to find this prince. Well, to be fair, some of them were not exactly frogs, but maybe minor dukes? Anyway, these felt perfect from the second I zipped them up. Sizing up in petites can work for me so that is what we did. I've been wearing them on repeat already.

The shoes are the loafers I ended up keeping! In a frenzy of delight that a loafer, ANY loafer would stay on my feet, I bought the pretty blue perforated ones at full price at Nordstrom (and they were pricey in CAD$ -- about $200.) But they were size 7 (my typical US size) and required an insole on one side to stay on. Then, when I saw the silver in size 6.5 for a mere $44 US at the Rack, and tried it on, and it fit much better, I returned the blue ones in favour of these.

These are the Vionic Uptown loafer and they are a miracle shoe for me! I've been wearing them nonstop and am considering a second pair. Ideally, I'd love a loafer with a less sporty/ sneakerish sole, but this fit my purposes completely for this summer and they are workhorses already.

Thanks for looking!

Love the shirt, gorgeous. Untucked is my preference. So pretty and perfect with white jeans and silver loafers. Fabulous finds for summer. Good thing finding the loafers at a much better price. Silver may be even more versatile.

  • JAileen replied 2 weeks ago

Very nice!  This is how I wear my linen tops - untucked with cropped pants.  It’s my dressy summer uniform.  The shoes are great, and how lucky to find them at the Rack!

  • Indigoprint replied 2 weeks ago

Suz I love the subtle strip in that topper. Looks great on you!
I have not broken up with linen. I am trying to cut back though as I have a shamefully large collection. I sorted through my 12 white linens with the intention to purge and only put 1 in a holding spot. Still need to go through my blues, greys and stripes.
My rationalization for the whites is I only wear one 1 time then into the wash it goes. To me that keeps them pristine. I have 4- Flax white linen tops that are over 30 years old and they still look clean and fresh and I can depend on them when the heat and humidity rise.
I'm off to check out your new purchase

This outfit is just sublime on you, Suz! I love the oversized shirt style for you, especially with those adorable, perfectly fitting jeans and the new silver loafers. I don't associate you with oversized clothing, so this shirt is a pleasant surprise. It looks equally fab untucked and semi-tucked.
Great to hear about your find and switcheroo with the loafers--score!

  • Dee replied 2 weeks ago

Your new linen shirt looks so easy and breezy, great colour and I like the pinstripe, should be a great addition especially when the hot weather kicks in. Love those silver loafers too, how wonderful to get them at such a great price, happy to hear that you've finally found a pair that works well for your feet.

  • Angie replied 2 weeks ago

    What Sharan said!

Suz, OF COURSE you have to keep the SUSAN shirt. Fashion forward and very summery! Suits you beautifully!! As do with new KILLER white wide crop jeans and sporty silver miracle loafers! How did you live without them? ;)

Sublime shopping day with you and Inge! You hit the jackpot at the Rack and at Nordies! WOOOHOOOO!

  • Carol replied 2 weeks ago

Such a great shirt--I love blue, I love a stripe....and I really love the dolman-type sleeve. I'm not sure what the Aritzia archive is, though.

  • Inge replied 2 weeks ago

Navy, thin stripe, named Susan… of course you had to get this fun shirt!-) I love the oversized fit on you, such a breezy option for warm weather.

Angie and I loved jeans shopping with you, Suz!! We loved these white crops the second you came out of the fitting room and we could tell you loved them too.

We really did score at The Rack, didn’t we!-) I’m thrilled you found the silver version in the perfect size at such a great price. I tried them on too, and could immediately tell this is a comfortable shoe. If I hadn’t been between sizes, I would have gotten them too. Soooo happy you finally found loafers that stay on, and super stylish to boot, yay!

  • slim cat replied 2 weeks ago

Perfect outfit! Love everything - especially silver shoes ( envy - my old metallic shoes are gone mostly because of comfort issues )!

  • Ket replied 2 weeks ago

Golly, is that the best linen shirt I think I've ever seen. I mean that! This outfit is summer perfection on you. Love the shirt's chalk stripe. Love the silver metallic shoe. Love your wide leg crop pants. l loveth! xo

  • avicennia replied 2 weeks ago

The subtle strip makes the shirt!

  • Janet replied 2 weeks ago

Love the shirt on you! I have a navy shirt with subtle metallic stripes like this, but it’s short sleeved. One of my summer favorites!

I also have those Vionic loafers in silver! They are sooooo comfortable and don’t slip off my heels, shockingly enough. I did have to put cushiony insoles in them to take up a little extra room, but that’s no problem.

    You look great!

  • LJP replied 2 weeks ago

    That’s a great look , Suz ! I love all 3 pieces for you :)

  • Jaime replied 2 weeks ago

Fantastic new pieces and story behind them. I love the oversized top on you and would leap at that piece even if it weren't named after me :) . Good point about petites and sizing up. Although I am petite height I rarely wear petites for one reason or the other but if I do they are in a bigger than usual size. And am very glad you found your Cinderella loafers - yes I would stalk them in other colors too.

  • Debbie replied 2 weeks ago

Perfect outfit! I love how you showed the shirt different ways and I think it works well every way. Those loafers are fab and I hope you can find another pair that works.

  • Angie replied 2 weeks ago

White is one of your best colours, Suz

  • Suz replied 2 weeks ago

Thanks, everyone! Debbie, I hope I can find another pair of loafers, too. I would duplicate these in another colour but eventually would like some with a less "sneaker" like sole for the fall.

Jaime, like you, I rarely wear petites -- but in this case it worked.

    Janet, loafer twin, yay!

Lisa, avicenna, ket, slim cat -- thanks!

Inge, we did score at the Rack for sure, even if we had to work for it! :)

Carol, the Archive is just the name of the shirt. I'm working in a real archive (library).

    Angie, thanks!

    Dee, Sharan, thanks again!

Indigoprint, wow -- it sounds like you have a complete summer linen wardrobe! Amazing! Do you find it softens with washing? I think that can sometimes be true. But you manage to keep yours for so long -- that is brilliant!

Jaileen -- I can see you in this top, too!

    Star, thank you!

  • Kyle replied 2 weeks ago

It’s really great when you find good items you love that slip seamlessly into your wardrobe, fill gaps, and work. The crisp white of those crops is  ideal for summer, and I empathize with your loafer problem. It’s so difficult and frustrating trying to find something that actually fits! You’ve  got a pretty summer vibe going, and now I hope you get some equally beautiful weather.

  • Aquamarine replied 2 weeks ago

Great score! I’ll have to zip into Aritzia and check out the colors of that shirt too. I don’t mind linen! The blue especially looks fab over the white crops. So glad you found loafers…I know they’ve been difficult to fit.

  • delurked replied 2 weeks ago

White pants really work on you, and glad you found some Vionic loafers. I found a pair of silver Vionic sandals on clearance recently, which is my first foray into that brand. I'm not too surprised we both like the silver sandals. I do love metallic footwear.

I adore your top. Floaty linen can be so nice, and I think the longer length just in back perhaps makes the whole oversized look a little less overwhelming. Did you stick with your regular size, or size down?

  • Suz replied 2 weeks ago

delurked, wow you look great in that brilliant turquoise linen shirt, white pants, and silver shoes! Glad the Vionic sandals are working well for you. I should see if I can get a pair of those on sale, hmmmm.....

I really like your linen collection. Several of the items are more structured than is typical, even though they hang loose from the body. Nice colours, too.

Aquamarine, I'm not sure how many colours they would have in store but online there is quite a selection.

Kyle - thank you! The weather is so much better than it was when you were in Seattle. This week is a bit cooler than last week, but still definitely spring (and not miserable winter) weather. You had such rotten luck with all the hail.

  • delurked replied 2 weeks ago

Suz - the sandals are on the roomy side for me, so I fear they will be too wide for you. The save for me is the velcro down at the forefoot to stop my foot from moving forward in them. I've actively been seeking more arch support, which I know Vionic is pretty well regarded for.

  • Brooklyn replied 2 weeks ago

Love the shirt. Love everything! Thanks for the report. It sounds like it was a fun and successful trip.

  • pirouette replied 2 weeks ago

Perfect outfit Suz the oversized shirt looks great with the new jeans. You are so lucky to have had the A team of fashion Inge and Angie to shop with you. Fantastic you got the loafers especially at such a great price.

  • Laurie replied 2 weeks ago

Looking fab, Suz. I love this outfit and the backstory. Shoes are especially good!

  • sarah replied 2 weeks ago

Great finds! I got those loafers in the blue perforated version and have already worn them a bunch. Love the silver ones on you! Looks like the get-together was a blast, and you did very well with your purchases.

  • Bonnie replied 2 weeks ago

Your new outfit is great and how fun that you found it with YLF help at the meet up!

  • Ms. Liz replied 2 weeks ago

You look wonderful in the new shirt and I love those wide crops!  It is so difficult to find petite sizes in jeans in Canada.  I get tired of settling for regular sized “crops” as full length jean wear on me.  Those Vionic Uptown loafers are the best!  I have 3 pair (navy suede, gunmetal metallic and bone) and they so comfortable and go with many wardrobe choices.  They travel really well too.  Vionic Canada is located in Richmond, B.C.   You should check out their website as the Uptown Loafer comes in many colour ways.

  • Suz replied 2 weeks ago

Ms. Liz -- I normally can't wear petites because of the rise, but I have had some luck with regular "crops" becoming full length on me -- it was a nice change up for a while! (Normally I have to have trousers hemmed.) Thanks for the info on the loafers. I am definitely considering another pair. Even as house shoes, they are super comfy and I love the ease of slip on.

Bonnie, yes, it was so fun to shop with Angie and the Fabbers.

Sarah, we might have been shoe twins! I do like the perforated version, which is not available in Canada. But the price difference was signficant. And the fit was better in the smaller size.  So, silver made sense.

Laurie -- we are so often on the samem page about footwear! You might want to try these.

Pirouette, thank you -- it was so lucky to get to shop with Angie and the rest! I had to break my no visit to the US vow, but it was worth it. :)

Brooklyn, I thought of you several times as we were shopping, either seeing a skirt you would have dyed brilliantly, or a colour you'd have gravitated towards.

delurked -- thanks -- that is good info. I will avoid ordering the final sale version of those!

  • Lisa replied 2 weeks ago

Lovely new outfit for summer! The oversized vibe of the shirt is so fun, relaxed and casual. The white crops are such a good length on you and look like a perfect fit, a lovely find. The silver loafers are the icing on the cake for this outfit, I also struggle with the fit of loafers, how wonderful that you found a pair that look like real workhorse potential! Excellent new wardrobe additions!
