Help me pick some casual sandals

Hi, all -- I have been scarce here for a variety of reasons, but popping in as I have been able. I hope to follow up with Angie's fantasy/ reality challenge next week if I can, now that I am home; that looked like fun and a good learning opportunity.

But for now, I'd love your thoughts on some sandals.

I need to replace my Sofft Bernias. (Find 1) I loved them literally to death last year.

So far, I haven't found much in the stores near me that fits the bill. I need comfortable, walkable, flattering, not frumpy, and not completely flat. I really loved the Bernia anthracite last year and would be happy with a metallic for this purpose.

(My other sandals are: comfy but higher heeled taupe cage sandals, similar to Find 2; black high vamp open toed sandals -- comfort is only medium because the peep toe bothers me a bit, unlike on the caged sandals Find 3; a less comfy wedge with silver and nude that are not all-day shoes, same shoe but different colourway to Find 4).

Options I'm considering as "Bernia replacements" are Finds 5,6,7.

In addition to a Bernia replacement, I have also been searching hi and low for white sandals -- as in, I've been looking for 3 years and not finding.

And/or I wouldn't mind adding a brightly coloured sandal or shoe -- but I might wait for mid-season sales to do that.

Complicating all this is that I can't find any of the ones I'm considering in Canada for under $240. UGH

Would love your thoughts on these and any other options you might have noticed. Especially if I can source in Canada.

I can always order to my US address and pick up at the border, but the next month is crazy busy for me and I am not sure I'll have time to do it -- always a problem.

Thanks in advance!!

Sorry, I like them all so am of no help to you.  Just wanted to say hi.

  • abc replied 8 years ago

Great to see you. I prefer last year's version. I don't care for the big piece on the top of the foot on this year's version but that's just me. I like the metallic pair at the end a lot. Please keep us posted as my needs are virtually the same as yours. I ended up with both colors of the us two sandals by gentle souls but they're more casual than what you're showing here.

Great to see you post again! Hope your travels went well.

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

    Waving at Sterling, thanks!

I am totally with you about the large piece in the middle, abc. I don't like this year's version as much at all.

I like your Finds a lot but fear they would be too flat for me. A completely flat shoe seems to tire me out a lot -- I need about an inch of lift to feel supported.

I like the ones at the end, too, but have no experience of the brand so hesitate to order. Sigh.

  • Susie replied 8 years ago

    Good to see you Suz!

Sandals are tough for me...it seems easy to stray into frumpy territory with low heels. I can say that the Louise et Cie pair of shoes I have (oxfords not sandals) is nice quality. I think it's a Vince Camuto brand.

But after reading Rachy's post on "boca" sandals that heel gives me pause. Of your finds, I prefer the nude and metallic one.

  • Joy replied 8 years ago

Of the ones you have "found", I like the Sofft Vanita best (6). The style looks very modern and color is almost white. I've also been looking for a white sandal and not finding one I love.

  • Aubergine replied 8 years ago

    Really good to see you!

I've been looking for sandals too, since a bunch of mine need to be replaced.  I'm adding a few of the ones I was looking at in case any spark your interest. I know the Lily Moon comes in a bunch more colors on Amazon, and the Eileen Fisher one (which I just ordered when it was on sale and I really like) comes in a taupey-gray that you might like more than the black.

I also really like the Vanitas and the Louise et Cie ones. I actually keep seeing the Vanitas online and liking them, then discovering that they never come in my size anywhere.

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 8 years ago

I'm with Joy. I like the Sofft Vanita as a replacement for your Bernias. It looks like your style, and the cream shade will serve as an almost-white.  And they will probably offer the same comfort as your Bernias. With the Sam Edelmans, I wouldn't expect quite the same comfort. Probably ditto for Louise et Cie, looking at the sole and heel.

P.S. If you need someone to pick them up (or receive them) and send them to you, let me know. I don't know if that saves $$ or not.

  • abc replied 8 years ago

Not an inch but there is a little heel. See pics.

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

Thanks for those suggestions, Aubergine. I might check our local Clark's seller to see if those gladiators are in stock. The fit can be iffy in Clark's on me but it's worth a shot. Love your Eileen Fishers but don't need another taupe sandal with a higher heel/wedge.

Joy, thanks for the vote for the Vanitas. I wish I could try them on -- not sure they would be frumpy on an actual foot, you know?

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

Firecracker, thanks. Has anyone seen them on an actual foot? I am curious....maybe I'll see what photos they show on the Sofft website.

abc, yes -- I really like the shape. I would have to try on to see. Typically it wouldn't be enough of a lift for real comfort for me. .

  • Elizabeth P replied 8 years ago

Gah... Ipad not cooperating and I keep losing my response. So for now I'll just say hi. Hi! Hope you had a great trip. I'll be back tomorrow with a couple of white sandals I found,, assuming my computer is more friendly.

  • Aubergine replied 8 years ago

I actually ordered the Clarks gladiators to try too (like I said, I'm replacing a lot of sandals) and they fit well and seem pretty comfy, at least as far as I can tell from a quick try-on. Although Clarks seem to fit pretty reliably on me, so that may not be super-useful feedback for you, but I do definitely recommend them.

  • Beth Ann replied 8 years ago

Sandals are so fun!  I like the Clark "Viveca Rome" that Aubergine posted, but I wonder if you might something a little less detailed -- a little more bold and minimal?

  • Dixie replied 8 years ago

I didn't read the answers but my vote goes for #9 & #7.

  • DJP replied 8 years ago

My vote goes to the Vanita's . They look modern and are are nice blend of casual yet refined. If you would like to order them and send to the US I would be happy to pick them up and then mail them to you in Canada. I mailed some shoes to Ontario last month and it was $ 17.00 with the tracking, so even with the exchange rate it would be considerably less than $240.00. Not knowing the fit is kind of a problem but you could always return them from your US address when you find some time. Send me a PM if you are interested and I can give you the particulars. Shoppers gotta shop!

  • Ariadne replied 8 years ago

I was also going to suggest Ckarks, in particular the Vivecas, If I get to a Nordstrom this month I plan to check them out. Will report back.

Saltwater Sandals come in white. They're super casual through, and pretty flat. But practical.

  • Joyce B replied 8 years ago

I think the Soft Breeze in metallic can work similarly to the Bernias. My Bernias are still good for this year otherwise I would try the Breeze too.
The cage booties and the black ones are nice too, as are all the others you showed.
I have not found a nice white sandal that works for me either.
It's nice to see you back on the forum, Suz.

  • Style Fan replied 8 years ago

I like the Vanitas from your finds.  I have a hard time finding sandals that are comfy (that is a very difficult given my feet), not frumpy and in a colour I like.

  • Neelie replied 8 years ago

I tried the Steve Madden open toed sandal/bootie things you have in #3 above and found them rather uncomfortable, but the Franco Sarto version is fantastic and comes in a beautiful soft white.  Here is the link to Capezio (available in Canada) http://www.capezioshoes.ca/mon.....USrNiFViko
Their black version is suede and so soft.  $135 so reasonable.

For metalics these Naturalizers are very comfy, though may be too flat for you http://www.naturalizer.ca/Shop.....pg=7008222  $90.

    http://chaussuresleclerc.com/p.....E-2-5-PO/6

I just picked one pair but they have lots of interesting comfortable shoe choices.

And you might consider the Pikolinos brand generally, I find them very comfortable.

White sandals are tricky. I have a pair from last summer and I love them, but there can be something inherently nerdy about them that you have to embrace.

  • viva replied 8 years ago

I'm also voting for the Vanitas. I like the cool minimal vibe there.

And I hear you on the problem finding white sandals. I have the same problem with them as with white sneakers. It's, as Ummlilla says, that "inherently nerdy" factor. I like nerdy in clothing but not in footwear, apparently. :)

  • Pat_P replied 8 years ago

For what it's worth, I ordered the Breezes to try and liked them much better on my foot than in the pictures. I also tried the Vanita, but the heel was a little high for me and I didn't like the look of it was much on my (admittedly large) foot.

  • lisaflex replied 8 years ago

i ordered #4 - they should be here next week. they look super cute. hopefully they are comfy!

  • texstyle replied 8 years ago

Been missing you Suz and glad to see you post. I like the last ones and the cream/gold ones. I found these also - but no idea of fit/comfort.

  • Tanya replied 8 years ago

Yet another vote for Clark Vanitas, I like them by far the best from all the options posted, and they are probably going to be very comfy.  I hear you on the search for white sandals.  I lucked out  last summer and found the pair which was off white/bone that I liked much better on my feet that bright white for the less stark effect.

  • Elizabeth P replied 8 years ago

Hi Suz... just did some scouting on shoeme.com.  There are a lot of awful sandals there, but a few nice ones too :).  Not sure if any of these are what you are looking for, but might be worth taking a look over there...  Free shipping and returns!

It would be really difficult to order sandals without having tried them on. Those straps and cutouts...you never know just by looking if they are going to rub, hit a nerve or trap a pinky toe.

  • Beth Ann replied 8 years ago

oooooohhh!  Love the ones Tanya posted.  Popped back on to say I like the Vanita's too.  I do pause at a white leather wedge heel.  I find a light wrapped heel hard to keep clean and gouge-free.  You know that right heel that gets dirty and scuffed from driving?

  • frannieb replied 8 years ago

lots of great options - they all look great - waiting to see which ones you choose.

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

Oh, you guys are the BEST!!! THANK YOU!!

Beth Ann, I absolutely get what you are saying about leather wedge heel. It seems inherently problematic, doesn't it.

Tanya, I LOVE those ones you posted. Are they comfy? (And, can I find them in Canada? But that is another question -- off to search soon!)

Elizabeth, thank you for your sleuthing. Off to follow up on your options. I did go to ShoeMe (that is where I found the $240 Sofft Breeze...sigh....) The prices are killing me. I was travelling and working during Bay Days so missed those great sales, alas...

Tex, those are really pretty, but maybe a bit dressy for what I'm after. I want something sort of in between, really -- not easy to find, I suspect.

PatP -- that is helpful to know about the Breezes. Thank you. I was wondering how they looked on an actual foot.

Vivian -- yeah -- I think a problem with white sandals is the sole, as Beth Ann already alluded to. White seems crazy. Black looks dumb (a lot of the time). Crepey tan looks ...uh...frumpy. And so on.

But Neelie, I LOVE those Franco Sartos -- they are FAB. I might just have to try those. They're not the super casual almost flat walking sandal I NEED, but they would certainly work into my closet really really easily and would probably have some longevity. Hmmmm.

Ummlilla, thank you for the link. I think I'm after something with more minimal styling than the Pikolinos. I'm not sure they are comfortable for me, either, as a brand -- I've tried them on and did not have happy feet, although I know that others adore them for comfort and it could have been fluke. Still, the reason the Breeze appeals less than the Bernia did is the "busy" element of the styling -- it's something Pikolinos tend towards.

DJP -- that is SO sweet to offer to send them to me. I will mull it over today and get back to you. Thank you.

Style Fan, Ariadne, Joyce, Joy, Dixie, Lisa -- thank you! Appreciate your thoughts and comments. Joy, I so hear you on the try-on element with sandals....

  • replied 8 years ago

Suz - I'm having a flashback to perhaps having discussed this already , but have you looked at anything from Fly London this season?  I've become a recent convert and found a really great pair for summer among what struck me as a LOT of options for once.  Lots of colour options, heel height options, and of course the comfort level is through the roof. But something's tell me they don't work for you?  Anyways - food for thought.   And, while in the mall yesterday with DD, I noticed  brand new Rockport store - didn't go in, but it looked full of that sort of thing.

I'm home for 4 weeks recovering from surgery and just had a talk with myself yesterday about how I need to stop online shopping to combat the boredom.  Then this thread came along, I'm in love with the Vanita's.  I thought they'd be too narrow since they fit you well and I have a widish foot, then I found they had a wide available in my size.  I was powerless.

I'm super excited to get them.  I love metallic sandals, and have been wanting a pair of white sandals that seems intentional rather than matronly or sterile.

Thanks for the inspiration, Suz!  I always envied your Berninas.

  • Angie replied 8 years ago

I'm working with a client today, but will weigh in later, Suz.

  • Tanya replied 8 years ago

Suz, the sandals I posted (and have) are ridiculously comfy, but they are from last year.  They are still available in couple of places in limited sizes.  What size do you need?
I am not too familiar with the Luxury Rebel brand, but last summer there were tons of their sandals in stores, similar to the ones I posted, and all were very comfy.

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

Frannieb -- cross posted with you -- thanks!

Lisa, the Flys are super cool but I have never tried on a style of Flys that fit me properly. I have this problem with most British sized shoes, to tell you the truth. I seem to be between sizes or something. Docs are similar. I'm pretty much a perfect EU 37.

Still, I could try a few more pair just to see.....

    Thanks, Angie!

Traci, I'm laughing -- I think those Vanitas are going to look fab on you.

I see they also come in pewter so that might be my best bet. The heel is a little higher than the Breeze, though -- which might not make them my perfect casual walking shoe. Hmmm....

Tanya, thank you -- I'll check the links and see....

  • SandyG replied 8 years ago

Suz, I want to add that Tsubo makes wonderful walkable sandals, so be sure to check them out.

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

    Thanks, Sandy -- I'll take a look.

And Lisa, the Yulas look to be sized like EU shoes -- do you think this is accurate? They MIGHT work due to the ankle strap, which would hold them on. The sling back styles for sure won't work for my foot. I really like the Yulas (remember admiring them on you). I still would need a more flat sandal. Not completely flat, but walkable all day wear with shorts flat. I walk for miles in the summer (well, any time, really) and like a shoe that goes that distance but also looks good. (This is why my Bernias wore out in a season).

I'm just realizing that if I order everything I love here, I'm going to have quite a collection of summer footwear! I also have my Okalas (not for long walks, obviously) and my Cons (for less hot days).

  • replied 8 years ago

Suz - the Yulas are brand new for me - you won't have seen them on me :)  (I have another pair from a few years ago of another style ).  I ordered a 38, which is what I wear in Naot and Birkenstock....because they aren't closed in at the back, there is room for error, so to speak. Anyways, they fit as usual on me.  I do wear a 39 though in shoes from Browns and other stores with fake EU sizing:)

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

Hmmm. I thought we'd seen these on you in a WIW but it must have been the older ones. I do remember we had a Fly conversation.

There's a store in town that sells Flys but they do not have this style, alas. I would need to try on for sure, because every style I have tried of this brand has not fit right.

  • Angie replied 8 years ago

Suz, before I come up with style options - why the hesitation with ordering shoes online? I get most of my shoes online because of the much larger variety. I know you need Canadian stores because the duties are hectic - but are there other reasons?

And can you wear a heel as low as the Rebel Luxury style?

The gold Isola Wedge has been a hit with clients, but I suspect it's too gold for you. Vanitas are worth a go. Perhaps you'll like the Ilanas.

  • replied 8 years ago

I shouldn't answer for Suz, but Angie - for us in Canada, it's the cost of shipping and returns. It's not free like it is in the US.   Plus, the US Cdn exchange can put many of these choices out of a sensible price range for us. Right now our dollar is 20% more expensive than yours. This is why I don't shop online . Shipping, exchange, duties, taxies  and the potential cost of a return put a $100 shoe at close to $175 by the time we get it .

  • Karie replied 8 years ago

I like the Breeze, Phoenix, and the Ilana's. If it's a good way to go, I can order them and send them to you.

  • Angie replied 8 years ago

Lisa, are the sums the same when buying from online Canadian stores? Or are you referring to buying from US online stores in Canada?

  • Dottie replied 8 years ago

I had such a difficult time finding a metallic sandal as well.  I actually had a Sofft anthracite sandal from 2-3+ years ago that finally died.  I've replaced them with the Sam Edelman Angela sandal. They are cute, have a small heel, are super comfy but, unfortunately, not metallic.

  • Sveta replied 8 years ago

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

Angie, Lisa is correct. I used to order from Nordstrom's and pick up at the border (to avoid returns costs -- I could simply mail it back for free on site if an item didn't work, and pay duty or not, depending on the agent and how much I was bringing back and how long I had been away.) When our dollar was more or less at par with US it was super smart shopping!

But now it is really prohibitive with our CAD being so low relative to US. There is also the time/ gas factor. A 3 hour round trip for me to the border. And right now time's really at a premium in my life. Online shopping is supposed to be convenient, but it's not if you have to spend tons of time doing it.

Don't get me wrong. I'll still do order online within Canada if I can, and even across the border, if it makes sense, but unless I KNOW the fit of the shoe already it is far too risky.

Consider the famous butt vest skirted leggings. Those came from China, and while the original price was under $100, eventually I got a duty bill. I did recoup some of the $$ by selling them, but asked for far less than what I paid for them so overall I took a greater than $60 loss on this failed attempt. Ditto the H&M blouse I bought from Una. It didn't work out, and now I'm stuck with it, at a price of about $60 CAD. This is not a complaint, by the way. I knew I was taking risks with those items and WANTED to experiment. So that's okay! It's just that if experimenting with clothes is a risk, experimenting with shoes is even riskier.

Meanwhile, even if I can source the same shoe in Canada, it is often up to $100 more. The Sofft Breeze in anthracite is now $100 US at Nordstroms. It is $240 CAD at the one Canadian site where it's available.

Phew -- forgive me for that gripe!! :)

I could wear the Rebel Luxury if it felt comfy, for sure. It has some support and lift. But doesn't come in my size any more, alas.

Someone today said I might be able to get my Bernias resoled. It looks doubtful to me because the leather on the heel is even worn away a bit, but it might be worth investigating!

Failing that, I might take up the kind offer from Karie or another member and order the Vanitas to their address -- I really like the pewter. And the price at Nordstrom's makes it worth a try, especially since I now know how the brand fits me.

Thank you all for your help -- I'll keep you posted!

  • Sveta replied 8 years ago

Angie, Canadian prices are higher usually. For me the biggest issue is shipping , duties and especially returns. Without an exchange rate just the shipping and duties can come up to 40%  of the original price. But returns are the worst. When you have hard to fit shoes your return rate is very high and if they are not free it is a staggering expense.

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

Angie, the prices are much higher at Canadian stores than at the US stores and the variety much lower. Shoe me is one of the best and I might order from them -- they do have free returns. But that's the place where the Breeze cost $240 CAD. It does give you a sense of where things are at.

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

Sveta, thank you! Yes, I had checked there and found some of the options you suggested, although some are new to me! I might just bite the bullet and order a few to try. They do have the Breeze in blue, also, so I could order the Vanitas in silver and the Breeze in blue (which would also be useful to me) and maybe find a white one later on.

Thanks so much for all the searching on my behalf -- I appreciate it all!

  • Sveta replied 8 years ago

Suz, shoeme often has promotions - right now it is 20%off and looks like Sofft is included. At least you can order them to try and then if it is cheaper to order from US with somebody's help - at least you will be sure of the fit.

  • Angie replied 8 years ago

GOOD GRIEF. Shopping in the US is SOOOOO much better. Wow. I had no idea. Thanks for the extensive explanations Suz, Lisa & Sveta.

  • Sveta replied 8 years ago

That price for  metallic Breeze on shoeme is crazy! $240 vs $145 for the same model in blue. But others are not that bad. With 20% off they come pretty close to US price converted to CAD. I think they are worth a try!

  • replied 8 years ago

Angie - this is why Americans are able to afford brands that we can't as easily: Vince, Theory, etc. Your entire economy is different than ours- you live in bigger houses, drive more expensive cars....and but clothes that are reasonable for you but usually a major investment for us. It's a different economic culture. That's why it's often frustrating to see three great clothes posted here - and not really be able to buy them. My best example : Vince pants are $450 here - at least. Smythe jackets? They START at $600. Anyways- it's a fact of life for us.

  • Jaime replied 8 years ago

Wow, this thread has made me dizzy Suz! And, of course, I just want to be able to take you sandal shopping with me and get you sorted out in person. Well let you sort yourself anyway. Am very sympathetic to the frustration of not being able to easily try and return all these great suggestions of course!

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

We do get a few deals, though. Club Monaco is one example. Not that this is inexpensive -- but relative to the US it is cheaper for us because they pay the same price in US dollars that we pay in Canadian dollars. At least so far. That might change with the current exchange rates...

  • replied 8 years ago

Ah the frustrations of Canadian shopping...

Suz, sounds like you've received lots of help already. I like the Breeze sandals, mainly because for me, if something works, I like to stick to it. Lots of other great suggestions, though.

I second the Shoeme suggestion. I've bought and returned four times with them this spring - great shipping both ways. And there is always a sale if you wait (yes probably 20% now too).

But wouldn't it just be heaven to be able to walk into a Nordstrom shoe dept at will and try try try things on?.... Ah dreams....

and welcome back - great to see you safely home :)

  • Elizabeth P replied 8 years ago

Suz, shipping from shoeme is quick. Why not order those 240 ones purely to size them, then get them from Nordies if they work? I've done this with bay shoes before ;).
Also... Try calling Nordstroms in Ottawa to see if they carry anything that you are interested in from the U.S. store. I got the impression they'd send them to you for free, (and free returns) if they are on the Canadian inventory. I didn't persue this, but will.

  • ma replied 8 years ago

Ok I haven't followed this entire thread...shopping US stores is difficult from Canada, but are you able to shop 6pm.com? I noticed they have the Bernias you like... So if nothing else tickles your fancy, you may be able to duplicate

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

Maia, thanks -- 6 pm doesn't deliver to Canada OR take our credit cards. It's a bust for us, alas.

Also, those Bernias appear on the site but in fact are not available in my size. Double darn.

Jackie, thanks! Good advice, I suspect.

Elizabeth, I had not thought of calling Nordstrom's in Ottawa. That's an idea for sure. I wonder if they price match to the US site? Hmmm......

  • Gaylene replied 8 years ago

I just wanted to give my fellow Canadians a bit of a caution about ShoeMe's "free" shipping. The ShoeMe price for the Munro Zena sandals that Sveta found on the site is $250, which would make them around $280-290 after tax. Interesting, because I bought the exact pair last week and paid $225 (full price plus GST and PST) at a B&M shop in Victoria.

As if that wasn't bad enough, the 20% discount which flashes briefly when you first visit the site has a LONG list of excluded brands, Munro included. To Canadian online shoe shoppers, "free" shipping means having to pay a pretty hefty surcharge which ShoeMe adds to the retail price of most of their shoes.

Suz, to get a sense of what the Vanita looks like on a foot, the Zappos site has a video.  IIRC, it's the navy version and not the one(s) that interest you, unfortunately.

Oh, and the Vanita has a flexible sole which I would not necessarily expect eyeballing the sandal.

    Hello again. :)
Just found these while looking for something else. Don't know if Ecco fits you, but when the do, they are amazingly comfy!

ETA: They actually have a few options that might work as the bronzy neutral you are trying to find.

Elizabeth, do you think it looks dorky in the white?

Ecco CAN fit me well -- depends. (Some are fantastic, others no good at all; they seem to have a couple of footbeds.)

    And thanks!

Hmm... good question.  I do think I'd prefer it with a cork heel rather than white.  I confess I find white shoes difficult.

    Helpful, huh :)

FWIW, I don't think the white looks dorky.

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

Thanks, Angie. I might be able to see that one in person; we have a store that sells Ecco and if they have that style they may have it in white. Or on a trip to TO.

I'm still debating what to order or do. Someone told me I might be able to get the Bernias resoled. I could get another year out of them, doing that.

Good heavens. That's a lot of replies. I haven't been through all of them yet to see if someone else has mentioned these. The link is from Amazon. Not sure what happens there with shipping to Canada?
