How I wear a plaid shirt

Chris's question gave me today's outfit.

In fact I just took this shirt out of storage. I usually only wear it in true winter because it's pretty warm. But today is one of those warm fall days where layered over a cami it might work on its own with a topper when I go outdoors. We'll see.

What I might wear, sometime -- with the gilet (too dressy for today's activities) and/or (just for Approprio) with the pink jacket (once I deal with the buttons.)

By the way, apologies for photo quality. I promise I will deal with the DSLR soon. The backlighting here makes things difficult.

Great Ideas Suz! I particularly love it with the red suede booties. The way you have styled it is so much dressier than I normally think of for flannel shirts....which is one of the ideas I was looking for. Might have to order this one...

  • replied 7 years ago

    All three renditions are awesome!

  • Eliza replied 7 years ago

How does Suz wear a plaid shirt? With flair and finesse. Beautiful. I like them all and the booties are amazing...

  • Isabel replied 7 years ago

Wow !!  I particularly LOVE 1 and 2.  Are the boots red and the jacket fuchsia ?  Just amazing !!!!!!!

  • Muffin replied 7 years ago

The necklace! I just responded on Chris's post about preferring a more dressed up version of plaid and on Angie's blog I talked about how I am trying to add more necklaces/accessories. Suz, you are the inspiration!!!

  • approprio replied 7 years ago

Yep, great with the boots. I'm even starting to like the buttons. Kind of cool in contrast with the plaid shirt, but fighting a bit with the necklace. Or maybe bling and a black tee with the gold buttons. Now I want the jacket. And a plaid shirt. How is it not a statement by the way?

    Nice gilet.

  • replied 7 years ago

I agree with Muffin: you are an inspiration! :-)
I'm not sure how you feel in outfit 3, but It is a great combination.

  • KikiG replied 7 years ago

    Loving it with the gilet!

  • lady replied 7 years ago

Wow, I like each of these looks!
    The red booties are awesome.
You look so put together. Im inspired.

Wow !amazing and lovely dress for winter...... boutiqueken

  • kkards replied 7 years ago

unexpectedly my fav is the last one with the pink blazer!  the red and the pink together take the plaid out of the preppy zone and into the WOW aone!

  • Suz replied 7 years ago

Aww, thanks everyone. I love the red and pink together. I might even wear it outside.

I still haven't figured out what to do about the jacket buttons. I'll start a thread about that. I agree, Liz, they are not too bad after all in the gold...but they're going to fight with too much of my other stuff so in the long run I think I'd like to replace.

Re maximalism -- I have a bit of a problem with it, as you see -- belt, necklace, buttons, earrings, watch, ring are all too much on little me. So I'll have to pick and choose. Will be asking for styling help soon (ish).

  • Suz replied 7 years ago

ETA, one thing I will say -- silvery hair makes any print with white a slam-dunk choice. Including plaid.

  • Bonnie replied 7 years ago

You look great in all three versions!!!

  • Mirjana replied 7 years ago

I love how you wear plaid shirt all are great, my favorite are #1 and #3.

  • approprio replied 7 years ago

Interesting observation. Now I'm wondering what makes a look maximal. Does it need a lot of accessories? Or just a couple of bold contrasting statements side by side? How can a plaid shirt and red boots suddenly redeem the gold buttons? Is it the unlikely suggestion of a glam grunge yacht club?

I'll save the button lab for the next thread, and I certainly won't advocate keeping them if gold isn't your thing. But I suspect that jacket demands statement buttons, which would also be accessories in themselves. Something to ponder.

Do we need a thread on maximalism? Or did we have one and I missed it?

  • rachylou replied 7 years ago

    I bow down to #2 :D

  • Beth Ann replied 7 years ago

So happy!  This is plaid at it's best -- worn with a little bit of the "Lady" alongside the Lumberjack!  I like all 3 version.  I should add that I think a plaid jacket is great for travel.  It can double as a casual "topper," doesn't show dirt, and doesn't muss badly.

  • texstyle replied 7 years ago

Love that plaid - and the vest looks great with everything I think! I agree with the use of white or very light colors in patterns when your hair is light - it really does seem to add a nice element to the outfit.

  • lpr200 replied 7 years ago

I'm SO glad yo kept the pink blazer, though all the outfits are homeruns!! I was jet debating if I should keep or get rid of my Rails flannels, but your style is always so inspiring! Maybe I'll play with them a bit.

  • Joy replied 7 years ago

Wow, you make me want to run to the closet and find a plaid shirt! I am wearing a black snd ehite check buttondown with black jeans and black furry vest. Most of the time the vest is too warm.

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 7 years ago

Nicely done! You wear plaid so stylishly, and you make it pretty. It's amazing how that long vest just sends an already great outfit into the style stratosphere!

  • TraceyLiz65 replied 7 years ago

Yes, all three work very well.  So fun too see you rocking the red booties!

  • Dee replied 7 years ago

These are all killer! I love that you even make plaid look dressy here. And those red boots are such a great statement pair.

  • peacechick replied 7 years ago

Wonderful demonstration of how to dress up or down a plaid shirt! Does that pink blazer look everything look good or what?

  • Angie replied 7 years ago

Killer all round, Suz. Maximal Fabness. You got red boots and kept the pink blazer! LOVE. A lot happens when you're away from the forum for 10 days.....

  • Sara L. replied 7 years ago

Oh, I love the plaid shirt worn with the blingy necklace.  That's something I would do.  I'm surprised how much I like the pink jacket over the red plaid, normally pink and red is a color combination that I don't really like.

  • Mochi replied 7 years ago

Wow. Love all these looks. I cannot for the life of me look feminine and sophisticated in a plaid shirt. You on the other hand look so polished, cool and chic.

  • JAileen replied 7 years ago

Suz, I have that very shirt. I mostly wear it very casually. You take it to another level!

  • UmmLila (Lisa) replied 7 years ago

I have one plaid shirt. Even though it's a black and white check I always feel more tomboy nerd than sophisticate in it. You are winning the plaid sophisticate game.

  • Julie replied 7 years ago

Hi Suz...I know you are a fellow Canadian, so i wanted to ask about the booties..the website says shipping to US only...did you have yours shipped to Canada?

  • Inge replied 7 years ago

I am completely blown away by all three outfits, Suz. WOW, are you on a roll or what!!!
And those red booties, the NAS gilet AND the pink J.Crew blazer were such good purchases!! All three have enormous remix potential, and you, fab lady, are a remixing master (I am taking notes :-)

  • Suz replied 7 years ago

Julie, I actually got mine from The Bay on sale. The Bay often carries Topshop.

Thank you all for the kind words. I feel like I need them today.  :)

Inge, you are making me blush! :)

Lisa, I sometimes feel a bit too tomboy in a plaid shirt, too, so I do have to do something to make it feel more feminine. I normally wouldn't wear the bling and it does feel like a bit much for a work at home day. But hey. Gotta try the maximal.

JAileen, Angie used to have this shirt, too (and may still) and Sveta also has it! We're quadruplets.

Angie, super sweet of you to stop by when you must be jet lagged! And yes, I got red boots and kept the pink jacket. I do want to change up the buttons eventually but I've already worn it twice so I guess it's going to be a workhorse. Once I scrunched the sleeves it felt a lot more "me."

  • Angie replied 7 years ago

    There you go. SORTED.

  • Anna replied 7 years ago

I would follow you down the street to get a better look at your outfits. Really hits the mark!

  • lyn67 replied 7 years ago

    Love them all!

I do have a similar "softened look" of a bl&w plaid shirt worn  with a waxed ink denim skirt, so think here the culotte makes for a more feminine look and is  not at all that androgynous like with any other pant1s style-&love it with the bib necklace, the red booties and the pink blazer, wow!!!

  • unfrumped replied 7 years ago

    Live the plaid shirt looks!
The bits of bright white in it are what does it for me. Really gives a nice pop and is very " enlivening" and maybe aides the dressier vibe. Plus, the bling is inspired.

  • Tanya replied 7 years ago

Love all of these, Suz, you totally nailed them.  Your new red booties are gorgeous are I love that kept the pink J.Crew jacket.  If you need more bright plaids in your life, this one has just followed me home :)

  • Angie replied 7 years ago

(I don't have this plaid shirt - Inge does).

Here are my current plaid shirts:

  • Ledonna N. replied 7 years ago

All I could say to myself with 2 was pow pow pow.

    Love that whole look.

    I don't know why I just do.

  • Style Fan replied 7 years ago

I love it all.  Now I am rethinking my decision to not pack my plaid shirt for Montreal.  Hmmm.  I thought it was a bit too lumberjack for such a chic city.
I love the different combos.  I can see that the gold buttons might be a problem when you are wearing certain things.  I never worry about mixing metals but they are very prominent.

  • Gigi replied 7 years ago

Really great looks, Suz! I especially like the plaid shirt with the pink blazer.

  • Lisa replied 7 years ago

What a fun shirt!  And I really like the pairing of the flare crops with those close to the leg ankle (?) height booties.

  • motherofms replied 7 years ago
