How I Wear Grey

What a gorgeous model in today's blog post! Inspiring to those of us with grey, silver, salt and pepper, and white hair. Thank you, Angie!

I'm extremely cool toned, so cool toned greys from charcoal to slate to pearl grey have always worked well on me, even when my hair was blonde. Now that my hair is grey, I choose grey as a neutral more and more. But, as I mentioned in the blog comments, I would feel dull and washed out in an outfit that was all grey, even the most flattering shade. I need to enliven grey with red or fuchsia or white or silver or blues (or some combination of those) to feel like myself.

And I am wary of buying grey coats. I actually own three (one mixed media with black leather sleeves; one slate grey puffer, one "Snow Queen" dressy coat) but for the same reasons Angie describes, I get very depressed by wearing them too much and have to alternate with other coats and/or wear with bright accessories or I feel miserable!

A couple of recent outfits featuring greys...

Well, you knock wearing grey right out of the ball park.  You really know how to make it work for you... Gorgeous, every one of them.

  • Helena replied 5 years ago

You do indeed look fabulous in gray! White perks it up so nicely, as does black when the gray is clean and light. Of course your reds look terrific.

  • anchie replied 5 years ago

You have obviously found your grey. I love all these looks but somehow my favorite is #2.
Every time I see how great you look with your short hair I start thinking of cutting mine. This is how I looked when I first went grey. I am obsessed with the hair at the moment as you can tell;)

Suz, you really rock gray in these combinations! I especially love the colors in the last outfit on you; the chambray blue, with white and light gray really bring out your eyes and make your hair shine.

  • Mirjana replied 5 years ago

Suz, you really wear gray on the best way. Love, love all outfits.

  • Sara L. replied 5 years ago

You look great in grey.  I really like how it complements your hair.

  • nemosmom replied 5 years ago

Wow! Stunning! You really rock the grey. It's a beautiful neutral on you and the snow queen coat is dazzling!

  • Canada replied 5 years ago

So enjoy your posts, Suz. And I can chime in about wearing bright colors. I share the exact philosophy. That snow Queen coat...stunning!!!! Anchie, from what I can see that haircut was ever so flattering...do it again.

  • shiny replied 5 years ago

That snow queen coat is amazing!

I wear grey very similarly. Pairs well with denim and black and a pop of color like red. And always seems to need a touch of white somewhere. Light grey is fine. Charcoal grey ... well I only have one item left in that, a Theory blazer.

And thinking about the few remaining grey pieces I have in my closet, my favorites have one thing in common: shine. I.e., I have a cardigan with leather pockets, a silver sparkle top, a mid-toned grey puffer, another knit top that has texture that appears to shimmer.

Your hair is beautiful and you know how to wear gray. I here you on grey coats. I only have 2 and both have a metallic cast...a darker grey EF trench that is a bit steel metallic and a shiny puffer jacket that loves more silver than grey. A grey wool coat would seem dead-looking. I do not even wear grey cardigans much although thought they would be workhorses. Now I know why.
The photo is of today’s outfit with the black and grey plaid Kut Donna jeans from NAS and lots of other greys. On top is a color block poncho in black and greys over a long sleeved tee also color blocked black and greys. Booties are a blueish charcoal suede and bag is a pale grey. I keep wanting to add my silver metallic scarf.

That Snow Queen coat should be mine.  It is SO cool.  I always enjoy reading your posts as you show how good a handle you have on what works and why (or why not).  Do you ever get it wrong ?  Although my hair isn't grey, I'm with you on grey coats. I've had a few over the years, and found they were a better idea than reality.  You are also reminding me to get out my long grey cozy GAP sweater and wear it . What label/line is yours from?

  • Suz replied 5 years ago

Shiny, I agree that shine works especially well with grey. Either silver or gold can work. Or even rose gold. I go for silver myself but I've seen it paired with the others and it can look amazing.

Thanks, Canada. The Snow Queen coat was a terrific consignment find.

Nemosmom, Sara, Mirjana, Elizabeth, TG, Firecracker -- thanks!

Anchie, I happen to think your current hairstyle is fantastic on you, and not everyone can wear their grey hair longer, so I have a special love for it. But if you are tired of your hair or thinking that a cut would get rid of most of the yellow, then go for it! :)  You would look terrific with short hair too.

The Grey Queen! I love all of these, but that snow queen ensemble is TDF! I love grey but it doesn't love me. I'm cool skinned/eyed, but warm hair and just can't seem to find one I like. I had to vow to stop buy-in not long after I started here because I learned that while I love it as a color, wearing it does not make me feel fab.

  • LaPed replied 5 years ago

Phenomenal, Suz! I love the mix of greys and silvers in #3 and #5.

  • rachylou replied 5 years ago

You do get grey to look lively! I’m thinking it’s at least partly due to having good structure in your outfits. I’m recalling a light grey sweater I had that lost my favour... I think it’s because as time wore on, it wasn’t really the colour but that it got flabby and saggy...

  • shiny replied 5 years ago

Suz, what I meant was that the garment itself has some shine to it. Like your snow queen coat and Anchie's metallic top on the other thread.

  • Gigi replied 5 years ago

Funny...I love gray but really dislike gray coats! I guess I'm in good company.

Great ouffits, as usual. :) I really love the metallic pieces--they really make the outfit come alive. And the Snow Queen coat...wow.

I find gray soothing sometimes. I can feel that black is too stark, so I'll reach for gray instead. One of my favorite outfit color combos is gray and black, but I do like to add a dash of red in there to liven it up.

  • Cardiff girl replied 5 years ago

None of your greys are boring, you have pattern or texture as well as mixing them with other colours to give them a lift and of course they complement your hair so well.

  • krishnidoux replied 5 years ago

Outfit #3 is too amazing. What a great way to personalize this very fortunate find.
Fisrt outfit is also very appealing: fresh, crisp, contrasting. I want to copy!

  • Style Fan replied 5 years ago

I like the way you mix the grey with other colours.  I think an all grey outfit might be hard to carry off.  Different textures help.

  • Suz replied 5 years ago

Style Fan, Cardiff Girl -- you are so right -- as with black, varying the textures makes a huge difference. Good point. Joy illustrates that, also.

Krishnadoux, thank you! It was such a fun find. And you would look great in a version of #1.

Interesting, Gigi! You also live in a place with a harsh winter climate, right? I do think a grey sky, grey lake (or ocean), grey clouds, grey buildings make wearing a grey coat worse. I feel like Winston Smith in 1984.

Ah, now I understand, Shiny. Good point.

Rachylou, that is a good observation. I have an asymmetrical Eileen Fisher merino sweater. I do wear it, but to be honest, I find it harder to wear than other grey pieces, because it seems to lack that structured feel.

    Thanks, LaPed

Karen, grey does seem to be quite hard for some people to wear. I remember my dad looking good in it. My mother didn't until her own hair greyed, and then she did.

Lisa, I definitely get it wrong! I'm getting better at getting rid of items that don't work before I cut tags, though. The sweater is from a local chain (does that make sense?) called Plenty. https://www.getplenty.com
I bought it in the spring when I was visiting Vancouver and (obviously!!) wore it a TON. It wasn't an expensive item. I like the slits. They make it move more easily than many others I tried on. But it's not super high quality and I would give it another year at most.

Joy, you look amazing in that outfit! So sophisticated and soignée!!

  • JAileen replied 5 years ago

Suz, you have an enviable sense of style. You look wonderful in these. Please post more WIWs so I can continue copying you! :)

  • Jaime replied 5 years ago

The crushed velvet grey top is just perfect on you. Since your skintone is cool I think silver grey is a slam dunk for you. You look like royalty in the Snow Queen coat - as in it should have taken a personal staff to find such a perfect coat for you :) !

  • Katerina replied 5 years ago

Suz, you are brilliant. I love how you wear grey. Don’t know what to add, simply beautiful.

  • Angie replied 5 years ago

I LOVE THE WAY YOU WEAR GREY and YOU WEAR IT WITH THE BEST OF THEM.

These outfits are absolutely KILLER on you.

The shine and contrast here are key, thereby adding life and personality to what could be a dull neutral that does not make you happy. You style your grey this way to perfection, sweet Suz. You are a grey-wearing inspiration.

  • kkards replied 5 years ago

    you make grey look happy....
and #3 looks like you stepped out of a magaizine! FAB

  • Aquamarine replied 5 years ago

Fantastic outfits on you! You’ve really figured out how to work with your grey hair. It’s been so interesting watching you navigate the change. I learn so much from you!

  • lyn67 replied 5 years ago

Love your use of greys, Suz&that coat is gorgeous!! I pair my greys to my black essentials in fall, add more  cream/shine/silver/metallics through holidays,  add/slowly replacing them to whites for early  spring till grey totally  dissaperes and makes place for bright whites/and blacks in summer.

  • Minah Lynn replied 5 years ago

Gray is definitely a phenomenal and one of my favorite colors ever! You rock in picture 2! It's so basic yet so attractive.

  • RobinF replied 5 years ago

You really look wonderful in gray. I love that velvet top and the long cardigan.

  • Janet replied 5 years ago

You wear it well! Especially with your "new" hair. The snow queen coat is so fabulous on you.

  • Christina F. replied 5 years ago

You truly knock it out of the park in grey. I'm in awe and it's hard to pick a favorite, although the dressy look is just wonderful.

  • Runcarla replied 5 years ago
