In which I break my vow

When I read this blog post, on Friday, apart from a pair of pajamas, I did not own a single item in soft pink. Or any kind of pink.

Why? Not because I dislike pink. Cool and even neutral pinks flatter my skin tone, and over the years, I've bought pink top after pink top after pink top.

Only to avoid wearing them!

Somehow, pink items always end up feeling too sweet for my taste. I put them on, and then take them off in favour of something else.

Tired of wasting money, three years ago I absolutely swore off all pink except for PJs, undies, and loungewear.

Until Saturday's shopathon, that is.

More on the amazing Seattle gathering later, but for context, I was absolutely in the market for a cropped and fairly fitted denim jacket to replace one of my earliest YLF purchases that had finally given up the ghost after 14 years.

We'd tried a number of options in the adult sections of different stores without success. Then I reminded Angie that I'd got a previous white denim jacket in the kids' section of Old Navy. (A detail she remembered, by the way. She has a memory for people's wardrobes like you would not believe.)

Anyway, while at the Gap, we headed to the kids' section. There, I found my blue denim jacket! Better yet, it cost less than a third of the price of the cheapest adult option we had seen.

I also wanted a white version, which they did not have. But -- you guessed it -- they did have a soft pink number. If I'd been shopping on my own, I'd have walked right past it. In fact, I did walk right past it without even seeing it!

But when the lovely Nuancedream pointed it out and encouraged me to give it a try, I couldn't say no. Meanwhile, the patient Firecracker and Angie held my stuff and offered opinions.

What can I say? Gap had a Buy one, get one half price deal going on. that day. It seemed like a sign.

I have owned this jacket now for four days and have already worn it three times. So much for not wearing pink!

What makes it work for me? Angie's trick of pairing it with something high contrast, for starters. Also, this jacket is a slightly "dirty" colour -- a greyed out pastel, rather than one mixed with a lot of white. Normally, I prefer clearer, less muted colours, but here, the grey takes some of the sweetness away from the pastel and makes it feel easier (to me!) to wear.

More on the other items and our amazing fun get together  in a later post!

Oh my, the pink jacket looks so perfect combine together with the grey stripes and white crops. Love that you could source your new jackets in the kid's section of the Gap. So wonderful that you've finally found your pink.
Can't wait to hear more tales on the Fab anniversary gathering.

That jacket is magic! It looked even more stunning on you in person than it does in your photo. Definitely a never-say-never purchase. <3

Great color! Going to tell my daughter. She’s been looking for a pink denim jacket, and at 5’ has good luck in kid sizes for *some* items.

  • Debbie replied 3 weeks ago

Great color on you and a great reminder that the styling maters. I love this jacket.

  • Suz replied 3 weeks ago

Styling definitely matters, Debbie. I'm also going to try the pink with red, too, as Angie suggests.

Aquamarine, your daughter may indeed get lucky.  For reference, I had to size DOWN in this jacket -- normallylI could fit an XXL kids, but had to take the XL. (I'm 5'4". And my weight/ fluff is higher than typical due to three months of little exercise on account of my injury.).

It's just a tiny bit oversized with round shoulders. She might find the sleeves short. They are short on me but I always scrunch them anyway, so it's irrelevant.

Thanks, K. I am blushing as pink as the jacket.

Thanks, Dee! I can see you in this colour, too!

I really like that shade of pink.  It looks a bit like North Face’s current pink called Metal Pink.  I tried to find your jacket but couldn’t, because I had skipped the details, i.e., children’s section!  Hahaha!  You look great in it, and great outfit, too.

  • Lisa replied 3 weeks ago

You are killing it with jackets, first the cropped trench with hood and now this pink denim darling! The fit and color could not be more perfect, and how fun you had YLFers helping you shop for it!

  • Jaime replied 3 weeks ago

Excellent story Suz! And isn't it funny that this more sophisticated pink shade was found in the children's section? You look fantastic and no one would ever guess where you found this jacket. Eagerly awaiting more tales from the big day!

  • Karie replied 3 weeks ago

I love pink and wear it a lot. The jacket looks great on you!

  • Aquamarine replied 3 weeks ago

Thanks Suz, will pass it along.

  • Kyle replied 3 weeks ago

Yes, I think this will look smashing with red and burgundy, but also with your wonderful blues and, as we see here, white!  It really suits you.

  • Angie replied 3 weeks ago

KILLER WILDCARD, Suz!! Thanks for taking us back to the Gap, where we had SOOO MUCH fun!! Thanks for the kind words too. Nuancedream's stroke of pastel genius finding that kid's jacket is to be highly commended :)

The lilac-y tone of the pink helps too (plus the greyed effect, as you mentioned). So do the BIG silver buttons that work beautifully with your hair and new loafers!! AND wearing it with whites and high contrast.

KILLER to the Power of KILLER pink jacket - leave no retail stone unturned ;) - and beautifully styled here. Thanks for keeping an open mind!

    NEW WARDROBE ESSENTIAL.

Proof of you trying the jacket at the Gap! With your new KILLER Japanese denim Levi's jeans we got the day before ;)

It is fabulous. I want one and I am also not that into pink on myself. However I call this dusty pink and although if it is muted, something that is normally not me, it works. Looks like you have found your pink!

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 3 weeks ago

It looks terrific on you, Suz! I didn't know you had sworn off pink. I think this one is worth breaking the vow. It was so much fun shopping with you. I would never have ventured into the kids' section of Gap! Now I know.

  • Carla replied 3 weeks ago

Totally agree on how a little grey can knock down the sweetness of a pastel and make it so much more wearable.

  • Suz replied 3 weeks ago

JAileen, I was thinking of you when I wrote this post because I know you wear this type of pink really well and our hair is similarly coloured.

Thanks, Lisa. And Jaime, yes, the irony was not lost on me! Karie, you are one who looks FAB in pink, including pink hair! You make it look cool, not overly sweet. Kyle, thank you! You would suit this, too.

Angie, yes -- wildcard workhorse, that elusive and always welcome beast! Thanks for posting the photo - it's great!

Star, you made me laugh! Now everyone will be searching out kids' departments everywhere...

Sharan, thanks again for holding my stuff and helping me decide!

Carla, thanks! I can see how it could work with lilacs, too...maybe your raincoat is similar, in a way....

  • slim cat replied 3 weeks ago

Gorgeous! Love pale pink on you - it was meant to be yours!

  • Sal replied 3 weeks ago

You look great Suz and this is a perfect wildcard. Undertones make a huge difference in the pastel shades I find - this pink would not be good for me……

I look forward to seeing your other purchases.

  • kkards replied 3 weeks ago

Wait, lol all I see is the silver/metallic shoes.

  • kkards replied 3 weeks ago

The pink jacket is actually fab. Love the dusty pink!

  • MidwestrnChic replied 3 weeks ago

I have never considered wearing a pink denim jacket, but now I feel I need to have this!  Spectacular Suz! Now I must have the details on those Levis. You are killing it!

  • RobinF replied 3 weeks ago

Awesome! I quite like pink but agree it can come across as too sweet. This looks like a great find!

  • LJP replied 3 weeks ago

Now I want one too !  This is SUCH a great colour for you, and not at all sweet and twee.  Love it.   I really miss the Gap .  Also love the silver loafers which look very new too ;).

  • kellygirl replied 3 weeks ago

Love this! What a great find. That shade of pink really suits you and what a work horse it will be!

  • Suz replied 3 weeks ago

Thanks, Kelly -- I think it will be a workhorse!

Lisa, kkards, more on the silver shoes coming up soon!

    Robin, thanks!

    Midwesternchic -- thank you!

Sal, you are so right -- a clearer colour would work much better for you. Oddly, that is usually true for me as well -- but in this case, the "dusty" made the pink feel less...pink?

Slim cat -- thanks - and so sorry I missed meeting you!

  • slim cat replied 3 weeks ago

I hope there will be another fab meeting in Seattle in some future ( hopefully sooner than 5 years - lol )!

  • lyn67 replied 3 weeks ago

This is exactly the shade of blush I also like! YLF Suz in both outfits!!!

  • nuancedream replied 3 weeks ago

It was serendipity that I spied that dusty pink Gap jacket in the children's section. Suz, you were born to wear it! That shade of pink makes you glow even more than you already do.

  • Joyce replied 3 weeks ago

Had to have that pink jacket with the fab silver buttons, jetting my way.
I have the same shade of hoodie on order from Old Navy. It is the best shade and it looks fab on you. Now I know how to wear my striped t-shirts, thanks for the inspo.

  • Inge replied 3 weeks ago

So glad Nuancedream spotted this jacket for you, Suz. The dusty lilac-y pink looks amazing with your hair and complexion, and the fit is so good! Love it that you've already worn it lots!

It was such a treat spending time with you, I hope we can do it again soon!

Joyce - fun that you and Suz can be jacket twins:-)

  • Nadine replied 3 weeks ago

Love it! It looks great with the stripes and silver shoes.

  • texstyle replied 3 weeks ago

Looks really fantastic on you Suz - what a great pick!

  • The Cat replied 3 weeks ago

Your outfit with the greyed pink jacket looks sophisticated. Lovely colour for your colouring.

I, too, like clearer versions of most colours. But I have a few items in muted/greyed pink like yours and enjoy wearing them. Muted pink somehow feels more "adult" than several other pinks and looks great teamed with many other cool colours. How fun that you found it in the kids' department!

  • Suz replied 3 weeks ago

The Cat, you explain it well. There is a more sophisticated feel to this tone.

Texstyle, Nadine, Inge -- thank you! Joyce, so glad we might be twins! That is fun.

    Guess what? I lied.

Not intentionally. But I realized I do have one other pink item. And I do wear it! Mostly in the early autumn and early spring. It is a cotton sweater from Ann Taylor.

In this case, it's a brighter pink, with red and burgundy mixed through. For some reason the combo works better fo rme than straight pink. This sweater does skew a bit sweet for my taste but I love how vivid it is, and it's a nice cotton knit, and it works well with burgundy and light blue or with reds. So. Maybe another pink solution (for me) is to mix with red and/or burgundy.)

  • Dana replied 3 weeks ago

So cute, Suz! I totally know what you mean about pink feeling too sweet. (which your new one doesn't esp with your styling.) I keep thinking I want a pair of pink pants but I never pull the trigger. I like your new jacket with the stripes, super dynamic! I can see it with grey and silver too!

  • SarahD8 replied 3 weeks ago

Wow, this is fantastic on you!

I know very well that struggle not to feel too "sweet" in pastels that are objectively flattering on me. A chameleonlike version (is it pink? is it lavender? is it gray?) can be just the thing. I am taking notes!

  • Brooklyn replied 3 weeks ago

    Looks soooo good on you!
