Introducing the China/Vancouver Trip Capsule!

Those of you who have lived through some of my previous travel preparations will know that a). the prospect of a trip sends me into a panic, and b). the panic is largely wardrobe related!

Well, thanks to Angie and the collective wisdom of YLF I feel as if I'm in much better shape for my trip to China and Vancouver than I've been for any of my previous trips and I don't even need to post any "what to wear" questions.

In truth, I'd love to show you some of my outfits (and see them myself through the camera's eye) but there just isn't time. So I'll hope to get pics from the road and I guess I'll learn what needs improvement that way.

In the meantime, this is a VERY challenging trip to pack for because we'll experience a wide variety of climate conditions, (everything from below freezing to 30 degrees C, potentially). We can only take one bag plus a small carry on each, and we will be away for a long time AND doing a variety of activities.

Even so, I'm feeling relatively good about what I'm bringing and confident it will carry me through.

For this trip, I took the wise advice of some of our members and wrote down each ACTIVITY that I know I will be doing. I then came up with a potential outfit for that activity for two temperature ranges.

Obviously, layers are key to this, and that's the mainstay. So I need a lot of mix and match possibilities. Fortunately, my closet is finally becoming more integrated and it has been easier to come up with those options than in the past. (Thanks YLF!)

The main issue is footwear. I need a lot of different kinds! So that takes up room in the suitcase.

Here's a sampling of what's going in the bag. Will it all fit? Stay tuned to find out!

Some YLF items of note:

The MaryK wonder scarf (yay scarf twin!)
The Portobello skirt (waving to Shannon, skirt twinnie!)
The waxed denim moto (waving to Ariadne!!)
The Ann Taylor silk leopard shirt (waving to Shiny, Ann, and Vix!!)
The DV booties will be on my feet (waving to Una!)
The Brooks Brothers white shirt (waving to Angie...oh, and I have a story to share about that eventually, too!)

    How exciting, Suz!
Footwear definitely presents a challenge. Cannot wait to see how this continuing saga plays out ...

  • krishnidoux replied 11 years ago

What a great selection you've got there!
I must admit, visiting all these places in one trip is challenging in terms of what to bring. But I think you are well prepared. Love your cat!

  • deb replied 11 years ago

I think the cast thinks she/he will be in the suitcase also.

  • Jaime replied 11 years ago

This is so exciting! It sounds like you are on top of your packing and I see your cat is!

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

Max is getting nervous....poor sweet kitty.

But we have a friend living in the house when we are gone so he will be well taken care of.

  • Glory replied 11 years ago

Looks like a great capsule. Agree that the footwear and the various weather will be a challenge. Excited to see how it all comes together

  • krishnidoux replied 11 years ago

Remember that in Vanc it is quite windy in the Fall. And rainy (of course). Sometimes rain non-stop for days. Bring a cute folding umbrella to match your capsule.

  • Mona replied 11 years ago

Oh Suz, this sounds like such a fun filled trip and I know what you mean by " I'm feeling relatively good about what I'm bringing and confident it will carry me through".
I am ready to take this capsule and run with it. Looks so coherent and colourful. I can't wait to see you in these outfits. Do keep us posted.

  • Krista replied 11 years ago

This looks great, Suz! I can see lots of possibilities here for mixing and matching. Looking forward to seeing and hearing more as your trip gets closer :)

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

    Love what I see!

And my predictable question is: will you be warm enough - where is the outerwear?

What are you packing for footwear?

    Hi Max :)

  • JulieJohn replied 11 years ago

Fantastic looking stuff. Max is looking fab in cream and taupe. He seems to approve of your selections.

I think I see a scarf amongst your things, which could do triple duty as a belt, a shoulder shawl with a dressy outfit, and a neck warmer when things turn chilly.

Thanks for sharing these? What are some of the activities you will be doing? When is your trip?

  • replied 11 years ago

I will be following your updates with interest, packing pro!

Pretty Max wants to go too!

  • Ariadne replied 11 years ago

Wow, what a packing challenge. When do you leave? Hope you've got good rainwear--the rainy season kicked off here with absolute downpours this week (I know you know all about that, of course!).

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

    Thank you, everyone!

Angie, I hope I'll be warm enough. I have LOTS of layers including a wool turtleneck that goes over top of other layers easily and still fits under a jacket. And the outerwear is a trench coat and a rainproof gear-type anorak for casual (or torrentially rainy) days. I also have an umbrella. And gloves. And scarves. It's possible Vancouver will still be chilly for me, but it's the best I can manage. Friends will probably loan me something there if I get desperate.

Footwear. The question is, what DON'T I have?

    1. DV heeled booties {won't be worn much in China, but will come out to play constantly in Vancouver).

    2. Josef Siebel lower heeled booties (will wear constantly wherever, as long as it is cool enough - these are all day walking shoes for me.

    3. plain black pointy toed "flats." (a teeny tiny wedge to them to make them more comfy for me) - to wear on hot days in Shanghai in the city, walking.

    4. Ecco Mary Janes with an athletic footbed, to wear walking everywhere if it is warm, especially if wearing a skirt

    5. black leather Ecco athletic shoes (look sort of like cons) for wearing on hikes with pants (and for exercise).

Activities to include (but not limited to):

All the usual sightseeing in Beijing: Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Great Wall, a hutong bicycle trip, visits with friends there, lots of eating, art district. Maybe the opera?

Ditto Shanghai - plus some shopping, I hope!

Hangzhou - visit to my daughter's orphanage. Plus tea plantation and other stuff.

Vancouver: Visits with friends, walks, meals out, more walks, some shopping.

Oh - and I leave tomorrow!

  • replied 11 years ago

Safe travels! What an exciting trip. Can't wait to read all about it.

  • Ingunn replied 11 years ago

Safe travels, Suz! Your capsule looks very promising, and I'm sure you will find everything suitable as planned. Say hello to China from me - my mother was born there by Norwegian missionaries during WW2. I long to travel to China myself, but the time hasn't been right yet. So long, take care!

  • replied 11 years ago

Do you have anything like this with you. It can be very useful at times.

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

vshp - you always make the BEST suggestions!

I don't have such a thing (it is lovely looking!) but I do have a trench coat, so should be good.

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

You are sorted pretty and organized lovely lady :)

  • replied 11 years ago

Suz, thank you for your compliment, made me blush :)
I recommend that jacket for u because it's really lightweight !
Make sure you bring some diarrhea pill for China trip. Just in case :)
Be safe and have an unforgettable trip ! ( don't keep your money in your purse, keep it in your pant pocket. Safety pin will help you to secure the content )

  • bj1111 replied 11 years ago

is max going in the carry on or is he going to be checked?

    when are you leaving?

  • Sveta replied 11 years ago

Looks like you are all sorted out for your trip, Suz. Have a great and safe one and post some pictures from China for us!

  • Joy replied 11 years ago

No advice except maybe silk long undies as a barrier for cold. You and Max look ready to go.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

You have really thought this out incredibly well Suz - connecting your clothing items to your activities is brilliant. Your footwear sounds like every contingency is covered. I'm so excited for you - when do you leave?

BTW - I'd be checking my luggage to make sure Max hasn't snuck in!

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

Joy, the silk undies are in the bag!! ;-)

I leave first thing tomorrow! And I am all packed and also have daughter all packed!

And I feel perfectly prepared (clothing wise). Thanks, YLF!!

  • celia replied 11 years ago

    So many pretty clothes :)
Footwear id always complicated but you are a pro now in this sort of things.
Hope you have a great journey.

  • Parsley replied 11 years ago

it sounds like you have a very well thought-out travel capsule, Suz.
No suggestions, just wanted to wish you a wonderful trip!
We'll be eager to hear all about it when you get back.

  • Deborah replied 11 years ago

Suz you look so organised. No advice just want to wish you a wonderful trip. How long are you away for and will you be able to check in?

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

I am out of Canada for just over two weeks and in Vancouver for another week after that. I will indeed check in as I can! I hope with photos of the trip!

  • anne replied 11 years ago

Suz, I hope you have a GREAT trip. You have thought this out very carefully and I am sure you will look fab!

  • Ornella replied 11 years ago

Amazing organizing skills. It will be very interesting to see the pieces in action.

Have a great trip, or trips, and looking fwd to see the photos of everything.

  • lyn* replied 11 years ago

I hope you have a lovely trip, Suz ... I am not going to the mainland this trip (improper travel documents, apparently ... *major eyeroll*) but I am sure your travel agency is a lot more competent than the travel agency of mom and dad (just kidding! LOVE THEM!)

It's super hot right now; like uber humid. Don't forget a sun parasol, or buy one here. I burned despite SPF 50 and sun parasol with sunglasses! :)

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

Oh, Lyn...too bad....it would have been SO cool to meet up with you!

I won't be as far south as you, only as far as Shanghai. So I am hoping it won't be as hot!

  • lyn* replied 11 years ago

My godfather just came back from Shanghai, he says it is unseasonally hot this year, but reminds you to bring a light jacket in the mornings and the evenings. And scarves ('pay-gheen') are very popular too. I think he means the heavier pashmina type of scarves.

Have a lovely flight! I hope you're not flying coach... like me. :p

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

Have a safe and fabulous trip!! xoxo

  • Lisa replied 11 years ago

I hope you are having a great trip. I can't wait to see these outfits in action when you return.
