Kamalikulture dresses and Tiganello Taupe

Thanks to Momo I nabbed two Kamalikulture dresses for the price of one from Zullily (thanks, Momo). They arrived today and here they are.

I apologize again for the quality of these photos. I see I have cut off my feet and the angle is odd. Also, it is dark and dank again today so the light is poor.

1. Sleeveless bottle bottom dress. This one feels really nice on and DH loved it. It is quite body con, however, and a little bit dressier than I expected because of the ruching detail. (Sorry, I didn't get side and back photos of this one.)

2. Trying to casualize with denim jacket and flats. Does that work?

3. Trying to "falllify" with vintage black jacket and boots. Is that okay?

4. The turtleneck. This one is, if possible, even more body con, and I wish I had a bigger size. However, this was the only size available and it's not returnable as far as I know. So I will make do.

5. Trying to show how body con. Eeeps!

6. back view.

7/8. Trying to casualize it with denim. Does this take the va-va voom out? Va va voom is not my thing.

9/10: The new "mushroom" Tiganello shopper that I found at Winner's when I went in search of athletic socks. I figured this would be a useful colour for me to have, and it's a useful size and shape for me. Laptop fits inside it. I don't consider this "the" bag I have been searching for, but I do think it will earn its reasonable CPW.

Would love your thoughts. Are these two dresses too body con to wear? Fortunately they are super stretchy, so body con or not, they are super comfortable, and would be great travelling dresses, something I frequently need.

I think dress #1 is all kinds of fun and like all the ways you styled it.  I'm not so big on #2.  Could simply be personal preference/bias.  I don't care for the denim jacket competing with the deep blue in the print, either.  Maybe a black jacket for such a rich colored print?

  • Susie replied 10 years ago

I don't think the first one is overly body con at all, Suz. I think it looks great on you and I like both ways that you've styled it. WIth the second one, if it was low cut it would definitely be va-va-voom but the turtleneck style tempers the body con fit.

  • Lisa replied 10 years ago

I think both dresses fit nicely.  Yes you see some shape, but it doesn't look super tight all the way down the thighs (which is my deal breaker for how tight I go on a dress).  I actually like the slight curve you see with the side view, why not show off just a little.  It's still an elegant piece.

#1 works great with all the styles here.  Very versatile piece you have here. I also think #7 would work better with a darker wash denim jacket.  And pretty taupe bag, it looks like a real workhorse bag.

  • replied 10 years ago

I love the second one and I wish I could find it in my size!

I think these will be good for you, Suz.

  • Joy replied 10 years ago

I love the first dress especially and think you look great in both. I also wonder, if they are super stretchy, if they will become less form fitting as you wear them...like jeans do. You could even do what I've seen Stacy do on What Not To Wear and take the piece and yank it hard a few times to stretch it a bit...not that you need to.
The turtle neck dress's pattern and colors keep the look less bodycon to my eye. The eye keeps moving. I like it best with the white denim jacket but think it would also look great with the black jacket in #3. Don't you also have a cobalt topper?
The taupe bag is great. Most of my favorite bags for color and style have been Tiganello. They have also held up wonderfully.

  • CocoLion replied 10 years ago

Not too body con, you have the figure to pull them off!

Love your new bag, it goes perfectly with the Report Marks booties.

  • donnat replied 10 years ago

Both dresses look terrific on you. Not too body con. I really like both denim jackets with these dresses. My favorite dress is #2. The turtle neck takes the va-va-voom away.
Tiganello makes a nice bag. I have enjoyed a few of their bags in my life.

  • Eliza replied 10 years ago

Suz- You wear those dresses very well.   As to the va-voom factor, these don't read that way to me at all on you.  The high necklines and the lengths both keep it looking quite refined to my eye.  The body con factor in this case has a lot to do with your personal comfort zone, as you look great and can use toppers to change it up.

I am not so fond of the denim toppers with what I imagine the fabric of these dresses to be, but that could be because I still I have one foot in Frumpsville. I prefer a more structured jacket with them or perhaps that rare well-fabricated knit that would be a textural contrast, but still have some oomph. Do you have a white Danier jacket?  A shorter jacket might also be possibility to try with them.

Like the new bag and picture you getting a lot of wear out of it.  I could also see you using a bag that is somewhere in the deep raspberry, not quite oxblood color family with much of your wardrobe.

    Like the boots also.

  • unfrumped replied 10 years ago

#1 is just perfection--you had been worried about some patterns but this is just great, plus the perfect neutrals. Hmm, I see about the turtle. Really lovely colors with the black boots and white jacket, though. Bag color is great!

  • texstyle replied 10 years ago

The dresses both look really good on you - the patterns are bold, but you seem to be pulling that off and they look esp. nice with the jackets. They don't look overly body con but they are fitted so that's just a personal preference I think.

The taupe bag looks like a great neutral and nice size. The only thing I wonder is if it will disappear with all your great taupe clothes? :-) You have been doing a lot of black and navy too of course so maybe not an issue. I can't remember your coat colors.

  • Mona replied 10 years ago

The first one is perfect on you, Suz. I don't see any va-va-voom at all. Also, I think with your body shape hourglassy rectangle, you can get away with fairly body con. I especially like in its fall version.
I am not crazy about the second dress but that is just me. I think it is the print. Great find for a bag too.

  • Niefern replied 10 years ago

Those dresses are wonderful: feminine, flattering and seem very wearable.

The first one I had already seen and loved on Angie, the second one is super too, very modern and sharp looking.

    You look great in them!

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Thanks, all! Unfrumped, you are right, I am getting more picky about patterns, but these ones passed my filter.

Eliza, I do have a white Danier jacket but it is out getting its sleeves shortened at the moment so I could try it on! You're right that a raspberry bag would be fab for me. It wouldn't work with my red winter coat but it would work with a lot of other things really well, and I'd love to have one.

Donna, I'm glad to hear the Tiganello bags have worked well for you. I've heard they are nicely made and durable.

Denise, thank you! It IS a bit matchy matchy with the Reports, isn't it? I might not wear together but I wanted to show that they could work and just get a sense myself of the colour values.

Joy, I love your suggestion to give these dresses a yank! I actually did that a bit. :-) So far they popped right back but that might change. I'm probably right between sizes, actually. They look more body con in person. DH thought the turtleneck one did, especially. Not that he was opposed.

I do not have a cobalt topper (amazingly enough). Hmmm. Is that a new wardrobe hole?  :-)

Susie, the ruching on dress #1 is pretty helpful!

Mo, thank you! I agree that maybe the faded denim isn't such a great pair with dress 2. I wanted to see if it could potentially work, but I think it's not ideal.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

    Niefern, thank you!

Mona, thank you, too. I think the print and/ or neckline of dress 2 might be more divisive. I actually like the paintbrush print with the sharp angles.

Tex, thank you! You know what....apart from my taupe jacket, top, and sweater, I don't really have any taupe clothes! It just seems as if I do. (Well, to do have one skirt that I am probably about to purge due to fit issues.) My coats are black (raincoat); navy with black colorblock peacoat; dark cranberry red wool coat; and grey puffer.

This bag will not go well with all of those, but will be usable with most and I can also use it at other times of the year when not wearing an overcoat.

  • texstyle replied 10 years ago

I guess I just think of you as having a lot of taupe, but of course you're right, I remember each of the items you just listed and that's not many at all. And sometimes it is nice to have shoes/bag match just to make things easy. At least that's how I feel.

  • deb replied 10 years ago

You look great in these dresses! I think the bag is a nice neutral.

  • shedev replied 10 years ago

I like both dresses. The bag seems like it will be very versatile.

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

    Killer tote.

The frocks fit superbly well Suz. Not too body con at all.

For the life of me I cannot understand why my frocks are longer on me - and I am taller than you. I have the turtleneck dress - same fit different pattern - and it covers my knees. My other K dress too. Are yours petite?

I love my Kamalikulture dresses. They have been absolutely superb for Summer.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

I'm going to be no help to your budget Suz 'cause I love it ALL! I think both dresses look incredible on you and I don't see them as body con at least. They are more fitted than you normally wear, yes, but not body con. I think you look positively smashing.

I also think both patterns are very versatile and can work with a number of your toppers.

    The taupe tote is fab.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Angie, these dresses are regular in xs. I wish I got the small.

If you also have the xs, I think I know the reason. It's like with boots. A fuller calf will make the shaft height seem a bit shorter sometimes, correct?

Well....my frame (I think) and probably my overall size (weight, musculature, etc.) is bigger than yours. In other words, while technically about the same size, I am not as delicate as you. Sveta, who has met us both, confirmed this.

I'm shorter by a few inches, but my shoulders are probably a bit wider, and perhaps my other measurements are bigger, too. (Well, um, apart from my bust measurement that is.) So I think it just makes the whole thing sit a bit differently. Does that make any sense? So while we'd take the same or a similar size in most items, the fit would not be identical.

It could be that I am just longer in the body, too, although you'd think my short legs would mean the dress would still be longer on me! Although...perhaps not. My legs are actually average length for my size (not long or short) but my thighs might be a bit long whereas my calves are short (alas).

Thanks Shedev and Deb! Glad the tote seems practical -- I thought it would be a decent purchase for the not-high pricetag.

ETA thank you Shannon, sweet enabler!

  • nancylee replied 10 years ago

I love these dresses for you, Suz.  They are body con but not vavavoom by any stretch, and they will be super useful...especially for travel.  I love how you've styled them with the denim and white jackets.  Nice score on the tote, too!

Please keep the lot.  I have a couple of Lauren stretch dresses similar in style to these and find them invaluable for travel and casual dressing.

  • goldenpig replied 10 years ago

Killer dresses on you. They were made for your figure and style! I love the matchy matchy boots and tote too! :)
Those proportion issues are so weird, aren't they! But both you and Angie look great in the dresses.

  • Marley replied 10 years ago

I think that both of these are really pretty on you Suz!  Not too body-con - just a little form-fitting - which is nice for a change!  It looks like you must have ordered these in petites - did you consider getting the regular length?  Its probably too late now anyway, isn't it?  So - never mind!
When I first looked at the pics with the tote my first thought was that it looked too big for your frame - but then I realized that it's a tote - its supposed to be big - so, I'm a thumbs up with that one too!  My own personal preference would be to not wear the matching boots with the tote - just too much matchy-matchy taupe for me!

  • Debbie replied 10 years ago

Love both dresses and the tote. The dresses look like they could go anywhere and be dressed up or down successfully. To me that means it is a great dress!

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

I hear you , Marley. I probably would not wear them together, in fact. I just wanted to show that they are close in colour.

This thing is actually a "shopper." Shopper bags are tote sized for me, LOL. I actually look for them in lieu of totes because totes are just too big.

The dresses are not petite. They are regular. I wonder if there is a seam allowance to let down?

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

Both my dresses are XS. Your boot analagy makes sense. I am slight - but not that slight. So I measured the lengths just on the off chance that your dresses are literally shorter than mine:

crew neck: 41 inches from shoulder neck point

turtleneck: 40.5 inches, also from shoulder neck point.

    Your turn.

  • replied 10 years ago

Suz, what a wonderful haul! I love both of the dresses on you, and their colors will lend themselves to endless mixing and matching with toppers and footwear in your wardrobe. I really, really like the cut of the sleeveless one. SO flattering on you. Your Tig tote will serve you well. Enjoy O Capsule Queen. :)

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Well, Angie -- you got it! Both of mine are 39" long.

They are not labelled petite. Maybe Zulilly gets seconds? I wonder....

The length is okay for me anyway, I think. I hope!

  • Momo replied 10 years ago

The dresses look great on you! So glad they worked out!

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

Ah ha. The devil is in the detail. There you have it. My frocks ARE longer.

Lengths are great, Suz. Don't give it a second thought.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Isn't that funny, Angie? It's like they knew I was two inches shorter than you.  :-)

Thanks for reassuring me. I am so fond of midis now that I do feel a bit odd baring part of my knee. But they don't ride up terribly when I sit and they do stretch.

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

I know. Hilarious. Although mine are still knee-covering for the most part, which is part of the reason I love them.

There is room for this length, Suz. You look splendid. xo

  • cobaltblue replied 10 years ago

You blow me away with dress #1! I also love the print in #2 and think you'll wear it to rags once you figure out styling.

  • catgirl replied 10 years ago

If I'd looked like you in the one I tried I would have kept it! I totally understand about the bodycon feeling but it doesn't look that way at all. I especially love the first one.

  • MsMary replied 10 years ago

LOVE the dresses!  So fab on you!!  The tote is great, too!  I have a couple of Tigs and have found them to be really well made.

  • Debora replied 10 years ago

I love both these dresses on you! I tried the bottle bottoms dress several months ago, but it didn't work out for me. I'm so happy to be able to enjoy it on you and Angie. Your new bag is beautiful and will be a wardrobe workhorse for you.

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

Although I would have asked the same question, I do NOT think they are too body con. I love the first one with the white jacket especially. Great tote too. And very, very interesting how yours are shorter than Angie. That is one advantage of shopping in stores I guess.

  • Vickie KY replied 10 years ago

Gorgeous. The denim jacket does make it more casual looking. They both love wonderful on you and fit superb. Your figure is excellent so go for the va va voom.

You look fab in every picture, and I love the tote! Thanks for posting.

  • ManidipaM replied 10 years ago

I might have apoplexy if you don't hang to these! It took me ages to look beyond that first pic... I stared and stared and stared and sighed...

  • Janet replied 10 years ago

I'm late, but these look amazing on you!

I tried (and bought) one Kamalikulture dress too -- the blue reptile print faux-wrap style. They are great dresses. Can't wait to break out my sleeved dresses with cooler temps arriving!

  • kellygirl replied 10 years ago

Love the taupe shopper. It's going to be so useful for you! Love the dresses too. The fit is superb!

  • replied 10 years ago

I'm a bit late to this too. I was too shattered to comment last night :(
Suz, I love both frocks on you (ahh! I'm turning into my mum! she always says frock! ) Anyway, I think they look and fit beautifully and I like the different way you've styled them. I rather like the denim jacket version and I don't mine that it's another blue to add to the mix. I love the white denim version too. I think the new Taupe arm candy is fab! What great purchases.

  • Day Vies replied 10 years ago

I like both dresses just fine but my FAVORITE is the black and blue dress and I love it best alone and with the white jacket. I have to catch my breath! I'm ready to faint over here!

  • Beth Ann replied 10 years ago

I've had so little time for the forum this week, and I'm struggling to catch up.

Love these, particularly #1.  I think your whole presence counteracts the "vavavoom" in these -- you always look like a perfect lady (although your smile sometimes looks a little "ornery" as my Grandpa would say).  I'd love to see them with the Danier.

The "shopper" is a great find.  With your lifestyle have a fashionable bag to fit the laptop is crucial.

  • Deborah replied 10 years ago

These dresses were made for you Suz! They both look amazing:)

  • Jjsloane replied 10 years ago

I think they both look great, but only you know if you feel ok in them. Have you tried blazer from 3 and boots with the turtleneck dress?
