K/Pass on: H&M blouse

Hi, all -- hope you are all well!

I have been finishing up some work projects so have been quieter here of late. But today I am packing for a trip out west (Vancouver/ Victoria) and I have a question or two for you.

For review, this H&M blouse that I picked up on Style Exchange from Alaskagirl. I have had it since before my Israel trip, but only now got to take pics.

I was hoping this would fit into my appearances capsule for those times when I might want a bit of drama but might not want to wear a jacket.

The trouble is, I don't feel good about the fit. But I am wondering if it is my imagination. The shoulders are perfect and the sleeve length is excellent. (You can't see that here since I have scrunched, as is my wont.)

It's the body portion that feels off. It has princess seams so I think should be quite tailored. But on me, there is a ton of extra fabric in the sides, bust, back, under the arms. I don't know if the photos show this or not.

Anyway, Una mentioned that she felt it would have to be quite loose in the body to work, so that got me second guessing.

Mr. Suz thinks it is decidedly too big, for what it is worth. (In person opinion.)

Sorry for all the pics -- I was trying to get a good view. Also, it is wrinkled. I didn't iron it yet.

Would love to know what you think. If I can't keep it will be up on the Style exchange again. ;)

Hmm, I am not sure what to say. Something is bugging me about it, but can't tell if it is the sizing or it just might be a bit overwhelming. For all that it is worth, I tried the same shirt recently in my real size (more fitted in the bodice) and did not like it on me also for reasons I couldn't pinpoint.

  • carter replied 9 years ago

I vote pass on. It's a bit overwhelming on you. Beautiful color, though.

I think it fits really well in the shoulders, but it looks big around the waist. The color is fab on you. I'm not very fond of how the fabric bounces around your hips in an not too great way. Maybe a pair of skinnies/slim black pants could work. I'm sorry, Suz, but I vote pass on this one for you. I hope you don't mind me being so direct.

It's a beautiful top but I think I prefer drapey tops in more fluid fabrics.
A crisp fabric plus extra fabric look somewhat strict to me, but maybe it's just me.
The shoulders look good but the body may be a bit large on you.

I agree with Mr. Suz. The fit looks wrong everywhere accept the shoulder points. Back to Style Exchange it goes.

That said, I LOVE you in this shade of blue with black. Killer colour palette.

  • Angie replied 9 years ago

Ah. Tanya's version fits a lot better. It's mega pouffy though - which you have to be okay with.

  • Suz replied 9 years ago

Oh, Tanya, thank you so much for posting that -- yes -- THAT is the fit that would have worked better; this is wrong. Thanks all for your thoughts on this and I will be offering it up!

Thanks, Angie -- I agree about the colours. The skirt is ink, BTW, but the effect is definitely similar to pale blue and black (and the shoes are black). It would have been fun to wear for spring. But...onwards! :)

  • Angie replied 9 years ago

Ink can look sooooo black, can't it. I hope you find a fun light blue shirt that works.

  • Tanya replied 9 years ago

Suz, I am glad it helped. Ultimately, it was just a bit too much shirt for my comfort despite the fact the fit was right. I am sure you will find a different dramatic light blue shirt that works better.

  • unfrumped replied 9 years ago

I agree. The main thing is the bodice should be more fitted I you, gif the princess style. Even if if fit, I think it is also just one ping too poufy for your frame. Milder poufy gathers would be good drama. You can really wear that blue, though, and the more dramatic top over simple pencil skirt look. It is an " almost" good blend of tailored + drama.

Yes, the fit is too big, but I do find it rather a lot of shirt. I have this on my Pinterest and it's rather unusual don't you think? .https://www.pinterest.com/pin/183240278564997179/

  • Deb replied 9 years ago

Yes, it does look too big and I think it has too much fabric, both in width and length, and just generally has too much going on for a relatively petite person. It could suit a tall, slim woman way more. Sorry Suz, but beyond the colour it doesn't flatter you at all and is definitely a pass from me.

  • Joyce B replied 9 years ago

Diane, the one you posted is beautiful and fluid, I think it would be easier to style than a top with a crisp fabric.

  • Janet replied 9 years ago

It's such a cool shirt, but it's just too big and overwhelming on you. Not the right fit, I'm afraid. But a great color for you.

  • merwoman replied 9 years ago

Agreeing with everyone's wise advice - too much shirt for you!

Suz - Le Chateau has some really cool looking tops this season, might be worth checking out if you have the time.

  • replied 9 years ago

Chiming in to agree with the others. It just doesn't do anything for you, especially from the back and side views. It's too much of a one-hit wonder anyways - and don't you think the peplum would be all creased and wrinkled after the first hour of wearing?  This just doesn't look like you.

  • Staysfit replied 9 years ago

I have nothing to add here, it's too big for sure and not very flattering, but your modeling job was fantastic and deserves some applause!

  • Sal replied 9 years ago

I am not sure I 'get' the shirt unfortunately....the colour is wonderful on you though.

  • catgirl replied 9 years ago

Oh, Suz - I really though this would work for you.  I can see the difficulty even though it's so close to right!

  • Marley replied 9 years ago

I love this shirt!  I didn't realize that Una had ever gotten it - evidently it didn't work for her?  I really, really want to like this on you Suz - but it just looks too big to me - but, I think you've got the right idea in wanting something similar  to this for your appearance capsule.  Also, the color combination is one of my favorites and looks smashing on you!

  • Marilyn replied 9 years ago

The colour is beautiful on you but I don't love the shirt on you.

  • Beth Ann replied 9 years ago

Sounds like you've made a decision! I do like the idea of an arty-sculptural blouse for your wardrobe!

  • Karie replied 9 years ago

It just looks too big on you. Even if it fit better, I think the fabric is too stiff. Sorry!

  • Deborah replied 9 years ago

Suz, echoing the others.  Love the idea of it but definitely too big, shame tho because the shoulder fit looks perfect.

  • Jaime replied 9 years ago

Your faces tell the story (to my great amusement). The color is great on you, love the skirt with the shoes, but the fit is tricky and off. Good to see you though!

  • tulle replied 9 years ago

Though I love the color, I'm afraid this is way too much fabric on your frame.  I've been running into this problem myself lately with some of the asymetrical/long-peplum-ish things out there right now.  It's hard to get volume right.

  • Greyscale replied 9 years ago

I agree with everyone - cool concept but doesn't quite work.

Incidentally, this shirt might be a rare case where scrunching the sleeves is less flattering. It adds too much extra chaos.

    Joining the choir... :(

    Have a good trip!

  • Dixie replied 9 years ago

Oh :( Like some said, the idea is cool but the fit is wrong. Too bad.

  • Daria replied 9 years ago

Have a great trip! I don't have much to add about the blouse - beautiful color but I think you need to be a bit curvier to fill it in. :)
