K/R Tory Burch dress and if K, help me style.

So. I bought this gorgeous Tory Burch dress at the NAS.

I love this dress. It is beautiful, nicely made, drapes well, and (if I say so myself) looks good on me. It also packs without wrinkles. And it seems as if it should be versatile.

Except...2 months after the NAS, the tags are still on it. And I can't see myself wearing it in the foreseeable future. And even on sale, this was a big expense for my budget. So I am wondering if I should send it back.

What's the problem? Well...despite the fact that my mother, on seeing it, nodded approvingly and told me, "You could wear that dress anywhere..." I can't for the life of me figure out how or where to wear it.

To begin with, there's the fact that it has sleeves, but is a lighter weight fabric. So is it for summer, fall, winter, or spring? In my climate, it would mostly be a transitional weather dress, I've realized.

Because if I really want to wear it in winter, how would I? Other than nude hose, I can't think of a colour that would work well (or not one that I could easily find). And then, what about footwear? And none of my toppers look right with it, either. (Admittedly, I don't have many toppers at the moment, but that's another story.)

Not only that, but I'm having trouble imagining when I'd put it on. For what type of occasion?

I think if I worked in an office I'd wear it to work. But I don't work in an office.

It feels too ladylike for most of my appearances; I'm much more likely to wear jeans and a cool jacket to one of those. And if the occasion is truly dressy, I want something dressier than this. Something like my Nicole Miller sheath.

It might be a going-out-for-dinner with Mr. Suz dress...but we stay in more often than go out. I will put on a dress for our dinners in -- but I usually reach for a casual dress. Even when we go out, it's often casual, and if we're out to a fancier place, I'd probably want something a bit less conservative-feeling.

I don't do revealing or va-va-voom. So I would not be looking for anything overtly sexy. Ever. But this dress feels "pretty" rather than "subtly alluring" if that makes sense. And that means I'd be less likely to choose it for a date night.

It does look great with my red winter coat. So it could be covered up that way in cooler weather.

I'm just beginning to wonder if maybe in my life there's more of a dichotomy between my casual and smart casual and my dressier capsule than I sometimes suppose. Seems like I want my items either one way or the other.

If I'm missing something obvious and you can see great ways for me to wear this dress, please let me know. While expensive, I can afford it. It might mean not having something else later this year, but that's okay. It's excellent quality and lovely and if I could wear it, I would wear it, if that makes any sense at all. I also think it probably has style longevity and won't date too quickly. And since it's a goal to build a closet of fewer but higher end items, I'm disposed to try to make it work.

Hmm. Maybe it's just too ladylike and not princely enough for me?

It really is pretty! What about with tall boots and under a coat in the (not most severe) winter and early spring? It looks nice for outings in big cities, dinners out when travelling, maybe some sorts of appearances?

  • kkards replied 10 years ago

suz, it seems to me that this dress would be prefect for anywhere/everywhere that you were planning to wear the suit that you are looking for. now, that being said, as a dress, instead of separates, it is much more limiting, because you can not break it up. (which is part of the reason i don't wear a lot of dresses).

  • Janet replied 10 years ago

My immediate thought was booties and a denim or leather jacket, and boom, you're done. Even a scarf at the neck and tights for warmth for chilly weather.

I understand though. You and I have very similar needs from our wardrobes, being self-employed creatives, and I agree that sometimes items like this fall into an in-between category. A little too dressy or not dressy enough. I have to make a conscious effort to "dress up" for a day to wear even a seemingly versatile, multipurpose dress like this.

  • Ornella replied 10 years ago

I think the dress is beautiful and well worth spending time on figuring out how to incorporate it into your life.

But I hear you. Things can linger in the closets because they simply aren't the best choices for whatever wardrobe needs are, not that they are not good as the item of clothing itself.

With that in mind, can we try to analyse it from the other side - where would you like to wear it and how can you make it work for those occasions?

  • Ingunn replied 10 years ago

Suz, I agree with others here - it can definitely work! I like the idea of denim jacket and boots. How long can't you wait before you return it? Sometimes I have experienced that a piece can linger in my wardrobe for months, but suddenly I'm ready to wear it, and it becomes a workhorse. I am particularly thinking of my multicolored silk tunic.

Your dress is beautiful on you.

  • Aquamarine replied 10 years ago

I purchased this dress to build up my dress capsule which was non-existent after years of wearing pants/dressy suits for dress-up occasions. Only you can decide if it fits your lifestyle/needs but I think it's very versatile and will not date quickly. I can see it with a number of toppers/jackets as well as all matter of boots/booties. Of course pumps will work too. I actually think the weight is perfect for fall and winter...if you run cold, you can add a leather jacket or blazer, but worn alone you won't overheat. It *is* very lady-like but I think you have the items to make it more edgy.

  • Classically Casual replied 10 years ago

I think it's a lovely, but not special enough dress.  To me it reads very corporate wear, not artsy/creative.  Maybe a funky pendant necklace to make it more you?  (But how it appears on my computer screen vs real life may be very different.)

  • Runcarla replied 10 years ago

This is a lovely dress on you, and if you decide to keep it--that would be great. Noting your concerns, though, I would suggest return. Beautiful as it is, it will become a closet orphan for you. If it has been in your closet for 2 months and you haven't worn it yet, then you must have your bases covered with other items that you love more.

  • Traci replied 10 years ago

I think this dress is beautiful on you.  It seems like it should be the kind of thing that you can throw on with limited accessories and wear just about anywhere.  My biggest concern is with which season you'd wear it.  I'd wear this dress all winter in Wisconsin, but I'm warmer natured than most here.

Where's that navy sleeved dress thread?  I think many of the same combinations would work here.  I can see it with navy blazer, taupe leather, denim jacket, etc. Try it with the crisp white shirt under it too. In my own closet I've noticed I often have a hard time coordinating with prints containing navy.   I get stuck feeling like the only neutral they can go with is navy.  You have lots of navy and taupe, though and I think those would both be great here.

How about layering a pencil skirt over the dress?  Extra warmth and versatility.

My biggest reservation is that I don't know if this dress is different enough from some of the other sleeved dresses you have that you feel more yourself in.  I love it, but if you don't love it maybe it should go back.

eta:  How about a chambray shirt layered over top and tied at the waist?

  • JulieJohn replied 10 years ago

If you (kinda) love something, set it free. ;)

I think your mom killed it with her remark. That remark almost makes me dislike it, and it's a lovely dress. Note to moms everywhere, if you hate something your daughter is wearing, tell her the same thing Suz's mom did. Chances are you will never see it again.

  • velvetychocolate replied 10 years ago

Beautiful dress! How about casualizing it with Marks Report booties and a cropped denim jacket?

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

Suz, I have no explanation for why the tags are still on that dress. It really surprises me. Perhaps it was the price tag that scared you from wearing it? I'm not sure. Logically, it's no different to the Kamalikulture turtleneck dress.

I have seen this dress in person on many bodies, and it looks even more stunning in person. The fabric - which does not come through in the photo - is luxurious and heavenly.

I am in favour of keeping the dress. It's your colours, it has sleeves, and fits perfectly. You could even wear it to your step son's wedding.

  • Sveta replied 10 years ago

I do love this dress and you know this, Suz. I don't find it "too ladylike" for you either. Have you tried it with your leather jackets, I think it can work with them.
I think the main problem is the weight: it is on the lighter side for winter, for our winters anyway. I remember it was you concern from the start. And our transitional weather period is pretty short.

I would say that if you cannot wear it in winter (too cold) and in summer (too hot) and only can truly wear it in transitional weather then it would be wise to return it: for this price you would need to get a good wear of it or it should cover special occasions. However if you can winterize it with booties and tights and a jacket over it then it may be worth keeping (I am thinking navy opaque tights and your navy booties for example).

It is a very beautiful dress and it looks great on you and I would hate to see it go but if it cannot pull its weight in our closet then returning it is a wise thing to do.

  • Sveta replied 10 years ago

Angie has a point on it being similar in weight to Kamalikulture dress so can serve similar purposes. So - why you wear one and not another? Maybe price tag does play a role?

  • Marmee replied 10 years ago

I think I agree with Sveta, except that I'm wondering if you could wear silk long underwear under it so that it's more wearable.

  • Amy replied 10 years ago

Oh Suz, that is such a pretty dress! I hope you can find a way to make it work for you. Wouldn't navy tights work with that? Throw a jacket on over it---refined or rugged and you' re good to go for lots of occasions. You could also pop a sweater over it, making the dress work more like a skirt.

  • merwoman replied 10 years ago

Such a dilemma. If you return, will you regret it later? The colour is really beautiful on you - and it looks like there is a gorgeous texture to the dress.
Others have suggested great styling options - I was thinking how fantastic the mixed media denim jacket that belongs to Angie and Janet would look with this dress. What about that black blazer you recently purchased? I think it might be worthwhile holding on to this dress until you have the supporting players in place. Great thing about Nordstroms is their return policy.

  • Vix replied 10 years ago

    Hi Suz --

I really think it's the navy (just because of your black-centric footwear), the fairly distinct print, and/or the price tag stopping you, because I've seen you wear knit dresses and skirts a million different ways. You could even treat this like a skirt, for that matter, and layer knits over it.

And it's really, really nice on you.

As you may recall I had similar reservations with a deeply discounted DVF dress that I'd given careful thought to before *and* after purchasing. I had a million reasons to pick something else -- still too hot, not quite the right footwear, was too bold for work and too boring for personal use, etc.

After 2 (or 3?) months I cut the tags and now it's getting out and about.

I go through phases where I feel guilty if I can't justify something being 100% practical -- maybe you're in one of those? Especially since winter's coming....

I had to make peace with my wrap being a 2-3 season dress vs 4. And peace with the fact that all my other jersey dresses were a lot less expensive -- because I think that was really the hang up for me, acknowledging it was a real want vs need. After all, I bought the DVF because I *wanted* a more breathable silk jersey vs synthetic!

I think you really need to style this up and then decide. Maybe this dress is just a nice to have, but not practical enough to keep around given your lifestyle, budget, and desire to keep your closet smaller season-to-season.

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

Another point. You ARE pretty and ladylike - just like the dress. That's a good thing in my mind.

I will say that I am not in favour of Winterizing the dress. I feel the same way about this dress as I do my own kamalikulture dresses. They look best on their own with pumps - which for me is Summer and early Autumn - and if I'm lucky a hot Spring day. In a pinch a trench coat or lightweight jacket is a good topper. So you may have missed your weather window to wear this dress Suz, unless you're inside with the heat cranked up.

On that note, I run VERY cold, and am constantly amazed at what bloggers and people on this forum wear in cold weather. I keep on thinking that they just don't feel the cold in the same way that I do. It's the only explanation. So maybe Suz, you can wear this dress and not feel cold in Winter.

I'm not hiding the fact that I really want you to keep this frock.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

These are all super points and really helpful.

Let me try to address them, and I'm also going to try to take some more pics with some styling options this afternoon.

Angie and Sveta raise a good point -- I wore the Kamalikulture dresses already, so why not this one? Is it price? Well...it could be. But I don't think so. It is just that touch dressier than the Kamalikulture ones...and more ladylike. The Kamalikulture dresses are more body con and stretchier than this one and for some reason that makes them feel more casual.

I think what's held me back from wearing is the combination of fabrication weight (neither here nor there for my climate) and level of dressiness.

I bought this dress because I had NO sleeved winter dresses in my closet. None. Since then, I got the David Meister dress. And now, in comparison, this one feels too insubstantial without slip and topper for our winters.

Also, there is the hose issue. Sheer hose are not warm enough in our winters. And tall boots don't look great with the dress...or at least my tall boots don't. And finding tall boots is a tall order for me!

I don't think it works with either of my leather jackets. In fact, I don't have any toppers it looks good with. The best would probably be my denim jacket. But it's not even great with that.

Angie, I was explicitly thinking about my stepson's wedding when I bought this dress -- and I would like to wear it then. But even there...it's the hose that present a problem. Inside I can probably wear sheer nude. But but but....you know how cold it gets in these parts.

And then I think -- one wear for the year? Okay...maybe I'd wear it at Christmas, too. But that would probably be it, and I could easily come up with other alternatives to wear for those events.

Still, sleeved dresses in my colours in nice fabrics are as scarce as can be! So I don't want to give it up without a fight. ;-)

  • AviaMariah replied 10 years ago

I wonder if Angie has a point about the price tag holding you back.  That's something I could see myself doing...because the cost is higher than my usual, I make it a more special occasion dress in my mind.  Just ask yourself "if this dress cost $90 would I think about it differently?".  I think it's a beautiful dress and I think it is subtly alluring on you because of the beautiful fit and color on you.  I like some of the other's suggestions of toppers and boots.  But I think you know yourself pretty well so I'm sure you'll make the right decision.

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

We posted at the same time, Suz.

After reading your last comment, I do think you should return the dress. You're just not as positive about it as you should be to love it for that price point.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

No ----- you know what? Angie and Sveta have hit on it. The window for wearing this dress is transitional weather in my climate: fall and spring, essentially. Someone who worked in an office might even wear it in summer, but I can't because I don't have air conditioning and live in a hot-summer climate.

I don't like the way this dress looks layered up for winter. I like it to stand alone. Maybe with a coat, but otherwise on its own.  And it's just not warm enough to do that in our winters. I'd have to compromise on footwear and hose; I'd have to wear a topper and a slip underneath...it just won't work.

The Kamalikulture dresses are similar, except I do have toppers that I can wear with them, so that extends their wear season by just enough. Also, they look better with my booties and boots than this one does. So they have just a bit more versatility.

    Hmmm.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Yes, Angie -- I agree. I adore it in theory and I hope I won't regret sending it back, but at this price, I can find a great suit jacket and I know I'll wear that to death. So....
Thank you all for your help!!!

  • MsLuna replied 10 years ago

Suz, this dress is amazing on you! And your mom is right about its versatility: you can dress it up or down! I own a few dresses like these (though I have a romantic and slight bombshell influence to my style) and I've managed to style them and dress them down for my casual work environment.

I'm with Janet: I can see a denim jacket and booties with this outfit. Leather moot jackets can work with this too, to give it an edge. If you want to be a bit formal, top it up with a tailored black blazer. Basically if you change the toppers and the accessories, you can easily change the vibe of the dress!

So I vote KEEP due to its versatility and how amazing it looks on you!

  • Sveta replied 10 years ago

I think you should return it and put this money towards the Theory jacket you really want and need - it will make the jacket a bargain, no? ;-)
Life is too short to spend it fighting with clothes. If you have not worn it yet when the weather was pretty right for it (September and half of October) then your heart is not with it. Thanks God for Nordie's generous return policy this would be just a shopping mistake and not an EXPENSIVE shopping mistake.
    Onward and upward!

  • Ariadne replied 10 years ago

I love this dress on you so much, but it sounds like it's doomed to become an orphan.  Send it back and get the black Lanai?

  • Scarlet replied 10 years ago

Oh, sad to part with something that gorgeous, but your reasoning is sound.

  • catgirl replied 10 years ago

I have a couple of dresses I keep for weddings, fantasy movie premieres, and so on.  I could easily hoard such items but it makes no sense.

This dress looks fab on you and meets that kind of standard, but you have to love it and feel perfect for those occasions.

If you're not dying to wear it otherwise, I'd return and put the money to something more useful.
I have returned many an item that technically was perfect but either had no use or didn't sing to me.  Seems counter-intuitive that something could look so fantastic on us and yet not steal our hearts - but it happens.

  • Day Vies replied 10 years ago

I think the dress is really pretty. The cut and fit are of course flattering.
However, the print isn't working for you. I think it's too ladylike. It could be made to work but I am coming around to the view point that a piece should stand on its own and you should not have to work that hard to make it you. I hate to be the nay sayer but I think this is the primary reason it's still sitting in the closet with tags on.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Thanks, all. It is going back, and thank heaven for Nordie's return policies! I will be able to buy something different. Unfortunately, they don't have the Lanai jacket in black in the urban stretch. :-(

Hmmm. Off to peruse. Kind of neat to think I now have this money in my pocket...

  • pastrygirl replied 10 years ago

Omigosh, I have loved this dress ever since I saw it on you. But, I found it in store and didn't even try it on because I knew I would never wear it, as beautiful as it is.

  • Gaylene replied 10 years ago

Good that you made the right decision for you. And, I'd look at this as a defining moment in your style journey, Suz. Your level of awareness about what works for your style and your wardrobe is what so many of us are working towards on this forum. I'd say you just graduated into the senior ranks ;)

  • sarah replied 10 years ago

I'm sad to see the dress go back, because I think it is stunning on you. But Sveta has laid out some wise reasoning, IMO.

  • Caro in Oz replied 10 years ago

I see you are returning the dress & I think you made the right decision Suz. If the dress can only be worn for a short period of the year & it doesn't go with your toppers &/or footwear then it is all too hard imo - no matter how lovely it looks on you.  Your $$ are better spent on a workhorse :)

  • Emily replied 10 years ago

I think you made the right call sending it back - it looks great on you, but it is definitely demure and pretty rather than subtly alluring or quirky and cool.  I am sure you will find something awesome to spend those fashion dollars on!

  • Nicole D replied 10 years ago

I admire your discipline. It is beautiful, but not practical, for you.  Well done.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

This dress falls into that category of items that look gorgeous on but still gets returned because it simply doesn't work for your lifestyle.

I love this dress on you Suz but you shouldn't have to work so hard to make it work for you.

  • Adelfa replied 10 years ago

I agree with Day Vies about the print. However whatever the reason it didn't steal your heart, it's good you're returning it. I'm trying to return things I don't love, too :)

  • Lyn D. replied 10 years ago

I have enjoyed reading this thread Suz!
It is helping me to understand why I too have a dress that looks great but remains unworn, for different reasons.
We have an Aussie version of Nordstroms, but they recently changed their return period to 30days only. I am glad you will be able to return yours and spend the money on something more suitable.

  • Joy replied 10 years ago

This dress is like the boyfriend my mother wanted me to marry...lots of wonderful qualities but I wasn't in love. There's something better waiting for you.

  • Marley replied 10 years ago

Return it.  Any clothing item that causes you this much doubt and questions about how/where/when to wear it - to me, means it's not going to work in your wardrobe.  I'm of the belief that when you buy an item it should seamlessly fit into your wardrobe and lifestyle (without having to think too hard about it)  - and this dress is not doing that for you.

ETA:  Oh, I see that you are returning it.  Good call!

  • JAileen replied 10 years ago

I guess I'm too late, but I thought navy suede boots would have looked great with the dress.

BTW, I was able to return some sandals to Nordstroms that I'd had for four months but had never worn. They are wonderful.

  • Beth Ann replied 10 years ago

I think this post is a perfect example of why we take care to build wardrobes,
instead of buying beautiful pieces of clothing!  We are clothing our
bodies to live our lives as they really are!

This dress needs to earn its place in the closet and do what a dress does best -- stand on its own when necessary, and adapt to changing conditions!  Sounds like this dress doesn't quite fit the bill!

I adore the dress, of course, and even in Chicago, this dress would work for me on all but the coldest days in winter.  I run warm, and my work environment is quite warm -- even the church is.  Both DH and I were fanning ourselves while singing the Gloria Patri this morning!  Of course, being an Opera Diva, I'm an expert at fanning while singing, having perfected my one handed fan-slap in Traviata!

  • Deborah replied 10 years ago

Suz, sadly I have missed this whole discussion...where was I? And I see you are returning so for what it's worth I thought I would share my thoughts. I see you are returning and I think that's the wise decision here. The dress is lovely on you, no question. However I find it kind of bland. I know that's odd to say about a patterned dress with colour but I just feel 'something' about it is not quite 'you'. It reminds me of a similar dress I bought (more neutral tones) to wear to a day time wedding. I wore it to the wedding and have not worn it since. My dress is about to be listed on Ebay:) I realised that the dress was just 'too conservative' for me and I feel this actually fits in the same category for you. I am finding it difficult to really articulate what I see but it's the conservative aspect of the dress I think. You deserve to spend your money on something you love so much you want to sleep in it lol xxx

  • replied 10 years ago

Okay, off the tippy-top of my head (and not having read the other replies) let me say that,

    1.  Yes, it is theoretically a dress that you could wear anywhere, like your Mum said, but

    2.  It reminds me an awful lot of another wintery, sleeved floral dress that you had and never wore.

The colors and the print tend to make it less versatile IMO. I had that dark printed BCBG wrap dress which I could never wear much either. The dark colors said Winter to me, the fact that it was a dress meant I was more apt to wear it in Summer, but it was polyester/nylon, with 3/4 sleeves, so that meant Spring or Fall, but the colors weren't too Springy, so that meant Fall, but I was always either hot and sweating in it, or cold, and it didn't receive jackets very well. Yeah, I know what you mean!

  • replied 10 years ago

I think you made the right choice, Suz.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Aw, Claire, I DID wear that dress. Did too!!

Admittedly, not as much as I expected. Probably about 5 times a year.

You are so right. Back it goes.

  • karymk replied 10 years ago

Suz, I don't even need to look at the dress to know that just from your post you are trying to talk yourself out of this purchase.  If you don't love it now, you probably won't, and that "miracle" occasion that you are saving it for might not happen before you are sick of this dress.

Find a way to send it back and buy something you adore and know you can use in several ways for sure.

Let us know what you do!
