Milking it. 2 piece "dress" and other stylings.

I neglected to tell you all yesterday my real reason for ordering from J. Crew: this Liberty Print skirt came back into stock in my size and on sale. I've now worn the matching top several times and absolutely adore the print and the fabric -- it's incredibly light and cool, a lovely quality of cotton. So when the skirt popped into my bag, I couldn't resist giving it a try.

This is a definite keeper. Fully lined. With pockets!! The waist is a bit large for me in my usual size but wearable now -- if I lose weight it would be an easy alteration.

I can wear both pieces together as a "dress." I can also wear the skirt with almost all the tops in my closet, and most of the footwear. Various versions displayed -- of course I like some more than others. Very easy to dress up or down. Can be worn day or night. To the beach or out to dinner. I don't know if it is a style departure or not -- it is indeed a bit more feminine than my usual -- but it feels very natural to me and easy to wear. I hope you approve!

LOVE LOVE this on you. The print is darling and remind me of my "wallpaper dress" :). Feminine but very you. I love it with the matching top - and the stripes!

  • rachylou replied 5 years ago

That is soo soo great! Man, they’re sold out! I love two-piece dresses and this looks awesome on you - and is obviously versatile! Your pattern mixing is the bees knees.

  • Sara L. replied 5 years ago

That is an incredibly versatile skirt!  Great stylings.  I love the faux dress look and you still get a skirt that goes with so many options from your closet.

  • Suz replied 5 years ago

Thank you all! Funny how you just *know* some things are keepers the second you pull them on. I might have doubts about some things, but this felt absolutely right. Then again, I already had the top, so I knew the quality.

Roxanna, I thought of your "wallpaper" print. Yours actually reminds me of our bathroom wallpaper (a William Morris design, Pic 1.) And this is different colours but bears a similarity.

One thing I like is that it will encourage me to branch out a bit with colours of tops -- I might try green or pink (neither of which I own). On the other hand, I very obviously have no need to shop for a companion for this since there are plenty already in the closet.

  • Christina F. replied 5 years ago

Not only does this look great, I appreciate the the styling ideas for a skirt like that. Thank you!

  • replied 5 years ago

Very pretty, and indeed versatile.  Is this a different colour way than shown in the JCrew find pic?

  • Elly replied 5 years ago

Yes! Particularly love it as a dress and with the denim shirt.

  • JAileen replied 5 years ago

I love your “dress”! I thought of doing that, but my size was out, etc. Anyway, it looks wonderful.

  • Suz replied 5 years ago

It's the same colour as in the Find, Lisa. Background is navy and the print is periwinkle, white, blush, pink, various greens, pale yellow, mauve, a very pale orange and heaven only knows what else. In the photos above, the first one is our wallpaper (for Roxanna) and the other two are the fabric of the skirt/ top. It basically goes with anything as far as I can see. :)

  • DonnaF replied 5 years ago

STUNNING!!! In all its variations. Don’t you wish everything could be this fabulous? It takes my breath away.

  • Chris987 replied 5 years ago

Wow! Awesome, stunning, gorgeous....and it says so much about what a great wardrobe you started with that one piece can do so much. I especially love the white shirt outfit a la Caroline Herrera.

  • replied 5 years ago

Absolutely gorgeous. Wonderful find and yeas you were smart to get both pieces

  • Sal replied 5 years ago

Great find and looks!! I love the skirt and two piece dress!!

  • Runcarla replied 5 years ago

Lovely, Suz! Liberty fabric is wonderful! Last sumer DS#1 picked up a Liberty print shirt at the Simons in Ottawa and it became his favourite shirt. The print is kind of medieval on a teal background.

  • SarahD8 replied 5 years ago

Runcarla, that’s strawberry thief! One of my faves and one of William Morris’s most iconic prints. It was actually inspired by the cheeky thrushes in his garden.

Suz, the skirt and top look fantastic on you and all of these stylings are superb. You really cannot go wrong with Liberty. Sigh......

  • Suz replied 5 years ago

That's a gorgeous print, Carla! They really do have some beauties.

Chris, maybe what it says about my wardrobe is that 8/10 of it comes from J. Crew, so naturally the pieces work together, LOL. Honestly...I try to purchase elsewhere, but typically end up falling back on what I know will work.... Viva has said the same....or maybe it's just that the prep in me won't go away...

  • Mirjana replied 5 years ago

OMG, how lovely skirt! You styled it perfect, it is so versatile skirt, unexpected with leopard print top. I love all outfits. You gave me some ideas for my floral skirt.

  • Elle replied 5 years ago

Lovely lovely skirt.  I like it both with the matching top and with the others you've tried.  One of my favorites is #5 but all work well.  I can see why you choose this skirt over the silk flapper dress.

  • Peri replied 5 years ago

Are you magic or something?! I've never seen something so successfully mixed so many different ways. My favorite was is 1-3, because I'm simple and not magic, but it all looks spectacular and I'm in awe of your fashion creativity.

  • Joy replied 5 years ago

I love that skirt, l do I do
I would love it with every shoe.
    I love it as a 2-piece dress.
I love the pattern mixing, I confess.
And you could wear it in the rain.
And you could wear it on a train.
Out to dinner, it's a winner.
With a hat in the sun, it would be such fun.
With sandal or sneaker, to be the main speaker.
I'm a sucker for it with denim jacket for a trucker.
I love that skirt. I love it so. Wear it, wear it wherever you go.

Joy - I wish I could like your comment - so fun!!

  • Becky replied 5 years ago

Oh, JOY! I am grinning broadly!

Suz, this is so fabulous that these pieces can be worn as a dress and in so many other ways with items you already have. It is *really* hard to pick a favorite!

  • anne replied 5 years ago

    Wonderfully versatile

  • 3style replied 5 years ago

Cheered me up Joy. Awesome outfits Suz.

  • kerry replied 5 years ago

    Joy - so fun!

Suz - waving at my skirt twin. This is a wildcard for me because 1. I don’t wear skirts, 2. I don’t wear pleated skirts and 3. I don’t wear midi skirts.

But ... this one just works! Fabric is gorgeous! I’ve worn it for Mother’s Day brunch, Mother’s Day Tea and Father’s Day at our school, kindie graduation and just for out and about. It is SO easy to wear.

  • Suz replied 5 years ago

Kerry, I know, right? It just feels easy! Is it the pockets or the fabric or the length or the cut....I'm not sure what. (Maybe it's the elastic waist, LOL.)

What tops have you worn it with? Would love to see your styling ideas. Although obviously, I don't lack for options myself.

Thanks everyone for all the love for this. Funny, isn't it? I considered buying it at full price but it was an awful lot and while I was dithering it sold out, so that was that -- but I did get the top, and then couldn't wear it for a long time because our weather was too cold. The minute I put it on and looked in the mirror, I thought -- holy moly, I wish I had the skirt, too!

Joy, I am still chuckling about your poem. I read it to Mr. Suz and it made his night.

  • Elizabeth P replied 5 years ago

    Now Suz... THIS.
So so so perfect for you. And what brilliant styling, esp when you start to go “off-traditional”. I think the striped top is my fav.

Word of wisdom: make sure you don’t wash one piece a lot more than the other. It would be such a shame to have the dress option taken away by fading.

    And Joy... so awesome!

  • Jaime replied 5 years ago

I love it as a set and 6,13 and 15 (if I remember correctly) especially. Excellent choice!

  • Eliza replied 5 years ago

Jaw droppingly beautiful. What a great print and whenever you can pair something so easily with such good results, you know it is meant to be. Plus the dress look... plonk. Super winning. When Joy adds poetry, well, there's nothing more to be said.

  • Mainelady replied 5 years ago

STUNNING! Every outfit is a winner! I am a fan of Liberty prints and the one you have is particularly beautiful. The feel of the fabric and the styles of the top and skirt are also wonderful. You don’t need anyone’s approval, but I am happy to add my cheers to this gorgeous set!

  • Sisi replied 5 years ago

What a beautiful versatile skirt ! You look fab in all the outfits. I especially like # 6. And I agree that Joy wins the prize!

  • Gail replied 5 years ago

Love it with all the combinations what a great find for you.
    JOY :)

  • Column replied 5 years ago

WHAT JOY (and everyone else) SAID! I don`t know if I`m more envious of your looks or Joy`s poetic ability!

  • Katerina replied 5 years ago

What a wonderful set, Suz! LOVE. All combinations are great and the way it is a "dress" is stunning.

    Joy - so fun :-)

  • replied 5 years ago

I am still getting used to the tucked in-look on myself and I used to wear it all the time in younger years.  Glad it's coming back.  A beautiful skirt to play with in so many different gorgeous ways.  I like the skirt paired with its matching top and then adding a topper (jean jacket, etc) as you illustrate here.  That creates a long line of pattern which lengthens the body, esp if worn with a slight heel.  A feminine body-scape that is just simply lovely to behold.

  • Aquamarine replied 5 years ago

WOW! The most versatile skirt EVER. YLF!

  • RobinF replied 5 years ago

Wow, I love this! And Joy's poem of course. :)

  • Vix replied 5 years ago

You got your Fake Dress version of that other dress that was similar in terms of print but a bit off!

Looks wonderful worn together and of course I'm a sucker for the versatility you get with separates. Seems like there's no end to how these can couple up with the rest of your wardrobe.

    Enjoy!

  • Laura replied 5 years ago

Suz, you are the pattern mixer extraordinaire! You have fully integrated these pieces into your wardrobe in the most nimble way ... brava!

And Joy, brava to you too. It’s wonderful to have a YLF poet-in-residence.

  • JenniferAnne replied 5 years ago

Zowie! The pieces look so great on you, and I love how you've styled them in so many ways! Great versatility!

  • pil replied 5 years ago

Oh my goodness, what gorgeous stylings!

  • Jjsloane replied 5 years ago

I am a total sucker for Liberty prints and this looks so gorgeous on you. You've styled these pieces enough ways already to know they are unique but versatile.

  • KMM replied 5 years ago

Suz, this looks just gorgeous on you.  Would you mind if I asked what size you went with?  I think we are nearly size twins and the reviews on the website say it runs big; am wondering if the one small size that's left will fit me. Do you think the waistband could be altered to add more elastic if needed?
Despite my long standing avoidance of skirts I've been feeling the pull of the midi trend and have been eyeing this skirt as a wild card. Your post has nearly sealed the deal!

  • Suz replied 5 years ago

    knowmymethods, I'll PM you.

Thanks, everyone, for the lovely compliments. I know I will really enjoy this piece!

  • Karie replied 5 years ago

Super gorgeous! I love it as a “dress” and with the solid tops and the striped top the best. It looks great dressed up or down.

  • delurked replied 5 years ago

I love how even such a strong print can be mixed and matched so many ways. It looks great, and it’s nice to wear pieces that “feel” like us.
