Minkoff bag

Now that we are sorted on the gilet, next up is the Minkoff bag.

Apologies for the quality (or lack) of these photos. My camera went wonky when it saw this bag for some reason, but I think you can still grasp the scale, which is the main thing.

First, my review. This bag is a lovely soft leather. I love the simplicity of the style, the lack of ostentation. It has inner pockets for phone, etc. The hardware is my preferred silver. The colour "port" is a beautiful purplish-toned burgundy. It would look good with my grey puffer, or my navy pea coat, or (I think) with my grey and black Danier cutaway coat,  (or my gilet, ha ha) but it won't go with my red winter coat. That's okay. It doesn't need to be one bag to rule them all.

In general, I prefer a more structured bag. My best loved bag is a very structured shopper. But in reality I mostly carry larger totes and my backpack, because I need to carry my computer a lot and most shopper bags are just short of being large enough for that.

This bag is as big as my totes and it holds my computer. But I feel like it just looks rather large on me. I wonder if I could find an alternative. With Danier sadly gone, my options are now much more limited. Were there any other sale bags that might meet my needs?

I did not realize this bag is this big. That said, only in 4, I think it looks a little big. It feels too stuffed or something. It looks fine in the other photos.

I am a little shorter than you and all my bags are either this size or small cross body size which I put in the big bags. I just love big bags. Medium sized bags are no use to me.

  • Keix replied 7 years ago

I agree that the bag seems to overwhelm you, in photo #4 particularly. A pity because the color is gorgeous!

  • Suz replied 7 years ago

Yes. Well, it IS stuffed with the stuffing it came with in the store, LOL.

Maybe I should take that stuffing out and put my stuff in it and see how it looks. :)

  • Diana replied 7 years ago

Woah, that is enormous.  I had no idea it was that big from the photos on the Nordstrom website!

Are you looking specifically for a leather bag?  Also, how big is your laptop?

There's the Le Pliage leather tote in the NAS.  Also, the teal TUMI tote, but maybe that is too sporty.

The Kate Spade is not on sale but is the same style as my floral KS tote.  It holds my 13" macbook pro, and would probably fit a 15" but tightly.  There's also plenty of room for other stuff.  Nordies only has blush and black but there are many other colors if you look around.  Be aware that there are two sizes (Medium and Small) and only the Medium will hold a laptop.

I also just got a MZ Wallace Chelsea tote, which I really like. It is almost as big as a large Le Pliage but somehow does not feel quite so large.  I also feel like the hardware and leather details make it a little dressier.  Again, many other colors available in addition to the ones in the find.

ETA: I think part of the issue with the RM bag is that the strap drop looks too short, which exacerbates the hugeness.  Also, I find that when the strap drop is too short, a stuffed bag is really uncomfortable because it's a lot of bulk right in your armpit!  It's a lot more comfy if the bulk hangs a little lower down.

  • Eliza replied 7 years ago

I like the simplicity, color and shape of this bag. If you don't need quite that much space, to my eye, a slightly smaller bag would be better proportioned. Because that bag is not only wide, but quite deep across the bottom, it takes up a lot of Suz space. Hopefully, a port bag would be findable this season; the color seems to be having another moment.

It also might help make the gilet a little less of a fling...

  • Muffin replied 7 years ago

I saw these in store- gorgeous color, but yes too big. It seemed as if all the bags offered this year (that I saw in store) were either too big or too small...

  • Jules replied 7 years ago

I think it's too big and that was my reaction before reading most of your comment. It looks like luggage. Unless you had need for a nice overnight or commuting bag, ie/ really nice luggage that you might then stick a clutch or wallet-with-strap inside...

Having read the comments, Diana is so clever...the strap and body do seem mismatched, making the bag look oversized and heavy.

  • crazyone replied 7 years ago

I agree with you, this bag is too big on you.  I like Rebecca Minkoff bags, though--maybe stalk online sales for previous years' versions which may be sized differently?

  • replied 7 years ago

Wow - it's huge. I had no idea it was going to be this big. It looked like a regular sized hobo in the store photo.  I have this RM tote which I use in winter for my computer and other assorted detritus. It also functions as my carry-on for winter business travel.  It's no-where near as big as yours here.  I don't use it in the summer just to give it and myself a break from black leather, but it holds a lot and functions very well without being heavy to carry. It's a repeated style in her line each season.

  • UmmLila (Lisa) replied 7 years ago

I love the quality of RM bags, but this is a frequent bag issue for me -- I like to be able to carry all my stuff, which can include computer, water bottle, gym socks, cosmetic bag, wallet, phone, keys &c.

But smaller bags can look more stylish especially on the scale of a shorter person. I think you'd be better off with a structured tote that's just big enough for the laptop. I like the Kate Spade one that Diana recommended and with her comment that a longer strap drop is better.

I have a Cole Haan burgundy bag that is a year or two old, and good quality. I just looked on their website and found this much-marked down to $85 lovely <http://www.colehaan.com/camlin.....45790.html

  • texstyle replied 7 years ago

It is very large - do you need/want a large bag for your purposes? If so, it is lovely. If not, then maybe for everyday use a smaller bag would be better? I'm very partial to the color and am waiting for one in a similar shade to arrive myself. (not part of NAS unfortunately)

  • tulle replied 7 years ago

No suggestions, Suz, just commiseration!  I have the same problem with larger bags, and end up mostly with smaller crossbody bags for the best proportion.  BUT--a very soft slouchy bigger bag like yours can take up less visual space than a structured one, so I urge you to take out the stuffing and try it with the things you actually carry before you give up on it.  It's such a beautiful, timeless bag, and I sense that you really love it.  Also, if you plan to carry a laptop in it, your bag will have to be pretty large, so you might as well have a beauty!

  • replied 7 years ago

Maybe you need a big bag?
I love this one. The colour is super with navy and grey and I'm sure will work well with the Aquatalia booties.
I think I'm just in love with the colour and simplicity of it.

  • Suz replied 7 years ago

Ok. Thanks for all the input. Diana, those are great points and I really like the MZ Wallace bag you showed. I love my Le Pliage nylon bag, too, but it's a little casual sometimes and I would like a leather bag instead for winter.

Tex, I love the look of the one you are getting also, but fear it wouldn't hold my computer and that is something I really do need. I don't carry it every day -- but almost every day. I have some crossbodies and clutches for times when I won't be needing a big bag -- and medium sized bags are basically useless in my life.

Lisa, do those totes close up at the top? That's crucial for me. I like the shape, though. But i hope to avoid black if I can.

I also really like the suggestions to try it without the stuffing. I will do that and see what I think. If it still seems too large then I'm going to send it back.

  • Suz replied 7 years ago

Yeah, Smittie, me too -- I love a simple bag.

And I DO need a big bag...but maybe not quite this big!

  • Traci replied 7 years ago

Umm...now I kind of want it.

  • Style Fan replied 7 years ago

I love the bag.  It is big though.  I am not sure I would want to carry around such a big bag all the time.  I have a tote for my laptop and journals (about 4 of them) that I bought at a craft show.  Then I have my bag.

  • AviaMariah replied 7 years ago

This is why I have no luck shopping for bags online. It is so hard to see the scale. I love the color of this bag but I'm guessing it's over your size threshold. You'll find the perfect one.

  • Cerinda replied 7 years ago

That has to be the best-looking laptop-friendly bag I've seen in ages!  But I would pass on it if I were looking for a purse.

  • Joyce B replied 7 years ago

That's a lovely bag but I agree that it's too big. Is it heavy? It may work as a bag for travel but it's too large for just everyday use.
I have no suggestions, too bad that Danier is gone.

  • marianna replied 7 years ago

It is big but I think you wear it well. Honestly I think my favorite part of it is the color - the color is just perfect and so perfect on you. I like the bag but if you're not sure, I'd say keep looking for a different bag in that color. But I like it and I like it on you!

  • catgirl replied 7 years ago

I am a no on this, Suz. It's the size of a beach tote visually and swamps you. I am sorry. I'm not good with bag "style" though.

  • Gaylene replied 7 years ago

That's a lot of bag to be hauling around on a daily basis... :)

I can never forget Mr. G's reaction when a size 2 friend's DD gave her a large, and very pricey, designer bag as a birthday present. My friend and her husband came to dinner one night--and, of course, her new bag accompanied them. As soon as he had taken their coats, Mr. G frantically gestured to me, and, in a whisper, asked if my friend and her husband were having problems. My puzzled response, "No, why would you think that?", was met with his "Then why will Gail be spending the night at our place?"

  • Suz replied 7 years ago

    Hahaha...I know!!

Well, to be honest, we should probably compare all my bags so you can see what I usually carry around. Most are not smaller, but they may look it, due to sharper corners or something.

I'll go a bag-off tomorrow, with the MInkoff stuffed with what I'd actually carry vs. the stuffing from the place.

  • rachylou replied 7 years ago

I love the look of this kind of shape. It looks best carried in hand...but I personally have so many bag caveats. I insist on a hands free option, that they are extremely light, that the opening not be smaller than the bag itself, that the computer stand vertical in it for weight distribution... I guess I'm asking, do you have a strong back?

  • annagybe replied 7 years ago

Well if you dressed like an Olsen twin it could work.

  • Suz replied 7 years ago

Ha, Anna. Okay then!! The Row it is. :)

No, I think we need to see it with my stuff in, and I also think i probably need a different bag. Darn, though. I love the idea of it.

  • MrsK replied 7 years ago

Too bad the bag is too big - the colour is perfect for you. And you look AMAZING in pic 4!

  • Amy replied 7 years ago

It's a pretty color and shape, but sooo large it looks like a suitcase :(

  • rachylou replied 7 years ago

    I love me my Olsen twins...hehe :)

  • crazyone replied 7 years ago

    Suz, how about this bag?

  • UmmLila (Lisa) replied 7 years ago

Mr. Gaylene's quote is the best!

  • Beth Ann replied 7 years ago

I was hoping to find these in my store, and the colors are indeed amazing, but I immediately noticed their size, and decided they were too big for me.....and I'm not often overwhelmed by the scale of a bag.

I am so glad to see this color, however -- yummy!

And I'm sad that Danier is gone......

  • Lisa replied 7 years ago

Bummer on the bag, I agree with others, it's a great color but to large and unstructured for your style.

  • Maneera replied 7 years ago

Am I the only one who doesn't see a problem here? I actually like this bag ALOT. Especially since you're looking for a bag to carry laptop & tons of other stuff around. You aren't really looking for a *small* bag.

I'll confess though. I own 3 bags like this one here and I use them similarly. I also use them for traveling (can fit in so much) and sometimes for street shopping where I'm gonna buy little knick knacks and can just stuff them all in my bag. In summer, I'll even use it for a movie/lunch outing Coz I can comfortably stuff a lightweight shrug inside.

Like you, I'm most comfortable with medium sized structured handbags. But this size *has* it's own merits. Just my opinion, though. Put in your own stuff and see how large & heavy the bag feels then.

  • Suz replied 7 years ago

Thanks, Manny -- that's what I will do.

By the way, someone asked if it was heavy. I would say no, it is surprisingly light for a leather bag of this size! It feels really nice.

  • DJP replied 7 years ago

Perhaps I am blinded by how fantastic you look in the gilet, but I totally agree with Manny in this case. A bag that can accommodate a laptop will never be proportional on a smaller woman. Yes, perhaps it's a bit of a "statement" but to my eye it looks great on you and you wear it perfectly.

  • DonnaF replied 7 years ago

Ummm, maybe you need to get a smaller laptop?

DD and I struggle with the size issue too since I'm 5' 1" and she's maybe 5' 2" with smaller bones.  The bags that Nordies describes as *medium* are about as large as we can go without looking overwhelmed.  Perhaps we need an entourage to carry our stuff?

  • Joy replied 7 years ago

I'm a believer in having a variety of bags but, as Eliza said, this bag looks like it has a wide bottom. That may just be the stuffing. Otherwise it looks like a hobo. I'd like to see it with what you would usually carry in it. Right now it looks like it overpowers you. The wide bottom will knock stuff off shelves or cause people to think you are bumping into them when in tight places and narrow aisles. ( Don't ask how I know this!).

  • replied 7 years ago

I looked at the pics before reading your thoughts on the bag and immediately thought the bag was too large for your frame. It's a gorgeous color, though.

  • Suz replied 7 years ago

Hahahah, Joy -- too funny. Maybe we can be our own entourage and just bump everybody else out of the picture!!

We'll be the Little Big Bag Ladies.

  • catseye replied 7 years ago

I have been thinking about this bag now that I realized it is tHis big. I wasn't interested at all when I thought it was just a regular hobo bag size. LOL.

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 7 years ago

I agree the bag looks enormous on you. I also think it will look different with your own stuff in it, and that is the real test. I wouldn't rule it out till then. It is beautiful in every other way.

  • kerry replied 7 years ago

Gorgeous bag, gorgeous colour. Agreeing with everyone to try with your own stuff in it vs the stuffing which makes it look a bit too big. I think because you're tiny maybe a big bag that fits your needs should be less structured and more scrunchy (very technical term here) so it can collapse on your body a bit.

ETA I want this bag now :)

  • jill58 replied 7 years ago

The color is great. Could you post pics without the stuffing and some of your stuff in the bag? I've actually been eyeing the port RM Regan satchel that crazyone posted from ebay. I think the stuffing is really distorting the look of the bag. Someone posted a review on the Nordstrom website that said, "Loved this bag but when I took the paper stuffing out of it, I discovered it doesn't have a structured bottom. Everything falls to one spot in the bag & when you set it down the bag falls into itself. Love the style but if you like a bag that will hold shape & like a structured bag this is not for you."  So try it with your laptop and anything else you might carry--then see what you think. I love the look  but am someone who also sometimes feels overwhelmed by the size of certain bags. That said I have been carrying a large hobo for years. On the "pro" side, it can carry a huge amount of stuff. The major "con" is that that it can seem like a black hole of disorganization. Maybe a purse organizer would help.

  • Colette replied 7 years ago

What a gorgeous bag in a gorgeous color! And it's big. And it looks great on you. Since you need to carry a lot, you obviously need a big bag, but if you feel like it's overwhelming you, it's not your bag.

  • Deborah replied 7 years ago

Suz, I will start by saying I love big bags:). This photo reminded me of my most recent addition (pictured) from Oroton. It is a soft bag, and big-ish. Because it's soft and diet if moods to my body when carried in the shoulder it doesn't seem so big iykwim. My only question is can the strap be lengthened at all. Over your shoulder id like to see it hang a little lower.

  • Angie replied 7 years ago

psssssstttt.........take the stuffing out. It looks very fashionable.

  • Diana replied 7 years ago

Coming back to add:  definitely try it with your stuff, but make sure you put the laptop in.  I have this thing where I think laptops in hoboes look weird, since they are very rectangular and structured and therefore force the hobo to take on a rectangular shape when what it really wants to do is slouch.

  • replied 7 years ago

Sorry - way late to answer your question. Yes, it zips across the top. And now all I see is you as an Olsen twin . Thanks Anna .

  • AM replied 7 years ago

I'm a big bag gal! And this one has really nice lines.

  • anchie replied 7 years ago

It is on the big side, and I am not sure how this shape will look like with the laptop inside. Waiting for the pictures with yours stuff insteda of this bulky stuffing.
I just wanted to warn you about the color. It is gorgous color, no doubt. I liked it so much that I got the bag in the very similar shade. Thinking it will be so versatile, going with navy and gray and ... But thruth is, i don't find it so versatile. It looks great with all neutrals like in your pictures, but add additional color and it looks off. I am strugling to find additional peace like belt or shoes that will somehow bookend it. Whenever I try to wear this bag, there is always another bag that coordinates better with the outfit colorwise. And this one just sits unworn, causing me lot of grief. Of course, this is just my own expirience and may not apply to you at all.
