Monochrome and Tonal Blues (and wide legs, pleated and not)

Continuing my experiment with monochrome and tonal outfits. Blue is my easiest neutral/colour to work with because I have the components, in multiple silhouettes and textures. Here are a few options drawing on some newer items as well as older items.

Outfit 1 (different versions, pics  1-5) features the new pleated wide wide legs from BR along with a matching mock neck. The trousers are so comfy! Lovely to wear. Highly recommend!

This is pretty much monochrome, except for the belt, which is called Dutch blue (a slightly lighter, warmer blue) and of course the buckle.

I then tried it with different outerwear, more tonal than monochrome, but kept the bag blue (thank you, Angie) to see how that might feel. Verdict: despite being dark, monochrome ink or navy feels very "me" and I am comfortable wearing all blue, assuming I can add a bit of shine. If I have to wrestle together a travel capsule, a base of navy is my friend.

Notably -- the addition of the slight bit of contrast with the bag strap, and/ or the flecks of white in the infinity scarf (thanks, Ms. Mary!) made me much happier with the outdoor version of this outfit. Monochrome or tonal is fine...but I still like a hint of contrast via light/ bright, or shine.

Outfit 2, (pics 6-9) shows the same mock neck in mid-blue, with my new wide leg flocked menswear pants from Anthro. How I love these trousers! They are floor skimming with the black Eccos and a bit too long with the silver boots that I also tried. I probably should hem them, but oh, I love the drama of the length and might just leave them and wear with the footwear that works. I have at least 3 options to wear with them at this length.

The trousers are dark navy with a faint grey/white check, and black velvet flocking. Fun texture, a mix of femme and boyish that feels completely me. They are probably meant to be dressy, but I will dress them down a bit, too -- as here, or with denim. And they're super comfortable! This was to wear for an at home date night. I didn't try to play around with outerwear for this version since I wasn't going anywhere.

I'm learning a lot about my preferences from this experiment and also trying combinations I might not otherwise have tried.

I don’t wear pleated wide legs myself , but really like both pair on you . I can imagine how a denim shirt would look great with either pair !

  • Suz replied 1 month ago

Thanks, Lisa. I'll definitely wear them with a denim shirt or denim jackets.

The first pair are pleated; the second are flat front wide legs. Turns out I like both kinds of wide leg pants. I like slim pants, too, and will be happy to add a few more of those when they become more available, but I hope wide legs don't go completely off the radar because I do enjoy them so!

Stunning looks on you Suz! Very stylish and sophisticated. It’s interesting how just a bag strap or a belt buckle provide a hint of contrast and elevate the look.

    I can’t pick a favourite here.

You are one of our Queen Blues, and wear the crown - and blue!!! - with the best of them, Suz

    KILLER all round :)

LOVE BOTH PAIRS OF PANTS!!! And that silver belt, on you!

The versions with the hints of high contrast are even more pleasing to my eye because they bring out - accentuate -  your super cute silver hair, and radiant face! So:

    #3, 4, 5, 6 and 9 are my faves!!

#3, #4, #5 are KILLER to the Power of KILLER.

You look elegant, graceful and beautiful.

This is so fun and interesting! The both wide legs are fantastic on you and I love the pattern on the second pair. My favorite might be #4 because of the dramatic furry scarf! But the color of blue in the second outfit and the white belt is also outstanding. Gorgeous all around!

Wow! I gasped when I saw 3 and 4. Love the monochrome look, and the added texture and pattern in those pictures just make this outfit perfect. I love the added scarf so much. It’s hard to see the details of the other outfit but I’m sure it is fabulous. Really interesting pants. A great find for you.

Great looking wide-legs Suz, the navy monochrome is very elegant but I like it best with the additional tonal elements. They really pop against this darker colour.
Outfit #2 is such a fab tonal mix of blue and navy. Love the colour of the mock- neck on you. You've styled all of these beautifully.

Beautiful! Love #3-4, and # 6 - but all new great combinations perfectly done!

Love these outfits. Those flocked pants are so fun! My favorite coat with the first outfit is the leather trench - fabulous!

  • Suz replied 1 month ago

Thanks, Robin -- that is a vintage coat from the 70s. I don't wear it often but I love it!

    Slim Cat, thanks!

Dee, I completely agree -- for me, at least there needs to be a bit of.contrast in the outfit. I far preferred those versions too.

Brooklyn, thank you! I think what the experiment taught me was that if I want to go entirely monochrome, it would be useful to add jewellery or a scarf or some detail that adds that hint of contrast, regardless -- and it sort of reaffirmed my frequent use of scarves in winter. I was thinking that one of your chunky necklaces in silver tones mixed with tonal blue stones could be really useful. I don't wear necklaces a lot but maybe I should experiment in some second hand shops.

Jaime, Ms. Mary's scarf is really a great treat to wear. And so easy.

Angie, thank you! And I agree entirely that the versions with the hint of contrast are so much more "me."

    Thanks, Sal!

    Great new pants!

  • MsMary replied 1 month ago

YLF as always, and what fun to see you still rocking that scarf!

  • Suz replied 1 month ago

I still love it, Ms. Mary! It's the greatest!

  • Star replied 1 month ago

Quite a shock to see you in a darker monochrome outfit. It does look good.
However I also prefer the outside version with the white bag strap flecks. Looks more like Suz :).

I am blown away by the gorgeousness of the drama you created here and how easily you wear it! Love them all on you, but the touches of silver take it to the next level for me, as in #9. Really enjoy your explorations in blue!

  • Kyle replied 1 month ago

Wowza. STUNNING. I love the drama of these new pants. The drape and length of the first pair is beautiful. Also, I’m planning on wearing a blue turtleneck with black pants and silver heels later this week. Seeing your version of blue and black gives me confidence.

  • Lisa replied 1 month ago

Sounds like this experiment has been a success, that's great!

I love wide leg pants and both pants here are such good finds, they have drama, lovely drape, a great length, they are both perfection!

And you look lovely in blues, both in the lighter and darker shades. It's such a good signature color on you!

#9 is my favorite because of the accessories, the lighter belt and shoes is a fun twist to an outfit that would most often be paired with a dark shoe and belt. But the light is so much more fun!

  • Cookie replied 1 month ago

Very elegant! I especially love that coat in #5.

  • kellygirl replied 1 month ago

You are queen blue! I love the drama of the long coats and the floor skimming pants. So Fab!

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 1 month ago

These outfits are stunning, Suz. It's an interesting experiment, too, because I can see just how the monotone look brings out certain details. In 1, I notice the belt buckle and your ring. Your skin and hair also look radiant against this backdrop. The addition of the bag strap brings more attention to your face and eyes, plus the bit of hair peeking out from the cap. And the scarf casts full attention to your face. The leather trench is beautifully showcased against the navy column also. I can see why you love those flocked pants--they look fab on you.
You are giving us a master class in tonal styling--fun and enlightening!

  • Suz replied 1 month ago

What a sweet thing to say, Sharan! I am learning so much too, and from all of you!

  • Janet replied 1 month ago

Those flocked pants are awesome! What a great find. I don’t wear pleats but they look fab on you, and I am firmly and forever in the wide-legged, full-length pants club!

The silver accents are so good on you too. Just the right amount! And I still love that leather jacket. Another outstanding find.

  • citygirldc replied 1 month ago

I don't know which one of those items I like more.  #3 and #4 are so fab.  I'm getting so inspired by your looks. I need to look more into navy.

  • SarahD8 replied 2 weeks ago

I LOVE this silhouette on you!
And those flocked pants -- gah!
Great insight about using navy as the base for a travel capsule.
And I think your instincts about needing a bit of white or shine in these dark monochrome outfits are right on. (Curiously, despite my lack of silver hair, I feel the same?) For me, in the first outfit just that silver belt buckle does the job.
