My Fall 2013 purchases (Long and analytical)

Inspired by the wonderful MaryK and Annagybe, I'm posting my F/W 2013 purchases so far.  Because, oh yes, I fear I am not quite done! (I have a full shopping basket at Nordstrom's as I type this...)

So far, I am super happy with all my purchases. Only 3 items are still unworn.

1. Navy David Meister dress. This is a classic that I got on considerable discount and I bought it as my winter LBD. I'm not worried about it -- I'll wear it when the time comes. And even if I don't I am more than glad to own it. You never know when you'll need a simple, elegant dress at a moment's notice.

2. Grey knee high dressy boots. Weather has not called for them yet.

3. Donald Pliner bronze shooties. I knew these were a serious risk when I bought them. I love them, find them quite comfortable, and will certainly wear them over the holiday season. But, as I told Sveta when I bought them, they risk becoming near-orphans in my very casual life. I had to accept that they would be a few-wears-a-season purchase, and buy them anyway. The CPW is always going to be quite high on these -- which is okay with me, because I think it all averages out.

I've bought many more higher quality items this year, and love every one of them. I have also bought a bit of fast fashion at Zara -- and love those items just as much.

My costs have been similar to Mary K's -- well....similar if you don't count the knee high boots, that is! Those obviously added a huge amount.  But, since they were a generous gift from my mother, they do not come off my personal budget.

What I've bought:

1 David Meister dress       (Pic 1)
1 Tiganello  bag                (Pic 2)
1 Halogen pencil skirt        (Pic 2)

Shoes:

Munro Cranberry booties       (Pics 3 & 13)
La Canadienne Grey boots        (not pictured)
Donald Pliner Bronze shooties    (Pic 4)
La Canadienne Black boots        (Pic 5)
Zara Ink booties                               (Pics 2, 8, 10, 11)

Sweaters:

Only Mine  Dot cashmere                           (Pic 6)
DVF      blush leopard print                       (Pics 4 & 7)
Banana Republic Blue sweatshirt            (Pic 8)
Banana Republic Striped merino             (Pic 3)
Amber Sun  colourblock                           (Pic 9)
Zara grey                                                  (Pic 10)

Zara Jacquard jacket                                (Pic 2 & 11)

Shirts:

Halogen Chambray                           (Pic 12)
VC fuchsia                                         (Pic 13)

I also purchased two transition season dresses (Kamalikulture, pics 5 & 14) ) and the striped VC skirt (not pictured) for transitional weather.

Examining these purchases, clear favourites emerge, but other than the three items already mentioned, every single item has seen multiple wears already -- and don't forget, we are very early in the season here -- a season that will extend until the end of March at minimum. (And this is why I think it is okay, even justified, if I decide to add a few more items to my closet. The need for variety in our long winters is pretty obvious.)

Here, my new things are remixed with older items from last year or earlier: VC Elmay leopard pumps (last year); J. Crew boy shirt (spring); MK belt & J Crew jeans (spring); Noir trousers (last fall); Danier bag & jacket (last year); white belt (spring), Pettys (last winter), BR slouchy skinnies (4 years ago); Danier bag (last year, Theory trousers (last fall), SW booties (last winter); Comrags skirt (5 years ago); leopard belt (spring), Long and Leans (2 years ago); Old Navy denim pencil (2 years ago); modal sleeveless turtleneck (3 years ago), Theory moto skinnies (last fall); white Kut from the Kloth jeans (1.5 years ago)...and so on. That's probably too much information but could be useful to those just starting and thinking about how long it takes to build a wardrobe and how you identify your "keepers" over time.

If this seems like a lot of buying (and it does, to me!) keep in mind that although I did not follow a strict one-in-one-out rule (since I'm still building a workable wardrobe) I did purge more than I bought, so I actually have fewer items in my closet now than at the start of the season.

What's great is that the items I have are starting to work well together and for most occasions I feel as if I can put outfits together pretty quickly without a lot of stress. Now and again I still go into a tizzy (especially when travel looms) but I do feel more prepared and happier in my daily activities. Thanks to YLF! :)

Wow!  Nothing but winners here!  My favorite is that fab DVF sweater, but each and every piece is just amazing!  Well done, Suz!!

  • Sveta replied 10 years ago

Suz, are these purchases for the whole 2013? Then it is not much at all! I am sure I bought much more this year. You have a fabulous wardrobe which works well for your quite varied lifestyle, well done!
I think I am done with shopping for this year. While there are still things I would like to add I have more than enough already and need to wear the heck out of my closet (like Angie likes to say).
The only exceptions would be the following:
    - white jeans;
    - dressy low heel boots
    - neutral satchel bag
    - cream and bright wool scarves for my new black coat
( the last two are inflicted on me by my new cobalt trousers which alredy made me buy a coat and booties...now I need a bag and scarves to wear with this coat :-0 )

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

I was the midwife of closet mayhem when I made you buy that coat, Sveta. But I am not sorry!! (she said with a wicked laugh....bwaaaahahha)

This is not 2013 purchases, only fall/ winter 2013!! And now you can insert the blushing face. If we added in my spring/ summer 2013 purchases we would find a much longer list.

However, I do feel that they have all been very useful and all are getting worn except the few I mentioned -- and it is really only that their time has not yet come.

I am still in the market for:

Taupe or grey jeans (or any coloured jeans, really -- I have decided that I need some non blue non white non black bottoms, darn it!!).

    A suit...or at minimum, a great jacket.

A pair of faded skinnies -- not calf sucking and not distressed but slim.

Some "wants" include another bag for winter, new light taupe booties, another coat should the right one present itself....but these are pressing and can wait another year, as can the suit, for that matter.

  • Mary Beth (formerly LBD) replied 10 years ago

I really really love your selections - as always, you look polished and sleek - but comfortable and happy!   Win-win, and gorgeous :)

  • replied 10 years ago

Thank you for the comprehensive report! I love details. I'll have to check back and find Anna and Mary's threads, too.

It looks like your wardrobe is really taking shape, and you're off to a head start on Old Man Winter. Of course, it will be fun to shop throughout the season to see what the sales will bring too. I think that's a great strategy for your dominant season. You've got me thinking with your footwear plan as well. I have recently come to appreciate what a difference a new, current pair of shoes can do for a simple outfit.

I love looking at all of your outfits, and imagining all of the other ones you can make with the clothing items shown, like virtual dress-up! You look wonderful in every single one of these; your proportions are excellent, your colors so flattering and your style true to your Urban Prince persona. It's all so inspiring! Thanks so much for putting in all of the work to share this with us. :)

I have to add that I can really see the benefit of wardrobe building here. You aren't having to scrap a whole lot of things each season. You're buying the best quality you can afford and filling in the gaps where necessary. It helps that your style isn't all over the map too. You have great focus and discipline in buying the things that will serve you the best. You always manage to look smashing, whether you're at a writer's retreat up in the mountains during transitional weather or in a cosmopolitan city in a rainstorm. Kudos!

  • carter replied 10 years ago

It's all fabulous, but that David Meister dress is unbelievable. That's the kind of wow I want to achieve next year with a few select purchases, rather than just the updating/replacing I did this year. Totally awesome!

  • Joyce B replied 10 years ago

Wow, I love all your purchases. You have very good taste and you look fab.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

Suz - I'm blown away by how well you have done with putting together a completely appropriate-for-all-occasions wardrobe and I don't think you have purchased too much at all for the season. You have a lifestyle that includes varied activities and events and therefore need a certain amount of flexibility within your wardrobe as well as some "specialty" items (like the Meister dress for example) that will be called upon as needed.

What strikes me instantly when looking at the pictures is how cohesive your wardrobe has become - how well things work with one another which results in the ability to make more outfits.

I can only hope one day to get to that point! Like Claire, I really see the art and science of building a wardrobe - something I aspire to.

Thanks for being so darned inspiring :)

  • vipanchi replied 10 years ago

This is insightful Suz! Love how they somehow all work together! That I think is the key to buidling a wardrobe! This is really helpful for people who are starting out!Love your choices - they look fab on you!

  • deb replied 10 years ago

Suz, you have added some beautiful pieces to your wardrobe this season and it all works so well together.

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

Wow, and Anna and MaryK did this too? ok, I clearly have not had enough caffeine to process this, but I will be back!

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Well, Claire and Shannon, thank you for the lovely compliments and I could easily say the same of both of you! I feel as if I have learned  so much from watching your WIWs and closet posts --  each of you brings something special to the process. Shannon, you're an intuitive, heart-led shopper whose joy is positively infectious and whose eagerness to try new silhouettes has helped me do the same! And Claire, your discipline and focus has fed my own.

In fact, along with Beth Ann, (and of course Angie herself and Sveta!) I would call you my wardrobe muses. (Which is not to say that I don't also learn tons from others here -- I absolutely do! ) But we have sort of "grown up" together on the forum, if you know what I am saying.

Claire, I think you are right that it is becoming so much easier now that I have figured out my style focus. That took two long years, so I guess I am a very slow learner! But having found it, I do feel that my purchases work better for me. I felt it somewhat this past summer and I am beginning to enjoy it in the autumn also.

I also feel very strongly about adding a couple of current shoes each season. This year I had to add more than usual because of the need for boots. In my climate this is just part of life.

Thank you Joyce, LBD, and Carter. Carter, that dress was such a lucky find. I am itching to wear it but need to figure out the occasion. The quality is just stunning.

  • columbine(erin) replied 10 years ago

Beautiful! I always enjoy seeing your posts because I feel I have similar taste and like the same colors. You have inspired some of my outfits lately. Blue is my favorite color and I'm working on building a wardrobe that functions with a lot of blue as a foundation, partly inspired by your fab outfits.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

Well my goodness Suz - what a lovely thing to say. Thank you :)

FWIW I don't think two years is a long time to be honest. You had a new body to dress and needed to learn how you wanted to dress that new body and what sort of image you wanted to project. That sort of self examination takes time. I've been on YLF almost three years and feel that I'm still not "there".

I couldn't agree more with you about adding a couple pairs of current footwear each season. I have also come to that realization.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Crossposted! Thank you vipanchi, deb, Shevia, and Columbine. Columbine, I have given in to blue -- it's simply meant to be my  main neutral AND colour, LOL!

  • replied 10 years ago

    Awwww! <<<<hugs>>>>

I saw some taupe pinwale corduroy jeans when we were at Mango at the YLF meet-up. I cannot for the life of me find them on the Mango website though. And of course I have no idea if they even ship to Canada, but the moment I saw them I said, "Look everyone, taupe jeans for Suz!" and I took a picture of them with my phone. I got the tags in the picture, but I still can't zoom in far enough to see the item number. I think they might have been more skinny through the leg than you are after.

Would you be opposed to a warmer camel color on your bottom half? That might be easier to find (but it might not go with your cool colors enough).

  • E replied 10 years ago

I love your long & analytical posts Suz! Especially when they're illustrated! :D I'm in awe of how well all of your purchases have worked, and I loved seeing a bunch of your outfits together. They all match, in that they look like they were put together by the same person, but there's lots of variety and interest too. And everything flatters you beautifully! Like Shannon, I don't  2 years is a long time to get to the level that you're at. You're like a style black belt now!

  • Caro in Oz replied 10 years ago

I really enjoyed reading this Suz & I don't think two years is a long time to get a wardrobe together, although I can see how it would seem that way from the inside :)

Shannon hit the nail on the head for me when she wrote: "What strikes me instantly when looking at the pictures is how cohesive your wardrobe has become - how well things work with one another which results in the ability to make more outfits."  I couldn't agree more.

  • Neel replied 10 years ago

Suz, all I can say is, brilliant choices!!

  • karymk replied 10 years ago

Suz if I didn't know different I'd say in No. 5 you were in the Oslo Gardemoen Airport! Where is that?

I love your look. And I miss my hair when it was that short! You look great. I love you in the blouse in number 4, and since I like color on most everybody here, I love the reddish sweater, and the dotted one too.  You manage to make dotted look really chic. I have totally been avoiding dots for fear I'd look, well, dottie.

You keep reminding me to get a white belt.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Thanks, karymk -- that is the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto in #5. I was there to see an exhibit with my family earlier this month. So...not quite as far as Oslo for me. But the light is probably similar.

Thank you also, Neel, Caro, and E. Claire, I have a slight prejudice against cords, which seem to be the only things that come in taupe or even camel these days! I wouldn't say no to the right camel...heck, I wouldn't say no to almost anything at this point! Just gimme some coloured pants, darn it all.....
    :)

  • replied 10 years ago

Don't quite know how to phrase this, but what is so great is that all these outfits have a cohesive, impeccable style that is undeniably your own. Impressive!

  • Sharon replied 10 years ago

Yes, cohesive is definitely the first adjective that came to my mind, immediately before polished and elegant. You have chosen the perfect pieces. I definitely aspire to this type of wardrobe.

It's reassuring that this is something you have achieved over time, but I think you are more insightful about the possibilities of you clothes than I am. The fact that you can identify a purchase as risky up-front and decide whether to buy it with that in mind is streets ahead of me. It usually requires some time sitting in my closet before I come to that realisation.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Sharon, thank you. That is a very meaningful compliment. I do not think I could have done this even a year ago and I CERTAINLY couldn't have done it before YLF.

It is a result of Angie's frequent reminders to dress for the lives we actually live (and put our money in the clothes we'll actually wear.) Of course, there are times when we need to push ourselves a little. MOTG and think you can't wear a dress? Wrong, if it is the right kind of dress, and you casualize it. And so on.

At the same time, a realistic assessment of our needs is so important. If I'm a person who runs cold, I'm going to need warm layers. And if I'm Angie and live in Seattle, sleeveless tops simply won't get a lot of wear. If I walk everywhere, lower heels are a must. If I own a white Persian cat, a wardrobe of black velvet is probably a poor idea. And in my case, if I live in a very casual city where "dressing up" means one's nicer jeans... and I work at home, not in an office ...well, the bronze shoes that would get once a week outings in somebody else's closet will go pretty much unworn, in mine. :)

I don't know if I did this consciously, but I suppose I feel on some level that it's okay to have one or two "wild card" or just for fun purchases. They might turn out to work more easily than you think, after all. Or they might not, but the happiness factor when you wear them will be so high that it's all worthwhile. That's what I thought about these shoes. They would make me happy.

  • Ariadne replied 10 years ago

What Shannon said.  I bow down!

  • Gigi replied 10 years ago

Great job, Suz! You have so much variety in your wardrobe. You are a model for those of us still trying to find out our style. :^) I'm glad you said that it took you a couple of years to get settled style-wise. I've only been doing YLF for maybe three-quarters of a year, so I still have some time left! Whew.

I agree with you on the "wild card" purchases. I bought some leopard print booties with 3.5" heels that I just LOVE! I do have fussy feet, so I can't stand to walk in them for long, but the little bit that I can wear them is worth it. This item is one of the highest "happiness quotient" items in my wardrobe. So I agree that the shoes were a good purchase for you. Sometimes we do have to have something special, even if it doesn't get a lot of wear.

I work at home too, and it was a big change for me to start buying clothes that would work in a more casual environment instead of an office environment. You have shown that a person can be stylish but casual at the same time! Casual doesn't have to mean ratty t-shirt and old jeans. :^)

  • dianne replied 10 years ago

I really enjoy your posts Suz!! I especially appreciate the passion and determination shown in developing and perfecting your wardrobe. You have done an amazing job and it is so much fun to see your photos.

  • Ornella replied 10 years ago

I have no idea what you wrote up there, I'll return to the text when I have the time it deserves. I basically only looked through the photos and each and every one made me so happy. Everything is so perfect, so you, so beautiful, so carefully chosen. This is the wardrobe of someone who knows what she likes, what she wants, what she needs, who will not settle for second best because the patience and waiting produce winners... no, not winners but champions.

Wear these and enjoy them and post them so we can enjoy them with you. Often.

Later I'll be back to actually read your post and it's safe to assume I'll once again learn something valuable from your analysis and the penny will drop with regards to my own wardrobe challenges. Like countless times before.

But for now, thank you for this visual delight.

  • Liz A. replied 10 years ago

Suz, I'm confused by the fact that you don't wear the bronze boots.  Are they dressier than they look in the photo?  It seems you could sub them into plenty of your trouser/jeans outfits from what I see here...

  • Lisa replied 10 years ago

It sounds like you gave your wardrobe a nice refresh this season.  I ended up doing the same thing at NAS this year.  Originally I purchased only one or two items and then the floodgates opened.  Compared to last year, there was so much I liked, so I just went ahead and did an overhaul.  I should do a recap of new purchases, that is a great exercise but I don't think I can remember everything I purchased this year!  Too many new things.  I added a lot of patterns in the spring/summer and then my NAS haul this year.  One nice thing about doing a overhaul or large infusion at one time, it is very easy to coordinate items that will remix well.

  • AviaMariah replied 10 years ago

I'm late to this party but you should be very proud of the work you've done as you look fabulous and perfectly put together in each of these pictures.  Yay!!

  • Makrame replied 10 years ago

I really enjoyed looking at the pictures of all of your fall purchases at once - you made really great choices this year!  As you know, I was inspired by some of your selections - the BR sweatshirt and the Amber Sun are in my closet as well.

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

    *applause*

You got out precisely what you put in, and you're at an enviable place with your style and wardrobe. Well done.

  • Marley replied 10 years ago

Wow Suz!  What a fun read!  Loved hearing about your process and thinking - and I think your purchases very much reflect your style persona and definitely keep outfits interesting and modern!  Love the D.P. boots - and of course, the DVF sweater (since I have it too!)

  • pil replied 10 years ago

Such impressive analytics and the follow through is out of this world. Once again a fabulous array of outfits.

  • Aubergine replied 10 years ago

Wow, those are some seriously gorgeous clothes! I especially love the cranberry and bronze booties. And the navy dress in #1. And the shiny navy sweatshirt.

As someone who's nowhere near that level of wardrobe coherence and organization (and may be constitutionally incapable of it), it's fascinating to read about your thought processes.

  • Catnip replied 10 years ago

Hi Suz.  You are an inspiration to me.  You have exactly the kind of wardrobe I want.  Not too big, but not too small.  Everything works together.  Everything looks wonderful on you.  And everything seems to go with everything else.  What an accomplishment!

I can learn a lot from you, and will be reading your posts with great enthusiasm.  Thanks so much for sharing with us.

  • Joy replied 10 years ago

Suz, your post and thoughts help us all to evaluate our wardrobes and needs. You do an amazing job of staying focused while still having fun and allowing for the occasional wild card. You buy for your real life but remember to include items like your elegant new navy dress. You could probably take an office job tomorrow and have many appropriate outfits already in your closet.
I can see the wisdom of upgrading each season, especially with current footwear. I can't wait to see how you style your pieces this winter.
Be wary of grey jeans. I dearly wanted some, have bought some, and have been rather disappointed because they end up looking unpolished and dirty even when they are clean and unstained. In theory they seemed a perfect addition for a cohesive wardrobe. In practice, not so much. If you find some good ones, please let me know.

  • Lantana replied 10 years ago

I find your analysis very helpful Suz, in particular to see the nature of the items bought some time ago that you continue to incorporate into today's outfits. Are they your classics?
