My husband AND my daughter love my boyfriend: what should I DO?

Oy, vey, the trouble I am in!

Taking a cue from MaryK, who alerted us to a Gap sale on the weekend, I jumped on the sexy boyfriend bandwagon and ordered 2 pair: one size up from usual, and 2 sizes up from usual.

They came today.

I put them on.

Husband came in. Gave me the once over. And announced: Wow! THOSE ARE GREAT!!

Meanwhile, my daughter was examining them. I had also ordered jeans for her, but hers didn't fit. While I was trying on one size of the sexy BFs, she grabbed the other and pulled them on.

"Mum, can I keep these?" she said.

YLF friends, help me out here, please. Will my daughter steal my boyfriend? Should I let her?

Is my husband mad? Because I must admit, figure flattering on short-legged moi, these jeans are NOT.

Up for consideration: 2 pairs of sexy boyfriends. Please note, both have dropped crotch and hang on my hips, both are removable without undoing the zip. The 4s are snugger on the bottom.

1-3: Sexy BF, 2 sizes up from my regular.
4: unrolled. They actually fit a bit like painter pants I had in the 70s!!
5-7: 1 size up from normal

Also showing a cable knit sweater, super sale deal on this one - came to $12.99 - and I am keeping because I love the colour.

My questions: should I keep either of the boyfriends? If so, which one? Or should I just stick with my old boyfriend, the slouchy skinny from BR? (Final pic) Those fit probably a bit more like the True Religion ones Angie linked to in her blog post. They do hang on my hips and are loose in the bum but are more narrow and more tapered in the legs overall. The denim is very heavy duty, not as soft and slouchy as the Gap's.

Thank you for your thoughts - and apologies for my mussed hair/ lack of makeup today.

The first ones BY FAR! They look great on you!

  • texstyle replied 11 years ago

I like the first ones and the ones you already have. Different purposes I'd say. Love that sweater on you too!

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

I'm totally with Ceit on this one - that first pair is FAB on you! And your hubby is not alone - mine loves my BF's as well!

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

Phew, Shannon, I was beginning to think my hubby was a bit kinky...but I did tell him that yours for sure would love anything with "sexy" in the name, LOL, so he wouldn't be completely alone on the husband-liking-the-boyfriend thing.

NB: He actually saw me in the smaller size and liked those and was doubtful the bigger size would be good. But he didn't see those on.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

I actually bought two sizes and kept two sizes - I have my regular size, which I then hacked two inches off the bottom so that the roll would not be so thick. And then I have two sizes up which I have not cut anything off the bottom and am planning to wear full length with boots and my Docs once the cool weather arrives.

I asked my hubby why he thought they were kinda sexy and his answer was interesting "because it really does look like you are wearing my pants which would be kinda sweet, don't you think?"

  • replied 11 years ago

    I love the first pair!

  • Scarlet replied 11 years ago

Keep the first ones and the last ones if you wear jeans often. They are both great but fit really differently. Maybe ask hubby IRL about the sizing on the Gap jeans since he was so enthusiastic :) That sweater is a really pretty color.

Suz, the boyfriend STAYS and I love, love, love #1-3. I missed the thread you mentioned, but these are sensational. Do you have a link or style #, Suz, because I love this wash on you and some I saw in store seemed to be darker. I prefer yours and plan to go to South Coast Plaza tomorrow. You've sold me and I hope you're not too jealous that I'm in love with your new BF.

When you say "the 4s are snugger on the bottom," are you talking about the two-sizes up pair or the one-size up pair?

p.s. Whose light-blue shirt is that? It's cute, too. ;)

  • Diana replied 11 years ago

I like both sizes, actually. I think it just depends on your baggy sweet spot. Wear them around a bit and see how much they stretch before you decide though - mine stretch a lot.

my advice would be keep the one you like more, and give the other one to your daughter, and then you can always steal them back from her!

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

Vicki, I am happy to share my boyfriend. Luckily, he has many clones.

They are Gap sexy boyfriends in "citrine" wash. http://www.gapcanada.ca/browse.....=243726003

Pics 1-3 are size 6 which is 2 sizes up from my normal in Gap jeans (or most Gap jeans...I actually wear a 00 in the Long and Leans).

So the 4s are one size up (they are the second pair). You can mostly see it in the bum. Recall, however, that I carry my weight in the rear. So your mileage may vary.

  • Aziraphale replied 11 years ago

Your husband and your daughter can't both be wrong. I think they look great! I'd go for the extra-slouchy two-sizes-up-from-normal ones. If you feel they shorten your legs, you could try wearing then with lower vamp, higher-heeled shoes.

FWIW, whenever my husband is sufficiently impressed with a garment that he is moved to comment, I sit up and listen. What woman doesn't want her husband to think she looks sexy?

  • Laura replied 11 years ago

Go for the super slouch - 2 sizes up. Both sizes look good but seeing you in that final pic, I'd say the first pair gives you a whole different look. Gorgeous on you!

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

Well, 2 sizes up seems to be winning...

the advantage of that is I could give the 4s to my daughter. She is too small to wear the 6s, being 2 inches shorter and at least 10 pounds lighter.

  • citygirldc replied 11 years ago

Suz - Funny thing was that size 4p was too tight on me but size 6p was baggy so I kept the size 6. I usually wear size 4 petite pants/jeans or size 2 regulars. I have more hips though.

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

Yeah - we don't have petites here, Citygirl. So it's regulars, whatever our height. Which means we are same size!

  • CocoLion replied 11 years ago

They are equally flattering! However, I vote for 2 sizes up as the 1 size up pair are more like the ones you already have. It's nice to have a range of fits.

  • Irene replied 11 years ago

I think I like the last pair best, but you can pull off the first pair too. I'm jealous of your good posture, you really stand straight and proud! I'm just not a fan of the boyfriend silouette on anyone, especially since it kinda shortens the legs... I don't know, but I think I'm all on my own here so... lol

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

Thanks, Lemonade. My mother would be proud; she drilled good posture into me.

And I agree with you that the BF shortens the legs, something I definitely do at my own risk, given how short they already are!

BTW, you are by no means on your own. I think lots of people will dislike this look.

I should clarify - I already own the last pair. And I'm not giving those ones up; they're a great silhouette. I was just curious as to whether I should keep either of the Gaps.

  • rae replied 11 years ago

I'm just adding to the concensus, it seems - first pair, 2 sizes up, all the way! The extra bagginess makes it a LOOK. Love it. DD can have the "younger man" (a.k.a. the smaller size). ;)

  • Jem replied 11 years ago

You look amazing in all of them, but I really love the first pair! I'm really going to have to try a pair 2 sizes up. When I got mine from ebay, my husband asked why they were called "boyfriend" jeans and I explained it to him. Then he said, "I thought it was because the boyfriend/husband would like the easier access"... lol Men... <rolls eyes>

  • Jenniferblue replied 11 years ago

What was the question? Is there a question? You look fab in all the pictures. You can't
    go wrong. Sooooooo cute.

  • morethanbeige replied 11 years ago

Oh, Suz, thanks for sharing your boyfriends with us! I really like the first pair on you. I think you so pull off this look. The extra baggy has such an effect. It's a real look and it's fab on you.

  • replied 11 years ago

I like the smaller pair (sorry, but they are SO flattering) and that could save you money if you share with DD. Those are the ones are the ones DH saw on you and liked, right? However, they might be too similar to the ones you already own to keep them.

I LOVE the mulberry sweater on you. A lot!

  • Vicki replied 11 years ago

Thanks for the link, Suz. It really helped having the name "citrine" for the color. GAP is holding two pairs for me (2 and 4) and I probably should have had them hold a 6, too. We'll see if I have as much luck as you have had here. As Rae and the others said, the 6 makes it "a look." Loving Jem's hubby's comment! That's too funny.

Oh, forgot to tell you in my first post that I love your Report booties with this outfit.

  • catgirl replied 11 years ago

The first pair, hands down. Too funny about your daughter and husband!

  • Mona replied 11 years ago

I think first pair was made for you. You look incredibly hip and pretty in this silhouette. Yay!!!!!!! for report booties also. I also ordered two pairs of these BF's but still waiting for them.

  • replied 11 years ago

If this wasn't the YLF forum I would totally think this was a love triangle question!!! I have got to get yall's lingo down...... ;)

  • krishnidoux replied 11 years ago

Jumping in late - as usual! You look absolutely gorgeous in Boyfried jeans, and your choice of footwear is right on.

I personally prefer the all-the-way slouch from the first pair on you.
Which one are you wearing in 10? It looks great.

I also got myself a pair of Gap Sexy BF "1969", a size up from what I usually fit. I love them! Been wearing them all the time lately.

  • Jjsloane replied 11 years ago

I love both - they give you different looks (both you are ROCKING) Can I say you are the first to look amazing in the rear view in the super slouchy pair. No wonder your hubby gave them the thumbs up. Tell DD "get your own" (kidding - you can share? mine is 4 so not there yet but my son and I are almost the same shoe size)

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

    Thanks, all...

Mona, can't wait to see yours! They will arrive soon, I predict!

Krish, in photo 10 I am wearing the Banana Republic slouchy skinny from their Heritage collection, purchased two winters ago just after my weight loss. I actually love those jeans; they are super fun. Snugger than the Gap sexy boyfriends, but still baggy in places. They were a lucky sale find. But I admit I hesitate to wear them sometimes because of the obvious distressing. It has to be the right environment.

Claire, you are right - it could be money-saving to share with DD - except I'm betting she will never take them off...

  • Freckles replied 11 years ago

Suz how do you feel about the look on you? Do you really love it or just like it as it is a new look?

Adore your new sweater, the colour is fantastic.

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

Here is what I feel: it is NOT figure flattering. I truly understand that. Especially on a short-legged, high waisted person like me.

On the other hand, it is SUPER comfortable, and has an ease and je ne sais quoi that I love. I have always enjoyed loose trousers of all kinds, and especially jeans.

Jeans fit my lifestyle better than any other article of clothing, hands down, so I feel it is fair for me to purchase them in whatever styles tickle my fancy. Given that I wear the darn things so often, I don't want to confine myself to one cut or style or colour; I want a variety.

I have worn baggy jeans over the years in a number of incarnations. I quite like these ones for their taper. Oddly, I like the look with cuffs more than without; I think that is because cuffing creates a sharper taper, and it is the taper that seems to make it wearable for me. So, if I wear with boots, I'll wear with my Doc Marcies, cuffed, rather than rolled down all the way as in photo 4. I don't care for that look as much at all, and if I want full length, I will go with my BR boyfriends or my straight legs or other skinnies or Long and Leans.

Not sure if that answers your question, Freckles, but thank you for helping me think it through. It's not so much loving the LOOK as loving the FEEL. They evoke something for me. I love menswear and tomboy and androgynous style of all kinds. So....

  • Gaylene replied 11 years ago

From someone who isn't on the boyfriend bandwagon, I actually like the first pair on you. I think the reason I like them better is because the bagginess looks deliberate. The smaller pair looks like you are not so comfortable with the baggy look and are trying to hedge your bets. So, go all the way baggy is my vote.

And that sweater is fantastic. Such a pretty color!

  • Freckles replied 11 years ago

Thank you Suz, you answered what I was asking but didn't write down in the question.

Number one all the way then...

  • replied 11 years ago

    Love 2 sizes up.

  • Jaime replied 11 years ago

Ok, I started getting confused reading the comments, but I think I am with the overwhelming consensus that says the pair in the first 3 pictures are a MUST KEEP! I love that your daughter wants your jeans though. My daughters want everything I wear - luckily nothing fits 7 year olds.

  • Jonesy replied 11 years ago

I love the baggier pair and I disagree with you: I actually think they are very figure flattering!! You look fab! Let your daughter have the smaller BF :). Hubby has a good eye.

  • nancylee replied 11 years ago

My eye is still adjusting to the BF look, so these all look great to me. Sounds like you've gotten a lot of good advice here. I'd say you win whichever one you keep, but the baggier pair seems to elicit more love. :)

  • Marley replied 11 years ago

I would go all the way with the boyfriend in pics 1 - 3. ;-)

  • MNsara replied 11 years ago

Another vote to keep the bigger pair (pics 1-3) because they are very different from your original pair.

I think I saw that your Citrine style is 100% cotton, so maybe stretching during wear won't be an issue.

Too cute about your DD and DH! How nice to have supporters :-)

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

Thanks, Marley - you made my day with that!

I am pretty sure these won't stretch out. They are so baggy that I can't imagine what would be pressuring them to stretch! The only place there is any snugness is on the calf.

Thanks, everyone! I think my solution is to keep BOTH pairs. I'll wear the bigger ones, but DD can have the 4s...and if I can ever sneak them off her, I can wear those, too.

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

2 sizes up! KILLER. Your hubs can live in peace with your BF. What a solid relationship you have :)
