Navel grazing (and no, it's not a midriff baring top!)

I've been on a hunt for some new jeans.  I definitely needed white to replace old white skinnies, and I also retired my wide leg blue jeans because I wasn't reaching for them.

While I always love to have at least one trendier jean in my collection to update my look, the jeans I consistently wear the most are slim boyfriend style or what I'd call boyfriend adjacent jeans, i.e. jeans with some but not too much  looseness in the thigh area (whether they taper or are more straight on the calves). Ideally, the rise should be what I'd call medium-high, which for me is around the belly-button. And they should have a bit of "slouch" to them.

This is both for comfort and for flattery. While in theory, a higher rise ought to be best for me (I'm relatively short legged), and even more so, because I have a long rise, in practice, a super high rise won't work, because I'm also short waisted, and just plain short. So some high rise styles cut off my breath and others give me a wedgie. Can't win!

Anyway. Baggy is the thing these days, right? But reined in baggy with a bit of structure is less overwhelming on me. So I decided to try these Old Navy slouchy straights in white. I love them! They are generously sized, loose and comfy, not at all see-through, and very easy to wear. I might spring for a pair in a different wash as well.

Meanwhile, Holt's had a big sale so I took the opportunity to pick up a pair of darker wash Citizens of Humanity Emerson's in my size. I already own one pair, a size up, bought when my weight was up a bit -- I still love them and wear them, but they are super baggy. This pair is more of a true slim BF style, giving me options. Trying to decided if I want to shorten them.

Citizens are the best fitting brand for me, and one reason is that their front and back rises are scaled in a way that works for my body. I can wear their low rise style (when most low rise styles would be indecent on me); I can wear their mid-rise styles; I can even wear (some) of their high rise styles if I get the sizing right.

Both these jeans have a rise that comes more or less to my belly button, which on me is considerably below my natural waist. Where on your body do you like your jeans to sit and what type of a rise works best to get the fit and feel you like?

Major score Suz! Two pairs of jeans that look amazing on you!
I’ve often thought I should give old navy a shot since I’ve seen great looking jeans at affordable price points.
The Gaps curvy fits seem to be my best fitting jeans, and I like my rises high to accommodate my long rise. It’s been a veritable jean buffet for me lately and I’m taking full advantage of it!

  • Style Fan replied 1 year ago

Great jeans, Suz!  I am a fan of Citizens too.  They are an excellent fit for me.  High rises look good on me, but I prefer the rise to my belly button for comfort.

  • Lana replied 1 year ago

Love them both!  Hard to find white jeans that look and feel good. We are built the same Suz - short waisted (waist is almost under my bustline), long rise, and shortish legs. I’m 5’6”, how tall are you?

I like med high rise, because too high and it accentuates the belly, and too low and then there’s muffin top.  I’ll try these you mentioned.  I have been liking democracy wit and wisdom absolution jeans lately. The ones I wear the most at at my belly button.

  • Sal replied 1 year ago

These are both great Suz - awesome fit.

I can wear anything from mid to high rise. Low rise was awful on me as I used to get muffin top. My fit issue is my calves which meant skinnies always were pulled down from the friction. I like slim straight fits too the best. Levis are a good fit on me, premium US denim is very expensive here and not that widely available. Paige, Mother, COH are all brands I would like to try.

  • Janet replied 1 year ago

Those look great, Suz! like my COH Emerson’s but I really need to get them taken in in the waist— they fall down a bit too much unless I wear a belt. I have last year’s ON boyfriend jeans in two washes including white, but I’ve been self-conscious to wear the white while my weight is up. They were super inexpensive and the fit is surprisingly good. I wore the blue ones a lot on my road trip, when I wasn’t wearing hiking pants.

Lana, you’re close to my stats — I’m 5’7” and short in the torso, but my legs are long for my height and my rise is short.

I like a mid-rise, meaning coming up to my navel or just under it, but that typically measures about 9-9.5” in front, and I know that’s not very “mid” for some people. Rises over 10.5” are really hard for me to wear — they either have a fitted waist and come up too high on my body (especially deadly with a large bust and wide hips), or they’re looser in the waistband and result in a lot of extra fabric below my inseam (the dreaded polterwang). I like a lower rise because it visually lengthens my super short torso and helps me look a little less busty, plus I can actually sometimes tuck a shirt in. I cannot do a tuck with a high rise — it looks like my boobs are sitting on my waistband, LOL.

My most recent successful brands are AG, COH, Pilcro, DL1961, and 7FAMK. Some have a higher waist than I would prefer, but that’s all that was available in recent years — I just have to wear the right kind of tops that don’t need to be tucked or even semi-tucked.

  • rachylou replied 1 year ago

I really like high rise even though I’m short waisted, but the reality is there aren’t many for sale where I am. Mostly mid rise.

  • Suz replied 1 year ago

Rachy, that's so interesting! Higher rises are the norm. here these days -- it was impossible to find a mid rise or a low rise for a few years, though as Janet noted, they seem to be coming back now.

Janet, it's great that we may get more variety for a while with rises. Let's hope that happens, at least! My sized up Emerson's definitely need a belt, too, and that's an obstacle to wearing them sometimes, which is why I wanted a pair that didn't need the "hitch."

Sal, I have the same problem with skinnies that have a lot of stretch. I had to wear a belt and even then they would pull down...at least that happened in the early years of skinnies, when rises were low. Eventually I found a few styles that worked much better, especially as rises got higher. (They weren't in such danger of being tugged down, then, ha!)

Lana, I'm only 5'4" (and that's being generous -- truth is, I'm probably closer to 5'3.5"). My waist isn't quite at my bust, and my bust is smaller (so that helps disguise the short waist) but it's definitely an issue -- often the stance of jackets is in the wrong place and a petite would work better. But I can't wear petite pants because the rise is too short. That means I need to hem every pair of pants unless they are a style that I roll or unless they come "cropped" which is usually ankle length on me.

Really, when I think of how unique we are it's a wonder anything ever fits anyone.

StyleFan -- what I like about Citizens beside the fit is that they are really long lasting in my closet (considering the amount of wear they get). Worth the money in the long run.

Merwoman, I'm amazed you go for a curvy fit because you are so slender! That is fascinating! I'd love to know what makes it work better for you, in your view.

Hi Suz, I tried on my only pair of jeans (got rid of 2 others in the past couple of years because I had lost weight and they were too loose) for you this morning to see! They are summer or early autumn/late spring jeans really, it is late autumn now and too cold!
These are the white or “milk”ones I bought in November to go with my lovely new embroidered jacket.
They come exactly to my navel. The big silver button actually sits right over my belly button.
I think that was luck that they fit so well at the front! They are a bit loose at the back waist due to my sway back. I haven’t had them altered at this stage, just living with it. It is good to have them be comfortable as I had to get rid of my nice NYDJ ones as they sort of dug in at the waist. Maybe those were too high in the rise? Most jeans are not comfortable on me which is yet another reason I like my new white ones. I don’t pay any attention to whether they are straight or slim or what-have-you. I would just call yours straight? Yours both look excellent.
Here is a pic of me in them late 2021 when I was choosing the size of T-shirt. I ended up in a size down from this one.

Ah yes ,jeans shopping,up there with swimwear shopping in my book. You seem to have nailed your fit though, these look terrific on you.

  • Staysfit replied 1 year ago

Great find Suz!  I dread jeans shopping because my favorite go to, J Brand Jeans, are no longer available except in limited style options on theTheory website; they have not yet carried the longer inseam, higher rise Carolinas or Runways which fit me perfectly.

Feel free to skip this navel gazing rant!  Jeans shopping is difficult for me because tall sizes are often too large, and regular sizes too short.  (Most tall sizes start one size larger than I fit ie. Size 6, instead of Size 4)  My legs are proportionally short for my height (by~ 4 inches!).  Nevertheless, since I am tall, my legs are not short. Inseam length to my ankle (best cropped length) is 30-32 inches (most standard sized crops are 27-28”) and full inseam length is 34 inches (without shoes) so ideally I need longer than 34 for full length jeans or they look odd, more like 35-36” depending on the shoes. I am regular waisted however I can look strangely short waisted in the wrong proportions because of my long rise. Conversely, my torso/waist can also look deceptively long because of my high rise.  A rise between10.5”to 12” fits below my belly button and reads as mid rise on my body.  Rises of 9.5” to 10.5 can appear low rise on me depending on the cut. I cannot wear a rise below 9.5 as it would be indecently low and either cause muffin top or be sliding down and in need of a belt which would then cause the muffin top if it was tight enough to hold up the jeans!  :-)  I need a fit that is cut straight through the hips and thighs, not curvy, since I am not particularly curvy, and loose flared styles are not my best look so I would need something fairly sleek but not tight…..I think my heart is starting to race!  I hope my current supply of jeans lasts forever, which they will not….oh my….crawls off to hide under covers and go back to sleep…..

  • Angie replied 1 year ago

KILLER new jeans, Suz! I'm loving their fluidly tailored fits - not too slouchy or tight. They look elegantly relaxed, on trend, and very comfy.  I'll make them top picks :)

Isn't it great to have go-to brands for jeans - and COH is yours - wave to Gryffin! Milk it.

    My go-to jeans brands are:

    • Frame
    • Everlane
    • G-Star
    • Pilcro
I like my waistband just below or on my belly button.

  • Joy replied 1 year ago

I am short but take regular sizes in jeans and other pants.  The high rise trend has never been high on my body, even those that are supposed to be ultrahigh seldom cover my naval.  Recently I have lost 1-2 pounds and everything looks too big.  Most pants hang on my hip bones and could easily fall down.  I have some of the same problems as Staysfit but am shorter.  My best “jeans” are old pull on versions of EF and NYDJs. They are straight cuts or joggers but are not skinny on me.  Full lengths are hard to find these days.  Often I need them for warmth like today with over 4 inches of new snow and it is still coming down.

  • Suz replied 1 year ago

Jenni! Thank you for posting your jeans and coral outfit! I remember that purchase and these are great on you. When I was in my 20s, I almost never wore jeans simply because I found them so hard to fit. Weirdly, it became easier as I got older, I think because my proportions changed and also because options proliferated. But even with all the options, it's still hard to get a good fit and why bother trying if there are other articles of clothing that serve the purpose? In my case, jeans have become a wardrobe essential but if I could not find any to fit at all, I wouldn't bother!

Staysfit, I hear you! It sounds like what Angie would call a "mare" to find jeans! Those are significant fit challenges for sure. And yet you look amazing in jeans — when you do get a fit they look like they were made for you and you alone to wear! I hope you find increased options soon.

Cardiff Girl -- thanks! I have seen you in some pretty great jeans so you must be doing something right. :)

Angie, interesting that so many of us like the jeans to fit around the belly-button but each of us. needs a different rise height to make that happen. The 9.5" to 10" rise that is almost indecently low on Staysfit is medium high (belly button height) on me and the 7 inch rise that feels fab to some Fabbers threatens a malfunction on me....

Joy, snow!! Yikes! It's been really cold here, but snow is a step too far. Brrr!!! I have been thinking about your and the need for pull on styles because I've been noticing a lot more pants available with pull on waists and it is so mainstream at the moment. Hopefully you can find pants (if not jeans) in those styles over the next few years that will make it easier to get dressed. As someone with calves that overfill skinnies, I've always loved the way they fall looser on your slim calves!

  • Style Fan replied 1 year ago

Suz, I find COH and Frame last the longest of all my jeans.  Unfortunately, the Frame looks excellent but does not fit me that well.  I love jeans, but finding the right pair is like treasure hunting.

  • Jaime replied 1 year ago

Very interesting and an excellent point that we are all built so differently that it is amazing that we can find anything that fits off the rack. I am pretty proportionate on a short frame vertically, but horizontally my waist is disproportionately large compared to my hips and legs. So a comfortable high waist has been a challenge. My best versions are COH but my all time best fits are boyfriend style. Mid waists often sit high on me due to my height. Regardless of challenges, you look fab in your new jeans!

  • Brooklyn replied 1 year ago

These look great Suz. You should stock up on well fitting jeans when you find them.

I like a high rise to my waist in wide legged pants but a little lower in jeans (around the navel) because of the stiffness. I’m long in the rise but my main problem is having a relatively small waist to larger hips and even larger thighs. When jeans fit my waist they are inevitably too snug on my thighs. I have to size up 2 or 3 sizes to get a relaxed fit on my thighs and then the waist is too big. Altering the waist isn’t always successful. You can end up with pooching thing happening at the front upper hip.

I don’t think COH jeans are readily available here. Otherwise I’d give them a try.

  • Angie replied 1 year ago

Suz, you are right. People seem to like their waistbands in a similar position on the waist, but it can take anything from 8 to 15 inches to create it! Fabric and silhouette also play a role.

I have a regular length waist, and a shorter rise. I like a 10 inch rise - although 9 and 11 can be good too. I have soft baggy pants with a low crotch point that are even longer in the rise.

Brooklyn, have you tried curvy fits?

  • DonnaF replied 1 year ago

So great that you found a brand that works for you as well as ON jeans! My biggest fit issue by far is (are?) horizontal folds in the back below the seat in addition to back sides that go up too far. Pancake behind reporting in. A bit of spandex in the jeans seems to help although I prefer 100% cotton.

If anyone can suggest jeans and pants that are cut shallower in back, I'm all ears! My best jeans are high waisted ones because they don't slide down as much to make the back side wrinkling worse. I try not to view my back side, but often the wrinkling can be seen in how the front looks.

  • LJP replied 1 year ago

Fascinating to read the dramatic differences in rise measurements and how they fit different bodies . I admit to never having measured mine and have no idea what I should be looking for when I do shop . I love jeans . I have the same Old Navy in white as in your pic above - haven’t tried them on yet this spring . I read an interesting post on white jeans elsewhere on the internet and it stressed that sizing up is the only way to go ( in terms of getting an elegant fit that accounts for the problems that white fabric of any kind can bring ) . I love the COH’s on you - they look great .

  • SarahD8 replied 1 year ago

Great jeans, Suz! Both pairs look so nice on you.

I like my jeans to hit just below my navel and just at the top of my hipbones, which is the same place on my short torso. I can achieve that with a rise of 7.5” in skinnies or 8-8.5” in more fluid fits. Yes, for real! I’m not sure if that spot is my waist, strictly speaking — but my torso is very straight.

  • Angie replied 1 year ago

LJP, I mentioned that in a 2014 post - #4 - and it bears repeating. Thank you for bringing that up!

I've sized up on white jeans too. These, actually:

  • cat2 replied 1 year ago

Long waisted pear reporting in. I like jeans to fall at my actual waist, and have found pairs I like from Kut from the Cloth, Code Bleu and NYDJ.

  • anne replied 1 year ago

I have a long rise and a long waist, and like jeans to fit my actual waist (though I have others that don't)
Here's me in the Levi ribcage which is apparently 12 inch rise.

  • lyn67 replied 1 year ago

They look wonderful, and reading your description, these would be my first choice  kind of jeans (a couple of size up, of course:-)) but so very hard to find them in my neck of the woods!

DonnaF-  pancake jeans for me, too!:-))

  • Bijou replied 1 year ago

These jeans are brilliant on you and a great update. On me, I prefer a mid rise or high rise. Low rises do not appeal to me, as I have seen too much underwear or worse when others bend over or sit down and just like to feel secure that no wardrobe malfunctions will occur. I am happy to be conservative in my denim and don’t look for it to add a trendy element to my style.

  • replied 1 year ago

Both look great! My trouble with rises is having a high enough back rise. Most pants don't seem to have more than 3inch difference between front and back, but I need 5 :(

  • RobinF replied 1 year ago

Great jeans! Comfortable, well-fitting jeans are worth every penny!

I am short (5'2") with a thick waist so have to size up for the waist and then the hips and thighs are often quite loose. That is why the looser legs mostly don't work on me - they end up just looking too big. I prefer pants to hit at my waist which is an inch or so above my belly button. For me that is about 9-1/2" rise. Petite pants don't really work for me because they are too tight in the waist so I always have to hem my pants. I love the raw hem trend - hope it sticks around. But thank goodness I also know how to sew.

I agree with Jaime that with so many different body types it is amazing we can find jeans that fit!

  • anne replied 1 year ago

Here I am with my other high rise (12inch).I am 163cm tall or 5'4".
