Or startle you, like a shot of lemon-lime

So....I love yellows and golds. A lot of the walls in our home are painted various shades of gold and yellow and ochre, and we also have some gold soft furnishings. My first childhood bedroom was yellow (at my insistence). Yellow is a colour that energizes me.

But yellow is also (after orange) typically my *least* flattering colour. I got a soft printed butter yellow shirt a couple of summers ago to try. I valiantly tried to wear it. But it made me unhappy. So after one season , I let it go.

However, I noted here once that I quite like the very bright yellow of the safety vest I wear on my bike.

Well, guess what? A little fashion bird suggested I might like to try an on sale sweater at BR in similar tone. Why not, I thought. It is returnable.

Here it is. My wildest wild card yet!

My review of this sweater: It is very soft -- merino/ cotton blend. Lovely to wear! Almost feels like cashmere! The fit is slightlyl smaller than most BR items. I normally wear XS at BR but I got S and I would not have wanted it any tighter -- the shoulders on this are perfect. It is a slightly cropped length but not overly so. So if you are thinking of ordering -- and the sweater comes in many colours -- you might want to size up from your usual BR size.  ETA: The sizing is also inconsistent. I got this sweater in navy also because a navy crewneck is an essential for me. It is a full inch longer than the citron sweater and slightly looser in the shoulders also, though no wider in the torso from what I can tell.

The lighting is not great here. They call the colour Bright Pistachio Green, but it is more like a sour citron. There is an underlying coolness or acidity to it.

I feel as if I could risk adding more of this colour to my closet -- what think you?  The trouble will be finding the right version. It can't be too warm or it won't work. And I can't go pastel at all. Has to be a bit shocking, I think.

Thank you, Angie, for the recommendation!

Me thinks you've got a winner there SUZ, that particular yellow colour looks fab and you shine in it. Works beautifully with those window pane pants. Love the white belt and boots compliment with it all too.

  • Cookie replied 3 weeks ago

I love it with those trousers! And it brings out the pink in your complexion in a nice way.

  • LJP replied 3 weeks ago

Not so startling at all - I really like it for you and agree with Dee and Cookie.  Merino and cotton is an interesting blend - off to check out this sweater and see what colours are offered....

  • Irina replied 3 weeks ago

I think this shade of yellow is spot on for you. Beautiful!
Not a common color but if you see anything in it, I say, yes, you absolutely should go for it.

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 3 weeks ago

I think it looks very good. Not as harmonious as your usual colors, but you wear it surprisingly well! It will look really great with navy and your whites, too.
I feel like I wear a lot of colors in this category--not my best, but okay, and they make me happy! So thumbs up from me.
Oh, and this is my favorite cycling jacket. I haven't duplicated the color in my streetwear yet, though. haha!

LOVE THIS CHANGE ON YOU, Suz! Thanks for the open mind.

It's not a warm yellow. It has its cool and warm integrity, which is why I suggested it. I can wear it too. It's brighter in my pic because that's a night time photo under bright artificial light.

AND, as I always say - you cannot see colours in isolation. Gorgeous with the greys and silver here. Fab with your blues and whites. And cranberry and lilac :)

I wear citron with burgundy too.

    * the best part about this pullover is the FABRIC. It's a cotton-wool blend. Feels glorious against the skin because of the high cotton content. Great for people who are sensitive to wool.

Thanks, all. Yes, Sharan -- maybe not my most harmonious (the soft orchid colour they offer would have been that) but I would have felt less happy in that more muted tone. Unfortunately their red looked too warm for me, otherwise I might have gone with that.

I'm glad it's winning some yays -- thank you!

I did not know you love yellow Suz, and how delightful to finally find a yellow that works and that twins with Angie! You look fab!

  • JAileen replied 3 weeks ago

It looks great on you!  Pistachios come in many shades.  My husband wears this color when he walks Bob Barker at night.  I have a little mustard yellow.  I like it with both blue and grey.

  • Carol replied 3 weeks ago

It is a great color! It reminds me of origami paper--those sets always had a million unusual colors. I say more of this color/family, sure. Love it with the metallic belt!

  • Suz replied 3 weeks ago

JAileen, between white Bob Barker and the yellow jacket your DH wears, he should be plenty visible. I wear white coats and my yellow reflective vests when I walk here at night -- it is very dark on my street!

Thank you, Jaime. It's nice to have a change. My palette is quite restricted and deliberately so but when my preferred cool midtones to medium brights are not available, I can start to feel bored with my neutrals, as much as I love them.

Thanks, Angie -- glad you encouraged me to try it! It will be a jolt of sunshine during our grey winter. Especially fun with my white coat, I think. But also with the lilac wool coat. And definitely with my blues and greys as well!

Sharan, that's a great cycling jacket!

Merino and cotton is indeed a very unusual blend -- I don't think I have ever owned anything like this, and I am surprised at how nice it is. Time will tell about the pilling quotient. But I think the cotton may help reduce pilling and anyway, merino doesn't pill that much to begin with as a rule.

  • Irina replied 3 weeks ago

Suz, there is a matching triangle scarf available. Just saying :)

  • Angie replied 3 weeks ago

Suz and Irina, I have the matching citron triangle scarf and beanie! Same gorgeous fabric :)

    Highly recommend them.

  • Irina replied 3 weeks ago

I thought you might, Angie! :)

How fun to see you in yellow and I support this!!  Why not?  To me this is a piece you will have in the wardrobe for a long time but not necessarily wear it lots every month.  But what a refreshing piece to have!!

Funnily enough the piece that fills that spot for me is very different - it's this wrap shirt.  It's different and new and whilst I don't think it is my best colour, I like it for the change.

  • Suz replied 2 weeks ago

Oh my!! LOVE the scarf. The beanie might be a bit tricky -- but I could try it!! When the sale resumes, I'm going to give this a go. Thank you, Irina

Carol, you are so right. Origami packets often have really unexpected colours in them. Japanese design brilliance!

Sal, that shirt is so distinctive and I can see it working in unexpected ways in your closet. I can absolutely see why you were drawn to it!

Love the new sweater with your brown plaid pants! It’s a great shot of color for your winter wardrobe. This is one of the colors I call the weirdy yellow greens and I love them. I have a similar color in a sweater, as well as a muffler, gloves (two pairs!), and a small bag.

Your sweater will play wonderfully with your blues and creams, and it would also be a great partner to both cool and warm shades of olive.

  • Brooklyn replied 2 weeks ago

Wow! It looks fantastic on you. I think you look great in cool yellows like lemon and neon yellow. And neons look so cool and modern with colours like grey and navy. You are set.

Aside: I always think it’s strange when people say there are some colours that they can’t wear, when there are cool and warm versions of every colour. I think it’s just a matter of finding “your” version of a colour. This is you :)

  • Janet replied 2 weeks ago

That’s a great piece, Suz! Congrats for trying and enjoying something outside of your norm.

I enjoy yellow — looking at it, decorating with it — but it is definitely not my best color either. I looked at this yellow color in the first photo below a few months ago, and it’s not horrible, but it’s not my best. If I have a bit of a tan, a pale not-too-warm buttery color can work, but really I’m best off using it as an accent. Mostly I just don’t bother.

That said, I do sometimes venture into colors that aren’t strictly my best. I bought a cute coral tee shirt yesterday from a local Portuguese designer — there was a beautiful saturated green that would have been really nice on me, but my size wasn’t available, and the coral spoke to me. It’s perhaps just slightly more pink than this sample below.

  • RobinF replied 2 weeks ago

What a great sweater and I love that color for you! I bet you will find lots of ways to wear it.

  • Suz replied 2 weeks ago

Robin, thanks! I think I will indeed find lots of ways to wear.

Janet, can't wait to see you in coral! Sometimes it's good to venture out of our usual. In this case, it will be a momento of your amazing trip! Re the yellow top you show -- yes, it looks ok, you can wear it...and could wear in combo with blues etc. -- but I'm betting there would be a better yellow for you out there.

I guess the trouble with moving out of our usual zone is that with the colours that most easily suit us, we can move up and down the tonal scale quite easily and it will pretty much always work. Whereas with those that are less flattering, we have to experiment to find just the *right* version, as Brooklyn says, and it's not always available.

Thanks, Brooklyn -- you are queen of colour and getting the right one, so your comments mean a lot!

  • Lisa replied 2 weeks ago

Yes, add more of this color to your wardrobe. It is lovely on you! This is definitely your shade of yellow!

  • lyn67 replied 2 weeks ago

I think this shade is trully fab with your hair and now you'll have to try it to all your fab lighter jeans and silver items in your wardrobe!

  • Runcarla replied 2 weeks ago

Bravo!  This variant works great.  Now get socks to match!

  • Suz replied 2 weeks ago

Carla, that is a great idea!!!!

  • UmmLila (Lisa) replied 2 weeks ago

I find this to be a fun, energizing choice for you. And goes really well with the trousers. Even though we all know you glow in navy, I’m sure you don’t want to wear it all the time. I could see you wearing one of these trendy knitted triangle scarves in navy over it, also, with dark wash jeans.

  • Ket replied 2 weeks ago

SMASHING!! I absolutely love you in this!! It gives you a lot of energy and zing. I hope you wear it to shreds :D

I feel most people can wear most colors... in the best version for them. I think that's the caveat: their best version.

For years I felt yellow was a horrible color on me. Lemon, butter, pastel lemonade--they all drained the life out of me. Couple years after I draped DA, I found my season's turmeric yellow. It was a revelation. I have never felt so happy and comfortable in yellow before.

Blue is probably my hardest color. And yet, I found a blue teal yarn and I just love it. (Will post pics one of these days.) I'm still hoping to find DA's Smurf blue one day. That seems very interesting to try.

  • Nadine replied 2 weeks ago

I love the colour on you, and the fit is exceptional.

  • Karie replied 2 weeks ago

This color looks great on you! Very vibrant and a nice addition to your wardrobe.
I also insisted on a yellow bedroom as a child! I wanted bright yellow walls and a blue rug so I could feel like I was at the ocean on a sunny day (I grew up in NJ and my parents had a summer beach house in Sea Isle City).

  • Jenni NZ replied 2 weeks ago

Oh that’s lovely on you Suz, makes your hair look at least as luminous as usual. Nice to have something extra bright for winter. I hope it’s warm enough- I wear a lot of merino in our winter but not mixed with cotton. This colour is almost, but not quite, a mustard?

  • cat2 replied 2 weeks ago

Fun jolt of color! I found a warm light yellow tee when shopping for summer that was a fun addition. I wore it with an ancient headed to landfill black micro-gingham skirt. I can’t remember the last time I had something yellow. I have vague memories of a yellow Oxford cloth shirt that made me look like death. I wouldn’t worry about it being a closet orphan; when I hung them together and tried to make outfits I realized none of the various greens I have bought over the years match any other green piece. But they all get a lot of wear.

  • Kyle replied 2 weeks ago

Waving to my belt twin. I hope this color makes you happy, because it makes me happy to see you wearing it. Very pretty, flattering and a great way to perk up existing wardrobe items. Love it on you!

  • Suz replied 2 weeks ago

Thanks, Kyle, belt twin! It's a really fun change.

cat2, that is good to hear about your different greens. In nature, we look at and enjoy different shades of the same colour in close proximity all that time, so why not in our closets, too?

Jenni, thanks! It's not really as "dirty" as mustard in real life. Brighter and closer to citron, but a slightly sour citron, if that makes sense. So it's not a pure lemon yellow but one with lime mixed in.
