Outfit Lab: What happened when I wore it -- and what I need instead

Angie's outfit formula on Friday reminded me that I seldom wear this absolutely beautifully made Lafayette 148 striped cotton dress. The picture does not do the fabric or construction justice. It's  impeccably made, with the kind of finishing that I rarely see, and I got it on super sale at the Rack -- it was probably the last one or something. There is so much for me to love here -- the low contrast grey and off-white stripe, the mixed stripe pattern, the deep pockets, the breezy, roomy skirt. And yet -- after its first year in my closet, I have rarely reached for it, and Angie's post, along with  Dee's post today about her new striped dress made me consider the "whys." (Thanks, Dee.

In terms of the style -- while I love so much about it, including the neat neckline and armholes -- it tends to feel a bit too classic or even "ladylike" for my style.  When I wear it with a topper like a distressed denim jacket, and a sneaker or an oxford, it works.  When I go too matchy matchy or ladylike with the accessories -- or really, when I try to go "one and done" with very simple footwear/ accessories --  it feels just a bit uptight, for want of a better word. It would suit a dramatic classic better than a gamine, maybe? <shrug>

Still, today was hot and sunny -- a perfect day for this amazingly wrinkle-free cotton fabric-- and I decided to try it out.

I used to wear it with a pair of red heeled sandals, but those are long gone and anyway, I had to run errands on my bike.

#1 was my first try. Red earrings and flats and also my red bag. Verdict: too matchy matchy, and I didn't like the proportions of the long earrings with my longish face and flats.

Next I tried with my EF silver flatforms and simple Enoki stud earrings, almost invisible. I didn't love it, but it was fit for purpose, I thought. Off I went on the bike.

For, um, two blocks.

Despite the length of the skirt, it was impossible to wear this on a bike -- it kept hitching way up my thighs as I rode, nearly exposing my undies to the world, something I am not eager to do!

I quickly went home and changed into my sarong shorts....

I don't plan to get rid of this dress. But it's clear why I'm not wearing it much. Not only does it present styling challenges for me but it is also exceptionally impractical for my daily life now that I live in a suburb and spend as much time on my bike as I do walking. In Vancouver (where I bought it, and where I always walked or was on transit) it was not impractical. But for my current lifestyle, it's hard to casualize it enough.

What I need instead: more JORTS!!! Please send links if you know of any. I scouted the mall today and found nothing that I liked. Preference for below the knee, not black or brown (though I would consider brown).

Also, does anyone with a similar lifestyle-issue wear skimmers or bike shorts under dresses like this? I could consider that, perhaps?

I so get this! I have a striped chambray classic cut denim buttoned dress. I often feel too stiff in it for a casual day. Gorgeous dress btw. I do like it with the silver.

  • Angie replied 4 months ago

This dress is absolutely KILLER to the Power of KILLER on you, Suz. You look gorgeously beautiful!!! I LOVE IT!!! You've styled it beautifully both ways. The red is dressier, and the silver more casual. Can't pick a fave. Too bad you didn't feel right in either rendition :(

    "SOBBING"

I wear this type of dress daily in the Summer - (with sleeves for sun protection) - with flats, crossbody, specs, a necklace, and call it a day. Lots of walking, and with doggies in tow - I can move around in it freely as long as the fit is roomy at the bottom.

Granted I am not on a bike, and I live in the city!!! Like you when you lived in Vancouver or Kingston, and it made sense there. Makes sense that jorts and top are more suited to your current lifestyle. Definately easier to ride in! Get more jorts! :)

Glad you're keeping the dress for the right occasion!

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 4 months ago

Well, I can see that it is not as sporty-casual as you usually wear. The dress does read more garden-party to me than errands-running. (Unless you are Angie!) But it is so lovely on you. I'm glad to hear you're not thinking of passing it on. It could be just right for about any summer day you are not biking.
But yes, I did think: how about some bike shorts under the dress? I've just thrown on a pair of my actual padded-butt bike shorts to wear under a dress to ride to work (several years ago), and then took off the shorts while I was at work.

  • Sal replied 4 months ago

It is lovely but I do understand! I have similar but different reasons for not reaching for a piece.

This could also be fun with the orange sandals?

I could see this for summer dinners out or in, or any summer trips away too. It doesn’t read as prim to me - but it is classic in the best of ways.

  • Mirjana replied 4 months ago

First of all the dress is so beautiful on you. Both styling way are perfect. You really need it for the right occasion, the dress is timeless. I completely understand you, your life style need something different. I felt the same way before when I spent summers out of town. I needed only shorts and tees so my dresses stayed in closet. Now I'm in the city and in the center and like Angie I walk a lot and the dress is a very good piece of clothing for warm days.

  • Sisi replied 4 months ago

I understand that this dress can be a bit impractical for riding a bike (strange though ... because it's longish) but you look fab in it! Keep it for other occasion. Yes, you could wear biker shorts underneath ... but at this point just wear shorts! :) You look stylish in # 3.

  • kkards replied 4 months ago

Super cute dress, but I get it, sometimes something works on paper, but not in reality.

    Bummer.

  • Dee replied 4 months ago

Oh, you know how I struggle with this issue myself, hence my most recent post. It's a beautiful dress on you that in theory could work for how you want to wear it but not in practice. It just isn't sporty enough I guess, but even then it needs to be right length and fabrication too. I also don't see the point of wearing bike shorts underneath, too much bother, I'd rather just wear shorts instead.

I recently bought a nice pair of lighter wash denim Bermuda shorts or maybe you could call them jorts (?) ,,, on sale at RW& Co. They seem to fit true to size and come in a few different washes and colours. The actually length on me is closer to my knees and bit wider too compared to the model in this photo. I love them !

  • Helena replied 4 months ago

Great analysis Suz ... Save it for brunch with friends, and invest in jorts for biking days! So beautiful on you though.

  • Aquamarine replied 4 months ago

Beautiful dress and I’m glad you are keeping it. No advice on biking in a dress, but I always wear lightweight skimmers under dresses in the summer. Otherwise I feel naked?? (For me, it’s probably the years of Catholic school and the skirt I had to wear. At some point I realized I wanted more coverage on the playground :-))

  • Irina replied 4 months ago

I agree with others - you look absolutely gorgeous in this dress.

If you’d want to style this dress in more casual way, I suggest adding a straw or fabric bag, sporty sandals. I have no idea what one should wear riding a bike. I don’t and also have 0 shorts, it’s actually a type of clothing I don’t really like but I understand its usefulness.

  • cat2 replied 4 months ago

Great dress; keep to wear for your non-biking days. You have fun silver and accent color accessories that will work with it. Burgundy?

  • Gail replied 4 months ago

Love the dress on you !

  • Suz replied 4 months ago

Thanks for all the kind and helpful comments.

Rest assured, I am not letting this dress go -- no way. I just need to invent or find some occasions to wear it. It does work well with the orange sandals, as Sal suggested, and really, all my sneakers and sandals (below) and would work maybe with some more rustic elements (as Irina suggested, a straw bag, and I've thought of a cognac betl/ sandals, except I don't own those). I don't own burgundy summery footwear, cat2 -- but would be open to that -- or fuchsia, or red sandals, or really any bright sandal. I always enjoy having at least one like that in the closet.

Thank you, Dee, for inspiring the analysis, and for linking to your new shorts!. I am really in search of below the knee options and found some on Angie's original jorts post. I'm looking for Canadian or European options and did find some supposedly in stock at my local H&M so might check there on Thursday, when I'm supposed to be meeting a friend at that mall. Going to check out Mango, too.

Sharan, I'm for sure not Angie, (to say the least, LOL) but when I lived in a more urban place, I definitely would wear a dress like this to run errands -- grocery shop, meet a friend, dentist, etc. Not for gardening, obviously. But for most other activities. That is why I have been scratching my head about why I don't wear this one. But I see that it is my new lifestyle. I have to forgive myself because when I bought it, I had no idea where I'd be moving or what my needs would be.

Sisi, I think it is the wind. The long skirt does offer coverage but the wind just puffs it up and blows it all around. I do live on an island with a lot of wind. My bike is a lowstep so it's easy in theory to wear a dress. But...

Onwards! More jorts for the summer and limiting the dresses I buy, much as I love them! But I will aim for some dressier jorts as well as very casual denim ones, too.

  • Irina replied 4 months ago

Suz, didn’t you buy red flats last year? Or I’m confused you with someone else?Oh, I see you posted them. Would be perfect with the dress, no?

  • Suz replied 4 months ago

Yes, Irina. I'm wearing them in the first version of the outfit. So they work. They are not walking shoes, alas -- too flat for me. I do wear them on my bike, though, ironically! (Grippy soles!) And I can wear them for very short on my feet stints, like to the grocery store or other shopping, if I happen to drive.

  • Irina replied 4 months ago

Oh, sorry, I missed it. Flats are not an easy footwear. I have to put silicone heel inserts on some of mine to make it work.

I don’t know if you looked but H&M sells (online)  knee length denim shorts and denim Bermuda shorts in multiple washes.

  • booksandtea replied 4 months ago

First: what a beautiful dress, so beautifully worn! Loved it with both red and silver shoes. I bet it would look terrific with cute sneakers, too.

Second: I started wearing bike shorts/legging shorts under dresses for kid playground purposes and have never looked back. I especially like this kind: https://www.joefresh.com/ca/2-.....7019004_EA

  • LJP replied 4 months ago

As gorgeous as this dress is and as beautifully as it fits you , it strikes me as quite dressy and indeed prim ( not in a bad way , just not relaxed ) . I personally would get zero use out of a dress like that but if one had lunches , wedding related events , graduations , etc to go to , then it’s perfect for that kind of thing . I wear skimmers / Spanx bike shorts under summer dresses - always . For both modesty ( I feel oddly exposed if not wearing them even though I wouldn’t be ) and because I cannot bear the feeling of my legs touching each other . Lol . As for jorts , nothing from me but I may look for a pair once I’ve returned from vacation ….where I should NOT be using wifi , hahahaha.

  • JAileen replied 4 months ago

When I was in high school and college, I often wore dresses and skirts while riding my bicycle.  I must have flashed people but was oblivious!

  • Suz replied 4 months ago

JAileen -- i know --I don't know how or why it sometimes works! It has worked for me in the past. I have seen women doing it elsewhere in the world, too. It might be just that this skirt is too wide -- the wind catches it!

I think I'm going to invest in a little pair of skimmer shorts so that I can wear my skirts on the bike more comfortably.

And I'm definitely checking out H&M for the jorts, and I have a few other ideas also.

  • Jaime replied 4 months ago

Agree that the dress is absolutely smashing on you (I like it with the silver sandals especially). But also get why it is hard to wear for your day to day. Save it for date night, weddings or other events like that, and know you always have a solution for the last minute slightly dressier occasion. On another note, so glad to welcome you to the world of jorts. I have no links to share of course, but scoop them up while they are trending :) !

  • Val MN replied 4 months ago

I bike in dresses and skirts. If it’s a fuller skirt that might ride up or blow around, I definitely wear shorts underneath, preferably a lightweight bikeshort or skimmer.

That said, some skirts just don’t work well on a bike, even with shorts. It sounds like your very elegant striped dress is one of those. Maybe it’s not wide enough at the hem, despite being full higher up. Lucky that dressier occasions also tend to be non-biking occasions!

  • Lisa replied 4 months ago

The dress is lovely on you, but it is understandable that your lifestyle changed and it no longer fits. For now, it's a special occasion dress!

I have no jorts suggestions, but something I've been wearing this summer that might work well with a bike is a jumpsuit. Many of them come in cropped lengths that are below the knee. Just tossing the idea out there.

    Good luck jorts shopping!

  • Runcarla replied 4 months ago

I believe it boils down to ‘form follows function’ - LOL!

This summer has been super hot, and I’ve had lots more errands to run - and far less time in the garden - than previous summers.  And, guess what?!  I’m wearing dresses much more than any summer since I retired 8 years ago!  Skirts too!

  • Zaeobi replied 4 months ago

Can I ask, do you wear other dresses when cycling Suz? If so, is the issue with this one in the length or the poof?

If it's the former, could you hem it? If it's the latter, would buttons help to temper the volume (like a roll tab sleeve, but for skirts)?

Otherwise I've seen bike shorts recommended already. Personally, I find cotton slipshorts useful to avoid 'chub rub' without having to wear leggings in the summer, but there's no point buying a pair just for this one dress.

  • RobinF replied 4 months ago

Love the dress, especially with the red shoes. But I do see that it can read quite classic on you. I am like Lisa, I always wear some sort of bike shorts under dresses. Prevent the stick and gives me some coverage :) Maybe it is fine that this is saved for slightly dressy occasions? You do book readings and such, I could see it for that type of outing.

  • aloha emily replied 4 months ago

You look amazing in the dress, and I’m glad you’re able to define why it nonetheless doesn’t work for you.

I’m increasingly convinced that jorts are the answer to everything!!! Team jorts all the way!!

  • Suz replied 4 months ago

Emily, Jaime -- you made me laugh. Jorts for the win, indeed!

But I'll admit, I'm really intrigued by the cotton slipshorts idea and do plan to get a pair or two.

And, finally, some of your questions have been super helpful because I do wear other dresses occasionally on my bike and don't have this problem with them. I'm going to experiment to see if I can figure out why, but I think it may have something to do with the width of the skirt (this one is actually wider than most others I have in back as well as front...) and maybe something to do with fabric weight. And there may have been higher winds than usual the day I tried it. Hmmm....

  • SarahD8 replied 4 months ago

Gorgeous dress and looks beautiful on you!

I can relate to the feeling that something is almost right but feels too prim and ladylike if not styled carefully. Definitely gamine people problems.

I actually really like it with the big red earrings. I wonder if leaning heavily into arty accessories would help -- might emphasize the bold, graphic nature of the stripes running different directions and counteract the classic cut? You have some Warren Steven Scott earrings, no? That sort of thing ....

  • Laurie replied 4 months ago

    I adore this dress.

I admire you for cycling in dresses and skirts. I have never attempted such a thing! I like the suggestions for shorts underneath - sounds like a perfect solution.

  • Bijou replied 4 months ago

More love for how you look in this dress, but I understand feeling too classic in it. I like the idea of adding denim and sneakers to make it more you.

  • Cookie replied 4 months ago

I am incensed on your behalf by the biking unfriendliness of this beautiful dress. I don’t think it looks uptight at all, though maybe matching earrings with shoes turns up the “ladylike” dial too much for your liking. It would be very cute either way sneakers. Glad you are not threatening to get rid of it!

  • Kyle replied 4 months ago

We must be on the same style wavelength. I’m also finding certain items to be too classic or ladylike, buttoned up or twee for my liking. I’m seeing a little shift toward adding a bit of edge or something maybe unexpected (kind of like creative tension) in my outfits. I'm struggling to explain it, but I think it’s what you are saying, Suz.

As others have said, this is a great dress, and you can add the elements you want (like a denim jacket, etc.) for dinners out or other activities beyond biking. I like my wardrobe items to be versatile and work for many settings and activities, but realize that not every item will, and that’s ok. As always, I’m impressed by your wardrobe, styling, and insight into what does or doesn’t work and why.

  • Janet replied 4 months ago

I totally understand. I buy summer dresses and then feel too dressed-up in them. I’m learning that in general I do better with skirts and tops, or loose lightweight pants. Shorts and I have a problematic relationship and I mostly just wear mine around the house, but sometimes…

The bicycling thing is totally understandable. If I were getting on a bike, a skirt or dress would not be my choice, no matter how forgiving of movement.

  • Carol replied 4 months ago

I love that dress, but I LOVE classic style, among other styles. Simple shapes and simple accessories create a beautiful architecture. I do like pic. 1.

You know better than I do what you want to do with that dress, whether work with it, or pass it on. An easy solution would be to throw a crochet tee/top over it.

Jorts....I am finally coming along. I fell in love with these, that came up in my ads.  I don't know if I will get any.

Carol, I LOVE those!!! Thank you! Will search for something similar.

The dress is lovely on you, Suz, and I love how you've styled it with your colourful earrings. Looking forward to seeing more of it on your non-cycling days :).
