Season of Bricks & Mortar, Part 2

Part 2, Toronto. I was in the city twice this fall and both times popped into a few shops. My time was short, alas, but the Finds were good. Once again, all these items went into immediate rotation.

At Club Monaco I got this fun red merino sweater with Edwardian sleeves, an Angie pick. (But I found it before that, she boasted immodestly, ha ha).

Also, in the "never say never" department -- these leopard print corduroy jeans! I am usually not one for ultra stretchy jeans (I prefer denim with a very low stretch quotient, mostly cotton), nor am I one for calf-sucking skinnies, nor am I one for corduroy -- but I could not resist! I do feel they are more like "leggings" than jeans and even though they are high waisted I feel better with a longer top, perhaps because it breaks up the expanse of, ahem, leopard. But these are cozy, warm, comfy, and super fun.

I also got the pom pom hat on that shopping trip.

Then, at Banana Republic, the fabulous Black Watch pants, already shown. On an even bigger impulse (because I could not resist and everything was 50% off) I threw in the matching jacket. Note, they call this "Long and Lean" in the description but it is actually the shorter Classic style that hits high hip and can be worn with some dresses. Many would consider this too short to wear with trousers but I am okay with this length on me. It makes a suit! Or can be mixed and matched, of course. In photo 5 I'm wearing with plain blue Sloans tucked into tall boots on a slushy day. With a brooch for some retro silliness -- lunch with an old friend.

On that outing I also got the fab red military jacket.

And finally, the Kit and Ace side zip pants (shown with the red sweater). These are replacements for an older pair in black. They are sleek, easy to wear, and terrific for travel.

I apologize for the lighting in the photos. I do my best to adjust but it has to do with the angle of the natural light -- it works better when I set up the DSLR but that has not been available to me as DD is using.

Thanks for looking and happy to offer recommendations or advice on any of these items, all of which (I think) are still available except those Sloan pants, which were so fantastic they sold out instantly.

Two military jackets? Oh my! The military vibe works so well for you. I love them both. And a tartan suit. You're hitting it out of the ball park.

  • Suz replied 6 years ago

    Adding Finds that complete outfits...

  • Suz replied 6 years ago

For someone with pacifist tendencies it is a bit odd, don't you think? ;) Oh well...

  • LaPed replied 6 years ago

Hooray for short jackets and blazers! That's my preference too. In fact, I think 4 and 7 are my favs.

One can be a militant pacifist, you know. Like Albert Einstein. ;)

  • Suz replied 6 years ago

Thanks, LaP -- I am happy to put myself in that camp then!

And yes, I think a short jacket works well on a petite gamine type. Unless, like gryffin, your legs are relatively long, in which case the long over short proportion is a slam dunk.

I can and do wear a longer jacket, too...but it usually has to have good waist definition.

  • Joy replied 6 years ago

Love the jackets on you, but my favorite is #1 with the red sweater. You did a great job finding pieces that will work for your figure and lifestyle.

  • Elizabeth P replied 6 years ago

Oh my Suz, more great finds!

You seem to be pushing things more this year, style wise.  All your new pieces seem to have more going on than they often do... pattern, funky sleeves, embellishments.  Am I noticing this because you are posting them all at once?  or is it because your "essentials" are sorted so you are focusing on purchasing statements?  Or am I sensing a shift?

I also got those Sloan pants, but sent them back.  they were a really awkward length on me... way too short.  I'd wear them in the summer with bare ankles, but couldn't see how to make them work for me in winter.   I was so annoyed with myself for not getting the longs when I first saw them.  Funny how longs sell out almost instantly.  You'd think they'd clue in, and make more!!

  • Angie replied 6 years ago

WOW, Suz. Smashingly splendid all round.

You've had an brilliant season, Queen Blue, Grey & Fire Engine. I'm thrilled for you. (((HUGS))).

I LOVE the CM jumper in #1 on you. That's KILLER to the Power of KILLER. In fact. I need my crash helmet....

I LOVE the checked suit. All sorts of fun Killer Fabness. You're dead right about loving the shorter jacket - it loves you right back.

Next fave is the red millitary jacket - another Killer Sublime piece. Does it work with the red boots?

Pom-poms, snow leopard cords, travel pants, asymmetry, bling - you've got it going on, girlfriend. Are those pearls you're wearing in #4?

  • Suz replied 6 years ago

    I am blushing! :)

Angie, those are my version of pearls. I will try to make a Find for them so you can get a closer look. I got them years ago at a thrift shop for about a dollar. They are actually oversized silvery-blue pearl shaped baubles. Which work better on me now than they did when I bought them. Regular pearls looked great on me when my hair was blonde but I find they are a bit too warm nowadays unless I have other cream or ivory bits in an outfit. These work with the hair.

The red jacket works perfectly with the red boots. The CM sweater is a real fire engine red and the military jacket is what I'd call a true red, almost verging into tomato territory but not quite, but the boots harmonize with both. I didn't have them on for this photo simply because of weather conditions. The La Canadiennes are up to the slush! :)

Elizabeth, what thoughtful remarks and good questions! I am really sorry the Sloans did not work on you. (Also, it proves how short my legs are! I think I'm only two inches shorter than you but obviously your legs are much longer, because these are full length on me...)

I think you are right that I've got most of my essentials covered and am looking for more fun in the pieces I add. Also, it's what's available in the stores, right? And these pieces fit with my expressed goal of increasing the red in my closet. But I've always been a sucker for military detailing. Angie has mentioned that it works well on her and it equally suits me and so whenever this style hits the market I like to stock up on it.

Joy, thank you. I feel as if focusing on one colour really helped, plus with red being the "colour of the season" I got lucky!

  • harmonica replied 6 years ago

You look absolutely FAB, Suz! So much fun with adding red and the items you've found are amazing. So glad you're posting again.

  • Sal replied 6 years ago

I love the red on you- and I love the details on these pieces too, I can find red but often it is in very classic pieces not really cool pieces!!

The proportions in all work for you and I know silhouette variety has been something you have wanted in the winter so a great success story.

  • Christina F. replied 6 years ago

    You are my hero.

  • UmmLila (Lisa) replied 6 years ago

The red sweater and military jacket are astoundingly good choices for you. I really love the leopard pants with their grey tones as well.

  • Angie replied 6 years ago

Suz, fun that your reds remix. Love the tonal effect. Looks chic and modern. And do post a close-up of the pearls. I’m intruigued.

  • Style Fan replied 6 years ago

Great pieces Suz.  I love military jackets too.  They add structure and definition.  Love the shorter jacket on you.

  • deb replied 6 years ago

You did well. Love all of these pieces on you.

  • SarahD8 replied 6 years ago

Wow, such great pieces! Each one has interest but is not over the top or overdone. You wear them well! I sense that you have a good understanding of what you will wear and recognize what you are looking for when you see it. that's inspiring!

  • replied 6 years ago

It's interesting how your wardrobe has evolved over the past year or so- maybe 18 months.  So tied in with your hair change - but there also seems to be a bit more detail in the pieces now.    As usual, it's so cohesive and beautiful, and everything works with everything else.  I had my eye on that red sweater too, but never did find it in the red.  Really nice on you!  I much prefer these reds now to your former berries as the red has such  vibrancy that the berries lacked  .  Amazing what a change in hair colour can do, isn't it?   I have yet to wear my red jacket, but it's hanging out and ready to go for the next dressier occasion :)

  • Tina replied 6 years ago

Your red boots and red sweater look so fabulous that now I want red boots. And a red sweater. Oh. Perhaps I'll just admire your look!

  • Jazzy Dance replied 6 years ago

You look amazing in red! Sweater #1 is gorgeous on you.

  • Joyce B replied 6 years ago

Nice outfits, Suz! Sometimes brick and mortar is worth the trip, right? I agree with the 50% off being a good enticer. Those Sloans look fab on you. I lucked out and was also able to get the plaid ones, the fit is great and looser on the thighs than the usual Sloans. I am thinking of adding a matching cropped jacket and after seeing your pictures I might give it a try. The red sweater is super on you, too.

  • Suz replied 6 years ago

Joyce, go for it! That jacket will look fantastic on you. It is proportioned very nicely for us shorter women! And yes, the Sloans have a slightly easier fit all round, I found, than their usual style. I really like them.

  • Jaime replied 6 years ago

The bright reds and white and silver really look wonderful on you and make each outfit. You have become an excellent shopper and can zero in on the right piece in a flash. All around fab!

  • Katerina replied 6 years ago

Such great pieces! The outfits are beautiful and I love your look in all the pictures.
The red colour is fab on you!
No 3 particularly appeals to me.
I also love the brooch in no 5! Could you tell us more about it?

  • RobinF replied 6 years ago

Nice! Love the red sweater and the leopard pants! I'm a big fan of animal prints, they are just so fun. I love checking out your WIW's, they are always such a modern twist on classic pieces - I'm full of admiration!

  • Suz replied 6 years ago

Robin, Angie is the one who taught me that trick. I'm a very classic dresser at heart but also want to feel current, so the solution seems to be looking for simple yet well cut essentials and add-ons with a twist.

Katerina, thank you. The brooch is an old one that I picked up a local flea market.

Shevia, coming from the best shopper of all time, that is a great compliment! Now I need your help with my hair. I am tired of the style...

  • Chris987 replied 6 years ago

YOU ROCK!!!  Wow. Talk about finding your sweet spot (s) !!!  I know the tennis metaphor doesn't go with rock n' roll but trying to say something that has not already been said :-).

  • Bijou replied 6 years ago

So hard to pick a favourite, it is all so lovely and Angie is right, we all need to be wearing crash helmets!

  • karen13 replied 6 years ago

You look gorgeous (as always!) in all of these. My favorite piece is that military jacket.I always look forward to your WIWs - they are aspirational for me. DH and I always joke when we are visiting San Francisco that we are on the lookout for his style icon - you have become one of mine.

  • Janet replied 6 years ago

It's so great to see all that beautiful new red on you -- you wear it so well! And those patterned pants are fun and look just right. Excellent shopping season. :-)

  • lyn67 replied 6 years ago

Wow, will come back to study in detail, but wanted to say nr 6 is K2K for me!

  • Sara L. replied 6 years ago

These are all great!  I especially like that red sweater and the red military jacket (as I think I commented on another thread).  You're having great shopping luck this season.

  • Cardiff girl replied 6 years ago

Love it all, you can do no wrong style wise in my eyes.
