Show me your slippers : Update with choices

I need to ramp up my indoor footwear! If shoes are a big part of my statements, no wonder I feel frumpy if I spend much of my time padding around in less-than-fab slippers.

I'm hoping the YLF collected wisdom can help me out.

In summer, I pretty much go barefoot at home in the house. But in winter, I've been wearing these Foamtreads for several years. (In Finds)

What I like/ what works for me:

  • Rubber sole -- I can go outdoors if I need to quickly, keep my feet warm on hardwood.
  • Fleece inside -- keeps feet warm
  • Slip-on -- easy to get on and off and keeps me from getting too hot, which can also happen.
  • Suede upper -- a little more shoe-like, less like PJs.

What I don't like

  • The fit is not perfect. They're a bit wide, and I tend to step on that little back piece so it flattens down and looks scrungy.
  • They may be unobjectionable, but they are hardly "fashionable."

So...show me your slippers and house shoes! Tell me what you like and dislike. What could I wear indoors for a little more fashion flair? It can be an actual slipper, or it can be a shoe of some kind that is easy on/ easy off and not too heavy. I can wear wool socks for warmth.

Note -- I would like to try some slip on sneakers, but unfortunately, I have not found a pair that stay on my feet. Ditto smoking slippers and basically, almost all flats -- although the rare exception does turn up now and again, and for something I love the look of, I would investigate.

Thank you! And thanks also for putting up with my endless posts from the sickbed. YLF is my entertainment.

Update:  I hit the buy button. And not for what I thought I would order. I have one pair of Uggs (like Parsley's) and one pair of smoking slippers on their way -- let's hope one or both will stay on my narrow heels. And thank you all!

This post is also published in the youlookfab forum. You can read and reply to it in either place. All replies will appear in both places.

I'm really lame. I've given up on slippers. I wear socks around the house. I have a couple of pairs of seriously thick and warm Smartwool socks that are probably going on 8 or 9 years old that I wear around the house. They're too thick to fit in any shoes or boots, and they aren't pretty, but they make for warm and cozy feet!

ETA: I do have an ancient pair of Cole Haan slip-on shoes (pictured) that I keep by the garage door for running the trash out, going to the mailbox, etc.

  • ramya replied 9 years ago

I use the ikea ones :D but started tripping in them now . So switched to socks instead :D

  • replied 9 years ago

Hi Suz! I recently bought some vastly reduced, slightly sporty looking ballet flats with a rubber sole and elastic straps to hold them on. I would also love a little short black bootie for when it's very cold. I've lost my close up photos but you can see my recent ones below

  • Elizabeth P replied 9 years ago

Suz, try Acorn ones.  They are so cozy, rubber soles, well made, and come in a variety of colours and animal prints.  The leopard ones were the the official slipper of my book club for years! :)

    I hope you're coming around a little...????

  • carter replied 9 years ago

Yay for this thread. I'll be following. I just mentioned on Diane's WIW post that needed to upgrade my "at home" shoes. I wear the exact same style as you, and I have the same issues with frumpiness and that little heel lip squishing down. I do have a pair of smoking slippers that are cute, easy on/off, and nice and light, but there is zero cushion/support for walking on my hard floors.

  • Neel replied 9 years ago

    You need #1 Suz. Deftly Fashionable :D .... I know I know .. Poison eye :)

#2 is what I wear! Hardly a person to give advice :D

  • Sara L. replied 9 years ago

Interesting thread. I wear suede fleece lined moccasins, which aren't stylish but keep my feet toasty warm or ugg boots - not stylish ones, the typical pull on ones.

  • Suz replied 9 years ago

Neel, I was waiting for someone to show me those again. Horrors!! (LisaP subjected me to them the other day...I think it is a plot to keep me in bed, LOL.)

And you're right...we can't really give each other advice in the house shoe department....

Thanks for all the ideas so far! I will look up Acorn, Elizabeth.

    Carter,
that is really interesting you have the same issue with your slippers! It's like they are "between" lengths or something. They fit correctly when I first buy them but it isn't long before that lip is squashed down.

Diane, thank you. That might be a good option for our spring and fall.

    Ramya, nice to see you!

Janet, I like the little wedge on yours. It's nice to have a bit of height to reach those cupboards. Not necessary for you, but for me....

  • Elizabeth P replied 9 years ago

Suz, Acorn have a full heel, which I like - I hate having a cold heel, plus that squishy down thing.  They are generally sold at sporting goods stores... MEC seems to only carry kids ones.

  • Inge replied 9 years ago

I recently bought the Haflinger "doggy slippers", which are a similar style to your slippers, Suz. Not very streamlined, but very cosy, and the doggies make me smile.

How do you feel about a moccasin type slipper? Or a ballet flat (or Mary Jane) or sneaker style for indoors? Or the slipper booties mentioned on your other thread?-) I've included a few of those below too (most are not streamlined either, but sometimes you do find a more "minimalist" version like those grey Campers or the bronze Kohl's).

Sorry to hear you are still feeling under the weather-((

Oh forgot to say, in Summer I wear Birkenstock sandals as house slippers (usually in a fun colour - bright green e.g. - the one strap style, and they never leave the house).

  • replied 9 years ago

haha - Neel beat me to it!

actually, I'm sitting here in bare feet, which happens even in winter until it gets ridiculously cold, then I add my Roots socks. No fashion statement happening at my place:)  Or, it's just whatever leg wear I have on for whatever outfit I'm wearing out and about that day .  I have never gotten into the habit of wearing slippers - I'm the type who would trip on them and fall down the stairs carrying a load of laundry or books or catalogues etc .

  • Rambling Ann replied 9 years ago

Dearfoams or something similar to these. I wear them with socks in the winter, because multiple times per day I switch them on the porch for something weather/manure worthy. Even so, washable slippers are a must around here. I always think I'd like full coverage on the heel, but the hands-free on-off always trumps. In a barnyard emergency, I appreciate the rubber sole so I can run out and chase off a marauding dog or raccoon. I should probably duplicate so I can always have one pair in the wash.

  • Diana replied 9 years ago

I have Haflinger boiled wool kitty slippers.
    Things I like:
They have a kitty and a ball of yarn.  Of course I like them.
    They are red.
They are warm but not too hot and do not make my feet sweat and hence do not get stinky.
I have not yet washed them but they are washable.
They have a bit of arch support.
They are easy to slip on and off.
They don't slip on my hardwood floors.

Things I don't like so much:
They don't have a rubber sole.  They have some rubberized treads on the bottom so they don't slip but it's more like rubbery paint rather than real sole.  I don't wear them outside of my apartment at all.
They are lint magnets.  I guess if I had gotten grey it wouldn't show as much.
They clearly are slippers.  No way these qualify as real shoes.

I wear my Munro slipper flats when I need to go to the basement for laundry or outside to take out the trash, etc.  They're not warm though.

I think I am going to buy the LL Bean mocs this year.  Because they come in teal this time around.

  • Elly replied 9 years ago

These are mine-- I have your problem with shoes staying on my heels, but these work, esp. once worn in.

They meet all your criteria and come in fun colors. L.L. Bean makes similar ones-- I could see you with several jewel-toned pairs.

  • Parsley replied 9 years ago

    I love my Uggs!
They are SO comfy and warm! you don't need socks with them, and the fleece helps them conform to the shape of my narrow foot, but they apparently work for wider feet, too. They've got a nice rubber sole, so I can run out to the the mailbox at the street if need be.
They come in LOTS of fun colors, too! I have two pairs: one in purple, for fun, and one in more sedate black to go with my yoga pant lounge capsule. :-)

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 9 years ago

Suz, I'm on the hunt for a good pair of slippers, too. I had some boiled wool, backless ones with a supportive cork footbed from Fair Trade a while back and wore them till they got holes in the boiled wool. I'm thinking about Haflingers, but I want to be sure I get the ones with really good arch support. From Diana's comment, it sounds like the support on the cute themed ones might not be enough for what I want (to avoid plantar fasciitis again).
So I'll watch this thread for suggestions, too!

  • Suz replied 9 years ago

This is really interesting! Thank you so much. I'm adding things to shopping carts left and right. Won't pull the trigger yet, but am full of thoughts. I love the Halfinger kitty slippers, DIana and Inge, and had already put those in my shopping cart, but when I realized they don't have a proper sole I reluctantly decided to give them a miss. I definitely need that feature. Our kitchen is over a crawl space (no proper basement) and the floor is very cold in winter. That's also why socks alone are no good for me.

I'm now considering a pair of the LLBean mocassins in berry. Also, maybe those fun leopard print Bearpaws....or I might risk a Sam Edelman or Ugg sneaker as an indoor shoe.

And what about this odd Ariat thing? Is it just too strange for words? Reviewers love the support and cushioning. It would not be super warm inside (i.e. not "cozy') but that isn't my need so much as warmth on the SOLE of the foot.

  • Angie replied 9 years ago

Exhibit #1 - Indoors (but not in Summer)

Exhibit #2 - Outdoors to take doggies to the garden for the loo (back in the day). And take the rubbish out.

  • pastrygirl replied 9 years ago

I'm no-nonsense when it comes to indoor slippers. I need warmth! If my feet are cold, the rest of me is cold. I have to wear these with socks to stay toasty warm. I like the bootie height because I'm between sizes, and the lower, regular slip-on styles fall off too easily.

I can go outside in these to take out trash or get the mail. The lining has worn through after a year (or two? I can't remember) of constant wear, so I'm about to get a new pair.

  • Meow replied 9 years ago

I've worn these for years.  I've even given them as gifts!  Very comfy - check out the high reviews.

  • Deb replied 9 years ago

I don't own regular slippers. I'm like Lisa in so much as I just wear my shoes, sandals or boots all day and generally speaking, I don't feel 'dressed' without them. During the cooler months I often put on loungewear and short ugg boots in the evening. When it is really hot and I don't fancy footwear, it is either bare feet or a simple flat mule for around the house. We live in such different climates, and I live in the city, don't have snow, sludge or mud to deal with and we have washable flooring, so having shoes inside is not an issue.

  • cinnamon fern replied 9 years ago

I wear these when it's cold:

    http://www.zappos.com/crocs-co.....lack-black

These might be too close to shoes for you - my 'house shoes' need to be wearable for the late-night dog walk, taking the trash out, etc.

    So ugly, but so comfortable!

  • Laura (rhubarbgirl) replied 9 years ago

I'm like Deb, I wear my 'regular' shoes in the house a lot because we don't have snow or lots of mud to worry about. Or just socks, if I'm not doing something active and I just want to keep my feet warm. In that case, I prefer cotton ragg socks - Lands' End used to sell them and it looks like LLB has them now too. They're too thick to wear with shoes (imo) but perfect for wearing alone because they're cotton and they breathe.

These are my current pairs of 'slippers': LLB fleece for the colder months and supportive Vionic flip-flops for when it's warmer.

  • Susie replied 9 years ago

Temps dropped over the weekend and I got out my slippers. I have a pair of Steve Madden fleece lined that I got last year that are cute and steamlined looking, and have a sole so I can go outside in them. I don't know if they are just worn out but they are no longer comfortable for any length of time (they were cheap.) After wearing them for a while on Satuday I realized that I needed more cusioning for my hard floors.

    So I switched to these:
    http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0059.....B005FJSY3Q

Not super sytlish but they aren't buky, they are comfy with good support and they have a sole. I have the black and am considering adding another color.

  • catgirl replied 9 years ago

You know mine - the old bronze Born slip-ons I'm often wearing in WIWs.

DH just got me a pair of aloe-infused fleecy socks that are so comfortable - my son tried them on and wouldn't take them off even though they are hot pink.  They are slippery on the floor though.

  • Gaylene replied 9 years ago

My Danish Glerups: super cosy on unheated floors, lots of colors, different heights, leather soles, MOLDED felted wool so they are not sloppy and stay put on the foot but still easy to kick off, and, best of all, can use an insert inside for support if you are standing on tile or wooden floors. And washable. And available in Canada! ( I bought mine at a shop on Queen in the Beaches--Walking on a Cloud? Or something to that effect)

My husband who has super fussy feet and requires orthotics even in slippers adores his. Mine are red and his are charcoal.

  • Astrid replied 9 years ago

I'm wearing Birkenstocks year round. They are my old sandals, I cut the back strap off to make them slippers. In summer I'm barefoot in them, in winter I'm wearing warm socks... I do think I should get a new pair some time though.

  • Aziraphale replied 9 years ago

I just wear the classic uggs (tall) as slippers. Mine are the sand colour. They are super comfy. I've had them for about five years, but since I don't wear them much outside, they look brand new. The only downside is that although they are slip-on, you do need to use at least one hand to pull them on!

I don't wear uggs (or any slippers, for that matter) all the time indoors, though. Much of the time I just wear socks. I come home, I take off my shoes, and walk around in my socks. Actually I'm wearing socks as I type this. I mostly wear uggs when I get up in the morning and it's freezing and I don't already have socks on.

In the summer I wear flip flops or just have bare feet.

  • Alexandra replied 9 years ago

Ugh, my house shoes. They're crocs (hanging head in shame). Nothing else works to keep my feet pain-free in this house - tile directly on concrete. At least the colors are great - white with a bright apple green strap.

  • Susie replied 9 years ago

I wear Crocs flip flops in the summer because, just as Alexandra said, they are so comfortable on hard floors. I've had mine for 8 years; they are indestructibe!

And ugly or not I am so checking out those lined ones that cinnamon fern posted! I see that they make a lower heeled one...I might have to have those!.

  • Suja replied 9 years ago

Great thread!  I attached some Finds.  The first is similar to the black
booties I have.  I am also attaching some fun plaid and red ones.  I don't
think they are for me but if I can find leopard booties that don't look
like they were designed for little girls, I will be all over those.  I
wear the black booties with black slim pants (hems rolled) and it makes
me feel fab while chasing kids around indoors.

  • Suz replied 9 years ago

Oh, Suja, I'm so glad you chimed in. Now I know what a slipper bootie is! Those look super cozy. Hmm....

  • Elizabeth P replied 9 years ago

I have to admit... while I HAVE Acorns... I seem wear Birks with socks pretty much all the time.  Unless it's really cold.  In which case I go and stand in the bathroom! :)

  • DonnaF replied 9 years ago

Super shame!!!  It's not Crocs that I wear, it's IMITATION Crocs that are hand me downs from my mom.  They are the comfiest thing I own, don't ever hurt or pinch, and provide needed support and cushioning.  My problem with most slippers are that they have no arch support and make my feet cold from the soles.  These are 200% indestructible; otherwise I would at least buy them in a cute color.

  • gryffin replied 9 years ago

Wow, big high five, Angie!!  merrell moc encore breeze the ultimate summer clog primo for taking doggies out.  Then The merrell moc encore ice (which I am wearing now) for cold weather.  They was up well and are so comfortable.  I know, not glamourous but I've been know to wear them for casual errands.  Maybe it's normcore, but I love them!!  Long live Merrell!!  Suz - amazon, zappos etc carries them but the old encore ice get much better reveiws than the new iteration, fyi anyone interested.

  • Suz replied 9 years ago

gryffin, that is really interesting! So maybe I could nab a pair of the Ice on ebay for cheaper and better. Hmmm.  What I like about those is they lift you off the ground. I really need that on my super cold floors. Anything without a true sole is sort of wasted. Plus, when I am cooking and standing for a long time, I like the cushiony support.

  • gryffin replied 9 years ago

Suz - I was just looking, since I bought them out last year, looks like Merrell has reissued.  http://www.amazon.com/Merrell-.....id=1415060  They also come in this color which you might like called stone.  Like Uggs you want them fitted so you build a nice air pocket and they stay one really well.  I waterproof mine and wash them with uggs cleaner when they get dirty and they are about 5 yr old and look good and that's with abuse(of course I have two pairs waiting just in case;-).  I have raynauds and with socks my feet are toasty.  You are about an 1" off, lots of support - took me forever to find "slippers" this is the ne plus ultra for me!!  Good luck, you have lots of great choices!!

  • Suz replied 9 years ago

Gryffin, that is great -- thank you so much! I have a feeling these might seriously work for me. I may well order. The other place has free returns so I can do a compare/ contrast.

  • Jeanie replied 9 years ago

I see you hit the buy button but I had to put in my vote anyway.  I just love these LLbean shearling clogs (see the reviews).  They are not as beautiful as the Uggs but the price is better for the wallet.    The shearling molds to the the shape of your foot and they have a very sturdy sole that can be worn outside.   Mine have accidentally gone to the grocery store.  I really never want to take them off!  They come in chocolate, tan, and gray.  I have a very narrow heel and have no problem keeping these on.  Good luck!

  • Suz replied 9 years ago

Jeanie, thank you! I was planning to order that style but worried it would have the same problem my current Foamtreads have (walking down on the back part). I am still considering it, though.

In the meantime, look, gryffin, what I found on a Canadian site:

    http://www.walkingonacloud.ca/.....55944.aspx

Can't post a photo but it is the Merrell Ice in a red tone! I ordered those to try as well. Now I have options! :)

  • Jeanie replied 9 years ago

Suz, the LLBean clogs have a stiff lip in the back that contains your feet and doesn't mush down.  At least on the version I have from last year.  I want those Merrell Ice clogs for dog walking now!

  • Suz replied 9 years ago

This is the thing, Jeanie. It's a stiff lip on the Foamtreads, too -- they are made of suede and the braid thing is also quite stiff.  But somehow I end up smushing it down even though the shoe is not too short. I think it is because it is a bit wide for me, maybe, or just the wear and tear of in and out? Not sure.

Anyway -- I'll keep you all posted on my 3 options. Imagine having three pairs of house shoes! I won't keep them all .... I think....

  • replied 9 years ago

I don't own slippers. I wear some old Hush Puppies leather clogs that are really comfortable with or without socks. I also have these:

    http://www.onlineshoes.com/wom.....p_id321262

  • bj1111 replied 9 years ago

Suz, have i lost the plot?  i thought the purpose of getting these "slipper-shoes" is to mimic the panache and excitement that "real" shoes add to the outfit and to decrease work-from-home outfit boredom.  all of these slippers look cozy and super warm but not what i would think of as adding panache and excitement.  functional is what i would use to describe these.  is that what you are going for?

  • Suz replied 9 years ago

Ah, Ruth, you caught me out!!

Well, I do need at least one warm pair. That is non negotiable.

So, let me see some suggestions for house shoes with panache that will also keep my feet from freezing!  ;)

    And stay on.

  • rholmes27 replied 9 years ago

My new ones are from Acorn. I live in a milder climate, though, so I didn't want anything lined. But I am happy with them. I am at home most of the time also, & wanted something that looked nicer than standard slippers.

  • rabbit replied 9 years ago

Like gryffin and Angie I have Merrells.  I use a mary jane  Merrell Encore as house/studio shoes http://www.sierratradingpost.c.....n~p~2192n/    I just wear them with woolly socks in winter, and they are super easy to slip on and off without using your hands yet still stay on my feet unlike some clogs I've tried.   I've had them for years and years and wear them daily.  I originally got them because I was getting backaches and realized it had to do with no proper foot support when I was indoors.  These solved the problem and continue to do their job years later.

  • gryffin replied 9 years ago

Suz - so glad you found them.  Let me know if you order.  Hope you like!!

  • bj1111 replied 9 years ago

I do like the navy slip on sneakers that you posted. Fashionable for the moment, not sure how warm. Or laceless cons or maybe some patterned vans. Not quite ash-like but may serve indoor shoe purpose. Sizing up may let you wear thick socks to boost warmth.

I fear a unicorn hunt --exciting + stylish+ winter warm.

  • Suz replied 9 years ago

Yes...this is the issue. Worse yet, Vans (and similar) don't stay on my feet. Yet I haven't given up hope for a stylish slip on sneaker option. Still may go that route. With socks, it could work. Thing is, they do not provide much support....

Hmmm. More thinking. I can return anything I have ordered -- so nothing is lost and this way at least I can rule things out or in. Thanks for the help, all! :)

  • Gaylene replied 9 years ago

Hmm, well, if it's an actual shoe for wearing inside the house, my favorite is my Taryn Rose ballet shoe with the cross straps. Great support, light enough to pack in my carryon and looks good inside or outside the house. A mite pricey, but I bought mine at 60% off at the Bay.

  • Theodora replied 9 years ago

I LOVE my pink leopard Ugg slippers! I wear them all day at home, and even out to walk the dogs. So comfy, so silly they make me smile :)

  • Deborah replied 9 years ago

Being in Australia, I don't really have an recommendations, but here are mine:
#1 Winter (don't faint when you see the colour lol) & #2 Summer

  • Jeanie replied 9 years ago

Suz, hmmm I don't know about the back lip thing then.  Maybe I walk different.  My feet tend to mush up into the front of the slippers.  Vans don't stay on my feet either.
If you are looking for house shoes....I have these not so sexy Easy Spirit slip on tennis shoes.  I only mention it because they now have a version called Black Quilt that are cute.  The Merrells are my wish list for House Shoes.

  • Kookaburra replied 9 years ago

I wear Birkis from Birkenstock, the covered ones.
There are models with a felt top that feel like slippers. The ones I actually have are ones with a cross-cross top like the second pair. The nice thing about Birkis is that the cork footbed is wonderfully insulating and very comfortable when I need to stand on a timber floor in the kitchen for a long time.

Here is a link to a whole lot more styles:

  • Jules replied 9 years ago

I bought these lined moccasins with different beadwork on summer holiday. I was willing to pay for a local indigenous product rather than something mass-produced. Later I realized that the components (such as the rabbit fur) are probably still from China, horrible farming conditions etc. Globalization! I am really enjoying them though, so nice to have proper warm slippers on our cold wood floors.

    I have two house shoes.

The ones I wear the most, alone, with pleasure: X-tensible stretch walkers, in which I have inserted my orthopedic soles. They truly are so comfy I have a hard time taking them off. BUT they look very, very, very casual, especially in the winter when I enjoy wearing them around the house with fun stripped socks in them. The look is purposely frump.

That is why I have my fancy back up, for when I am invited in pple's homes, or when I have guest. They are Sam Edelman's ballet flats. A bit too flat for everyday use, but very easy to put in a purse, and adaptable with most outifts.
