So 2014, and it still works for me-- Update a "new" version

Dear Fab Friends: A few weeks ago I had to get dressed for a casual birthday dinner and movie with friends. I cast around for a while for something suitable, and eventually threw on the outfit below. In which I felt perfectly comfortable and happy.

Guess what? I first wore that outfit back in 2014. Some of the items date to 2013. And I still have them all, and still love them! The sarong shorts are a bit snugger on me than they were back then...when they sort of hung on me, truth be told. But I still love them.

Only the bags and bracelet and watch have changed. I guess I could think of ways to make this more "current" -- but honestly, I was happy as is.

Signed,

Not Always Trendy

Update: Photo 3 -- the "new" version with flatforms for a day that included more walking.

The whole outfit looks great and that's probably because they are not super trendy. Just classic cool!

  • Angie replied 4 years ago

And just as KILLER this time round, Suz. Even better with the silver hair and white back pack.

This is what fashion and style is all about in 2019 and beyond. Doing your own thing with intention, confidence, ease, happiness and verve. Individualism and Signature Style is the name of the game. You’ve got that covered!

    Ha! That’s fun!

  • Janet replied 4 years ago

You look great, then and now! Still perfectly current.

I think those shorts are timeless, really. And I’m not just saying that because I still own mine too! Although I confess I forget about them sometimes because I hang them up (my other shorts are all folded on a shelf) and they get shuffled in behind the skirts. I’ll have to pull them out and wear them. It’s already hitting 90 degrees here on multiple days and it’s not even June yet. Sigh.

Smashing, Suz! The outfit looks modern. I admire the accessories as well - the long necklace is fabulous. So fun to see you wearing the same outfit back in 2014 as well and I just just love this post! Timeless perfection!

Looks great! This is what a solid closet of timeless essentials will do for you!

  • LaPed replied 4 years ago

    This looks great!!

I think trendy for 2019 would involve an oversized jean jacket, flatter and/or chunkier sandals, and some earth-tones somewhere -- maybe tan or mustard for the shoes and bag. Your choices are consistent with your preferences *and* they're more flattering on you!

  • Becky replied 4 years ago

If it ain't broke, don't fix it! Just the fact that you are still so happy with a combination that has gone the distance for you is enough to increase the happiness factor!

  • Angie replied 4 years ago

La Ped is bang on the money if you wanted to add a trendy component, although the white is just as trendy. A long blazer would be another way to go.

But you carry on just like this :)

  • Style Fan replied 4 years ago

The outfit works for you so no need to fix it.  Those are great shorts.  I wish I had a pair.

  • Jaime replied 4 years ago

Worked then, works now! I can't believe you still have those shorts! Mine bit the dust a while back. Hair is plenty trendy :) !

  • replied 4 years ago

I like both your versions, and it certainly looks current to me. Plus just cause something is trendy doesn't mean you have to wear it!
    Signed,
    Not always trendy either :)

  • MsMaven replied 4 years ago

Works for me as well. Look at it this way--you are a careful and clever shopper.

  • Brooklyn replied 4 years ago

Lately I find myself wondering why we value looking trendy. If so, why do we ooh and aah over what Audrey wore in the 50s. Timeless elegance and authentic, signature style is always a winner.

  • taylor replied 4 years ago

This is why staple items are worth investing in!
A good denim jacket really never dates, a neutral shoe and a classic style bag !
You look fabulous and ever so stylish !

  • replied 4 years ago

Angie and LaPed said it all . Those shorts are indeed timeless , and I’m so happy you still have them ! I don’t think a trendy look suits everyone- you have great personal style that works so well for you .

  • Joy replied 4 years ago

The staying power of great items that are fringe trends. YLF.

  • Suz replied 4 years ago

Thanks, all. I agree with Janet -- these shorts really are beyond trends, sort of like harem pants lite or something. I still get compliments on them all the time. I wear them more in Vancouver than I wore them in Ontario -- weather permits polyester more often. I like that they don't wrinkle. I used to bring them on work trips when I worked for the fitness company.

LaPed, those are great updating suggestions. Taupe is pretty much "my" earth colour (well, with hits of cognac in accessories). I don't think I'd enjoy an oversized demin jacket, but never say never, right? Oddly enough, after reading reviews of the Mephisto Lissandra here on another thread, I was gawking at platform sandals half the morning. :) So maybe I will invest in at least *one* new trend this season.

Angie, hmmm, long blazer! I don't actually have one, as you know, but I do have one that is long "for me" and I've never tried it with these shorts. Great idea!

It's really amazing to me how many great purchases I've made since coming to YLF. It's harder to edit my closet than it used to be, because I'm so much better at picking what works!

  • RainB replied 4 years ago

Wow, now that's a timeless wardrobe and a testament to how well you know your style! You look fab :)

  • Mirjana replied 4 years ago

Lovely Suz, worked then works now beautiful. You look so cute.

  • Sisi replied 4 years ago

Not Always Trendy but Always Fab. :)

  • Jenni NZ replied 4 years ago

Yee haa! (Sorry that may be a Kiwi expression). Meaning... awesome. Why edit out things that are still so good?

  • Mainelady replied 4 years ago

What RainB and Sisi said! Each piece is a keeper and YLF! Your outfit from 2014 is not one bit dated. Love it!

  • StyleDetective replied 4 years ago

Who needs trendy when you have stylish :) YLF, in 2014 and 2019.

  • unfrumped replied 4 years ago

Lookin’ great! I love the black/blue/white palette.
I admit I am about blind to “ that is so 2012” of whatever and since I am a slow- adopter ( but DO evolve) I am likely wearing things for first time that may have been trendy a few years ago.

I try to mitigate that by choosing new things that I really like and feel “ like me” and can create a cohesive outfit, and hope for the best!

I think that the proportions , textures and contrasts in your outfit are really good, and so that trumps any particular “ year’s item”.

  • RobinF replied 4 years ago

That's great - even the same shoes! I think it looks fab on you, why mess with what's working. I love how you take classic pieces and make it look current, not quite sure how you do it.

  • nemosmom replied 4 years ago

Great style is timeless - you obviously have it! You look awesome - then and now.

  • Janet replied 4 years ago

You've inspired me. I have a couple of (casual biz) meetings today with fellow artists, and I have worn a dress the last two days so I feel like mixing it up. I think I'm going to wear those shorts today. If I do, I'll post pics!

  • Laurie replied 4 years ago

Classic and signature style. Fabulous then and now!

  • Cardiff girl replied 4 years ago

Worked then, works now.True style is beyond trends.

  • bella replied 4 years ago

And it looks as fab as it did in 2014!

  • karen13 replied 4 years ago

Love the current and the way back! So fun to see both versions.

  • JAileen replied 4 years ago

Both outfits are fab. Your style is timeless. Keep posting WIW, please.

  • celia replied 4 years ago

It still looks fabulous as it did before.
    Great to 'see you' Suz

  • April replied 4 years ago

Suz, when you look fab, YLF.

    That is all.

  • Eliza replied 4 years ago

You had it then and you have it now.  Well done. Love your hair!

  • replied 4 years ago

Love the update.  I actually bought those silver EF's two weeks ago myself- super comfy, but I'm still struggling with getting the outfit right.  I thought they'd be easier to integrate into my wardrobe and wonder if maybe it's the colour. Mine are the "glittery" pewter.....

  • replied 4 years ago

This outfit looks wonderful how you initially styled it & what you’re doing now. When something is so flattering and true to you, it’s never gonna look dated.

  • Angie replied 4 years ago

KILLER with the sporty sandals, Suz. Beautiful silver bookending.

  • Lucy replied 4 years ago

Looks fabulous then and now! Like the saying goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" :)

  • Roxanna replied 4 years ago

Honestly, this happens to me all the time :) I wouldn't describe my style as trendy, and I do love quality items, so when I stumble upon a look that i like, I will often wear it again years later. I think this looks great and current on you - now and in 2014!
