Some BR items up for review

Hi, all -- my wardrobe is in a pretty strong place, but my mission this fall/ winter has been to replace/ upgrade some knitwear. Most of my knit tops are between 5-12 years old. Many are still going strong and I don't intend to let those go, especially the pricier J. Crew and Boden cashmere sweaters, all of which remain in decent to excellent shape. (Yay for relatively non-pilling knits! As we all know, there is no predicting about that, but I have been pretty lucky in many of my choices.)

However, much as I love my older knits and value their durability, I have to admit I'm a bit tired of some of these sweaters. Most are fluid fit/ longer and while they work well semi-tucked as sweater-tees, that's not always the look I am going for with higher waist jeans and trousers. Moreover, I find cashmere a little harder to wear out here on the west coast. Or rather, perhaps it's more accurate to say that my season for cashmere is a bit shorter, especially if it is heavier weight. I often find merino works better in this climate, or other blends.

Anyway, I've made a few new purchases already this season -- an Ann Taylor cotton sweater and an Everlane alpaca, and a J. Crew polo collar cashmere -- but I have also been scouting sales for a few more options. Here are a few from BR, plus a pair of trousers I'm considering.

A note: I am not currently at home and only had one pair of footwear to try, and could not do a whole lot of outfit styling -- these are just try-ons, not fully styled outfits.

First, the Sienna trouser. My review. This trouser is lightweight 3 season wool (in my climate), double pleat, very wide leg, and high waist -- a real Katherine Hepburn type trouser. It is beautifully made, truly, with elastic waist adjustment inside (you can wear it higher or lower on your waist, to a degree) and many other lovely features. There is seam allowance at the hem if I wanted to let these down to become "pooling pants." (They would actually pool on me as is, if I wore with sneakers.) There are slash pockets as well but I haven't opened those up in case I don't keep. These are a tiny bit creased from packaging but if I hung them up, those creases would drop out in a minute.

Sizing: I took a risk and tried petite (for the length). Typically, despite my borderline petite height, I can't wear petite pants because the rise is not long enough for me, but I figured in a style this loose, that would not prove a problem. This proved true. Also, I sized down. They are a perfect fit. At the sale price, they are a great price. My only question is whether they are just too much! :)

Note: there is also a pinstripe version which looks fantastic, but it is not currently on sale and reviews suggest that the fabric is thicker and does not drape as well as the solids. FWIW.

I am inclined to keep...except...if the trend is away from wide legs and high waists, will I get enough wear from these, do you think? Maybe I should put this money into a pair of nice wool cigarette pants. :)

Merino sweaters. BR currently has a few styles in ribbed merino and they are lovely, lovely quality! Not at all scratchy, and quite warm. They are on the body con side (due to ribbing) and they all have very long sleeves with a sort of V (so it looks like a thumbhole sweater when extended) but you can also easily roll up the sleeve if you don't want that feature. I tried a few styles -- the mock neck and the polo collar. I am considering the colours here. This blue is warmer than I typically wear, but I do think it works, and I like it. I also ordered the red to try, but it has not arrived yet. The mock neck stands nicely on me -- it doesn't collapse, as on the model. The cream is possibly a bit warm for me (thoughts?) and I might want to size up in that style -- so I have ordered grey in a size up to compare. Would love your thoughts!

Cotton-silk blend sweater. I ordered two of these, one in my regular size in lilac and one a size down in the stripe. At first I thought I would just keep the lilac, but looking at the pics, I'm not sure. The sleeves are very long on these, but the cuffs can be rolled back neatly. In my regular size, the sweater is a bit boxy, but nice. Obviously, I wouldn't wear it out with these pants -- I'd choose different bottoms to wear it that way.

Quality is gorgeous! The silk component makes the sweater drape and gives it a hint of sheen. Now, looking at the stripe, I quite like that one as well -- it looks more like a traditional welted sweater on me, a neater, more tailored fit but also nice?

I can keep any or none of these -- all are returnable and they are within the budget. I'd love to hear your thoughts! And I hope these reviews may help others in the market at the moment. Thanks in advance!

Pretty new options for cold weather - love the sweaters ( especially blue merino sweater and cream polo one )! Pants fit you great - like it a lot with blue sweater tucked in. I used to have some of the BR cotton-silk blend sweaters from before - would be tempted to get a new one ;-) .

  • Irina replied 2 weeks ago

Oh, these are great, Suz! You look fab in wide leg pants. If you feel fab, I would say keep, keep! I know that you like trendy bottoms and this trend loves you back.

The sweaters I like the least - the cream one and a lilac one. Something is off with the fit to my eye, maybe the sizing.

  • Angie replied 2 weeks ago

KILLER pants, Suz! I vote KEEP.  Love the drama and drape! But make sure you like them with your outerwear.

FYI: There will be a fringe trend towards cigarette pants - and some of it is coming through now. Big and BIG pants aren't going anywhere though! The volume of these makes them a timeless trend anyway - and avant-garde. So not to worry.

I'm still buying BIG pants - see Find below. Those are new and very slouchy!

    Knitwear:

    • Love the blue ribbed mock neck! If you don't mind the length of the sleeves - KEEP. The blue is plenty cool-toned.
    • I like the shade of cream and the fit of the body con rib from what I see in the pics :) - that said, always good to compare sizes and colours.
    • LOVE the stripe! My favourite. KILLER. KEEP :)
    • Prefer the way the stripe fits! Cheekier. Neat and tidy. That said, that's a lovely more fluid lilac jumper. Great with imminent cigarette pants!

It’s a lot of pant, Suz, especially in pic 2. I think you know that I’m not particularly a wide leg fan, having finally bought my first pair recently after they have been on trend at least 5 years by this point.
So I am not sure about these. They do look a good fit, maybe just not very gamine?
I will come back later about the tops.

#1 - I vote keep the big pants! But I am biased and very fond of wide legs. I won't give them up if the trend shifts away from big and bigger pants. They are too comfortable and have too much drama to give up the look, at least to me.

#3 - Pretty color blue here and I like the ribbed detail. This looks like a great piece to layer with jackets and blazers and I vote keep.

#5 - I like this cream color on you. I have found cream tops are great for a heavy blue based wardrobe. You'll get a lot of use out of this one. The body con fit looks nice to my eye, and this get a keep vote.

#6 - I vote pass on this one. The color is fine on you but this sweater looks too boxy compared to the fit of the striped one.

#8 - I like the size of the stripes on you as well as the fit of this one and vote keep.

You've got some very solid new additions here, great job!

My favorite tops at first glance are the cream polo top and the striped top. The striped top is perfect full stop. I love the style of the cream on you and just can't judge the color on my screen. I also like the blue. All great picks!
I love the trousers on you. I cannot wear this style (and I have tried) so am very encouraging of anyone that can. Not sure if they will be workhorses - I see them more as occasional wear but with longevity in your closet because even as the trend might float back to narrower legs it will float away again. Katharine Hepburn as my witness.

  • Dee replied 2 weeks ago

Oh those pants have drama and fit great, if you can see opportunities to wear them I’d say why not try this style change. My favourite tops are the blue mock-neck, so lovely with your eye colour and of course I always love a stripe sweater and this one looks terrific on you.

  • Star replied 2 weeks ago

From a quick glance due to time restraints this morning, just chiming in to say I love the first one and the striped one the most on you.

  • Olive Green replied 2 weeks ago

Love the pants and the cream top so much. Hepburn.

  • Helena replied 2 weeks ago

I love all of this Suz ... I'm going to be an enabler and say keep it all! I have one of the cotton-silk blend sweaters from BR, from either last year or the year before ... Like you, I noted the long sleeve length, but given I scrunch didn't let it bother me, and that sweater is an absolute workhorse, and washes and wears brilliantly. It's the right weight for early fall all the way through to late spring.

  • Staysfit replied 2 weeks ago

Love the pants!  They are so flattering and fit you well,  I think my favorite sweater is the lavender followed by the cream.  The stripe next and the blue ribbed one is also nice but I can see why you say it is warmer than your usual.  If you are questioning this color will you be happy wearing it?  Maybe keep looking for a cooler blue that you would prefer.

  • RobinF replied 2 weeks ago

Ooh I love the blue sweaters on you especially. The stripe is my favorite. I also love the cream. The only one I am not sure about the the lavender. It doesn't seem to work as well on you. I will defer to others on the pants. I still have not gotten used to the wide legs and am not a good judge :)

  • SarahD8 replied 2 weeks ago

Ohhh my gosh those pants! Stunning on you! I hope you keep them.

I think the blue mock neck is also fantastic on you. I especially like it with the pants.

Ivory sweater -- I will be the spanner and say I'm not sure about this one. It might be the warmth of the color, or something about the placket -- the length and narrowness of it just seems to lack a certain oomph? I might have a bit of a poison eye for this style, so grain of salt and all. It will be interesting to see the gray.

In these pics I much prefer the striped sweater to the lavender. Of course the lavender is a great color for you, and amazing with your hair. I might be swayed by the styling here -- I wouldn't send the lavender back before trying it with the bottoms you'll actually wear it with. IYKWIM.

LOVE to hear about the good quality/fabrication of these items. Renews a bit of my faith in retail. :-)

  • Suz replied 2 weeks ago

Thanks, all! Sarah, Helena's comment about these sweaters is dead right. I think the ones I'm looking at are slightly different from the previous seasons' (maybe thicker gauge knit?) but the point is, their silk/ cotton blend sweaters are well worth looking at if you find them at thrift, so keep an eye out. They don't pill, they drape nicely, and they are non-itchy. And I'm encouraged to hear her say they wear well.

I do have a fine gauge silk/cashmere sweater from them that I got in (I think?) 2017 that is still going strong.

Thanks for all the opinions. The differing views are always interesting (and helpful!). I need to check these sweaters over when I get back home and try them on in better light and with different items in my closet. I've ordered a few different sizes and colours for comparison. So we shall see! I'll report back in a week or so, when those arrive.

It seems there is a lot of love for the pants. I'm sure I'd wear them -- that's not an issue for me, as I wear trousers even on my work from home days. (Just not on my working-in-the-garden days.) And I do think Angie and a few others of you are right when you say this is a kind of perennial style -- goes in and out, but is iconic. I can see wearing them for a four years or so, and then packing them away (if big pants are not a thing for a while) only to revive them later. The adjustable waist means that the rise could be altered slightly depending on preferences. At the moment, I think they are at their highest waist look -- but I could adjust and wear them a bit lower.

  • SarahD8 replied 2 weeks ago

You know, the construction off the pants with the adjustable elastic could also contribute to their staying power...as they might fit better across some degree of size change. /Enabling

  • nuancedream replied 2 weeks ago

Love, love, love the trousers! Adore the tailored fluidity of them. I hear you about knitwear. I'm starting to get bored with some sweaters that I purchased just before the pandemic despite still being in good shape. The blue mock neck sweater and the striped one are perfection. Banana Republic has been off my radar for a while, maybe it's time to revisit them.

  • Joyce replied 2 weeks ago

More love for the pants, they are drama and comfort all in one. A note of caution: I purchased three Everlane Alpaca blend last year and am down to one. They shrank so badly in the wash they weren't recoverable. This isn't a problem I usually have so chocked it up to the reason the price was so inviting.

  • Suz replied 2 weeks ago

Joyce, thanks for that tip! I am also finding the alpaca a bit itchy, even though I love the light weight and drape of it. Mine's a blend, though, so it may fare better (or worse!) in the wash!

Sarah, I laughed out loud at your enabling comment. Very true!

  • Cookie replied 2 weeks ago

I can’t really give trouser advice but BR do make nice sweaters year after year, don’t they! I love the striped one and it seems like really your style, as does the cream one. (That size seems perfect … I would not size up.) I can see that being very handy and versatile. The blue also fits beautifully and seems like a lovely color for you. Not crazy about the lilac. It seems like it would be a lot of trouble trying to half-tuck it just so and the knot seems a bit bulky for that.

  • Jules replied 1 week ago

The fit of the lilac sweater doesn’t seem like the modern update you are looking for. The striped one is perfect so maybe size down if you want the lilac as well.

  • Jenni NZ replied 1 week ago

I said I would come back about the tops. I agree with Star- I love the blue and the stripe on you. I’m not keen on either the cream or the lilac, don’t feel they make you look luminous like the other two.

  • Janet replied 1 week ago

I like all of these on you! The sweaters are all really nice, if you’re eager for some modern classic updates. The lilac is pretty. The pants are brilliant and make me wish that pleated high-waisted styles looked better on me, but alas they just emphasize everything in my proportions that does not need emphasis, LOL.

  • Suz replied 1 week ago

Thanks all! I get home tomorrow so I will be able to try these on and compare to what is already in the closet to decide what to keep and what to return! Pretty sure I am keeping the pants and know I am keeping the blue sweater (since I am wearing it now, LOL.)

  • Brooklyn replied 1 week ago

Just chiming in to say that I love, love, love the pants and the blue mock neck sweater on you. The other sweaters are nice but not as stunning in my opinion.

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 1 week ago

The pants are swooshy fabness on you. I love the blue mock-neck sweater, the ivory henley, and the blue stripe sweater. I'm not as crazy about the lilac one, I think mostly because I like the neat and tidy fit of the striped one better.

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 1 week ago

I will add that I've been very tempted by those ribbed merino sweaters at Banana Republic this season. Just to add to the chorus of admiration for the quality and fit. I tried one on and loved it, but I wasn't sure I would use any of the colors offered. I can also attest to the quality of the silk-cotton crewneck. I have it in ivory. It's a good spring-summer-fall weight and warmth for me.
