Tale of a missing epaulette

So...remember when Rae got a trench coat with a missing epaulette?

I have this fantastic Theory trench coat (courtesy an incredibly generous YLF friend who was no longer wearing it, I may add.) I adore this coat. It has been an absolute workhorse for me this cool and damp spring.

The other day I noticed that one of the epaulettes has fallen off and disappeared. It probably happened on the weekend while I was travelling and carrying my bags over my shoulder. I was rushing around quite a lot.

The way I see it, I have 2 choices:

1. Take off the other epaulette and the belt-like loops that were supposed to keep them in place. This would not be difficult and would not leave any marks, and the coat would still look fine (IMO). There are other design details such as wrist bands, decorative pockets, and the classic belt. And these particular epaulettes are on the small side anyway.

2. Do what Rae did and take the existing epaulette apart to make a new one (using new fabric to supplement). I think my seamstress would probably be up to this task.

What are your thoughts?

YAY: Take the other one off and forget they were ever there.

NAY: Make a new version to maintain the coat's integrity as far as possible.

Take the remaning one off. Epaulettes bother me anyway. Fab trench!

  • sarah replied 10 years ago

Darn, it's hard to see, Suz - can you lighten the photo just for the purpose of letting us see the sole epaulette better? And isn't that bizarre?

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Okay -- brightened up a ton and cropped so they are sort of visible. Even now, they're hard to see.

  • Karie replied 10 years ago

Will it bother you not to have it there? I would remove the existing one, and if you don't mind not having it there, then it's all good. If you find that it bothers you not to have it there, you could then have a second one made and have them both sewn back on.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Karie, what an incredibly smart suggestion! Just save everything I have and then make the call later. It would have to be taken off in order to sew a new one anyway.

  • sarah replied 10 years ago

Thanks for humoring me, Suz. I think it's fine without. If you scroll through the Nordie's trenches, most don't have any, quite a few have just one (!), and only a handful have two.

  • Gaylene replied 10 years ago

Well, I adore epaulettes on a trench, so my answer would obviously be to replace the missing one if at all feasible.

But what is it with all these missing epaulettes--Rae, Claire, and now you. I've had several coats and jackets with epaulettes and never had a single one fall off--or even become loose. Buttons, yes, epaulettes, no. Could it be connected to global warming? Or a secret cabal dedicated to the elimination of epaulettes? I'm beginning to get suspicious.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

You are hilarious, Gaylene. I have never had this problem before, either. Maybe it is a secret YLF curse. So many good things here, the universe just has to throw some bizarre irritation in our way lest we get too happy and comfortable with our fashion brilliance!

  • Thistle replied 10 years ago

    I love Karie's idea!

  • Caro in Oz replied 10 years ago

Gaylene - I have to check mine now :)

Suz, If a replacement isn't too expensive I'd like to see the return of the epaulettes. Great trench.

  • bj1111 replied 10 years ago

I would fix the epaulette, because i love details like that.

I totally love love love that scarf color worn just so with that jacket. What is the pattern?

  • Eliza replied 10 years ago

Great trench. I'd echo Karie's remove and see what you think idea.

I don't know about epaulettes, but in the last 3 years I have had to re-sew buttons on multiple new coats, regardless of price point. They just were never done properly. Quite frustrating...

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

BJ, thank you -- the scarf is a polka dot but sort of a mod dot, if you know what I mean - the dots grow in size. I got it in China when I was there. And there's a border like a wide stripe, I guess.

Well, you have all given me food for thought. I shall examine the coat again tomorrow and make some decision. One thing I can say for sure is that I absolutely love the coat and I don't think my love for it will be diminished either way. But I was very frustrated to see that the epaulette had disappeared!

  • qfbrenda replied 10 years ago

    As an IT I lean towards anti-epaulette.  :)  I like Katie's idea.

  • rae replied 10 years ago

I'm just a fiend for epaulettes, so I'd fix it. However, I guess I should mention that I was not able to turn one side into two - my epaulette wasn't the same width on the underside. We had to take the wrist straps off of my sleeves and make two new ones from those.

  • Scarlet replied 10 years ago

How bizarre. How can the whole thing just go missing like that? I would replace it and also write a letter to Theory to complain about it. For their prices one could expect an epaulette to remain attached. What is the world coming to?

  • jennifer replied 10 years ago

There's always option #3 Pretend it always was and was meant to be a single epauletted coat. That's probably what I'd do .That or just take the remaining one off .Honestly unless you use it to put a scarf/shawl through , it doesn't seem very ..visible . The design detail isn't really noticeable in the photo even when brightened up.

Just to say that I enjoyed this thread and love the coat! (Either way :) )

Hey there Suz, It was me who suggested to Claire (clearlyclaire) about using one epaulette to make another from it, when she got the Celine trench. I think she did quite a good job herself and she was pleased that she kept the integrity of the coat. To be honest it is just a matter of choice and if you aren't too bothered just cut off the remaining one.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Weirdly, I'd forgotten that Claire's Celine was also missing an epaulette when she got it. (I guess it looked so perfect on her that I could not believe there was even the tiniest flaw!)

I will hunt down her thread, too, then.

Jennifer, yours is the one idea that absolutely would not work for me.For another type of person this would work just fine. But the "polished" (or maybe anal retentive) side of me  shudders at the thought.

Scarlet, it was sewn on and the attachment came loose, and it is slippery fabric - and I was carrying heavy bags and switching things around on my shoulders. I think it's understandable, in a way. Plus the coat is not brand new. It is an "already loved" item.

Rae, that is helpful to remember. Thank you. I don't want to take the armbands off mine since for me they are super useful -- I actually use them to "scrunch" the sleeves. Whereas the epaulettes are purely decorative.

Off to re-read Claire's thread to see how she did it.

  • Hil replied 10 years ago

I think it could go without the epaulettes easily. Karrie's suggestion is a good one! I had a coat that my dog got hold of and chewed the band around the wrist. My tailor managed to recreate a piece so cleverly that I never even missed the old wrist band.

  • Raisin replied 10 years ago

What's with you people? I wear epaulettes every day on my uniform and manage not to loose any!

Ok joking aside, I would just ditch the other one. Clearly you can't take care of them anyway (Ha ha!). :)

  • TraceyLiz65 replied 10 years ago

I would fix it as having that missing detail would bother me... I think it depends how strongly you feel about those kinds of details on this piece.

  • lyn67 replied 10 years ago

I didn't know about Rae's epoulette DIY strategy, but totally Nay-so i would surely fix it!:-)
Great coat, and love the ideea, I learned a great thing again here, today!

  • Glory replied 10 years ago

My first option would be to try and retain the original composition. If your seamstress can do it - that would be wonderful. Maybe have her stitch them down really well :)
On the other hand, if you are not a lover of shoulder tabs then you could simply remove
