Taupe Breaking News: Celia Sends Silk! (and some questions)

I have been laughing myself silly over the ridiculous puns we have all been making, and couldn't resist yet another.

Just when I thought my wardrobe couldn't be tauped, the sweet, generous, and thoughtful Celia sent me a package. Inside, this beautiful taupe silk top from Cassis.

Thank you, Celia!! This is a really beautiful top, in a style that I didn't previously own, from a store that I am so sad to have lost! Cassis had the BEST things, and when they still existed my budget was such that I never could buy from them. So I am triply thrilled to have this piece.

Here it is; on the front it looks like a stain but it just shadows there for reasons unknown.

As you can see, it is longer in back than in front. The back view shows why I find tunics tough to wear. They shorten my already short legs. Would this work better with darker jeans not cuffed, do you think, or is it just too long for me, period?

I am also showing it with my Halogen seamed skirt, and here I have another question: Which booties work better? Could I wear the black ones sans hose as long as I am wearing my glasses (or add a scarf with some black up top?) Would the blonde ones work better when I am not wearing my specs? If I wear the black ones with hose, I assume I would need to bookend with something up top, correct?

ETA: while I don't love the back view, isn't it interesting the way my hair actually matches the shirt?

    Hi Suz --

How lovely of Celia and how beautiful that top's shimmering taupe looks on you!

My personal preferences, based on similar body type and accompanying desires to leg-lengthen much of the time, ignore if desired:

    * hem the back to mid-derriere

    * pale booties with bare legs, dark with hose

    * with skirt, dark/black up top only if desired (that taupe is dark enough that I don't think you need to fret about imbalance)

  • Angie replied 8 years ago

Stunningly beautiful top on you, Suz! Celia is a big honey :)

I like this shade of taupe on you more because it has depth - shine and is a little darker.

I vote black booties as is on bare legs.

  • rae replied 8 years ago

Ooh, so lovely! And look at you all aboard with the hi-low trend to boot! Celia gets major shopping karma.

I love this top with the shorter hemline and with the black. I think it'll look amazing with some denim skinnies as well. Maybe even the BF jeans... but then I want to pair BF jeans with everyone's everything these days. ;)

  • MsMary replied 8 years ago

Gorgeous! I love how that beautiful, uh, taupe is longer in back! ;)

  • Transcona Shannon replied 8 years ago

What a sweetheart that Celia is! This is lovely on you Suz - I don't think it needs shortening in the back although I wouldn't want it any longer. The deeper colour and sheen are just gorgeous on you.

  • Claudia replied 8 years ago

    Beautiful top, beautiful on you.

    Beautiful of Celia.

    Black boots w/skirt.

  • Gaylene replied 8 years ago

Love that top! Celia is a genius to have found it for you. And I don't think you need to hem the back unless you plan to wear it with rolled, white jeans quite a bit. To my eye, it's the horizontal lines created by the cuffed white jean, bare skin, and booties-- just too many leg shortening effects in a single outfit when coupled with a longer back in the tunic. But, if you are OK with a shorter leg look in this one outfit, I'd just leave the top alone because otherwise the eye is drawn to the beautiful drape in the back.

  • celia replied 8 years ago

I am so glad it fits you and you look gorgeous with it :) (and the taupe puns are the best)

I find the color so gorgeous on you that I have no opinion whatsoever about lenghts .

  • KathyL replied 8 years ago

I'm with gaylene, I think the white jeans are the issue, not the length of the top. I like the length in the back, would look good with skinny dark/black jeans. I love the skirt with the black booties. So sweet of Celia to send this to you!

  • Charmian replied 8 years ago

I adore that top! I bet it feels wonderful against the skin, too.

I actually don't find the tunic shortening on its own -- I think we've all over-tuned our eyes to see our own personal flaws. If you're looking to lengthen the leg line, I would avoid high-contrast tops-n-bottoms OR a high-contrast cuffing. You don't need to avoid both!

I am mourning Cassis too, even if I never got to shop there. I came across their website and was blown away. Although you're right, it was a bit pricey for my bargain basement budget. I was so hoping they would open up a shop here so I could at least check their clearance racks. Oh well. It would have been shopping my imaginary lifestyle anyway...

That was so sweet of Celia to send you that blouse. It is great! I would follow the advice up-thread, and try it with dark, unrolled pants before leaping to the conclusion that it needs shortening. This is a sweet outfit, and I really like it on you. I wouldn't worry about the rear view. I sincerely doubt anybody would see you on the street and think "oh what short legs".

I personally can't decide between the boots. They both look fine to me.

Wow, Celia is such a good fashion fairy-godmother! This is a wonderful taupe (!) and in silk, one our your favorites. I think it is very attractive in this fabrication. I love the subtle sheen on you, very rich. I'm still getting used to these long hi-lo tops. They look very long to me in back, but they *are* trending. Angie says they're okay so they must be all right!

  • replied 8 years ago

What a great find, and so sweet of Celia! I like it with the skirt, and I would say black booties bare legs also.

  • deb replied 8 years ago

Black skirt + black booties = WOW!! Love the taupe top.

  • catgirl replied 8 years ago

Honestly, I don't see short legs. Whose legs are not shortened by a tunic? I think it can give the impression that your waist is higher, since you don't see the crotch break (or whatever the rear equivalent is - let's not go there). I think you look fantastic, and I'd go with the black booties for sure. You don't always have to bookend - the lighter boots actually look a little off to me with the black skirt.

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

Thanks, everybody. The bootie (and booty) wisdom is especially appreciated. I think the black booties with bare legs stumpify my legs...but I tend to agree that it's more balancing with a black or very dark skirt, even when a person's hair is lighter. This is why we need so many footwear options, right? <insert wicked grin>

I think I will leave the silk top at the current length and try it with darker jeans to see how I feel. I might tend to wear it more often with a skirt anyway, and there the length does not bother me.

By the way, this taupe is almost identical to the sweater, but because the sweater is sheer, it reads as lighter, I can make it appear a bit darker with a dark cami underneath; yesterday I went for a light one because I was wearing the white jeans.

You look so COOL with that taupe silk, the skirt and black boots! Wonderful fabric and color on you, Suz. I love this taupic!

  • nancylee replied 8 years ago

Really gorgeous, Suz. I'm jealous of that beautiful blouse! (and also of your newfound color focus...)

I love it with either the taupe or black booties. They both work IMO. :)

  • Scarlet replied 8 years ago

This top looks wonderful on you! I can't decide about the booties with the black skirt. On the one hand I think both work, although my favorite option in my head might be the black with sheer patterned black tights, but on the other hand I am so enamored of the taupe shirt with the white pants, that I can't properly consider the black, even though this top definitely works with black. Sorry, it's all stream of conscious, all the time with me tonight, it seems. What a sweetie, Celia is :)

  • Debbie replied 8 years ago

Black booties and what a thoughtful thing to do!

  • CocoLion replied 8 years ago

I think this looks taupe-notch on you. Relative to my height, my legs aren't short. But, when I wear tunics and cropped pants, my legs look short. It's just part of the package. You could unroll the pants so they just skim the top of the booties, that will help elongate the line a bit. And yes, pants that are closer in color value to the top will also elongate. I vote keep this taupe!

  • Isabel replied 8 years ago

I am loving the puns and the clothes and the looks...just the whole darn thing.

  • DeclawedJaguar replied 8 years ago

Love the top as is, no changes needed whatsoever. And the black booties work best with the black skirt. You know, Suz, you keep talking about short legs and having to elongate the leg line, and every time I struggle to see what it is you're seeing. Your legs are proportional and look perfect for your body. Please show them off and don't worry about a thing!

  • Ornella replied 8 years ago

Good grief Suz! It just gets better for you, doesn't it? I've red a few threads only over the last few weeks and among them one where you sported a lot of taupe and I'm smitten, even more so because I tried one top in what was probably taupe too and was devastated there was no my size available.

I love everything about #1: the taupe, the top and the taupe top :-)
    And the white bottoms.
    And your cool frames.

    You simply look spectacular!

And Celia... well, she's wonderful, as simple as that.

  • JulieJohn replied 8 years ago

Please don't ever wear this top because you might cause neck damage to people craning to get one last glimpse of beautiful you!

I like the lighter booties best, they just look really cool with that outfit. I covered one half, then the other, and that's what my eyes told me.

Put this one on your Taupe 10 list!

  • bionda replied 8 years ago

I love this beautiful top on you just as it is. It looks like you've found your fashion u-taupe-ia!

  • lynn replied 8 years ago

I love this--don't hem it! I like the black booties and your legs are great! No stumpification at all.

  • Carole replied 8 years ago

Just GorGEOUS! I'm so envious of your newfound color confidence.

  • Joy replied 8 years ago

Fabulous! I love it just as it is. It looks elegant -meets-arty. The soft silk could always be tucked for a change. Celia is a sweetie.
