The Sleeper Workhorse

Over on  my other thread, Star asked what a "sleeper workhorse" is.

I might just have invented the term, I don't know. But here's how I answered her: A sleeper workhorse is an item that may seem a bit difficult to style on first purchase, but shows its worth more and more over the course of a few years. Trendy bottoms are almost always sleeper workhorses for me. I may or may not wear them often during their first year in my closet. By year two, though, they are in full swing, constant rotation. This is a pattern for me. Fashion-forward bottoms that I like, even if I can't quite figure out how best to wear them initially, almost always turn out to be long-lasting durable items in my closet.

Examples -- I started wearing cropped wide legs in -- I think -- 2016. They are far from fashion forward now but the style has worked for me well. I started wearing barrel style pants in 2020. Cargos, ditto. Full length wide legs in 2021 or 2022. All the items below have more than proved their worth.

Maybe sleeper workhorses go along with being an early adopter? You need to find the right complements for them and sometimes that takes a while.

How about you? Do you have categories of item that become sleeper workhorses? Or specific items that surprise you? Maybe, like Dee, you find them in your "donate" pile and rescue them>

My most notable sleeper workhorse was a pair of polished knit wide-leg pants from J Jill. I bought them at least 12 years ago, when I still wore heels, but even then the heel height required was too much for me. After several years of leaving them in the closet and almost donating, I had them cropped to a longer culotte length.

Boom - suddenly, I wore them all the time. Like, ALL the time. The waistband stretched beyond salvaging about a year ago and then I did let them go.

Racking my brain, but can't think of any sleeper workhorse categories in my wardrobe. Generally I wear things a lot when I first get them, but if I don't, the wears stay low. I'm not an early adopter though!

Thanks for the thoughts, Suz. Interesting examples that make sense. When you wake up a workhorse by having the right support act, it WORKS!

I personally don't experience this with bottoms. I'm an early adopter of bottoms trends, and milk them right away.

That said, I've experienced the sleeper workhorse phenomenon with some toppers!

    1. Peachy Toffee Moto: Had it for years. Wore it regularly. Over the last few years, I wear it A LOT more now that my hair is darker, and have toffee shoes and belt. It's a hard working workhorse.

    2. Blush '70s Jacket: That's new this Spring, and I didn't think I'd wear it that much. I almost returned it. Asked hubs Greg what he thought of the colour - and he loved it. Turns out I reach for it sooo much more than I thought I would because it works extremely well with blues, whites, and sour brights, and my pink specs! It's VERY versatile for transitional weather.

    3. Denim Blazer: This is 15 years old, and was seldom worn. Turns out I need to wear it with a slippery long silk blouse to work - (less friction on the sleeves) - and now I have a lot of the right blouses!

Interesting! I'll have to give this some thought. I think I've experienced this but not in a particular category - more randomly. But as you say Suz, it's probably when I buy something I like but then need a little time to work out how best to wear it.

Actually , I’m in the same boat as you Suz , which would not have occurred to me prior to reading your take on this . I have a large collection of bottoms because of this “ early adoption and later frequent use “ issue ….and I rarely get rid of anything now until I’ve figured out how I want to wear it .

  • Irina replied 7 months ago

Nothing comes to mind. I’m not an early adopter to the new styles. Usually, I buy something that is in between styles to get my eye adjusted. Like wearing tapered jeans before buying a barrel leg one. If I don’t wear something soon, more likely it is a buying mistake.

I am often a slow adopter of new styles, but once I commit, I'm all in. Wide legs are a great example, I purchased one pair of wide leg jeans to try it out and rarely wore them. Then I finally figured out HOW to wear them (cropped tops or knitwear, or tucking), and now wide legs are a favorite of mine. I own wide legs in every type of bottom (business trousers, jeans, linen, and activewear). My current collection of wide legs is in the finds. :)

    These would be my closest.

The lilac dress was added on a whim really but it has become a really useful work dress in summer.  I don't love it layered so I wear it when I don't have to bother with toppers.

Both light blouses have become more worn as I went on.  The lacy one became really useful with jeans or more masculine pants - like the juxtaposition.  And the long sleeve one has been more worn each year - it is a lovely silk so very nice to wear.

All have earnt their place solidly now....which is a good feeling.

It's really interesting how for some of us it is specific items that finally found their place and for others it is a type of item.

I will say that I actually have experienced both -- the completer or even statement item I don't wear a whole lot in its first year, but suddenly it works better for me than I imagined -- my thrifted Paul Smith jacket was one of those -- i just didn't have the right weather or enough of the right bottoms the first year! Or the right occasions!

With bottoms, I didn't express myself correctly, really -- I am a fairly early adopter of most trendy bottoms (assuming they suit me and I like them) and I will wear them quite a lot in their first season -- but then they have longevity in the closet more than I might have predicted, simply because I bought them early on. So maybe they aren't true "sleepers" most of the time.

I see my wardrobe as like a wine collection. I pick up interesting vintages when I find them, but sometimes they have to age a bit longer, or the right occasion has to occur, or my palette has to shift, before they are ready to be uncorked :) . Ok I overstretched the analogy but since my wardrobe building process is actually very different than the norm, it sort of works.

I’m more inclined to put new items into immediate rotation and get the highest wear in the first year.  A few items have garnered more wears in later years, but not many.

i was ‘influenced’ back in 2021 after reading an article on the POW style that featured some ‘look a-likes’ and bought the LLBean field jacket below in finds.  I wore it a few times, but thought maybe I had made a mistake.  It got a bit of wear for a short period of time every spring, but more in fall.

For some reason unknown to me, it became my go-to all spring - and still is on cooler days.  Now it’s a bit faded and actually shows some sun bleaching patterns - but I’m holding on to it.  When I pointed out the fading - DH volunteered: ‘that’s the way field jackets are supposed to look!’

The thrifted burgundy bag is also a late bloomer, and getting ++ wear in the past year - 18 months.

Mine is usually whatever classic item is trending: Lady jackets! Ballet flats! Loafers! Structured handbags! Belts!

My dark floral shirt, suede booties and cognac bag have been in my wardrobe for years and yet still feel current. I am particularly liking them this season with wide leg jeans and my new winter toppers.

I think some of mine became workhorses because of my wear counting. I would be trying to get some older items nearer to #30 wears, things I liked but for whatever reason wasn’t wearing enough, and then as I did that would realise how good they actually were, and they would race past the 30 number. One was a sort of tweed jacket, petite cut, excellent fit, from 2013. It has black, grey and red in it and I wear enough red that it is an excellent topper. I have no idea why I didn’t wear it more earlier! I really like it.

Thanks for the explanation Suz! This does happen to me sometimes I think, although nothing comes to mind right now. Interesting concept you have identified.

Such an interesting read.  For me these sneakers - the 1st year I got them they felt really out there, and I wore them but they definitely were not  my go to. Now I’ll plan outfits around these sneakers.
