Trip Report: On the streets and in the shops

This trip I was very much focused on spendiing meaningful time with Mr. Suz, so shopping was not a priority. I didn't buy anything for myself. But I did enjoy window shopping and people-watching! I didn't photograph anybody on the street, but I did take snaps in stores and of shop windows. First, here's my impression of what people were wearing:

  • Sneakers. Sneakers. Sneakers. No surprise there. I did see some sandals on the hot days -- mostly Birkenstock type or other flatforms. I think I only saw a couple of pairs of heels, and those were boots. Even in the financial district, quite a few people wore fashion sneakers with their suits.
  • Raincoats. Again, no surprise. This was London, after all! And it's been an unusually wet year. Mostly I noticed trenches, but anoraks and utility coats were popular as well.
  • Light wash wide leg full-length denim. Mostly on younger women.
  • The skirt of the year -- mid-axi or maxi denim skirts with slits. Also mostly on younger women.
  • Slouchy looks in jackets -- some blazers, some bombers. Quite oversized.
  • On the hot days -- maxi dresses in white, off-white, or large-scale florals. Again, on the younger women. Some dresses were off the shoulder.  Some were dragging on the ground and I worried they'd get caught in the escalators at the tube! But I remember doing  many silly things for fashion in my own youth. :)

In the shops -- most stores were exhibiting high summer wear: lightweight linens and floral dresses. I wasn't really tempted by anything because it is quite easy for me to get this sort of thing in North America.

# 1. Window of a shop I would have liked to have gone into. Interesting sculptural shapes to the clothes. Heavy linens. Small boutique I think near Covent Garden.

# 2-3. In the National Portrait Gallery -- Vivian Westwood. The first photo is a portrait in her garden; the second shows her surrounded by a new generation of artists, designers, and rebels.

#4 I went into Selfridges to browse. Such a beautiful store. This display of cashmere wowed me with the quality and the prices, which I won't even begin to quote.

#5. I loved this Erdem suit. But again, look at the price! Even on sale....https://erdem.com/products/sin....._r1j7_muwc

#6 The orange suit and the beautiful floral skirt also caught my eye. https://erdem.com/collections/.....s-trousers

#7 And the gorgeous party dresses!

#8. Snapped a selfie while in one of the in-store shops. Curve jeans.

#9. I loved the Alexander McQueen display -- right up my alley.

#10 The fab orange suit made me think of Angie -- Stella McCartney.

# 11 Issey Miyake. I saw lots and lots of green in evidence, along with orange, in almost all the shops.

#12 The jumpsuit also made me think of Angie. It would look terrific on her, no?

#13  The majestic entrance to the store.

#14-15. Moving on to John Lewis. Scottie bags for JAileen.  :)

#16-17.  Colourful hat display.

#18.  I kind of loved this colour blocked dress. Any of those hats might have worked with it!

#19.  A book that some of us might enjoy. I know I'm going to hunt down a copy! As an undergrad I wrote an essay about Virginia Woolf's attitudes toward clothes.

#20-22 Mr. Suz examining the beautiful wares at Japan House in Kensington, and some more of their displays.

Thanks, Suz! Great report. Fab pics!

I'm nodding along with your street style impressions. That's what I've been seeing on my trips too.

    SNEAKERS EVERYWHERE!!!

Fun to go window shopping with you! Good to see dapper Mr. Suz, and how sweet to be thought of! I'll take the orange pants suit and jumpsuit, thank you :) - you can have the McQueen collection!

Looking KILLER in #8! Fit right in with your sneakers.

Excellent and interesting report! Since Angie already (correctly) mentioned how dapper Mr. Suz looks I will add snazzy! You also look just fab with the curve jeans and silver sneakers Suz. I just love the portrait of Vivian Westwood. And that book is intriguing, I will check it out too. Great photos and I am glad you are having a good trip.

What a fun report and photos! You are Mr. Suz are a stylish couple. I read a review of that book a while back in The New Yorker. Sounded very interesting.

Oh!  Were there any signs of the. Chelsea Flower Show?  Your visit coincided with the event I believe (May 21-25).

I love to travel with fellow fabbers!  I don’t get jet lag, but still see amazing sights, do some window shopping and people watch.

Sneakers do seem to be taking over the world!  And I’m not complaining

I'm sure you were the most stylish travellers-thanx for posting these-was fun to go  windowshop with/through your eyes! Vivienne was a true rebell and loved that portrait of her!

Thanks for the report. I see here, in Toronto, similar trends. And sneakers are everywhere :)

  • pirouette replied 4 months ago

Similar trends in Dublin plenty of rainwear and sneakers. Wide leg jeans are mostly worn by the young girls. I noticed the same in Cannes and Berlin when I was there in January and February. Older women seem to stick to the straighter jeans.

Carla, our visit did indeed coincide with the show. I considered going. But entry was expensive and it wasn't Mr. Suz's cup of tea, and I didn't want to spend the day away from him since the trip was really a celebration for him. So we forewent the show. However, on one day when I took a few hours to myself I ran into some people on the tube who were leaving the show with bags FULL of plants and we had quite a conversation about it. They said they got deals on the plants by bargaining with some people who'd had them as part of their displays of firepits and similar. :)

I did go to Regent's Park to see Queen Mary's rose gardens. And of course we saw plenty of other gardens in bloom.

Kkards -- so true! Travel without the jet lag -- a brilliant idea!

Interesting!  Thanks for sharing.  My DH noticed that nearly everyone wears sneakers in our closest city here on the Black Sea too.  It certainly seems to be a world wide phenomena.  And yes the youngsters are in wide jeans and older woman are in straights.  Still skinnies across all ages too.

  • Suz replied 4 months ago

I only saw a few skinnies in London and those were worn on the wet days and possibly by tourists. Older women that I saw weren't wearing denim so much but if they were, they were darker wash straights or wide-ish straights, not the light wash denim the kids preferred. The older women were wearing different trousers and skirts (for the most part). On the warmer days, there were a lot of floral dresses in evidence on the older crowd. Some younger girls in minis on the warm days as well, but more in maxi length dresses.

Interesting to hear your thoughts on London street fashion and see all your lovely photos.Sounds like you are having a lovely time

  • Olive Green replied 4 months ago

That colour block dress would be lovely on you. Thank you for the photos and observations!

Suz, I love how you had conversations with strangers — e.g. the people carrying plants on the Tube and the woman with the twin raincoat. My dad and I do the same when traveling, much to the amazement of friends and family. We lived in Germany last year. My mom came for a visit and I took her on a Hop on, Hop off tour of Berlin. She asked me to inquire something of the bus driver and was consternated when I returned over 10 minutes later after having had a conversation about the cost of living in Germany, the challenges of caring for elderly parents, and reproductive rights in Poland — 100% initiated by the Polish (male) bus driver.

Suz, this was fun to read.  Thanks for sharing your adventures with us, I smiled when reading about the long maxis dragging on the ground.  As a sneaker fan myself, I am happy to hear about the increasing popularity of sneakers. You and Mr. Suz look very stylish.
