Trip Report: What I (and others) wore

I'm back from my trip to London and Vienna. We had a wonderful time. It did not hurt that the weather was sensational in London. We had one day of cool and cloudy skies but no real rain and the rest of the week the skies were clear and bright and the temperatures warm.

I was not able to snap photos of people on the streets/ tube etc. but I did keep my eyes open. Of course, for parts of each day we were in very touristy areas, and so clothing is not terribly representative. But I saw a surprising number of skinny jeans on women of all ages. Trainers on almost everybody, with the odd pair of sandals on the warmest days. Lots of black, of course, but also lots of light neutrals and plenty of light denim. Lots of printed, boho-lite or light neutral summery dresses on the weekend. Shop windows were full of handkerchief hems on skirts and dresses (they seem to be enjoying a resurgence), along with many tiny squarish bags in the Bond Street and Regent Street shops.

In Vienna, the weather was uncharacteristically much cooler and cloudier than in London. We basically got London weather in Austria. However, the shop windows -- and the people -- were generally dressed more colourfully. Lots of beautiful coloured shoes! Mostly flat loafers in the windows but people were also wearing a lot of trainers. Many people wearing blazers in lovely lightweight tweeds and linen on work days. More business dress, less athleisure on the streets and in the tram except on teens and 20-somethings and tourists.

As for me, I wore the heck out of my clothes and felt comfortable and appropriate in all my outfits. MVPs included my thrifted Paul Smith blazer (so much love for this jacket), my very wide leg lightweight wool BR pants (soooo easy to dress up and down, denim jacket, Theory vest and pants, and my Cole Haan platform oxfords.

Here's a link to my capsule. Apart from my skirt and two dressy sleeveless tops, I wore everything at least once, including my white jeans, which got two wears. I had planned to wear my skirt and one sleeveless top to the opera  and another dressy sleeveless top to a nicer dinner or to the theatre if it was warm enough but weather did not cooperate, so I was glad to have an alternative prepared.

We saw three plays (including one musical -- Hamilton -- for our kid, who was over the moon about going), and in Vienna Mr. Suz and I went to the opera (Tosca!) and to a concert -- Vienna Philharmonic and a huge chorus conducted by Riccardo Muti playing Mozart's Jupiter symphony. In both cases we were sitting more or less in the rafters but the sound and the settings were amazing. We saw so many galleries/ museums I swear I have eye strain and will need months to process it all. So now it is time for laundry!

I apologize for the quality of the photos.

1 and 2 -- the Paul Smith in action in two different outfits.

3- 7. -- arcade and shop windows around Piccadilly/ Bond St., Regent St.

8-11  shop windows in Vienna.

12  Pastries -- as pretty as the shoes!

13-15  at the opera.

The buildings are magnificent and a bit overwhelming (the scale is hard to convey in photos) but I may put some pics of these in the off-topic section in the next few days. :)

Wonderful to hear that you had a terrific trip. Happy the weather cooperated and that your wardrobe served you so well. Love all the fashion photos, and those colourful loafers and flats look so fun to wear. That blazer combo is fab, great group photo too. You look so elegant in your opera outfit and your hair looks smashing.

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 6 months ago

Wow, you are stunning in your opera outfit, Suz! And super fab in all the others, too. Your blazer is a travel workhorse--definitely a piece to dress down or up! I love the shop windows--what a feast for the eyes. The handbags in the windows really catch my eye--I always see the best handbags in Europe. I don't know why it's so hard to find a similar understated style in US shops. I must be living on the wrong continent. LOL!

Great report, super pics, and smashingly fun trip! Bonus that the weather was mostly blissful. Welcome back :)

You look KILLER gorgeous in your blue, white and silver travel capsule, Suz! Beautifully pulled together, pattern mixed, practical, and elegant! Good job bringing the right items.

Mr. Suz has awesome hat style!

We are living in the sneakers (trainers!) fashion era. I don't see it changing. Sneakers are without doubt the most sold and worn type of shoe on the planet.

As Queen Loafer - I am most pleased with your shop window report!

  • MsMaven replied 6 months ago

Wow--you indeed look fabulous throughout. Your blazer outfits and your opera outfit are so great for you. And inspirational, especially your colors and how they all blend so well.

  • Cookie replied 6 months ago

What a wonderful trip! And you look great in all your clothes. I especially like the scarf/blazer outfit and your silver opera shoes!

  • Jaime replied 6 months ago

Fantastic report and by the sounds of it trip! Is that Mr. Suz's daughter in the group picture (it sure looks like she could be!)? Anyway, you all look absolutely fabulous there. I think Paul Smith deserves a lot more attention - I am always impressed when I see their jackets and yours is no exception. Interesting about the skinnies - I thought it was just here. I will be checking for more pics in the OT. Welcome home!

Sounds like a lovely trip and you were so lucky to have clear skies in London! That's awesome! It's a nice city to visit.

Your travel capsule was superb and you did a most excellent job assembling a well used capsule, bravo! Silver, white and blues are lovely on you.

Thanks for the report on trends too, it's always fun to hear what others are wearing! And what's being offered in the stores.

  • RachelNZ replied 6 months ago

So impressed by how put together you look for travelling! A great trip report and glad you had a lovely time :)

  • missvee replied 6 months ago

Your outfits are both so good, particularly your very elegant opera look.

I just returned a beautiful Paul Smith blazer to Simon’s. The quality was exceptional but sadly the fit was way off.

  • Brooklyn replied 6 months ago

Wow, you look gorgeous at the opera. Certainly living up to your “radiant” moniker. I’m glad you had a great trip. Thank you for sharing.

  • Olive Green replied 6 months ago

Wonderful photos. My highest compliments to your capsule, you never look like you are traveling! You know, like you lived there and had all the proper pieces for occasions, no disheveled add-ons, and the opera look is really you, the silver accents.

  • Carol replied 6 months ago

Thanks for all the updates--it is always nice to know what is going on in Europe. Especially love those tweed  and linen blazers--I love a more textured blazer. Your snappy silver combo in the last couple photos reminds me I really want to get a couple more silver accessories! You do it well.

  • Irina replied 6 months ago

Thank you for your report, Suz!
    You looked fab!
I will keep your observations in mind when I travel to Vienna this fall. You already made me think about bringing a blazer :)

  • JAileen replied 6 months ago

You look fab, especially with your blue jacket, and going to the opera (silver!).  And how lucky WRT weather in London.  I’ve never been to Vienna, but I bet their symphony was wonderful.  We have a philharmonic (The Phil) here in the sticks, and we have season tickets.  We sit the last row of the balcony.  But the acoustics are great, and I take my little binoculars and look at the musicians while playing.

  • RobinF replied 6 months ago

Fabulous trip! You look perfect! We are going to be in London in August - can't wait! I need to stock up on my sneakers and denim (no skinnies for me!) :)

  • Suz replied 6 months ago

Lisa, thank you. Silver white and blue are definitely my fall-back, signatures and also almost the entire contents of my closet!

Jaime, you spotted it! Yes, that is Mr. Suz's daughter. We went there specifically to visit her in her new home. That's her partner with us, too. It was really great to see her settled after many years of less than satisfying relationships. This one is the keeper. :)

Paul Smith is mainly known for men's stuff but the women's is gorgeous too. In the duty free at airport I saw the spring lines .. the colours were not right for me and I wasn't in a position to spend that kind of money, but I have a sharp eye peeled at second hand stores for more of his stuff, for sure. Ditto for our buddy Dries. :) I also wore the Dries pants multiple times this trip.

Cookie, thanks. That cheap H&M scarf is a complete workhorse.

Ms. Maven, thank you. I still hope I get a chance to wear the skirt outfit sometime...alas, it couldn't be on this trip.

Angie, thank you and I will pass along the hat compliment to Mr. Suz. And aren't those loafers gorgeous? We didn't really have time this trip for me to shop and try on, but if I go back, I think I will have to make a purchase if I can get a halfway decent fit on a pair. Also, the Loden style jackets in linen were beautiful and I imagine the tweeds are also lovely. They came in various cuts -- some short like my Paul Smith.

Sharon, thank you. The blazer was such a lucky find. I could never afford it at retail. Someone had offloaded it I think because it was the start of the era of oversized blazers and this one is a bit shrunken. But I know the cropped shrunken look works best for me, so I jumped at it. The workmanship is brilliant.

Dee, thank you! I thought of your bright green jacket when I saw those green items in the shop windows in Vienna!

  • Suz replied 6 months ago

Robin, you can definitely wear sneakers anywhere (almost!) in London. I mean, I wouldn't recommend them if you have an audience with King Charles, but otherwise....if August is hot, I predict you'll see more dresses and skirts than denim and maybe more wide legs generally because they are airier. But that was one thing that interested me -- we were there on very warm days (one day I actually had to put on my sarong shorts, it was so warm) but some people were still in skinnies! It may have been an anomaly, though. I didn't notice so many skinnies on my last visit.

JAileen, we used to own opera glasses but we could not find them -- and we didn't realize you could rent them until we were already seated and it was a long way back to the rental desk, LOL. I would have liked a better view. But next time. Tickets were very expensive and our budget didn't extend to nearer seats, plus we left the purchase a bit late so there were limited seats left.

Irina, you will fit right in, in Vienna. You can't really tell but one of those darker photos shows a store that sells gorgeous (but very pricey) avant garde styles. Gorgeous gorgeous stuff and right up your alley. Of course there is also plenty of traditional Austrian clothing, too. But mostly what I saw on real life people was what we'd call Euro-chic -- dressier than North America but still extremely practical. Good quality, nice cuts on clothing. Attention to detail. I think you would be wise to bring a trench coat or similar, and a variety of other toppers from casual to slightly more dressy. No heels. The cobblestones would be killer. I also highly recommend springing for several musical events while there -- it's really what Vienna is all about and you feel it in the air when you are in the theatres. It's an honour to be in the midst of such rapt, attentive, and appreciative yet critical audiences. They know their music!

Thank you, Carol. Silver is my thing!

Olive Green, that is a lovely compliment and I am blushing. Thank you. It's basically my aim -- to try to feel like I belong (although I don't try to deny I am a tourist, I do often get asked directions by natives!)

    Brooklyn, thank you!

MissVee, so sad to have to send it back but vital if the fit was off! A good decision!

  • Karie replied 6 months ago

Gorgeous travel wardrobe! It sounds like it was perfectly suited for the weather and the events of each day.
Hubs and I are leaving in two weeks for Norway and Belgium and I am taking notes on what to pack from your wardrobe choices.

  • Sal replied 6 months ago

You look terrific and so put together.

Such a tonic to fill your cup! Pleased you could absorb art music culture and fashion.

Skinny jeans have never fully gone away here - they have some very loyal fans.

  • Suz replied 6 months ago

Sal, yes -- it seems skinnies still retain more popularity than I realized. I really only see wide legs here now, or baggy straights. But then as a university lecturer, I work with young people, which may skew my perceptions a bit.

Karie, that sounds like a fabulous trip! I would love to visit Norway. I am betting you might want some casual hiking type outfits there since you will probably hike. Cities will be chic, though! And same in Belgium.

  • Laurie replied 6 months ago

Suz! You look just fabulous. I love Mr Suz's daughter's dress for the opera also (what is that neckline/drape called? More than a portrait collar...anyway I love it).
What a wonderful onslaught of culture. When I was in my 20's I went to 5 shows in 3 days in London! I could not get enough of it.

  • Kyle replied 6 months ago

Suz, you look like a chic city dweller not an international traveler living out of a suitcase. All of your wardrobe planning for this trip really paid off. I’m thrilled you were able to see so many shows! One of my most precious memories is when my son and I attended a symphony performance in Vienna (followed by some late night linzer torte, of course). I hope your experiences were equally magical.

  • lyn67 replied 6 months ago

It was a feast to see picties from yout trip in London and Vienna Suz (my heart warmed up a bit learning you were visiting Vienna especially which is closer than 100 km to my place:-)) and your travel capsule was so very spot on! Great to be able to window shop a bit with You and am happy you were able to see shows at the Opera & Vienna Philharmonic and  visit so many museums and galeries (which I never have enough time to do despite living so close to "the source"..:-()!

Loved your stylish (not at all tourist looking!) but very practical first 2 outfits and the one worn at the opera is gorgeous and so very You: fab blues and the silver accessories matching your silver fox hair! You are such a great family crowd in the nr 13! Loved that big cowl neck cream knit dress on the lady with the fab ashy curls, too!!!

  • Suz replied 6 months ago

Ahh, thank you, Lyn! i was thrilled to visit that part of the world for the very first time, and I must say, it is beautiful. There is a chance I will be going back to your part of the world in the winter. My stepdaughter would like us to cat sit for two weeks and we might indeed go there and take some brief overnight trips to Prague and Budapest as see what we can of the beautiful countryside!

Kyle, thank you -- I am blushing. And your evening with your son sounds blissful!

Laurie, that is a really good question about the neckline of Z's dress. I'm not sure what you would call it. It was a knit material so it just folded over. She is on a real budget so shops almost entirely at Zara and H&M -- I am sure the dress will have come from one of those places.

Suz, you look terrific!  Your capsule is so perfectly suited for Europe.  I especially love the opera jacket!  I’m so glad your trip went well!
