Tulle skirt and Fab shawl

Olive Green mentioned she'd love a place to wear my tulle skirt. Well, we dined at a friend's tonight and since we don't have lots going on over the holidays, I decided my friend's house was the place! It was very casual -- just Mr. Suz and me and my friend and her partner and their dog and cat. But it was fun to get dressed up for a change.

Tulle skirt: Over on Synne's thread there's an interesting discussion about textures and which ones are wearable to different Kibbe types. I don't know if as some kind of gamine I am technically "supposed" to be able to wear tulle but it feels natural to me as long as I juxtapose it with some less floaty elements. Colour is as relevant as texture, I'd suggest. I would not feel comfortable in a pale pink version of this skirt, no way, no how. And then there is the cut and line of the piece -- the asymmetry of this piece helps me feel "at home" in it.

Thrifted cashmere sweater with portrait and tie up neckline. I've had this now for at least 15 years and who knows how long the previous owner had it. No pilling at all. They don't make it like they used to, folks!

La Canadienne knee high boots. I haven't worn these in a couple of years and no sooner did I put them on then I thought: why the heck not? They are SO comfortable. Nobody makes a last that works better on my foot than La Canadienne. Alas, it takes a king's ransom to buy footwear from this company and I'm not earning as much now as I did when I bought these. So I doubt I will be adding too many new pairs to the closet. :(

Sparkly dark red shawl -- a "secret Santa" gift from a Fabber! It's been in my closet about a decade and is still going strong. My friend keeps her house really cold so I ended up wearing throughout the evening. You can't really see the sparkles in the photos, though I tried. I like them because IRL they are subtle but evident, if that makes sense.

Massimo Dutti Leather jacket -- we were driving, so this was all the outerwear I needed.

BR earrings.

Thanks for looking, and I'd love to hear your thoughts, feelings, and theories about tulle. Who can wear it, and why?

Fabulous look - love everything ( earrings are perfect )!
I wish I've had such an amazing skirt ;) .

  • anchie replied 1 year ago

Fabulous Suz! I really like the skirt and the whole outfit. Skirt is not too dressy but very cool looking so I think you can get lot of wear out of it.
I love my tule skirt and wear it everywhere, don’t care if I can or not:)

  • Synne replied 1 year ago

Great look! I wonder how I'd feel in tulle. Your skirt is beautiful and so cool.

  • Sally replied 1 year ago

That is a great skirt and you wear it well.  I like the fact it has a pattern on it as well the structure of it.  All the layers look great but I especially like that jacket with it.

  • Jessikams replied 1 year ago

What a good outfit for a holiday dinner! Although I guess you wouldn’t want the car on your lap in tulle :)

I like tulle and have had some dresses made of it before. Currently I have some tulle socks in red and black and they are super fun.

  • Cardiff girl replied 1 year ago

You look fabulous!what a great outfit. As far as tulle goes ,l think avoiding the sugar sweet colours and very puffy skirts make them much more wearable for everyday.

  • Vildy replied 1 year ago

You are the very picture and pinnacle of casual sophistication.
Much admiration for your skills in putting this together.

ETA  I like how your sleek perfectly groomed hair offsets the inherent raggedy nature of the skirt's construction.  Me, I'd look like the rabble from Le Miz.

  • Olive Green replied 1 year ago

You look like a sweet and updated Outlander character!
Sigh. I just love your style.

  • Dee replied 1 year ago

That skirt is so versatile, and this is a beautifully crafted look. It so fits with the “gamine” persona, I think its the asymmetry, colour and the plaid that makes it so. Love the sparkly red shawl, and glad you could break out those fab boots.
Tulle seems to be breaking away from it’s ballerina /princess association. You’ve demonstrated just how modern and versatile this fabric can be.

  • cjh replied 1 year ago

Wow! Great look and great for stepping out and wearing for a casual evening! Inspiring!

  • sarah replied 1 year ago

What a great outfit. I especially love how the jacket and boots together toughen up the daintiness of the tulle. And the scarf is a great addition.

  • replied 1 year ago

Killer fab!  Perfect outfit to cheers the holidays.

  • Bijou replied 1 year ago

Suz you look stunning! The casual support act of boots and leather jacket tone down the formality of the skirt. I love tulle and find dressy skirts great to wear in winter as they work well with knits.

  • LJP replied 1 year ago

This is fabulous, Suz!  I like Vildy's point about your sleek hair being the perfect counterpoint to the volume of the skirt and the many details of the pieces you are wearing.  I cannot even conceive of wearing tulle - other than a pair of tulle socks I have which I'm waiting for the right occasion to wear.  Even the mere idea of wearing a tulle skirt adds 15 lbs , lol.  I don't have the body type for this - not enough length  through my torso  and too much fluffiness around my lower abs.   I think these skirts are so interesting and different and LOVE it on you and Janet (same skirt?) .

  • CarolS replied 1 year ago

Well, whether or not you captured the sparkle of the scarf, I'd say YOU certainly sparkle here, Suz!

I like your analysis of why this tulle skirt works for you, and how you make it feel like you.

I don't know much about types, but it has been suggested I fall into some kind of 'natural' category, and I carry a lot of my weight in my midsection, so I have been trying to think of what would make tulle natural to me:

    1. I think it would need to have a dropped yoke to avoid adding extra volume at my waist. Shape similar to my brown velvet skirt
    2. Not sure about colour. I like the idea of it being bronze, but that might just duplicate my velvet skirt, so maybe charcoal or navy?
    3. I'd for sure wear with a stompy or stompy-ish boot -- and if I ever find a dressier boot or evening sandal, well, I'd try that, too.
    4. I'd probably pair it with a very simple, fluid knit top with a crew neck. A bit of jewelry if dressing 'up'. Otherwise, I am usually an accessory minimalist The skirt would be the accessory!
    5. Idea of a moto jacket has always appealed to me, and I think I have finally found one that will work for the odd time I need it. That's a combo I think could work for me.
    6. I would also play with pairing it with my new (thrifted) bomber jacket for a more casual, playful look.
Interesting exercise, Suz! Thanks for helping me think it through. (This also gives me some ideas for getting more use from the velvet skirt I already have.)

These are great on you, and good to know about La Canadienne! If they work for you, they should work for me.

I think I'm too curvy to wear tulle, even at my lowest weight, and maybe too "serious" in look if that makes sense. I don't think I have a drop of Gamine in me!

  • Runcarla replied 1 year ago

Well, I do love the skirt and agree with your assessment.  But. That. Top.  The portrait neckline is so beautiful on you! ❤️

  • Suz replied 1 year ago

Thanks, everyone! It was so much fun to do something social. There's been so little of that in our lives since our move, partly due to Covid and partly due to being in a new city and on an island. Sigh...

Suntiger, re La Canadienne -- yes! And you had one of their boots in your Finds. I hope it does work. I will say that they tend to fit (I think?) on the larger side or perhaps are sized as truly EU sizing. So, I wear a 37 EU or 6.5 or 7 in US sizes, but I always order the 7 in boots in US sizing because otherwise I'd have trouble fitting socks, etc. With La Canadienne I take the 6.5 every time. And I do not need orthotics or extra insoles or anything with their footwear -- it just works for me. Hmm. Thinking maybe I should buy it despite the cost and just baby it like crazy to keep it going....

Carol, that's a great analysis.  The design of this skirt is different from many tulle skirts in that it is not a lot of tiny gathered pleats -- it's a few well-placed boxy pleats -- and there are only two layers of tulle, so it's not "bunchy."

Lisa, thank you and yes, this is the skirt Janet also has. I'm glad I got it -- I think maybe I have you to thank for the original link, or maybe it was Janet? Not sure. I know both of you were looking at it.

Bijou, it's so true -- a dressy skirt is easy to dress down enough for a variety of occasions. Or to dress up! I've worn this one more formally, too, with a jacquard top and pumps.

    Xtbay, Sarah, cjh, thank you!

Dee, you are right, I think -- it's a question of the balancing of all elements. When Janet and I saw this skirt we each thought it could fit with our style and it does, even though I don't think either of us would wear tulle in another colour.

Olive Green -- thank you! That is high praise. Maybe I can get a bit part if there's another series? :)

Vildy, thank you. That's interesting about the hair. It's in a bit of a mess at the moment (need a haircut) so I had to get out the smoothing iron for the bangs -- maybe that helped the look!

Cardiff Girl -- yes -- avoiding the sweet sugar colours is the way to go (for me, at least!)

Jessikams, I laughed so hard at that cat comment. My friend's cat is a demon, so I definitely wouldn't want her in my lap! Luckily, she's also human-avoidant.

Sally, I like it best with the jacket, too -- balances the boots. Plus, I had not worn the jacket in a while and had another of those -- why the heck am I not wearing this more often? moments.

Synne -- maybe tulle would work for you -- it is stiffer and you would wear it on the bottom. But not in a fairy-light colour, I think?

Anchie, thank you -- and I'll bet that skirt looks fab on you! Great colour.

Slim cat -- the skirt was very inexpensive and a good purchase for the price. It's got closet longevity.

  • Ms. Liz replied 1 year ago

What a fabulous outfit!  The pieces work perfectly together and I just love that tulle skirt.  I am learning so much from you ladies on how to use the pieces I own to pull together an outfit that is comfortable and reflects my personality.

  • Column replied 1 year ago

My goodness, you look stunning! These are the outfits I live for: in my closet, with juxtaposed tensions. And oh, that hair! We do get better with age! <3

  • UmmLila (Lisa) replied 1 year ago

    This is absolutely perfect !

  • Janet replied 1 year ago

    Fab, Suz!

I almost brought my skirt with me on this trip we’re on, but we’ll be doing a lot of city walking in the cold, and I was not feeling skirts for this! But the version with the jacket is pretty much exactly how I like to style that skirt.

  • Angie replied 1 year ago

Suz, that skirt is one of the best items in your wardrobe! Have you tried it with our gilet?

KILLER to the Power of KILLER - all three iterations! Very elegant.

SOOOOO fun to dress up and socialize with friends! That IS an occasion. Oh, how we have missed it.....

The big earrings are smashing! Sooooo pretty.

The boots could not be more perfect for the skirt! A little higher than a riding boot, but not too high. JUST. SO. PERFECT! And very 2023. Glad you hauled out your La Canadiennes :)

Fab you had a super time!

  • Suz replied 1 year ago

Angie, thanks. It was really fun to get dressed up! And, yes, the boots have a stable heel, 2 inches or so, just enough, and the design of their footwear is so extraordinary that you really don't feel the heel at all.

I've tried the skirt on with the gilet and like it. Needs the right support act, of course, and that is a bit trickier. Balancing the weight of the fskirt/ gilet, and whatever top worn under with the right footwear. I will experiment more with this, though, because it would be a fun combination.

Janet, the skirt would not be warm enough for walking around a lot outdoors in winter. I'd have left it behind, too!

UmmLila, Column, Ms. Liz -- thank you! And Carla, thanks, too. It's hard to find this neckline but i love it whenever I do find it. Maybe it's a ballet neckline, not a portrait, strictly speaking. Not sure. But it's such a great style.

  • Vildy replied 1 year ago

I just returned from an extended friends and family Christmas luncheon where folks wore everything from clean casual (polos, tees, sweatshirts, sport shirts) to mens suits and women also in all stages of dress up and down and I thought of you and your black top because the young and hip grown women (30s, 40s) were wearing a version of your black top.

  • Suz replied 1 year ago

Interesting, Vildy! Maybe it's a case of everything coming back around...heaven only knows how old this thrifted sweater might be. The brand is Luxe...I should look it up!

  • Laurie replied 1 year ago

I can tell you had fun putting this amazing ensemble together! Fab!

I do love a portrait collar...

  • Sal replied 1 year ago

Stunning outfit Suz.  Festive but individual.

As to who can wear tulle, I think anyone who wants to should wear it!  I suspect it does suit some people's style more than others.  I have often admired it but not found the right piece - but I don't know if it is "natural/breezy/relaxed" enough for my style, although it is bold and can be elegant.

  • Suz replied 1 year ago

Sal, that makes perfect sense -- it's crisp and stands apart from the body but in a way that feels a bit sharp or something...I can see how it might compete with your descriptors.

    Thanks, Laurie

  • Jaime replied 1 year ago

Just love that skirt on you every time I see you wear it! Styling is everything and I think you are on the money with the fact that gamine you needs juxtaposition, whereas a romantic might just need glam? Not sure but am sure you look fabulous!

  • Suz replied 1 year ago

Jaime, thank you! And Happy Hannukah!

  • Irina replied 1 year ago

You look so lovely! This skirt was made for you, Suz!

  • rachylou replied 1 year ago

    On fire Suz!

I feel it helps to be rather dramatic when it comes to the wearing of tulle…

  • lyn67 replied 1 year ago

Just my way of fantasy Xmass outfit-and soooo so fab!!! (My never worn tulle:-) is an dark olive with velvety burned out/or on(?) small florals..perhaps could come out to the light during these holidays...but I always chicken out when IRL :-().

  • Zaeobi replied 1 year ago

YLF, @Suz - between the shiny jewellery, makeup, textures & colours, you're positively glowing!

But I have to agree with @Carla, that the portrait/ ballet (not jewel, right?) neckline is the star of the show for me! I commiserate with how difficult it is to find this style these days though - I found a similar black top with faux feathers framing the neckline, but it was off the shoulders (a pain for bras!)

  • Suz replied 1 year ago

Zaeobi, this one is a bit of a pain with a bra, too...it's not really off the shoulder, but because of the tie in front it tends to pull in weird ways and my bra straps do tend to show. Sometimes I can get it organized "just so" but others times...not so much. Since it's a thrifted top that I wear about once a year, that's ok -- it's really special occasion wear. But I would love a top with a neckline like this that I could wear more comfortably for every day.

Lyn, that skirt sounds amazing for you! Wear it for a dress up night at home -- that will give you courage.

    Rachy, Irina -- thank you!

  • LJP replied 1 year ago

This thread has had me thinking . The comments regarding who and what “type” can wear tulle opened my closed little mind to why some things just feel wrong . Things that I usually blame on my body type / weight and never dive deeper than that . I blame my weight issues for everything I think I can’t wear , when in fact it’s more of a style personality mismatch . Tulle is too dainty or too pretty for me , or in the case of an edgy plaid tulle like this skirt - too statement making . It suits you because of the gamine juxtaposition mentioned by someone above . Thanks for letting me work through this , lol.

    new style moniker for Suz

    Graceful Gamine

  • Suz replied 1 year ago

    Aww, thanks, Angie. :)

LisaP, yes!! This is why so many people go down that Kibbe rabbit hole, LOL. Because (if interpreted the way I think he intended, though the man is so obscure he might as well write in another language...) he really isn't saying one body or beauty type should be preferred or here's how to dress to disguise your flaws...he's saying, look -- there are a bunch of different style essences, if you will. He emphasizes line over other style elements, but it's a useful corrective to some other systems -- and the idea is to harmonize your clothing with your "line." (Admittedly, it's a bit hard to tell what he means by that, but...)

I think I'll start a new thread about this...

  • Bonnie replied 1 year ago

This outfit looks fantastic on you in every photo. Thanks for your explanation of Kibbe, and I think I have Gamine tendencies, too.

  • Kate replied 1 year ago

What a gorgeous neckline on you, Suz, and that scarf is beautiful. The whole outfit is picture perfect.

  • Christina F. replied 1 year ago

I love this skirt on you so much!

  • Zaeobi replied 1 year ago

Ah I know the neckline issue of which you speak very well - especially when teaching, where an otherwise fine neckline makes you afraid to bend over lol! Have you considered a double magnet or brooch pin to hold it in place?

  • Suz replied 1 year ago

Zaeobi, that is brilliant! Thanks for the idea!

And thanks all for the kind words.
