Unsuited? More "Theorizing"

Are you tired of my suit saga yet? Well, if so, sign off now. Because there is more to come.

Let's see if I can summarize.

1. I returned the Banana Republic suit. While I loved the fabric and the quality to price ratio was high, it just read too "classic" to me and not quite right.

2. In my possession still are the Lanai jacket and Testra pants. But I have not cut the tags.

In the photos below, I have tried to show it in natural light. It actually looks more purple here than it does IRL (the day was very overcast but with glare). More on the photos and my concerns below.

Meanwhile, on the weekend I tried on more Theory jackets and pants.

I tried the Lanai and the Gabe 2 in the urban stretch fabric. Both were a good fit. There was no buckling whatsoever in this fabric on the Lanai.

In fact, Sveta, whose judgement is impeccable, and who's a stickler for fit. actually preferred the Lanai to the Gabe on me.

Having said that, I was wearing a flared skirt at the time, and the Lanai would definitely work better with a skirt than the Gabe would. So I actually think either jacket would be good for me in the urban stretch.

But, as you know, I don't just want a jacket. I want a suit. And there's the rub.

I tried 3 different styles of pant in the urban stretch. And all I can say is YUCK!! In an unlined pant, this fabric felt like cheap 70s polyester. It showed every lump and bump. In fact, it showed lumps and bumps that aren't even there! (I walked out of that change room with some serious body image issues, I tell you.)

And sizing up didn't work all that well. The fit just looked bizarrely "off" in some way that I couldn't identify precisely. After all, I already own an older version of the Emery trousers in a grey stretch flannel and they work great! But it seems I'm not alone. If you read the Nordie's reviews you will see I am not the only person to complain about this.

So...what to do?

At the moment, I'm holding onto a suit which was effectively free to me. With the reduced price plus Nordstrom notes, this Lanai plus pants cost me nothing.

So what is the problem?

My concerns have to do with the fit. The pants are just plain weird, to be honest. In the stock photos they showed them skin tight and cropped or looser and cropped. I sized up because my regular size was too snug across the hip bone for comfort. Meanwhile, this size is hugely baggy in the legs and perhaps not right in the rise -- I'm not entirely sure.

Denise suggested the pants were too long and not streamlined enough. So in some of these photos I tried to shorten one pant leg a bit to see if that helps.

Then there is the fit issue with the jacket across the bust area. The wrinkling is not extreme, and it's less noticeable with some tops than others. Maybe it would cease to be a problem after a while. It's hard to say.

Right now I am wondering what to do. Should I:

  • Keep the suit I have, possibly getting the pants altered in some way, and ignoring that slight jacket fit difficulty.
  • Keep the jacket as a stand alone jacket and return the pants.
  • Reorder the BR pants to wear with the Lanai jacket. They don't match and it's much more evident IRL than in this photo, but they could be worn together in a pinch.
  • Send back the Lanai and the pants and wait?
  • Look for a Gabe 2 or a Lanai in the urban stretch as stand alines. (Of course this would be twice the price of the current jacket).

Your thoughts would be most appreciated!

1. Suit -- one pant leg shortened...not that you can really tell, I realize.
2, 3, 4 --  Side and back views.
5. Another view.
6. Just the pants.
7. Lanai with the BR pants (now returned but still available in my size.)

What a dilemma. If you can use it, I feel that you should keep the beautiful jacket for sure. I think the shortened side of the pants does look better in the way it hangs, but the BR pants look so much better.
If you really want a suit, you may need to wait, otherwise you are settling for something that doesn't feel fab to you. If the jacket and BR pants will work for a holder "suit" and can also fit into your wardrobe as separates, maybe that is the way to go. Only you know what will best suit (pun intended) your needs.

  • carol3012 replied 10 years ago

Not to speak like I have experience, but I have this thing against dress pants or anything non-casual pants that wrinkle like it's nothing to do, even when it's NOT clinging to anything (I can't tell where all that distress is coming from!) so the BR pants actually look *cleaner* to my eye.

But I also look at fabric for my trousers, they have to have quality, the right kind of weight and flow to it for better movement.  And if you returned them, then they did not sit well with you at some point, meaning if you went back to go get them, you will regret it somewhere for some reason down the road and still not wear them..and probably will buy another pair.

Hate to say it, but I'd keep looking if I were in your shoes.  I rather have a perfect pair if I already have one in the closet that I can already wear.

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

We will get there, Suz. Before, I answer in earnest, do you have a photo of yourself in the Gabe B2? (Which I bought a few days ago). I would love to compare it to the Lanai. I have a feeling I might prefer the Gabe B2.

I'm glad the BR suit went back.

  • Susie replied 10 years ago

I don't think that you have yet found your suit and I think that is worth waiting for. Would you want this same style jacket as your suit jacket? If so, then I'm not sure you should also have it as a stand alone jacket. If there is room for the lanai in addition to a suit, then I think you should get it in the fabric that gives you the perfect fit.

  • Ariadne replied 10 years ago

Oh, this is a tough one. I see what you mean about the weird Theory pants fit.  The BR ones are so much better.

It sounds to me like the slight fit issue in the Lanai you show here still bothers you.  Is that likely to change, based on your experience?  I know for me it would just bother me more and more over time.  The mismatched BR pants and Theory jacket would also bother me.  That said, I can't see either problem in these photos.  But I don't have the best eye for those things.

It sounds like the Lanai in the Urban Stretch fabrication was fantastic on you. That makes me lean towards buying it as a stand-alone jacket. I would be shocked if you didn't wear it to death.  Then you can continue to keep looking for your perfect suit, at your leisure, while enjoying the heck out of your dream jacket with all the other killer bottoms you already own.

  • replied 10 years ago

Umm, honestly speaking, theory pants fit like death to many. Their jackets are the best, the pants not so much. They have no weight, they are never going to drape in a flattering way. My best suit comes from Express, believe it or not. I am afraid I have no advice other than to commiserate.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Angie, I am sorry. No pics of me in the Gabe 2! But that can be arranged. I can go on a little shopping jaunt again in a few weeks and ask someone to snap a few. I should have asked Sveta to take some at the time.

I honestly like both jackets in the urban stretch and don't see one as a substitute for the other, so that's not an issue. I mean to say, in the long run, I can see myself wanting both. For example, I wondered if an Lanai in urban stretch in the black might be a smart buy. I don't currently own a black jacket and this seems like a versatile piece. And, as I said, you don't see any buckling on me in the urban stretch.

  • nancylee replied 10 years ago

Suz, it is NOT your lovely body that's the problem.  In my limited experience, Theory suit pants are cut very weird.  I've tried on several pair and have had the same reaction as you: what is wrong with these pants?  Lumps and bumps.  Unlined!  Funny seams.  Baggy in some areas, then tight in others.  Argh!

About a year ago, like you, I went on a quest for a Theory suit and came away empty handed.  The jackets fit beautifully once you find your correct size, but I could not find pants to match that pleased me.  :(

I hope this doesn't discourage you, but I feel your pain.  And FWIW, I wouldn't try to cobble together a mismatched suit with the BR pants and Lanai jacket.  You are itching for a real matched suit, and I fear you'd ultimately be dissatisfied with this pairing.

  • Sveta replied 10 years ago

You know what I think: don't let a "good deal" to influence your judgement.
I am not loving this suit on you - both blazer and pants. I have seen another Lanai on you IRL and it fits better. Why settle for less perfect item? I am also not happy with pants fit -they are too baggy in not a good way, especially from the side.
Just look at these pictures, pretend it is my post and you have no idea it costs virtually nothing - what your advice would be? :-)
You should stalk that navy Gabe blazer Angie got. I would but it is too short for me :-(

Are these pants the same as these from Angie's store? If not  - have you tried those?

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

You are all very wise. I am leaning towards returning the lot at this moment. There is no huge rush, after all.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

No - those are different pants, Sveta. I can't try them because they are not available any more!  Alas! Plus they are not the same fabric/ colour as the new Gabe 2 jacket.

Sveta, if I may ask you, why did you prefer the Lanai to the Gabe 2? That jacket I tried on was the one Angie just bought, except I had to try it in black not navy, since they did not have navy in my size.

  • Sveta replied 10 years ago

And hey, you will have your free notes to play again with! :-)

  • Caro in Oz replied 10 years ago

My gut reaction is a no; as you say you are looking for a suit.  Unless the jacket & pants can be tailored then I don't think they fit well enough. Suz, I feel your pain I've been looking for mine for two years :)

  • Deborah replied 10 years ago

Suz, as much as I adore the Lanai jacket on you, the pants are letting the team down.  I think this is one of the moments to perhaps exercise PPP (did I get that right?) as your desire is really for a suit.

  • Karie replied 10 years ago

I would not settle for less than a perfect fit. It's out there somewhere, I promise! I do like the Lanai jacket on you but the pants not so much. If you can keep the jacket to wear with your fab other skirts and slacks, I would do that.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

I'm not loving the Theory trousers at all Suz. The fit is definitely off and don't do your beautiful shape justice at all.

I'm also not crazy about the option of mismatched trousers with the Lanai as a "faux" suit. I know you are looking for a true suit.

I happen to love the Lanai on you but I don't think YOU love it on you. The front wrinkle issue bothers you and will you always think about that when you wear it?

Like Angie, I would love to see the Gabe 2 in you for comparison.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Okay, my friends -- and thank you! This suit is going back, the notes will be refactored into my account somehow or other, and I'm still on the hunt.

Next consideration: Should I buy the Lanai or the Gabe as a stand-alone jacket in the urban stretch? I can see doing that. But perhaps when one or both goes on sale.

  • Gaylene replied 10 years ago

OK, I'm going to slightly rephrase your questions. I hear you asking
    1. Should I keep this suit with fit issues because I didn't spend much money on it?
    2. Should I keep just the jacket because it sort-of fits and is cheap even though I really want a suit?
    3. Should I order a pair of pants that sort-of go with the jacket that sort-of fits and pretend it is a suit?
    4. Should I keep on looking for a suit that fits and looks great?
    5. Should I just buy a jacket even though I really want a suit?

Do I need to point out which option I'd be voting for here?

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

I also want to see pictures of the other Lanai and the Gabe. Anyway, it terms of this Lanai, I think it needs to be divorced from the suit idea and seen as a stand alone piece. The Theory trousers just don't do it. Whether its price would be better put toward the other Lanai or the Gabe is the question!

  • Sveta replied 10 years ago

Suz, I liked them both on you, the fit was good. It is possible that your skirt influenced my slight preference for Lanai :-) but I also felt it had less traditional vibe than Gabe...but I think you cannot go wrong with any of them!

As for the pants - they show available in size 2 ..

  • replied 10 years ago

Well, in the time it took me to formulate a reply, you've made a decision! And I think it's a good one. I'm so sorry that the Theory pants are cut so strangely. I used to think that if I had a larger budget, I could find whatever I was searching for, but your experience proves that is not the case. It must be so frustrating! I hope your suit doesn't turn out to be a HEWI.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Sveta, thank you! Re the pants -- that is interesting. They must have come back in, or I was smoking something when I looked them up last time...probably the 2 won't fit me anyway since with Theory I might have to size up....but perhaps worth looking at....

You are all super helpful! This suit's going back and onto the next thing!

Claire, this is year 2 for the search and so far it is HEW, but that is okay. It will make the finding it all the more sweet!

  • Sveta replied 10 years ago

Suz, it was 3 YEARS for my long coat search! :-) Never despair...

  • Amy replied 10 years ago

Suz, you are not happy with this suit. I wonder if it's like shopping for a wedding dress. You'll just know when you have found the right one. You and the lanai/trousers will be better off as just friends.

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

Return the lot, and get the Gabe B2. Then we can be twins. xoxoxoxo (Lots of kisses for you today, Darling Suz).

I usually have tremendous luck with Theory trousers, Zap. My favourite trousers are all Theory actually - well, and Elizabeth & James.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Done. And the suit can wait until next year. :)

Maybe I should have bought the amazing Dolce and Gabbana tux jacket I saw at the Winner's in Toronto. Still $400 so I left it on the rack but wow, it was a lovely black jacket!

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

There you go, Suz. All sorted. No more cognitive dissonance. Plenty of time to purchase a perfect suit.

I don't support D&G *at all* so I'm glad you didn't get that jacket.

  • Ariadne replied 10 years ago

Yay, sorted.  I do think you should get the Lanai in the Urban Stretch as a stand-alone, though. I  love the cut on you.

  • Jules replied 10 years ago

Angie I think that is the first time I've heard you speak out so strongly against a brand. Is there a particular problem with D&G? I don't wear it and won't take offense :)

  • Gaylene replied 10 years ago

Jules, Angie might be referring to the really offensive, sexualized advertising that D&G have used which depict women in a submissive position. One such ad was interpreted by many observers as depicting a gang rape and was banned in several countries. For what it's worth, I agree with her in boycotting companies who use violent or demeaning images to sell their products, especially when done in a stylized way that makes the images appear attractive on the surface.

  • catgirl replied 10 years ago

I see decisions have been made!  I just want to say that some Theory fits me well, other stuff looks beyond horrid.  The Max C. pants were PERFECT on me and I hope the changed version is somehow better and not worse.

My point is, it's not you!  You will find your perfect suit and you have the time to wait, so why rush?

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

Jules, I'm not referring to Gaylene's example, although I'm sickened reading the description. My Sis in Law who lives in London went to Monaco to interview Mr. Dolce for an upmarket Boating magazine, and he relayed thoughts and opinions during the interview that went against my principles extremely strongly. Since then, I cannot support the brand at all.

  • Nicole D replied 10 years ago

Interesting to read the process you have gone through SUz.  I am still in shock that you do not own a black blazer!  I have to scold myself into not buying another one!  DO you have other black toppers?

  • unfrumped replied 10 years ago

This is more of a generic opinion, but I don't have any problem at all buying stand-alone jackets or pants that are (could be) part of a suit, because it's so hard to find a matched suit that I'd never get anywhere if I tried to follow the advice of "buy 2 suits in gray and black or navy and  mix and match the pieces". So I think you can evaluate each piece as to whether it works well for what it is--if one of the jackets works great with many of your bottoms and it will be a great go-to jacket, (and is in your price range) then I'd just judge it that way--as a stand-alone jacket, does it feel like a fab 10 and plays well with my wardrobe? If not, then you're not just waiting for the right "suit", you're also deciding that a more fab jacket, suit or not suit or one of each, is likely out there. Also I wear pants a lot without using the jacket as a key part of the outfit, so I recently bought 2 pairs that had matching jackets available, but the jackets did  not work. But they have to work with a lot of tops and with at least one unmatched jacket  plus outerwear.

  • replied 10 years ago

Yes, that is true Angie. I remembered. I think yours are older, before they changed their fabrics to the stuff that looks like the material from the GAP trousers though. Am I right?

  • tarzy replied 10 years ago

I like the way Gaylene has rephrased the questions. Dear Suz, you have such a fabulous wardrobe - why settle? (Especially since this is not something you need tomorrow.)

I spent about four years looking for a leather jacket I really loved. It had to fit right, be simple, be good leather, and not be black. This year I found it. It was more than I had thought I would pay, but now I have a great leather jacket I truly love and the search is over. I am really starting to understand PPP. At my age I've decided I'm too old to wear clothes that aren't really what I want. (If not now... when? When I'm 65? 75? 85?)

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Tara, Una, you are so right. No need to settle on this. I am going to wait. And maybe get a stand-alone jacket.

I was completely unaware of the controversies that Gaylene describes or Angie's SIL's experience but I am very glad that I did not buy that Dolce and Gabbana jacket! And I will never buy anything from them in the future, either. (Not that it was much of a risk, given my budget, but you know...)

Nicole, I don't won a single black topper at the moment. Not one. I own very few F/W jackets period:

    1 white leather jacket
    1 taupe leather jacket
    1 blue jacquard blazer
1 navy military detailed jacket that is a bit dated and short but still wearable

I also have my fuchsia silk for special occasion, and a denim jacket that really only gets worn in summer.

Anyway...you see why I need toppers!

  • Parsley replied 10 years ago

I think you've made a wise decision, Suz. Even though I really liked the jacket on you, if you're looking for a full suit you should hold out for a full suit.
But maybe you do need a black topper, too?

  • HelenInCanada replied 10 years ago

Ah, I'm a tad confused, being away for awhile!  Hello!  From what I was able to sort, Suz, I think you should keep the jacket!  The pants in the pics are not the best fit - too baggy or something...just a tad off.  Do-able, but not perfect. Apologies if I've overlooked something!

I'm appalled to hear about D&G!  Eeks - thank goodness I've never seen the 'gang rape' ad.  Would have gotten my blood boiling.  Ugh.  Sory to hijack! :/

  • Alassë replied 10 years ago

Sounds like you made the right PPP decision, Suz. Good for you.

  • Day Vies replied 10 years ago

Love the fit of the jacket -- I feel like the pants are just a touch too roomy for my eye. However it works as composition because the fit of the jacket which is spot on is juxtaposed with the slouch of the pant. Ideally I'd want to see the perfect fit of the jacket align with perfect fit in the pant because the jacket is so crisp.

  • Lisa replied 10 years ago

I've been in this position, really wanting a core item and just not being able to find it! It is so frustrating. Whenever I've settled, it's always been wasted money. Don't settle on something as expensive as a suit. The right one will come along. It took me 3 years to find a simple pair of black skinny jeans and now that I finally have, they were worth every penny. While I was waiting for them I sported skinny jeans in other colors and black trousers when I wanted black bottoms. Perhaps you can match up a cardigan and trousers as your "suit" until you find the right one? Or go tonal with a navy blazer and dark wash jeans?
