Wear it a new way (and skin sandwich)

The dark dark days are upon us on the PNW and I am craving colour! Alas...examining my closet, I find I simply do not have enough of it. Some of this is understandable; earth tones have been everywhere the past five years. It's been more difficult to source items in my more flattering colours. Also, I've needed to update essentials. So most of my winter purchases during this period have been in my key neutrals of navy and grey.

Meanwhile, I've retired quite a few more colourful items. To survive the dark days of winter, I'm going to have to remedy this -- will be looking to add more colour ASAP. In the meantime, I'm working with what I still have.

These J. Crew wool culottes have been in the closet since 2016. An Angie recommended item. Gorgeous wool, beautiful drape, interesting style with dropped pleats. Another item that has stood the test of time -- they look and feel as current today as they did when I bought them, unless I'm fooling myself, LOL. They're a grey glen plaid with a bright royal/ cobalt stripe. With them, I bought this thick merino back zip pullover, and often I've tended to pair the two in outfits since the sweater picks up the blue stripe in the pants.

Today I wondered if I could wear the pullover as a "cardigan." I flipped it backwards and unzipped it. You can't unzip it all the way (the sweater collar prevents that) but that's ok, as I actually want the colour near my face.

I'm enjoying this!

With the boots, alas, I have a wee skin sandwich thing going on. I guess I need some cobalt socks or something...not sure what I've got that will close the gap.

KILLER cute, Suz! Cobalt is sublime on you. Now that we can appreciate it more in that brilliant new light ;)

The party at the back in welcome in front! Clever.

You were ahead of the curve with those pants! On trend and as fab six years later....

The new navy loafers and white boots have become workhorses, and fit seamlessly into your style. At this stage I can't remember your style without them!

Onward Team COLOUR. The grey PNW can be hectic, but it's also beautifully atmospheric. I have learned to love it.....as long as I wear my brights!

What a fun look! I don't think this counts as a skin sandwich--I think that would be if you had a bootie that cut off in a straight line like an inch below your hemline. Which, I reiterate, is not a look I hate.

very nice! it's playful and elegant at the same time - well done!

    J. Crew really does do some amazing things now and again, and their pants are consistently great, I think. I wish I'd bought those purple ones Roxanna got a few years back -- the balloon style. With the jacket. I've looked on ebay and poshmark etc. to no avail.

Angie, I can't imagine life without my indoor loafers either!! They've made my WFH life a lot happier. If they go on sale again, I might get the ivory version. I also love the white boots. I'm finding them very easy to incorporate into outfits.

And you are so right -- the weather here is beautiful in so many ways, and I love the green everywhere, so I'm not really complaining. I just need to dress for it in colours that add joy.

Wow, great look! The backwards sweater is so creative but it doesn't look backwards, it looks intentional. Love!

I deeply relate to your wish for more color in the dark days. "Not enough color, too many dark neutrals" is exactly the problem with my winter wardrobe that I've been trying to solve for some years now. (I know you've heard me lament this before.)

For the sock issue -- agree with others that this is not an aesthetic problem but you probably need a little more warmth. It seems to me that the skin is only visible a little bit, and only when you move. So maybe an opportunity for something cheeky -- cobalt socks? Argyle?

I love the backward “cardigan” Suz! You’re making your clothing bend to your whims, and I admire that! That colour is beautiful on you.

Cobalt socks would be fun, but I wouldn’t rule out something close to the base colour of the pant or even white to visually extend the boot effect.

I am dressed in very muted colours today and feel it - a bit blah and flat I’m already looking forward to tomorrow when I plan to debut some new (colourful) pieces that I think will bring a very different vibe.

Cute and creative - hooray to adding colour, but also your whites add such a lovely pop and light and bright to your outfits.

    Cute way to wear it!

I like the loafers version best. More skin looks more intentional.

I love that color and am on the fence about this sweater. I just got a notification that it’s back in stock, but it’s not organic cotton. This is a favorite color for me, but widely available where I’m moving, so I don’t exactly need to stock up. https://en.zalando.de/gerry-we.....c1062432ae

Yes...the loafers is inside only today. It's cold and wet out there!

    That's a lovely turtleneck, SF.

A dull day here too, but you look terrific in cobalt blue, that’s a really clever change up.

Fabulous, with the boots and the loafers! I love the sweater that way, and that color looks splendid on you. I have a sugar eye for those pants and agree with you 100% about J. Crew--I have lots of their pants and they are all going strong, after many years.

Agree with Angie - where have these loafers & boots been all your life?? It's a good thing the boots are waterproof too - here's hoping they last you for a while yet!

I like Sarah's suggestion to add a cobalt sock - would be a nice way to try another pop of colour with low pressure.

Very creative ! Love that shade of blue on you :). I actually prefer this look with the boots and I don’t think this qualifies as a full on skin sandwich . A coloured sock might be distracting . Looks fine to me as is !

The cobalt is brilliant on you and excellent way to boss your clothes around! I don't see the bit of skin as the "dreaded" sandwich problem and would just want another layer for warmth. Culottes are as good as new fashion wise imho!

You look great in the cobalt. One of my fave colours too. I love the “cardigan” effect. Our Spring was so cold I was just so tired of my black and white and olive winter wardrobe but I stuck it out. I do have small amounts of red I could throw in occasionally.
Even today it is raining again and I am wearing long black pants with my new shirred top and at least cobalt jacket/ yellow loafers for a bit of bright!

Brilliant idea with turning that great cobalt sweater into a cardi-and looks great! I must say I much preffer the outfit with the white boots--using them to bookend hair and striped top is genius -I  don't care if it makes a "skin sandwich"  or not- thus, I wear  my winter wide legs with loafers, too- I always love pairing  them with boots the best, I feel they  ground all the look much better than a loafer.

Love this! Wish I could remember to try things backwards! :)

I am wowed at how well you wear cobalt, this is stunning.

Cute! Cute! Cute! I'll echo everyone on how fab the cobalt is on you.
