What are your surprising workhorses this season, and why?

I'm perpetually puzzled by how difficult it can be to predict my wardrobe workhorses.

It never fails. The item I think of as a throw off, a cheap thrill, or perhaps as an indulgence, turns into the item that I wear to death!

Last fall it was my $20 fast fashion fuchsia jacket. Who could have known that a bright knit jacket would become so darn useful?

Well...this season -- an unusually long and cold spring -- my workhorses are as follows:

1. (Pic 1) Theory trench. Previously loved by another YLF member, now adored by me.

2. (Pics 2 - 4) True Religion Camerons. I can wear them down, I can wear them cuffed, and I adore them. Big expense, totally worth it in my jeans-wearing life. (Waving to jeans twins, Angie, Denise, Rae).

3. Button downs. (Pics 2-3) Angie and Inge recommended J. Crew tux shirt (waving to shirt twins Inge and Tanya) and striped linen shirt. The first was also something of an indulgence but I am rapidly reducing the CPW. As for the second, it has become my best friend.

4. White Hi-ness Cons. (Pic 5) (Waving to shoes twins Angie, Mona, Ceit). Wow, these have been great in our uncertain weather. They do require a good wash now, but I love that they breathe, grip the pavement, can take the wet, provide a bit of a lift, and give some ankle support. I wear them with jeans and skirts!

5. Floral jacket. (Pic 4)  Only a few weeks old, and already worn 7 times. Good purchase!

6. White jeans. (Pic 5) When it's cool but you want spring, what could be better than washable, easy denim in white? Our usual springs would make these impossible to wear, but this year, they've felt necessary!

7. Gap mesh sleeved sweaters. (Pics 4 & 5) (Waving to all my many twins on these!)  These are not great quality and the do annoy me by stretching out, but at the same time, they are easy to wear and give a nice unstructured element of slouch. In an ordinary spring, these would have been far too warm to wear often.

8. Equipment silk shirt (Pic 6). Rae pick!! LOVE this silky shirt; it's fun, easy to wear, a bit dressy, a bit casual. And makes me think of Max. (Waving to shirt twins Rae and Mary K!)

It seems the main reason I'm surprised by these workhorses is that our typical spring weather would not have called for items like this as often. I'd already be sporting sleeveless and shorts and wouldn't need a raincoat on many days.

It does make it a bit tricky to plan; last year, our temperatures were sizzling!

The one constant I think I can point to is that Angie or YLF recommended items tend to get a lot of wear in my rotation!!

How about you? Have you had surprising workhorses? And if so, why?

My grey Keds. Super comfy and easy for moms. My grey And blue striped Club Monaco top. Also super comfy and looks pulled together. A grey pair of skinny jeans from joe fresh. Bought them on a whim and wear them all the time. Actually these 3 items get worn as an outfit at least once a week!

I'll try to post some pics later.

  • Thistle replied 10 years ago

My gold Born sandals.  I would have never thought gold shoes could be:
    1. So comfortable
    2. So neutral
    3. So close to a nude for me

I could literally wear these with so many outfits I have to control myself and dole out their wearing

And I never, ever would have ordered gold shoes has Angie not recommended them  :)

  • Isabel replied 10 years ago

Suz, I sooo agree with you.  It is just so hard to predict. I have to say that is why I just love Nordstrom. It is such a "safe" buy because I just don't know anymore what I will wear regularly until I wear it regularly.  LOL .  Does that make sense ?  Last year, I even took to buying some very inexpensive things and KMart just to check out the silhouette before I got something more substantial.

Like you have experienced, this has been a chillier spring than usual.  A Loft pair of ankle jeans and my Kut from the Kloth boyfriend jeans have been the most useful.  I have also gotten a lot of use out of a cord trench that I bought from LL Bean.  I swear it is sooooo cute !  It is in a deep purple. I bought it for fall, but it has been so chilly that it became my "heavier" spring coat.

  • Aziraphale replied 10 years ago

Love your Theory trench.  I see why it gets lots of wear.  I also particularly like your outfits in pictures 1, 2 and 5.  :-)

My surprise workhorse (so far) the spring/summer season (which has only really got going in the last month, as our springs tend to be drizzly and wet!) is an army green cargo skirt that had been languishing in my closet for seven years because it was ankle length.  I didn't want to hem it because it had a cool drawstring detail at the bottom, but honestly, ankle length casual skirts just don't work for me.  I had maybe worn it three times.  Anyway I pulled it out a month ago and decided that I had two choices: either chop off the bottom or donate!  Well, surprise surprise, I have worn it to death.  It is now just below knee-length, narrow a-line with back slit, and cool-looking cargo pockets on the sides.  It goes with everything.  I love love love it.

  • Vicki replied 10 years ago

You are such an incredibly inspiring woman, Suz, because you purchase so wisely and know your style inside and out!  (I really wanted that tuxedo shirt to work out, but it was too long on me).

Let's see, I would say that my Burberry Brit trench coat and Burberry scarf are two that keep on giving this season.

Thanks to you and your postings, I can proudly say that I LOVE my reversible Michael Kors belt (Twins Suz and Jenava) and wear this item over and over again.  What a perfect accessory for traveling, too.

You came through again with the GAP mesh-sleeved toppers, which do lack in quality, but work ever so well.

My adorable yellow tartan jeans (thanks to Twin Angie) always make me happy and seem to get approving nods.

  • always trying replied 10 years ago

My denim jackets (I have 2) wear them more this year than ever and I have had them for a long time.   next would be my white jeans, and my sketchers light weight running shoes..the best running shoes I have ever had.

  • Makrame replied 10 years ago

Oh, I was just thinking about this today!  I have several items that have been worn more often than I expected, mostly because of the cold weather as well.

GAP real straight jeans - I wear
them so much, I am wondering if I should get a second pair and hem them
    for flats.

Vince cotton sweater in cobalt - it's nice to wear something
    long-sleeved yet lightweight.

Jackets of all kinds, including last year's Loft
    striped jacket
and this year's GAP academy blazer in chambray.

Silver flats by Corso Como (work well for the wet weather)

I have a few items that I bought this spring but almost never wear - the ratio of hits/misses is not bad but still, I would like to be 100% right in my shopping decisions. :)

  • Diana replied 10 years ago

My blue patent oxfords, which I bought on a whim from yoox because they were on sale and I liked the color. But they are perfect for our so-far very wet spring. Waterproof but not too warm, and not so wintry as boots.

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

*WAVING and high fiving Suz, Inge and Vicki"!

Suz, you have your style nailed :). SO gorgeous! Love hearing about your WWHs. And yes - they can be hard to predict.

Thistle, welcome to Team Gold Shoes! Your wear those sandals to perfection.

    My WWHs this sesaon are:

    • ALL my white jeans - of which I have 4 pairs (am wearing a pair now)
    • BF jeans: TR Camerons and the white KUTS
    • Black Lace bomber
    • White belt
    • Gold belt
    • White pointy toe pumps
    • Gold pointy toe pumps
    • Citron Alex Wang Clutch
    • White Clutch
    • Cognac and Citron Clutch
    • ALL my button downs - especially the light blue, pink and white shirts
    • Bright and cream cashmere pullovers (wore them every day in Spring)
    • Blush moto
    • Full skirts
    • White cotton pullover
    • Old animal print booties (loving them with my white BF's)

Also wearing my pencil skirts and frocks more! Wooohoooo! xox

  • Elizabeth P replied 10 years ago

Hmm, I'm also a converse hi-ness twin, and you didn't wave to me.  Know why?  Because THEY ARE STILL IN THE BOX!!  I totally expected these to be loved - when they first came the weather was so yucky I didn't want to get them dirty, and now I struggle a bit  with styling them :(. So thanks for pointing them out as your workhorse... I am going to wear those babies this weekend, and get them in rotation.  It's time!

My surprising workhorse is a Gap pink and white striped sweater that a friend gave me...it's become my go-to when I want to be casual and comfy and still look nice.  I think the surprise is the colour, it's a new one for me, but it works.

    Also loving white jeans :)

  • clairelouise2 replied 10 years ago

Next Lift & Shape Straight leg jeans - my version of skinnies.
Dorothy Perkins grey pencil skirt. It just goes with everything.
    Next blingy nude slipper flats.
New Look faded denim jacket. I got it off Ebay and wear it all the time.

  • Karie replied 10 years ago

Suz, I am so inspired by your style! You are gorgeous in everything you wear.
    My workhorses right now:

Both AE denim jackets (dark wash and distressed) - an Angie pic :)
Leith woven track pants - another Angie pic :)
    Light gray Chuck Taylor's
    TR Brianna's (from last year)
Gap boyfriend shirts (I love them and own 3)

I am still debating on the purchase of the KUT Catherine's - it'll either be those or a full length white jean. If it's the KUTs, they'll be replacing a similar pair that has been a summer workhorse for over 5 years now.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

I love reading about everybody's experiences! And thank you, Angie, and Aziriphale, and Vicki, for those generous compliments.

Angie - high five, and I should also have mentioned my wide BELTS; I bought two several weeks ago in Stratford (white and animal print) and had one of them on most days since! (Pics 4. 5, 6) Also my VC tube skirts, which are coming into their own at last after sitting unworn all winter. (I could not wear them with hose). Pic below

Diana, blue patent shoes sound like my fuchsia jacket. So unexpectedly right!

Makrame, I love that blue sweater of yours.

Oldmsthrifty, it sounds as if white jeans are a popular pick here!

Vicki, glad you love that Jeneva-recommended belt and oh, how gorgeous you look in your Burberry. There was a worthwhile splurge.

Aziriphale, your skirt sounds fantastic, and I know the joys of repurposing an item and suddenly wearing it like crazy. My vintage kimono jacket is a bit like that.

Isabel, what you say totally makes sense, and I do the same thing, sometimes buying an inexpensive item to try it out and see if it could become a workhorse.

Thistle, I am with you on the beauty of gold shoes! They are neutral for me, too.

Raisin, high five! Jeans and sneakers to the rescue for the MOTG!!

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Cross-posted! Karie, you are too kind. And high five, another sneaker and TR wearer! Angie's picks are the best!! :-)

ClaireLouise2, I hear you about a grey pencil being useful. Grey is such a fantastic neutral.

Elizabeth, you look stunning in pink!! And get those sneakers outta the box. As you can see, wearing them with white jeans is a no-brainer. And I wear mine with regular jeans too (light and dark) and with skirts. They work surprisingly well -- a tiny bit "stumpifying" but because the contrast is quite low with my light skin, nowhere near as bad as I had feared.

  • sarah replied 10 years ago

    1. All my BF jeans, including my white Kuts

    2. All my BF shorts, both denim and GAP khaki

    3. My new Miz Mooz Padma sandals in flame and my old Miz Mooz ankle strap yellow snake skin sandals from last year.

    4. My white belt.

    5. My "new" thrifted Fossil yellowish belt. The only thrifted item in my wardrobe.

    6. Woven tank tops. I need more!

    7. Angie-recommended MK flutter sleeve top shown here in the plus version (the only sizes available), which I bought in two colors and find very flattering despite having an almost-cap sleeve.

ETA: Obviously, it's finally warming up here. I hope it warms up there soon, too! How are you wearing your floral jacket? I have one now, too.

  • Wendi1984 replied 10 years ago

I wear my denim jacket a lot! It's a great fit, and has some stretch and softness, so it's very comfy.

I bought some floral skinny jeans at Macy's that I've been wearing more than I thought I would. They seem to go with almost every top I own, and they're very comfy.

And finally, my cropped skinny boyfriend jeans from Old Navy. So comfy!

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

Your workhorses are all fabulous pieces and very "you" Suz. I totally agree with you in that it seems almost impossible to predict what is going to turn out to be your workhorse. I wonder why that is? And do you think "workhorse" translates into "favorite" item?

    Anyway, mine would be:

    • taupe patent pointy toe kitten heel pumps
    • white BF jeans
    • bone/silver sandals
    • bone laser cut oxfords
    • white leather jacket
    • white blazer
    • black silky shorts
    • black silky slouchy trousers
    • citron clutch
    • white cluth
    • white satchel
    • white leather belt
In the cooler weather before the heat hit, the list also included:
    • navy London Fog trench coat
    • Petty python booties
Wow - there are a lot of white items in my list...interesting.

  • shedev replied 10 years ago

This won't surprise you, Suz. The taupe Aldo booties. Also the olive cargos, Ella Moss moto, distressed silver belt, and Sketchers hidden wedge shoes.

  • MsMary replied 10 years ago

For me, the winner by a mile is the white satchel from Banana Republic.  I was unsure about keeping it, and I'm so glad Angie put her foot down and insisted!

I'm also loving my mint shirt, which I got for a song at Marshall's.  It's really freshened up my spring/summer wardrobe!

ETA: Also my white pumps!  Love 'em!!

  • clairelouise2 replied 10 years ago

Oh! And footwear wise, my beige wedge booties. I know, beige. BUT... they go with EVERYTHING, are a really nice shape to work with my chunky calves and they are soooo comfy.

  • replied 10 years ago

First off are my new mint cons. I bought them on a slight whim and now I love them and have worn them all week because my back injury has preventd me wearing a heel for the time being. I even looked online today to see of I can duplicate them but they have sold out in quite a few places unless I pay more than the first pair cost.
Secondly the pale coral trench I made a few weeks ago has barely been off my back since.
And thirdly my leopard print cardi, I love it! I got it on sale at half price, again on a whim and come autumn when the weather turns cooler again it will be worn lots.
I'm sure I probably have more but thats it for now. Fun thread :)

  • Glory replied 10 years ago

I have a few items that I seem to be wearing every week, sometimes a few times per week
    - white straight leg jeans from joe fresh
    - navy loose fitting tshirt with eyelet sleeves
    - pewter sperrys
    - ON boyfriend jeans
    - pink cotton shirt
    - the new blue purse from Danier
    - fossil belt

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Glory, so glad you are enjoying your new Danier bag! And the rest of your items sound eminently useful.

Diane, high-five! I am an astonished Con convert!! I hope your back feels better soon. Also, that trench looks so good on you, no wonder you wear it a lot.

Clairlouise, for sure beige is useful, especially in spring. And it bookends light hair.

Mary, I am glad Angie put her foot down about that bag, too. You wear it so very well. Love seeing all the outfits it's showed up in!

Shedev - TAUPE!! And you can high-five Aziriphale on olive cargo.

Shannon, I was surprised at how many workhorses I had, too, and how many of them were lighter coloured. Yours are similar and fall into similar categories.

I think workhorses are sometimes our favourites. And sometimes they're just super-useful essentials. Items that seem to tie other outfits together, or almost to make an outfit in themselves. Or maybe they are essentials with something extra -- a little kick. I'm not sure.

Wendi, it's funny how useful a floral item can be, isn't it? I would have thought it would be a "meh" but no!

Sarah, I am trying to get my head around you in a plus sized item. Pics, please!! I'm not at all surprised you are wearing your BFs since they look so great on you. And I want to see your floral jacket!! I am wearing mine mostly with jeans more or less as pictured (or with my white jeans) but have also worn it with a skirt once.

  • Rambling Ann replied 10 years ago

Nine West crushable straw hat. I bought it for a trip later this summer, but I wear it with gear, with my city uniform, whenever I want. High happy factor.  And my acid green denim jacket, so cheerful.

  • missvee replied 10 years ago

Hands down the winner for me has been my white jeans. For someone who hadn't owned a pair in at least 10 years I've fallen hard :-). I now have 3 pairs because they are just so versatile. I started out wearing them with nude coloured booties all through our cold Spring. Now I've switched to sandals, sneakers and espadrilles. I could easily wear them every day of the week!
Now, if you start a thread about our *misses* I could bend your ear there too...

  • nancylee replied 10 years ago

Great question, Suz!  So far my workhorse surprises are:

    1) Both of my mesh sweaters (Hinge navy metallic and Soft Joie ivory) Since it's been a cool spring/summer so far, these sweaters are getting a lot of wear for casual outings.  I'm really happy about this because I wasn't sure I would get much use out of them!

    2) My ivory Perlina bag.  It dresses up every outfit.

  • cinnamon fern replied 10 years ago

white jeans - a surprise workhorse only because it's a surprise that it's still cold enough to wear jeans in June

flat gold sandals (like Thistle) - a surprise because they are flat!  and I actually wear them!

  • replied 10 years ago

I would say the Express blouses I posted about have saved the day for me. Other than that my bags, shoes and accesories always pull my look together.

  • DonnaF replied 10 years ago

My $50 shiny silver oxfords from the Rack that I bought on a whim!  They are starting to look trashed :(  but they go with so many things and make me smile.

Also, my pear green colored cross-body bag.  It automatically makes a darkish outfit look more spring/summery.  It is proving far more versatile than my red & black bag in the same style.  I have learned that a bag color that *goes* works better than one that sorta kinda matches but actually clashes.  At some point I would also like to have a yellow bag for a pop of color since I have no yellow clothing but yellow would *go* with what I have.

Not such a surprise:  My black with white polka dot scarf from Target.  When I misplaced it, I bought a duplicate in panic.  Then, of course, I found the missing scarf.

And yes, I can't seem to predict which items will ultimately prove to be my workhorses, and sometimes this is dependent upon the season's temperature and rainfall.

  • Karie replied 10 years ago

Oh and I forgot to mention my Gap Sexy BF jeans. I couldn't make up my mind (typical) on the size, so I bought two - my size and my "plus one." I wear them all weekend long, I have to be pried out of them come Monday morning!

  • Mona replied 10 years ago

What an interesting and fun thread! I was thinking to do a recap of this year so far as we are already half way through this year. Here are my unexpected wardrobe workhorses, that I have really enjoyed buying.
Pic 1 is the white belt from target (thanks to merwoman) I have been wearing it with everything. Also, this top from GAP has served me really well through spring and now with our cold summer.
Pic 2,3 & 4 show the ever famous cons. They go well with the white belt and get worn at least twice every week.
Pic 4 is the striped topper from BR and as you all know is very versatile piece.
These are my favourites but so far everything I have bought, I have really enjoyed wearing because I am putting a lot of thought into my clothes shopping this year.

  • Lyn D. replied 10 years ago

As it is cool and damp here now, it has been my thrifted black suede booties- they go with everything.
Also like Angie, a black animal bomber jacket, and a silver-grey belt too.

  • rae replied 10 years ago

    Hm, good question, Suz!

I knew my Camerons would be favorites, since I'd had BF jeans last year. Ditto on my Equipment cat shirt... Let's see...

    • My brown acetate trench. I chose it thinking of travel, but it turned out to be a wonderful weight for everyday S/S in California. I can wear it in the morning and night and pack it away into my purse when it's hot.
    • My olive long vest. $8 at a thrift store, and thought of as a gamble. Now it's my favorite "completer" piece at work because it adds structure and interest without being too warm.
    • My bodycon Nicole Miller galaxy dress. Bought for $20 figuring it'd made a good party dress, but when it's de-bombshelled it is super comfy to move around in at work.
    • My off-white Camerons. I knew I liked the fit, but the color was a risk. Now it is 100% tried and true!
Very useful to think about as we approach the new season - unlocking the whys and hows of surprise workhorses might bring even better purchases for Fall, right?

  • Lyn D. replied 10 years ago

Suz, I love your cat blouse too!

  • Nicole D replied 10 years ago

White jeans (seem to be on everyone's list)
    Blush crepe blazer
    Nude/pink oxfords
    Navy sloan BR cropped pants
    Kenneth Jay Lane butterfly necklace

    Love this thread!

  • Gaylene replied 10 years ago

A Cath Kidson bag that my sister brought back from England for me. It is accompanying me everywhere this spring.

  • lyn* replied 10 years ago

Definitely my pink blazer. Who knew there were so many ways to wear pink?

  • rebekahphoto replied 10 years ago

Suz, I am inspired by your style & gracefulness! you always look so good in the photos too! This is a great thread, its very interesting to see the similarities and why certain items are favs across the board.....

After years of wearing black leather jackets, I am now loving a little more color!

    • -Ivory leather moto
it has been almost in daily rotation for the last few weeks. I never considered a white leather before ylf, thinking it created too little contrast with my hair (blond)

    • - Ink blue moto. first wear today. its been sitting for a few months. Blue has always been my favorite color. It is super soft & a little more unexpected than black. (i'm not on team wear just yet.....)
    • - Magenta Nike Frees "sassy sneakers" to me. I have never been a sneaker fan, and have had to look at more soft footwear for foot issues lately. They are a great fun bit of color to boot!
    • Taupe Boutique 9 Booties. These are low + buckles & RATE. very soft leather & were an Angie pick ages ago. The taupe color has become a great workhorse for me & now since they are nearly shot I am searching now for a good replacement.....
  • Sveta replied 10 years ago

I have been keeping a spreadsheet of how many times I wear everything (for clothing and shoes) since April so it was easy for me to look in it to determine what are my workhorses this spring. Here is where surprise comes: I don't have many clear winners! Looks like I wear most of my stuff pretty equally.
However some of them a bit more often than others:
    - white leather moto jacket
    - yellow Gap blazer
    - SE python booties
    - David Tate animal print booties
    - Page straight jeans and BF jeans
    - slouchy micro-check trousers

I also wear my wide belts a lot - snake, leopard prints and white studded one.
Also I did not have a chance to wear a lot of summer stuff yet because our summer is lost somewhere...

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Oh, Sveta, I know....summer has been lost somewhere in another hemisphere...or galaxy. i would have put my leather jacket on the list, too, but I have stopped wearing it for now. It was in heavy rotation from the day I bought it until three weeks ago.

Rebekah, thank you for the kind compliments, and of course I have to love the great taste of any woman who wears taupe booties and ink blue and bone leather jackets!

Lyn, high-five!! Your pink jacket is like my fuchsia jacket. It is positively shocking (har har) how well a bright pink can work in a girl's wardrobe! So flattering, too.

Gaylene, I love that bag, and no wonder you are using it a lot. It adds just the right punch of levity, plus it is a great size.

Lyn, thank you - -and I hear you on black booties. I could actually still be wearing mine, too, but I insisted to myself that I was putting them away and that was that!

Rae, there was a reason for your long trench search last year, I think. On some deep level you knew that the right one would be a complete winner for you. And now you have it. Also, I completely identify with the love for Nicole Miller dresses after my big sheath success. I will be scouring ebay for those and for more Camerons. I never did buy the white ones - I am nervous about ebaying to Canada. But maybe I should bite the bullet and join the ebay club.

Mona, you look sensational in each and every one of these! I love the Cons on you. They are so fab with the white belt. And the leaf sweater and shirt are so fresh on you. Not to mention the BR sweater. I've still been wearing mine, too. Will it never warm up? Yet it's also great to get so much wear from spring pieces.

Nicole, that necklace is stunning on you. And yes, it seems a lot of us are in love with white jeans this year. It's funny because I even thought of dyeing mine in the fall! So glad I didn't.

Karie, we are all in love with our BFs, it seems!

Rambling Ann, I'd love to see that hat.

Missvee, white jeans, white jeans! I know what you mean. And yes, do start a thread about our "misses." In my own case I'm holding out hope that they will still be hits when warmer weather hits, because mostly I just haven't been wearing because of the temperatures.

Nancy, I've been wearing so many more sweaters than usual, too!

    CF -- more popular choices!

Zap, you have the best accessories. I can well believe that with them and those tops you look like a million!

Donna, I am with you on the hunt for a yellow bag. I agree absolutely that a fun contrasting colour is such a great summer staple.

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

What a great thread! As for me, my first thought goes to shoes and my most worn shoes this summer (it is definitely summer already here) are my bone peep toe loafers, my Anyi Lu wedges, and my black and white pointy toe flats. I have not worn sandals yet. A surprise workhorse is this zara top I bought http://www.zara.com/il/en/woma.....28059.html in light blue. It is polyester but somehow does not make me too hot and cleans so easily. I am sure there are others but I will have to think about it.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Oooh! Love that top, Shevia. And your shoes are all deservedly favourites!

  • Mo replied 10 years ago

Sadly, my Dansko Veda's are #1 by a huge margin, simply because I have 6 shifts a week in uniform and they are my most oft worn pair for work.  Next up is probably my BF jeans. The Cameron's because I can wear them to work, but the Vigoss have my heart and I wear them whenever I can outside of work.

  • Archer replied 10 years ago

My impulsive and initially regretted sleeveless fur jacket. I really lashed out, for me and I thought I had blundered big time but I have come to love it now. I think, of course, it was learning how. To we a r it and, thanks to you guys, feeling I wasn't we airing a Nanna piece as a laggard to the trend. Somewhat shallow- but I love it. PS it's not vegan, it's vermin- thanks to all the Brits here and the introduction of the bunny to Australia. What a stroke of Imperial fashion forethought they had.

  • Archer replied 10 years ago

Sveta: keep it coming. I love your uncluttered inspiration!

  • Joy replied 10 years ago

My surprise workhorses are my blush jeans which are now a neutral. The color is new to me and therefore fresh.

Love this thread, Suz.  You are doing such a fabulous job of building a marvelous, well curated wardrobe!
    My surprising workhorses?

    White Cons (who knew?)
    BF jeans and shorts
White jeans and white jean shorts
    Belts and faux tucking
    Cobalt ponte jacket
    Printed, Georgette blouses
    Midi, ponte pencils

I've been focusing on interesting, super casual Summer outfits.  I can count on the Cons and the BF's to carry a look.  The cool weather has kept me in pants longer than usual, but that's fine by me!  I love Spring/Fall weather!

Tomorrow is the annual family day at the amusement park.  It's definitely challenging  to look good while standing in line and riding roller coasters (I get special Mom points for this, don't I?).

Oh wow - LOVE all of the pics of everybody's workhorses on this thread!  So much fun to look at - and definitely everyone seems to have easily identified their high-happiness factor wardrobe items!
I've got a few - and just for reference - we haven't had any summer weather here - unless you count upper 60's - so, I'm not really wearing many of my summer clothes yet - but here are my spring surprising favorites!
1.)  Olive green oversized military style vest.  Yep, olive green - sooooooo not my color!  But, I wear it over blue, teal, turquoise, pink - and it looks great - and is a great light cover-up for me.  Bought it at Fashion 21 - that's another reason that it is such a surprise to me!
2.)  Ivory slouchy skinny Paige jeans - LOVE. The thread on the seams and detailing is taupe - and it works perfect with my color-scheme.  I can wear them with both heeled shoes and even flats - and don't feel dumpy-frumpy!
3.)  White (OMG!) jeans - T.R. Boyfriend Vintage Camerons - distressed and baggy. Never thought that I would like white jeans - but, I love these (got them on eBay - brand new with tags and for a quarter of the price of what they retail for.)
    4.  Neon pink GAP sweater - stretches out everytime I wear it, but the color makes me sooooo happy - and I wear it with blue denim, gray, and white on the bottom.
    5.  White linen blazer that I discovered hanging in the back of my closet.  Bought it several years ago (can't remember where) and never wore it - not once.  This spring I've worn it probably 5 times a week as a topper.
    6. Light gray AE slouchy skinnies - soft and comfy and spring-looking.
    7.  Black w/gray stripes jersey pencil skirt from Target.  I wear with structured blouses or a slouchy sweatshirt and my black ankle boots.  Never thought I would enjoy wearing this skirt so much, but it really fits my style!

So, looking at my list - its obvious that I live in jeans most of the time.  Three different pair are on this list - and I could easily add another one to the list.  In my climate I can wear jeans almost year round, except for a few weeks in September, so they are practical, as well as stylish!

    Very fun thread Suz!

    YLF Suz.

For summer my printed French Connection pants were bought on a whim & worn at least twice a week into autumn.

My SE snakeskin booties & my silver booties - they both go with everything & lift every outfit. I seem to rotate these two pairs most days.

My white belt & jeans - pre YLF but I didn't wear them much until I found you all :)

Caro, high five!! My Petty booties were definitely on my most worn list from January (when I got them) to the end of April!

Marley, I love your list and I think I need a pair of those Paige slouchy skinnies! May PM you for details! You and Rae can high-five each other over the olive vest thing! And don't you just love finding something in your closet that suddenly works?

Beth Ann, welcome to the white jeans, Cons, and cobalt-love club!! And yes, you definitely get point for doing the rides in whatever you wear!

Joy, you and blush are a match made in heaven. And it must remind you of Japan, too.

    Archer, you are a hoot!

Mo -- high five on the Camerons and yay for the Danskos~

Thanks for indulging my question everybody!

My $10 dark blue flats from Ardene! Due to crappy cool and rainy weather, this is the first spring in years that I actually feel the need for a transitional shoe. I now wish I had made the time to find oxfords, but I didn't. Meanwhile, my $180, well-thought-out, hopefully workhorse walking sandals from NAOT are just coming out to play for the first time today.
I never really got into ballet flats before.  They don't usually fit me well, so I'm loathe to buy a 'real' pair. The other factor is figuring out how to wear them, thanks to ylf  - sockless and with my jeans either rolled up, or long enough for some scrunch!.

Well I've come back to this thread twice today in order to finish reading all of the comments. It's so great to see what every one is loving so far this season.

First Suz, let me say that you look fantastic in every single outfit. Angie is not exaggerating when she says you have your style nailed! You provide endless inspiration for me, and everyone else I'm sure! ;)

I'm surprised that I've been wearing my sequinned and gem encrusted sandals so much. They are cheapies, and could skew a bit tacky, but I bought them because they were so comfortable. They are by far the lightest sandal I have and the easiest to slip on so i have to restrain myself from wearing them every. single. day. (esp.with outfits that are ALGO).

I hope I'm allowed to chime in a day late. It's so inspiring to see what everyone's go to items have been, especially as we go into winter down here in NZ. And I can confirm where summer has been hiding for so long - for ages and ages it was here!

My summer workhorse was a cheap and colorful maxi dress I bought on a whim because I felt like wearing something floaty. It was far too casual to wear anywhere other than the beach or home, but since we sent most of the time in those two places it was often the thing I reached for. Even though it was much more boho than I usually wear, it just made me feel feminine, a bit surfy and salt-tousled.

Now that it's colder here I have rediscovered blue jeans. It was all coloured jeans here last season and I didn't realize how much I missed jeans until nothing in my wardrobe seemed to work anymore. I actually sighed with relief when I got a pair of skinniest and straights. I've lived in them and tan boots (they bookend my hair) ever since.

So far I'm a white jeans convert, too!  And I have been surprised at how many times I have worn my turquoise jeans, although I really should have bought a smaller size.  I also have had a lot of use out of a black maxi dress I bought on a whim, my ancient black jean jacket which has gone into and out of retirement multiple times, and the black sandals I bought at K-Mart earlier this year.

Unfortunately the sandals make my feet a bit stinky but they are extremely comfortable and required no breaking in at all, so I'm willing to overlook the stinkiness for now.  I've been looking for sandals that I can actually walk in without blisters or heel pain for many years

New purchases at the beginning of the season that are workhorses already:
-Gap sexy bootcut jean, I purchased a mid wash and a dark wash pair and I am constantly reaching for the mid wash pair.
-Cobalt straight leg jeans, I purchased these for a birthday party and I've been wearing them at least once a week since.  They have replaced my green jeans from last year, which I also still have, but I keep reaching for the cobalt instead.
-Cable ribbed 3/4 sleeve sweater, I picked up two a white and a light grey and I can't wash and wear them fast enough on our cooler days.

Items from last year that are still going strong:
-Denim jacket, I got over my denim on denim fear and now I sport this jacket often with my bootcut jeans.
-Tan short boots, since I've been wearing bootcut jeans more often lately, these have become workhorses, I've even been wearing them on rainy days because I like them so much right now.

    New purchases already collecting dust:
-Red knit blazer, for some reason I'm just not layering as often right now.
-White open cardigan, again just not layering right now. I keep reaching for a pullover on cooler days instead.
-Black trouser shorts, I'm not sure what I was thinking, with my white legs and casual style, these are not working for me.  I keep reaching for denim shorts instead.
