WIW: A Skirt for -22 (and Amy's scarf)

Okay. Shannon wins

But you know what they say. -20 in the damp air feels like -40 in Winnipeg's dry air.

And it's -22 here today.

Plus -- for once -- it is sunny! There's fresh snow, but the roads are plowed. Not only that, but I was going out in the CAR rather than on foot.

Which meant that my poor, neglected La Canadiennes, the well fitting dressy weatherproof boot that I sought for so long, and now, in this year of freakish snow and ice and bitter cold have managed to wear only three times, could finally get an outing.

Despite having a 3 inch heel, these boots are incredibly well balanced for my foot and they have a lot of grip -- they are, in fact, a true winter boot. But they're a city winter boot -- not a boot meant for plowing through mountains of uncleared snow.  Nor are they really up to negotiating serious ice or deep slush or for 40 minute walks in -20 temperatures. And that is the kind of winter we've had.

Another neglected love -- my GAP sweater. I can only wear this with another turtleneck underneath it to stop me from itching.

Also wearing my secret Santa Amy's sparkly scarf. Amy, if you are reading, I got a compliment on it today!

Totally gorgeous! Love the more or less monochromatic look. Keep warm!!

  • replied 10 years ago

Absolutely gorgeous, Suz! You've inspired me to try and wear a skirt tomorrow!

  • Elizabeth P replied 10 years ago

    Another awesome look from Suz!
I was wondering where those boots were... I hear ya on the winter.  I ended up buying another pair of winter boots this year (which I technically needed like a hole in the head) that would survive the crazy conditions. I found I wasn't wearing any of my skirts/dresses becaue my boots were either not winterized, or too wintery.  Canucks get that :)

  • Beth Ann replied 10 years ago

You look amazing.  Those boots are gorgeous and practical, which is a rarety, and the proportions of your outfit are relaxed but absolutely fab.  And you've managed to be cozy and bring lighter shades into the mix!

Fortunately for me, the Polar Vortex, now dubbed for posterity a Polar Plunge, has closed my University for 2 days straight.  I have resolved, however, to bundle up and venture forth to the gym and the grocery store.  Later, I'm heading to dinner with a friend, which will, oh yes, involve actually dressing!  In real clothes!  Maybe I'll wear a skirt!  I just purchased Jockey "slipshorts" in black and nude.  I pull them over my tights to keep my skirts from sticking and to add another layer.  They run large, so I sized down.

Your outfit looks flattering, (both in line and in color) cozy and beautiful! I love the different tones of grey and the texture in your sweater, boots and scarf. What a cold winter you all are having. I'm glad to see it hasn't stopped you from looking absolutely smashing! Keep warm up there! :)

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Slipshorts!!! That sounds like a fantastic idea, Beth Ann. I must investigate those. Did you get them just at the department store? I don't think the Bay has them. They would have been great with this denim pencil skirt.

Elizabeth, I also bought more boots this year!! Altogether, I have bought 4 pair of boots! Okay, only 3 were intended for winter wear (one is an all leather fashion boot in a light colour...spring and fall only.) But in addition to those and 2 pairs of La Canadiennes, I had to go out and get myself some genuine snow boots. And that is what I have worn ever since! I know these La Canadiennes will not date -- I'll probably be wearing them a decade from now -- and heaven knows they are comfortable. But still. For the price I had hoped to wear them more this year.

Fortunately, I have been getting a lot of wear from my black La Canadiennes. They are a little more casual so work with more of my regular outfits.

    Thanks for the compliments, all!

The sweater & scarf are great colors on you, and it's wonderful to see your sleek, well-fitting boots on!

  • catgirl replied 10 years ago

Love it! Have the kamiks worked for you? I know they aren't high fashion...

  • replied 10 years ago

What a fab look. The denim and grey tones all play nicely and I adore your tights!

  • Emily replied 10 years ago

Looks great, Suz!  I'm glad the La Canadiennes saw some wear, they are gorgeous and a perfect fit.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Una, are you joking? I have hardly had the Kamiks OFF since I got them. The CPW is almost nothing. They are perfect. They go with my puffer and are so warm and have kept me dry. I actually love them. For this winter, they are the best purchase yet! So thank you!

  • pil replied 10 years ago

Suz, you even LOOK warm in this. Those boots are absolutely gorgeous! I won't be posting my subzero driveway snow shoveling outfit today. It was a real looker - red Kamiks, my son's old pair of snow pants and LE puffer. At least I was warm :)

  • Lisa replied 10 years ago

I hear you with the weather interfering with dressing.  I am not wearing my light booties as often as I would like, because there is too much salt on the roads and I don't want salt on them (they are material and will not clean as easily as my black leather one's.)

  • Ornella replied 10 years ago

What a gorgeous outfit. Sort of minimal in terms of colours, but maximal in terms of action (textures, patterns) while being beautifully balanced. I love the sleek bangle and I looove those hose :-D

    p.s.

    LOL @ Shannon wins :-)

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

And now, we interrupt this broadcast for a snow squall warning.

Yup. The weather has turned. Major blizzard.

     La Canadiennes off, Kamiks on!

  • Aquamarine replied 10 years ago

You look great Suz! Casual but put-together....and WARM!

  • Caro in Oz replied 10 years ago

YLF. Those boots are amazing - darn weather :)

  • catgirl replied 10 years ago

Yay! You are putting them to the ultimate test. I am amazed at how little they weigh for the warmth....

  • unfrumped replied 10 years ago

    Very cool--er, warm! And brave.
SO need to join the tall boots party. You do them swell.

  • Gracie replied 10 years ago

Beautiful neutrals, proportions and textures – the lighter colors in the scarf really light up your face. These colors are right up my alley at this time of year. I'm in awe of your ability to sport a dress and 3" heel boots in your current weather – I need for it to be 50° before I wear my "winter" dresses lol – you and Shannon put me to shame.

  • Joy replied 10 years ago

The coziness factor must be sky high even if the temperatures aren't. I have a pair of Cuddle Duds shorts that are ideal to wear over tights under a skirt. No idea if they still sell that length, but longer ones could be shortened. Cuddle Duds wear like iron.

  • Lyn D. replied 10 years ago

Yes I see the commonalities Suz!
You look so lovely in grey, and it is a shame you don't get to wear this jumper.............. (oops cat feet) more often. At least this is one good thing about you cold snap?

  • MuseumGal replied 10 years ago

Those tights!  With the boots!  And the scarf!  And the whole thing! Yay!  *clapping*

  • krishnidoux replied 10 years ago

Aw, Suz, you sum it up so well! That is exactly how it is this year. Me too, here with super El Naturalista heeled mid-calf winter boots, got maybe one or two wears, can't wait for the weather to become just a bit milder... heck, we're talking ideally -10 rather than -20. And all that snow! A bit is cute... now shoveling every day in boring boots and coat is not fun anymore.

Your outfit is amazingly chic in the circumstances! Got to love those Canadiennes on you.

  • Joyce B replied 10 years ago

What a pretty outfit. Your La Canadiennes are fabulous.
I think you inspired me to wear a skirt and my Canadiennes tomorrow.

  • Karie replied 10 years ago

Major blizzard? Don't send it my way! We finally broke 0 F today, it's a heat wave!

You look fantastic! Are you wearing plaid tights? I love them! And definitely try Jockey Slipshorts, they're fantastic. I got mine at JCP.

  • MRL replied 10 years ago

Suz, you look wonderful! My hat is off to you, it doesn't get that cold where I live. I think if it did I would just throw in the towel, but you look both stylish and warm. Oh, and I like the scarf.

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

Fun and super cuddly. Quite a different look for you, Suz. A little "Diana-esque". You wear it well.

So the G aran in getting some wear after all. Good stuff.

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

The description of your weather has me shivering in sympathy. I would probably just stay in bed until winter went away but you manage to look super through it all.

  • Ingunn replied 10 years ago

Isn't it great to finally be able to change things up a bit? I get bored so quickly with wearing the same silhouette all the time when the weather isn't cooperating. Your outfit is very practical, yet stylish and fab. I love your boots and am glad to see that you get more chances to wear them. Great scarf, too!

  • Janet replied 10 years ago

Well heck, if you guys can wear skirts in your cold, maybe I should try it today. It's getting all the way up to 24 here today -- woohoo!

This looks great. Cozy but polished.

  • Neel replied 10 years ago

I think what makes this outfit is the subtle textures all around. Love it!!

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

Well it's a competition I could have done without winning - lol!

I love this warm layered look on you Suz. It's got a lovely soft color palette which somehow makes it look even cozier. And now you've got me thinking about how to wear my denim skirt for winter...

  • Sara L. replied 10 years ago

Great outfit!  I love the warm cozy scarf in the neutral colors.  We're supposed to hit 66 F (19 C) tomorrow here.  It sounds great but it's way too warm for this time of year.  Drought and fire warnings are already in effect.
