WIW: Borrowed Finery & Waist Surrendering MIdi

Most of my Banff dressing was super casual. But I did have several big "occasions."

For our opening reception, I did indeed wear the boyfriend jeans, black jacket, sequin top that I had modelled for you before leaving. I know that combo was not to everyone's taste for an opening arts event, but honestly, it was the PERFECT outfit. The "reception" was really a reading followed by drinks in the lounge. So the outfit really worked and I actually wore the exact same thing a couple of times to similar evening dos. Here's the link:

My "surprise" event was the midsummer ball! A friend of mine came up from Calgary for this fundraiser event and a friend of hers got me a seat. The trouble? What to wear? Although I had brought my simple black jersey dress and had a few items to dress it up a bit, I didn't have super formal accessories.

Friends to the rescue! My friend loaned me (and in the end, generously GAVE me) some lovely black suede wedges with pale neutral criss-cross tops. Her friend loaned me a gorgeous Debbie Suchat jacket (oh, how I wanted to keep that jacket!) some gold-toned pearls, and a dinner ring. My clutch was silver (only one I had with me) but the textures worked, and I told myself I was good to go. Sorry for the iphone pics - only ones I could get.

For my own public reading, I went out and splurged on this fun cut-out shoulder, asymmetrical hemmed top and midi skirt. You can't really see details in the pic, unfortunately, but I'm sure I'll show you the outfit again later this fall; I figured it would be excellent for the WritersFest events I'm involved in and will carry me into fall.

Both these outfits are beautiful on you Suz. I can see why you would want to keep that jacket - so gorgeous! And how sweet of your friend to gift you those beautiful shoes.

Your black cut-out top/midi outfit is stunning - sleek, chic, simple, classic, edgy all rolled into one...swoon....

  • ramya replied 11 years ago

Suz you look sooooooooooooooooo lovely in both...
    Missed you around... Welcome back...

  • nancylee replied 11 years ago

So gorgeous, Suz! Love the new top and skirt. LIke you said, I think they will be perfect for upcoming events. And that JACKET! Is there any way you can find a duplicate for yourself? It looks divine.

Good to see your pretty face here on YLF. We've missed you. :)

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

Oh, I SO wish I could find a jacket like that. It would be quite pricey, I fear. Though to tell the truth, I'd pay that price if I could find it. It's a few seasons old, a Debbie Suchat that the owner bought in Toronto on Queen Street in some undisclosed boutique.

    So lovely!

  • velvetychocolate replied 11 years ago

Just spectacular Suz! Both outfits are just gorgeous on you, and you did well with that new midi and asymmetrical top. WOW.

You're going to have to find a jacket like that too. It looks amazing on you.

  • JR replied 11 years ago

    Oh. My. Goodness.

    Absolutely gorgeous.

  • MsMary replied 11 years ago

Oh my goodness, Suz! You are a stunner!

    Welcome home! I missed you!!

  • rae replied 11 years ago

Wow, I can see why you wanted that jacket! How nice to have friends in the same size with generous hearts. Your new cut out top looks very fun - so excited to see more of it in Fall!

  • biscuitsmom replied 11 years ago

    Simply gorgeous!

  • Tina replied 11 years ago

You have a knack for picking same sized friends:) Did you make sure and tell her that if she EVER tired of her jacket to send it to you?
You are stylish and beautiful in all these outfits!

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

How lucky that you fitted into your friends shoes and jacket!

I would LOVE to see the details more clearly, Suz. Please take more pics for us when you can. Your new splurge has killer potential!!

    You look beautiful :)

  • Jonesy replied 11 years ago

Oh, what a fun and fab recap!! I agree with Angie that it would be so great to see some better shots :). Your new midi looks elegant and beautiful, and the borrowed jacket looks super-fab.

  • MNsara replied 11 years ago

Wowza! You looked gorgeous and stylish for both events!

Lucky you to have such nice, and perfectly sized, friends :-) And your own black outfit looks very elegant and chic (and looks ike it could easily have been worn to the ball with different accessories).

    Amazing! and welcome home!

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

    Thanks, everyone!

I WAS super lucky with those borrowed duds, wasn't I? It was quite amazing. The friend who gave me the shoes is actually a completely different clothing size (she is taller and larger but just has unusually small feet for her size). Her friend, who loaned me that lovely jacket, was in fact my size.

I wish I could get better pics of that, but alas, it has gone back to her. You can bet I will be keeping my eye out for something similar. And I will certainly snap better photos of the new outfit in a few weeks' time. I think it will work really well for the WritersFest and be a great travel companion. I can also wear the top with jeans and my Doc Marcies.

Suz, you stunning thing! I am not sure how much I would have concentrated on the reading - I would have been too busy staring at your outfit! :)

  • Jem replied 11 years ago

Wow!! You look gorgeous! You need a jacket like that! I'm glad you had fun in Banff. You never know what the weather can be, but it sounds like you were prepared!

  • morethanbeige replied 11 years ago

    Suz, you look positively stunning!

  • merwoman replied 11 years ago

    so elegant, so stunning!
I'll keep an eye out (as I'm sure all the YLFers will) for a similar jacket for you - it has to be out there!

  • Jjsloane replied 11 years ago

Just gorgeous. I am loving all of it!

  • Mochi replied 11 years ago

Suz, you look amazing and completely like your stylish self. I love the semi-casual look just as much as the formal. But gorsh, I am madly in love with that jacket on you. Make your friend's friend an offer she can't refuse! (Joking) Well, at least you got a nice pic of you wearing it!

  • sarah replied 11 years ago

Suz, it's so nice to have you back! I'm glad your travel capsule worked so well for you. You are STUNNING in these outfits!

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

Mochi, LOL - I BEGGED her!! Truly begged her. Told her I would pay her any amount!!

    Maybe I should check Ebay.

What was interesting was that this fairly dressy jacket (it was a bit shiny in real life, more a glow than an actual shine) worked brilliantly with jeans, too. Although it was very cropped and would have needed just the right top. But it was such a fab piece.

  • Mochi replied 11 years ago

    eBay is a brilliant idea!

And it's "Shuchat." I even had to google it to see what she's designed. Hope you get your hands on that jacket, or something even better!

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

    Thanks, Mochi!! Off to peruse!

  • jen replied 11 years ago

As Shannon said it so well "Plonk" knock me over with a feather you look so gorgeous!

  • Laura (rhubarbgirl) replied 11 years ago

That cut-out shoulder top is super-cool. Glad your events went so great!

  • CocoLion replied 11 years ago

The Debbie Shuchat (??) jacket works really well on you. Great fit and color. Yes it's worth hunting down one for yourself. It's so made-for-you, I almost wonder if you didn't look better in it than your friend.

Your new dress (or is it a top and skirt) loves you too! Looking forward to seeing more of it.

  • Mona replied 11 years ago

you look totally gorgeous, Suz. Love the jacket.

  • Sveta replied 11 years ago

You need that jacket in your life because it looks gorgeous. What a way to dress up a simple black dress! And what great friends do you have!
Too bad I cannot see the details in the last outfit, that top really intrigues me. I hope you will post it again with a good lighting soon!

  • April replied 11 years ago

Not sure what I can add, Suz -- it's unanimous, You Look(ed) Fab!

  • replied 11 years ago

Oh. My. Goodness. She's back and she's bad! What fantastic outfits! I can't believe how well you're versatile LBD dressed up for a ball. And how wonderful that you had two fairy godmothers to help you with the perfect touches. Those new shoes are amazing--and you get to keep them? Yay! And you had a silver clutch along with you? Wasn't that fortuitous! I personally think mixing your metallics is very chic. I love your drop earrings in the second outfit, and I can't wait to see more pictures of that fab, cold shoulder top. Well done, Suz, and welcome back. You were missed!
