WIW: Boxy shirt under boxy sweater + plaid -- thanks to CocoLion & Angie

This outfit is inspired by Angie, made possible by CocoLion. When Denise offered to send me these Hinge plaid pants, I jumped at the chance. They arrived late yesterday and I couldn't wait to put them on! They fit perfectly, with lots of slouch, yet I can just keep them up without a belt. Denise and I are pretty much the same height, so the length is spot on, also. And on a miserable, hideous raining, sleeting day when I have to give a reading of my work plus Q&A via videoconference, they are comfortable, fun, and an incredibly fresh boost to my winter wardrobe.

But what to wear on top?

Bingo! Angie's blog post answered. Here's my outfit. I tucked the tails of this shirt in because I didn't like the proportion/ drape with them out.

Thank you Denise and Angie! (And also Rae, for spotting the kitty blouse, and Claudia, for helping me get it. Best impulse purchase of last year.)

Leather sleeved denim jacket: Lucky Brand
Sweater: Zara
Shirt: Equipment
Pants: Hinge
Shoes: Zara

ETA: Update. At lunch I got salad oil on my sweater. Boo! Fortunately it will wash out. Here is the updated version with my BR sequinned sweatshirt.

    Enough said!

Gorg!  I love your plaid pants.  I have some plaid, ponte skinnies and I've been wearing them like a mad woman!  You look so great!

  • gryffin replied 10 years ago

Great outfit Suz!!  Polished casual chic at it's finest!

  • Claudia replied 10 years ago

Oh, LOVE these pants on you, Suz. YLF!

  • leopardluxe replied 10 years ago

Love it! Looks fresh and cool and is really figure flattering!

  • April replied 10 years ago

So cute!  Love the plaid pants.

  • MuseumGal replied 10 years ago

    Love this Suz!
I swore off plaid/houndstooth pants several years ago.  They used to be a real staple for me, but at some point I decided that I didn't want the contours of my rear end delineated with such, uh, Cartesian precision.  But you fabbers have totally changed my mind.  I think I need a pair of slouchy plaid trousers to come live with me.

  • Karie replied 10 years ago

Angie to the rescue once again! I am convinced she can read people's minds. And on the very day that you needed it, too! It's one of her many talents.

You look fantastic - I adore those plaid pants. In fact, you have given me inspiration on styling options for mine!

On a side note, I recently purchased your book through Amazon. I'm finishing up a book that has to go back to the library now, and yours is my next read. Can't wait, it looks like a wonderful book, destined to be an all-time fav :)

  • Ornella replied 10 years ago

    Talk about timing.

You look fantastic. I love seeing on you the outfits with the collar peeking from underneath the sweater.

  • Sara L. replied 10 years ago

Great outfit!  I love the plaid pants and the kitty blouse under your sweater.  It seems perfect for the activities planned.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Thank you all!! And Karie, that is SO sweet of you to buy my book.

MG, you would rock plaid pants! I think if you try low-contrast ones first like Shannon's black watch ones (which have the advantage of including that gorgeous dark green that flatters you so well) you will probably feel good in them.

This is a true YLF outfit Suz - idea from Angie, trousers from Denise, shirt via Rae and Claudia. I mean...how cool is that???

This outfit is absolutely fabulous. It is IMHO the definition of "sleekness with slouch". I think that's something I want to figure out.

    You look fab!

  • JAileen replied 10 years ago

I really like this, especially with the jacket. Of course, I'm partial to plaid!

  • deb replied 10 years ago

I love those pants!!!!! the whole look is perfect!

  • PamelaK replied 10 years ago

Another fan of the pants! Like MuseumGal, I had sworn off plaid pants years ago but you, in your superb outfit, have reopened the question.

  • Beth Ann replied 10 years ago

Sisterhood of the traveling pants, no?  This is very imaginative and playful without a hint of "cute" and with a lot of refinement.   The overall look is a bit of modernist prep.

  • adorkable replied 10 years ago

    So much fun!

  • AviaMariah replied 10 years ago

I love this!  Are the pants flannel?  They look like it from the pics.  I wonder how many people wondered how you made pajama bottoms look so good.  I mean that in a good way of course!!

  • Eliza replied 10 years ago

I like this look, Suz.  Those pants work so well and fun to see the subtle kitty pattern mixing.  The gray of that sweater is super on you, perhaps it has a hint of blue in it.  Bravo and good luck with all your events.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Thanks, Eliza. I'd call it a sort of dove grey -- grey is one of my best neutrals as long as it is not greenish. So any true grey or blue grey will work, or charcoal.

AviaMariah, the pants are not flannel, but they are flannel-like, if that makes sense. They don't have the soft nap of flannel, but do have a similar warmth to them. So they're wearable on warmer winter days here -- not on our coldest days. And you're right -- they do look a lot like PJs!! :) They feel pretty much that comfortable, too. Bonus.

I have a sugar eye for tartan. So they make me happy.

I like the punk rock vibe of the shoes and trousers + preppy sweater and shirt.  You look great :)

    Love!

SO MUCH FABNESS ON EVERY LEVEL!!!!

    This is great!

I've really been noticing the apparent fringe trend of plaid/tartan, not just at YLF, especially in pants. Can't believe I am considering adding some back to the collection...

  • kellygirl replied 10 years ago

Super duper! I love this, Suz!

  • Freckles replied 10 years ago

Stunning!  What a fun story about the pants, yah Denise.

  • Marmee replied 10 years ago

    What an amazing outfit.  Love!

  • Sarah A replied 10 years ago

    Awesome! :)

  • Sona replied 10 years ago

Just repeating from Beth Ann and Angie said:

    Killer modernist  fluid prep.
    fab. fab. fab.

  • rachylou replied 10 years ago

I know, I'm supposed to be looking at the boxy shirt and sweater (great combo, btw, Suz!) and determining the possibilities for saving my plaid button downs... but I love the plaid pants!!!

    I need more plaid plants.

  • Helena replied 10 years ago

    awesome - both versions!

  • CocoLion replied 10 years ago

These look so good on you and I love the way you styled them with Angie's ensemble idea.  So glad they found a better home.  And it was so sweet of you to create an outfit using them right away.

  • Lisa replied 10 years ago

Yay to YLF sisterhood, this is a fab look.  I like both toppers with these pants.  Plaid is always a fun look.  I can't wait to see these styled with a moto over them.

  • shedev replied 10 years ago

    Very nice.

  • Aquamarine replied 10 years ago

Great interpretation and those pants are fabulous on you!

  • amiable replied 10 years ago

I thought I'd commented earlier, and now I don't see my comment - but I love both versions!  What to rock the look!

  • Lyn D. replied 10 years ago

I love those plaid pants Suz!
Denise et al are stars for their thoughtfulness and generosity :)

  • Diana replied 10 years ago

    I love both versions!

  • Thistle replied 10 years ago

So fab!  What a quick and terrific interpretation!  You rock this modern minimalist style!

  • replied 10 years ago

Suz, you are too adorable for words! I love everything about this outfit: it's origins and inspiration, it's cool, slouchy vibe, the bright colors, the mixing of patterns and textures (hmmm, color, pattern, texture, shine, anyone?) and then add your beautiful self to the mix and it's sheer perfection. You do so consistently well with your proportions, too. How I wish I could manage heels every day and get my legs to look as long as yours look!

  • lyn67 replied 10 years ago

Oh, so clever! I like the new pants with Angie's formula on top! Great outfit!

  • karymk replied 10 years ago

Suz these look great on you. I am so jalouse~ Why didn't Denise want to keep them? I just pinned a pic of her in these yesterday ha!  I love all the things you paired with them, esp. the  leather.

  • Day Vies replied 10 years ago

So there is more than a little prep in you. Fabulous pants! I especially love it with that jacket. SO classic yet modern. I love love love these looks. Marking as a fave! I hope you're going out this is a look that deserves to be seen!

  • unfrumped replied 10 years ago

Such fun plaid pants. And what an Everything gray sweater--so versatile!
I like the option of tucking shirt for more formal look, too.
But don't you find the looser sweaters are SO much more fun to use for layering? I'm so glad I let myself "give up" layering with fitted sweaters. Strangulation time.

  • E replied 10 years ago

This formula was made for you! As are the pieces you used; I love both sweater variations, although I'm relieved the dressing will wash out.

  • Caro in Oz replied 10 years ago

Love the outfit & love how it came about :)

  • carter replied 10 years ago

Great formula for you! You do the blouse/sweater layering so effortlessly. I can never get all the parts to play nicely together. Those pants are awesome!

  • Vicki replied 10 years ago

So amazing, from plaid to kitty, and I' wear this rain or shine. You look spectacular, Suz.
