WIW: First Boston purchase & question

You know what's crazy? Here is what's crazy. Three days before your big Boston adventure you find a whitehead on your face. So you put a dab of your daughter's acne medicine on it.

And wake up the next morning with an oozing, crusting, flaking BURN on your skin about eight times bigger than the zit ever was.

I'll tell you, I felt pretty darned self-conscious. However, YLF ladies being the sweet souls that they are, they all lied and told me it was not noticeable.

That allowed me to put my energy into shopping.

I tried on a lot. But it was late in the day when I made the first purchase.

Most of you know that I'm a jacket girl. Who -- this winter -- has had no jackets. Well, except for my Zara jacquard and my two Danier leather jackets.

In Reiss, I found "the" jacket. Ink blue, wool, with princess seams, built up shoulders, self-covered buttons. I wish I could show you the detail and quality of this piece. Here's the web link.

Taking a cue from my body type and style sister Viva, I've paired my new purchase with skinnies, a silky shirt, and Cons for a rainy day lunch.

I can't tell you how amazing this jacket is. It's the most expensive item of clothing I have ever purchased. Which is slightly terrifying, until I reason that I could have four "okay" jackets or one amazing one.

Angie and I asked the sales associate if there were trousers to go with it. He said no.

Then I came home and looked at the website. There ARE trousers.

So my question -- do you think it would be worth trying to get a pair to make a suit? The problem is, I would have to order sight unseen, and can't try on. And I will have to get them from the US. So...it's tricky with returns and such. Would love to hear your thoughts on this.

Now you know why your had such a hard time finding a new jacket.  Because this one was waiting for you.  It is perfection!  I am no help with bottoms.  They are hard for me to fit so I would not order sight unseen unless I knew how the brand fit me.

  • Janet replied 10 years ago

Yay! We're both wearing Boston blazers today. :-)

I think it looks spectacular and I'm so glad you bought it. I think you should try the trousers because if you don't, you'll always wonder about them. Is there some way I can help from the US?

(BTW, your Nordstrom items have been returned! I have been meaning to let you know.)

Oh, and lastly, I was being totally honest when I said I didn't even notice your zit/burn. I was probably too busy lamenting my bad high-humidity hair. :-)

  • Jewell replied 10 years ago

It's a fabulous jacket! You look great! I think it's worth pursuing the matching pants if you can get some advice on sizing either from reviews or fellow fabbers. Clearly the idea of having the complete suit appeals to you or you wouldn't have asked the SA ;-)

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

Wow Suz. That jacket is AMAZING on you! And I just know it's even better IRL. I'm clapping my hands 'cause I'm so darned happy for you :)

Now to the pants question...it's a tough one because we know that sizing can be iffy these days, especially in pants. That being said, if you're able to order them from a reliable source that isn't going to charge you an arm and a leg for delivery and returns should they not work out, I would be very tempted to give them a try because this has the potential to be YOUR HEWI suit.

  • rachylou replied 10 years ago

    Fantastic fit, Suz! Fantastic fit.

  • Joy replied 10 years ago

Suz, the jacket has me swooning, it fits you so well. I want one like it although don't know that I can justify the price. How does the sizing run compared to the chart? Did you get a size 4.
About the trousers, I would probably pass since they look ankle length and wool, even light wool, may be too warm in mid summer to wear with sandals. I wonder if they would work tucked into boots though.

  • LoriFLA replied 10 years ago

The jacket is gorgeous. Your sneaker outfit with the jacket is fab.

The ideal scenario in my opinion would be to order the trousers and try them.  You would have a beautiful suit.

  • Karie replied 10 years ago

I saw the jacket in person, and it is SPECTACULAR! It looks stunning on you.

I would try the pants because I would always wonder about it if I didn't. If I can assist in any way with ordering/shipping/whatever, let me know.

Blemish? What blemish? All I saw was your amazing smile!

  • replied 10 years ago

WOW! The fit on that blazer is spectacular. You will love it for years and years! Boo on the SA who told you there were no pants. If it wouldn't cause your credit card to cough up a lung, I'd tell you to order about 4 sizes of the pants to try on and then just make one return. *sigh*  What to do?!

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Joy, how did you guess? It is indeed a size 4. I usually take a 0 or 2 in US sizes. Viva also sized up.

Janet, THANK YOU for doing those returns for me! That is almost half the cost of the jacket right there! :)

And thanks also for offering the help with the travelling pants. I am going to think some more and maybe call them about sizing.

Thanks everyone else for helping me celebrate. It really is a fantastic piece of clothing. So beautifully made.

ETA - thank you, also, Karie!! And you are too sweet. My smile is also a little the worse for wear from the dental surgery and the staining mouthwash they had me use. argh!!!!!

Claire, I'm seriously considering what you said!

  • Mo replied 10 years ago

I would try the pants.  Especially if you can get some help across the border.  Does this mean you did not buy the taupe suit??

  • viva replied 10 years ago

Love it on you, Suz! Although you know that, because it was this image -- of you looking amazing in this blazer -- that sent me to the rack. ETA: Your exquisite shoulders and posture!!! Just have to say.

I just love this jacket, and Joy I would encourage you to try it. It's an investment but it feels wonderful on. I really did not want to take mine off yesterday. I worked in it all day and only took it off when I starting cooking in the evening. It's fantastic. Like Suz, I did size up. I usually take a 6 (sometimes a 4) in jackets, and I bought an 8.

I'm also on the fence with the pants. Body type and style concerns and I also thought about the the ankle length, Joy. Just not sure.

Suz, you look fantastic! Can't wait to see the jacket's next time out -- it's very versatile, so I have no idea what to expect, except that I know it will be beautifully stylish.

  • Sharon replied 10 years ago

What a beautiful jacket! It looks beautiful on you. I think a classic piece in a quality fabric that looks that good is worth every cent. I vote to try and get the pants - as TC says, you have been looking for a suit and this would be perfect.

  • BethL replied 10 years ago

Suz, that jacket is beautiful! I wish I could have stuck around to see it in person, but my knee, it was groaning. ;) Anyway, I love, love, love it. I also love how you've styled it here. I think that is truly the mark of a great piece of clothing when you can style a dressy piece casually like you've done here, and it looks fantastic. You'll have so many options with it.

I think you should try the pants. Now that I've seen you model some clothing (okay, yes, mostly jackets, but still...), I think the style of these pants would really flatter your figure.

And blemish? What blemish? I only saw your beautiful self.

  • catgirl replied 10 years ago

This is THE JACKET.  I am just blown away.  it was made for you (and Viva!).

  • texstyle replied 10 years ago

Beautiful Suz - what perfection!  I would probably give the pants a try - maybe you can work some magic on the telephone with the SA in the U.S. to see if they might help out with shipping costs (since their other SA told you the wrong information).

I always use essential orange oil on minor breakouts - usually they are gone in 1-2 days without any irritation.

  • MsMaven replied 10 years ago

That is the best-looking and best-fitting tuxedo jacket that I have ever seen.  From my experience with more expensive jackets, you will be wearing this for at least a dozen years or more.

    Perfect for you.

  • AviaMariah replied 10 years ago

As hard as you've worked to find the perfect jacket and the perfect suit I think you will kick yourself if you pass up the opportunity to try the pants.  Just think, if these are "the pants" to make "the suit" it will be worth the effort!

  • Gigi replied 10 years ago

Suz, this jacket is so beautiful on you! And since it's black and a very classic cut, you'll get lots of use out of it. Sometimes we really do have to sink a chunk of cash into the exactly perfect thing that we will wear for years.

On the pants, all I can suggest is to contact the company and see if you can get actual garment measurements, for starters. Maybe that will rule the trousers out, at which point you can safely forget about them. But if the measurements look like the pants will fit, you will feel better about ordering and possibly having to make a return.

If I lived in Canada I would probably be naked, because I need to return so many clothes!

  • DonnaF replied 10 years ago

The jacket is wonderful!  I noticed the pants are lined -- as they should be at this price point.  The web site did not list their inseam length or width at the bottom.  :( If you will need to fiddle with the length, it will add to the ultimate cost, esp. since they are lined.  But if it were me, I think I would want to know if the pants fit. . .

  • E replied 10 years ago

OMG, that jacket! It is so perfect and beautiful on you, and I'm just thrilled that you found it & were able to buy it. :D You'll be able to reach for it for years & years! *happy dance* (My favourite jackets have princess seaming too. And my favourite dress. And woven blouses that fit me best. Why doesn't everything have princess seaming?!)

I don't know about the trousers: if you loved them & they made your HEWI suit, that'd be fabulous. But with the crossborder complications, I'd e-mail/call the company first & get at least the inseam & rise measurements so you have a general idea of if they'll fit correctly or not. I'm able to rule out a lot of trousers that way, especially if I want them full length. But if the free shipping & returns for over $300 applies internationally, just get at least 2 sizes to try on and you should be good!

  • Diana replied 10 years ago

I think you should call and get the measurements for the pants.  Yes, they look ankle length on the model but maybe she is really tall, and trousers tend to have some seam allowance that you can let out (make sure you ask them about this).  You'll always wonder if you dont' give it a try, right?

  • deb replied 10 years ago

Beautiful jacket and the length is perfect. It will be a workhorse.

  • Thistle replied 10 years ago

Wow, that jacket is amazing on you!  PPP totally paid off, and there is your jacket.  It truly is perfect for you.

As for the trousers, I know you can get some US help in your quest for them. I would call for measurements, and check and see if there is seam allowance should you need to let them down. I honestly think you should at least look into the measurements etc. as that is just an e-mail. You will always wonder if you don't. (At least I would!)

  • K. Period. replied 10 years ago

I vote order the pants.  I know how long your suit has been your HEWI.  I always find the jackets to be the harder half of the suit.  Trousers can be taken in and let out and adjusted in so many ways and so many places, they are much easier to customize.  But jackets? No way. Shoulders. Sleeves. Those are hard.  If this jacket is perfect for you, you should see if it will be part of the perfect suit.

Order the trousers then just make up your mind before they arrive that you are going to take them to a tailor for adjustment.  If they arrive and they fit perfectly, then you are done.  If not, you are already reconciled to and planning on seeing what a tailor can do with them.

  • kellygirl replied 10 years ago

I can offer no guidance on the suit business but had to chime in and say that the jacket is beyond fab! It looks like it was tailored made for you!

  • Joy replied 10 years ago

Thinking about the pants some more, I think you need more information than the site gives, like how long they actually are in different sizes, bottom width and if there is any hem that can be let out.  Then there's the facts that you look very fetching in ankle pants, the pants match the jacket, and they are about have the cost of the jacket.  As wise Karie says, you may always wonder if you don't try them.  Then there's always the possibility of making them winter shorts ;)

  • Ornella replied 10 years ago

So, this is it. Worth the wait , for you and for us to finally see in ON you ;-)

Thumbs up for the pants. You're so happy with the jacket, the chance the pants might work means it will eat you up if you don't at least try the pants.

  • replied 10 years ago

The jacket IS amazing and I like the styling you've done.  Can you hold off on the trousers until you have a US trip planned?  Maybe you could have them ordered into a store to try.  I like the idea of the suit for you in this since it's something you've been wanting.

  • Parsley replied 10 years ago

Gorgeous jacket, Suz! It's so wonderful to find something that you've searched for and been so patient finding the perfect one!
You've got to get the pants! Even if you have to do some alterations to get the perfect fit they'll be worth it to complete your suit. You know they'll be longer than ankle length on you, although honestly would they be a deal breaker even if they were?

I'm so happy that your patience paid off and you have your superb jacket! You will enjoy it for years, I feel sure.

  • amiable replied 10 years ago

Wow - LOVE the jacket - and congratulations on finding the perfect one!

I haven't read all the comments, so I'm sure it's been said, but just in case it hasn't - I'd be glad to be a middle shipper for you.  (If it would benefit you at all, that is).  I don't have a Reiss nearby, so it would have to be shipped twice, which might negate the benefits.

  • carter replied 10 years ago

The jacket is killer. I would love for the pants to work for you so you can cross the PERFECT suit off your list. The rise on them looks pretty high. How do you feel about that? Now that I have finally succumbed to lower rise pants, the dress pants I used to love feel off to me. There's not a Reiss store in Atlanta, or I would go try them on and take pics for you. Keep us posted!

  • Sveta replied 10 years ago

I am happy you love the jacket today, Suz - nothing to cure the buyer remorse like a good night sleep :-)
You know what I think of it so I will not repeat myself <wink>

Now about the trousers: have you decided that you need 2 suits now? Becasue ordering online from US without even trying on this brand is going to be a hassle and quite possible an extra expense. You have your suit now and you have a beautiful navy tux jacket - do you really need those pants? Will you have enough occasions for 2 suits in your life? I know you cna mix and match but you already have trousers to mix and match with.
< this was my voice of reason, you can ignore it if you wish >

Thanks for posting the link to the jacket: I feel much better now. I was kicking myself that I did not try it on in the store just to see if it is a good fit for me but I see now that my size was not available anyway...

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

Killer to the power of Killer

Oh, Suz. I can't tell you how thrilled I am that you and Viva bought this dressy, crisp, modern and impeccably made beauty. It was SO worth the price. I'm honoured to have been part of the decision making process.

(It's even better in person because you can see the tuxedo tailoring down the centre front).

(Don't forget how well the Club Monaco grey blazer fit you too).

I vote leave the trousers. You just bought the most perfect taupe suit in the world. You are suit sorted. xo

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

Oh yes. And go Team Reiss. One of my London faves along with L.K Bennett.

  • Janet replied 10 years ago

Oh gosh, in the spectacularness of the blazer, I almost forgot Suz's taupe suit! She still has not shared that with the group… tsk tsk… ;-)

  • Isabel replied 10 years ago

But the jacket, oh the jacket.  It really is just an amazing piece of clothing. And to find it right off the rack and have it fit in such perfection is a dream.  You look amazing, Suz.

  • Marmee replied 10 years ago

Beautiful and very versatile! I really like how you styled it.

  • AviaMariah replied 10 years ago

Do share the suit!  That changes everything and I say leave the blue trousers unless you want two suits (maybe one for winter one for spring/summer?).

  • Dee replied 10 years ago

Gorgeous jacket! It fits you so well and looks amazing. The pants sound like a tougher decision, especially if the sizing is different than usual. I'd be nervous about having to order multiple sizes, but if it is THE suit it might be worth it. But first I want to see your taupe suit too!

  • goldenpig replied 10 years ago

Great jacket! I vote get the pants! It's worth it to have your perfect suit!

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Thank you all, so much! So glad it meets the approval of the wise forum! And Angie, thank you especially for your assistance.

I hear you on the trousers. I will model the suit so all can see. I have to say, I am still tempted by the blue trousers because I do not own a pair of navy trousers at all and oh, how I would love a pair.

And the cut is completely different than those on the taupe suit. I hope to model that soon -- it might not be for a few days, however, due to work commitments. But I will do my best.

Angie, I am fully committed to that Club Monaco jacket, too. At least when my credit card recovers! I think a grey blazer would be a real workhorse for me as well. I might just watch it for sales. I suspect it may go on special even in my size, since that colour will not be super-popular (I predict.) And now that I have a couple of jackets, I don't need to pounce too quickly.

Sveta, you are so right. Sveta's referring to a case of buyer's remorse I confessed to her and Viva -- I had tried on the jacket yesterday and took pics and for some reason wasn't happy with what I saw (although I loved what I FELT.) Anyway -- all I needed was sleep to get that sorted out!

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Oh - and Mr. Suz was completely delighted with the jacket. :)

  • Raisin replied 10 years ago

The jacket IS perfect. That was a great buy!

Do you often wear full suits?  I don't know if you'd feel like you get as much use from the pants as the jacket.  I suppose they could be worn as separates though.  But if you need  a really great suit for work or something, it probably would make a perfect pair!

  • replied 10 years ago

Lovely jacket, Suz! Great find, and well worth the wait.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Raisin, I don't often wear suits because I until the other day I didn't own a suit!!

I WOULD often wear a suit for my appearances. It's pretty much exactly what I need. I now have one (in taupe, soon to be modelled). But navy is my other main neutral. And they could be mixed and matched because the styles are quite different.

I would also (happily) wear a suit for going out to dinner with Mr. Suz. He completely understands my  androgynous style gene and would not bat an eyelash if I chose that over a dress.

I would wear a suit when I travel -- theatre, dinner, galleries, and the like.

I would wear a suit when I attend business meetings in the city. Rare -- and absolutely not required -- but again -- a suit for me is probably like sweatpants for some other people. It's my "happy clothing."

Having said that, I would NOT wear a suit for my work-at-home life. I tend to wear jeans and knits in winter for that role, and shorts plus woven tops in summer. So it's not an item or combination that would get daily or even weekly wear in my life.

On the other hand, when I needed it, it would be there. Know what I mean? And I would certainly wear the pieces broken up. Navy pants with a sweater or a casual jacket? That's a no brainer.

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

    (Yay, Mr. Suz).

Order the matching trousers to satisfy your curiosity more than anything else. It's worth the exercise. And keep that grey CM blazer on your radar.

Pictures can be deceiving Sweet Suz - don't worry your pretty little head about it. xo

  • pil replied 10 years ago

I wish I would have seen the jacket on you and Viva in person, but my keister was planted at All Saints. It is gorgeous in the pictures and I think it looks better on you than the model. The pieces at Reiss really were exquisite.

The suit is spectacular on you - and I have the photos to prove it :)

  • CocoLion replied 10 years ago

I only have my phone but from what I can see this is THE perfect jacket. I love the white touches in this outfit. You've been wanting a suit, I say go for it. I think pants are easier to alter than jackets.

  • merwoman replied 10 years ago

    Perfection.

I vote give the pants a go - navy is so versatile.

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

Definitely scratch the itch and order the pants just so you don't have to wonder. The jacket is just wonderful on you. One of those pieces that just embodies the person (if I may be so bold as we have not yet met!). I will "patiently" wait for the suit reveal!

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Shevia, that's exactly it. I put it on and felt immediately like "me." It was all I could do not to scrunch the sleeves (as I've done here) and start styling it my way....

So even when I got hit by a wave of temporary worry about it yesterday, I wasn't really worried. Because I'd had the "this is me" feeling when putting it on.

    Viva felt the same thing.

I am so grateful to her. I left it -- we were going to come back after a little while to consider (at Angie's suggestion). But then Viva wanted to try hers just once more...she did...and then we went to find Angie, because we were just both so taken with these jackets all over again.

  • crazyone replied 10 years ago

I know for a fact that you look amazing in this jacket, because I was there when you tried it on :)  So glad that you and Viva went back to get them when you had a chance!

The stuff at Reiss was very beautiful and seemed to be very well made.  I'll have to check them out again...when I have a better income :-)

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Yes, C1 -- it is crazy expensive. But so well made.

In the meantime, you can rely on the Rack for Theory!! :)

  • Lyn D. replied 10 years ago

    FANTABULOUS Suz :) :)
IGWYM about that brief twinge of 'did I spend X$?'  BUT- when it is PPPP you know that you will forever be so happy that you bought, and the $value fades quicker than the mistake of poorly chosen multiples adding to the same amount do!

  • Aubergine replied 10 years ago

Yay! I loved that jacket on Viva and it looks equally perfect on you! I'm also a vote for ordering the pants just to see, if nothing else.

  • Ariadne replied 10 years ago

I am SO happy you found your suit and your jacket!!!!!!

  • crazyone replied 10 years ago

BTW, Suz, add me to the chorus of people who took no notice of your pimple!  More than anything else, I was struck by your amazingly good posture!  I feel so slouchy in comparison ;-)

  • Jeanie replied 10 years ago

Love, love that jacket!!!  I saw it online the other day and was drooling.  So glad you and Viva have that little lovely in your closet.  Yes, to the pants for all the reasons you expressed.  You will kick yourself if you don't at least try them.

  • Neel replied 10 years ago

That jacket is a brilliant find!! Perfect on you ... And yay for the pants :)

I love the way you have styled the jacket the most! Marking this as favorite to copy ;)

  • Golden replied 10 years ago

Gorgeous jacket, it looks as if it were made for you! I would talk to the store and get advice on the fit and try the pants, then you would have a beautiful suit!!! Good luck

  • Astrid replied 10 years ago

It's the perfect jacket for you! I think this is going to be money well spent. I think I would definitely try the pants too.

  • Jjsloane replied 10 years ago

What Diana said. Try the pants, but keep your expectations at a medium and be prepared to pay for your curiosity. It would make a fantastic suit if it works, but if not the jacket is stunning perfection and has great memories associated with it.

BTW I think we all have some imperfections we were self conscious about in our in person meetings. I saw only your gorgeous eyes.

  • lyn67 replied 10 years ago

Oh, so here it is THE jacket! Plonk! best fit and color ever!(I like the very dark navy). I am not a suit person and never like matchy matchy for me, so I wouldn't order the trosers for myself, but I know you could get your mileage out of a second suit, too-so then, I say go for it!

  • kkards replied 10 years ago

love the jacket, its fab! as for the pants, i say try, but don't keep unless they are perfect.

  • Inge replied 10 years ago

Very relieved to hear that little "slap" made all concerns disappear :-)

Oh Suz, could this blazer be anymore perfect for you!! The fit is divine, the colour and cut  (so crisp and clean) are gorgeous, and I know from experience that the quality of Reiss blazers is impeccable. It truly has your name written all over it, and agree that it was worth the investment. You will want to wear this all the time, I think.

And yes! I knew it, you bought the taupe suit:-) Can't wait to see you model it for us too. What fantastic loot you brought home from Boston, WOW.

About the Reiss trousers: if you can't stop thinking about them, and you feel you could use a pair of dressy ink blue trousers, then it's worth exploring further.

  • shedev replied 10 years ago

The jacket is lovely. I'd try the pants.

  • Freckles replied 10 years ago

Absolutely stunning, I'm so happy you found such a fab jacket for yourself.

    Re the trousers...
If it were myself I would buy them but I don't wear jeans and would wear them in my daily life.  You already have a suit (can't wait to see) and these clothes do fit into one of your capsules although not in daily rotation.  I think that even they might make another awesome suit cpw has to factor into it.  Do you get bored with your pants as easily as other items in your wardrobe?

  • Karie replied 10 years ago

Just coming back to say - and I haven't read all the comments so forgive me if it's been said already - mix and match! Could you mix and match the Reiss pants with the Tahari blazer? Oh, the outfit possibilities...

Not that I'm an enabler or anything ;)

  • Alassë replied 10 years ago

I'd vote try the pants as well, if duties/shipping permit. I'm happy that you found the jacket to rule them all!

  • Phatgranny replied 10 years ago

Suz, this jacket is exquisite and a perfect fit.  Beautiful.  I feel you should go for the pants, simply to have such a gorgeous suit.  I agree with whomever said the jacket is the hard part and that pants are a much simpler alteration if necessary.  Go for it!  The meet-up in Boston looked so fun and how fun for you to come home with such a prize!  I love shopping trips that yield such magnificent bounty!

  • greenglove replied 10 years ago

    Suz,
    I would order the trousers.
If you do not you will likely be thinking about them and they may no longer be available. Especially since suits are your happy clothes.
I missed the taupe suit purchase- so sad. Must have been after I left.
You are gorgeous in person and I am so happy that I got to meet you and be almost Moto twins.

  • Elizabeth P replied 10 years ago

Suz, this jacket is so awesome!  I'm thrilled you finally found one.

Add me to the growing list of those who think you need the trousers as well.  Or at least, need to try them.  You will really kick yourself a month or so from now, if you don't.  Having two suits will fit that travel wardrobe so well, esp if there is any mixing and matching to be done.

  • JenA replied 10 years ago

    Suz,
You are so beautiful and sweet that I never noticed any blemish! And I sat right next you.

That jacket is incredible. I love it on you.  Now that I see it with your clothes, it is so YOU. I think you might want to get the pants. You could always wear them with other things and mix it up.

    Enjoy!
    Jen

  • Scarlet replied 10 years ago

Stunning!!! For The Jacket you have got to try the trousers despite the international ordering hastle. How great would it be if they worked out.

  • Beth Ann replied 10 years ago

I'm so very late to the party, but I'm wearing my best dancing shoes because this makes me so happy!  The cut and color are rich and so gorgeous on you.  This will be a very versatile piece and not one quick to go out of style.
