WIW: Garden Party...trying to channel Angie

Garden party event today. This is an annual event, and the dress code calls for white.

Usually I try to wear something floaty or at least on the feminine side. This year I expected to wear my new blue and white Cleo dress.

But the weather didn't cooperate. It is Seattle grey and cold. Time to layer up!

So I went with Angie's blog formula: white jeans, boyish shirt tucked in and belted, and a bright jacket.

My shirt is looser and less crisp (it's linen); I needed a camisole underneath both to bookend the white and because I was chilly, and I ended up with wedge sandals rather than pumps because I was going to be standing in the wet grass.

I'm not too thrilled with the combo of the sandals and the jacket, but what can you do? Live and learn, I guess! At least I was warm. Thank goodness for white jeans! If I lived in Seattle or London I would own six pairs!

I love the outfit Suz! I think the sandals look fine although pumps would have been just a little dressier!

  • christieanne replied 11 years ago

Wow - bright jacket and white jeans with blue shirt. Looks fantastic. It would have been hard to wear pumps on grass so shoe is a practical choice. An animal print flat might work for next time if you have one? Lovely!

I like the sandals, jacket and shirt. You look perfect for this event. My only suggestion would be for a lighter belt. Like maybe beige or taupe which reads as a neutral, goes with many things, and isn't as bright as white. I purchased a few white belts last summer and found that cream/beige/taupe was better, more versatile. I got a great one at Target (slim profile) in leather for only $12.99. Actually I got 2 of them.

You look wonderful in this, Suz! I love the bright jacket and boyish shirt with the white jeans.

Do you have a photo of what you wore last year?

Wow! Your outfit (and you) look beautiful! And even though this is fabulous as is, I have to agree with Denise (she has an amazing eye doesn't she!?!) that a lighter belt would make it just a smidge more perfect. The glowing jewel tone jacket against the white is just amazing. The neutral would anchor it nicely.

How gorgeous you look in these lilacs and periwinkles. Wait, is that the jacket from *the* pink silk suit? If so, it's showing up more purple-y pink today. Lovely outfit! Your black and white Docs would have been great with this, but I suppose you didn't want to muddy them!

This is a winning combination! Hope you had a wonderful time!

Fabulous outfit and quick thinking on your part due to the weather. This shows that your closet is starting to come together Suz - you were able to think on your feet and grab and look very put together! I'm beginning to see the wisdom of white jeans. I love the colour combination of your shirt and the fuchsia jacket. Like Denise, I think a lighter belt would look fantastic.

Wonderfully inspired, Suz! I like this high style, but casual look. I like the wide belt and the pop of color in the jacket. The wedges are fine, and footwear needs to, well, function. Do you have any Cons? Those would work in these situations, and might keep your foot a little warmer.

To me, the scrunched sleeves and open collar make this look really sing -- relaxed and nonchalantly fab!

This is very nice! I love the colors of the shirt and the jacket, and the sandals look fine to me.

I love this outfit, especially the sandals. What is throwing you off about the sandals with the jacket? It looks great to me...maybe you are thinking it's seasonally confused? It doesn't read that way to me, but I'm from the land of birkies in the winter...(-:

I think it's a good look but agree with others about possibly a lighter colored belt.

  • Kiwichik replied 11 years ago

You look fab. You really rock a pair of white jeans and the colours of the shirt & jacket look great on you. Would love to see this again with a belt that echoes the colour of your sandals.

  • Jaime replied 11 years ago

Great taking inspiration and making it yours! I agree you might try a lighter belt but really you look great as is.

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

You wear this look flawlessly well, Suz! Kind of prefer it sans the blazer. A big fat 10! I like the darker belt actually.

(Humbled to have inspired your outfit).

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

Thank you all; you're way too kind. I wasn't satisfied with this look and did not feel fab. I wanted to take pics to try to figure out why. And it really was helpful to do so. I think part of the reason Angie's look worked so well was its super polish - it was boyish, but very crisp. The softness of my linen shirt along with the casualness of the sandals spoiled this one for me. And the jacket isn't the right texture, either.

Denise, you really DO have a great eye and I think a lighter belt might have been nice here for sure. (I don't own one, but can imagine one landing in my shopping cart very soon, LOL!).

I will say, however, that this one actually DOES echo the shoe IRL. It is a medium blue grey suede, which is almost exactly what the top part of the sandal is. The sandal's grey is admittedly lighter (and for some reason looks even lighter in the photo), but is also suede. So there is a textural echo as well as the colour that just doesn't show in the photo. Interesting.

Claire, this is indeed THE fuchsia suit jacket. As predicted, I have already worn the top four times, so CPW for this baby is going down fast! The jacket's on its second outing.

And I agree the Docs would have worked. I thought of wearing them but worried it might be muddy, plus the heel, even though substantial, might not have been great for standing on uneven ground.

Ali - I DO have a photo of last year's outfit: It's in this thread: http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....ump-on-the

Quite a difference, as you can see!

I think a couple of things bothered me about this year's:

    1. The jacket. It's not nipped in at the waist. It's quite straight and boyish, and also longer than most jackets I'm used to wearing. I'm not that comfortable in it, despite its wonderfully scrunchable sleeves.

2/ I'm especially not comfortable with the contrast in textures between this lightweight silk jacket and the heavier denim.

    3. Most of all, the sandals. They are just TOO casual for the jacket. I didn't really see it until I saw the pic. They were the best thing I had in my closet given the circumstances, but they were far from ideal. Fortunately they are super comfortable so at least I wasn't in pain!

    4. Ultimately, even though most people don't really dress up for this (the overall vibe is sort of professorial boho) I would have felt better in a dress than jeans. I was really glad to have covered legs - what I wore was weather appropriate. But it just didn't feel festive in the right way for me. I wanted something more feminine.

So - lesson learned! Thank you for humouring me!

  • Jonesy replied 11 years ago

I'm sorry you felt less than fab, because I think you look great! I love how your colors echo spring flowers in bloom right now (lilacs and peonies come to mind), and you look fab in the white denim!

  • ManidipaM replied 11 years ago

White jeans, sturdy but suede sandals and silk jacket --- can't get much better with insouciant bohoness than that, Suz!

Like so many others, I think you look great. If you didn't feel appropriate to the occasion, though, my sympathies --- but I hope this outfit gets a repeat outing, or a few, with tweaks to discomfort zones. FWIW, the sandals and jacket work together for me because of the jacket being a lighter, more feminine fabric and colour, and I actually love the hip contrast of denim with shantung.

  • Scarlet replied 11 years ago

I actually like the idea of sandals with the white jeans and sharp blazer. I do agree with your assessment about the boyish shape of the jacket and the contrast between the texture of the jacket and the shirt. I think with a little tweaking this is a great formula for you. I also like the idea of a lighter belt, but I can believe in real life that the color reads differently.

  • fashionista replied 11 years ago

Lovely outfit. Loved your #2 look without the jacket. And yes those shoes are a little too casual for the #1 look with the blazer.

  • Deborah replied 11 years ago

Suz Tnis looks great and really suits you. I like the outfit without the jacket. With the jacket I would prefer different shoes. Maybe a ballet flat or a bootie/shootie or even a flat oxford.

  • Mona replied 11 years ago

Love the pink jacket with white jeans. You must have looked the most fabulously dressed woman at the party.

  • krishnidoux replied 11 years ago

Lovely outfit! You look so good in it. The purple jacket is genius.
And so are the sandals with it! It looks great together! Very cool.
I understand your concern about the blazer's waist. But I assure you that your silhouette here is great with the blazer as is, because it produces a long lean line. I also understand your feeling of not so fab due to constraints on clothing such as the grass. This has often launched me into a "Nothing to wear!!!" moment, when I had carefully planned my outfit in advance but suddenly realize a detail such as standing on grass, or weather turning, etc. It's frustrating when it happens. Fortunately you had the wedge sandals to stand tall over the elements. I assure you they looked very cool with the blazer, not out of sync.
