WIW: Hoodie under blazer

Today's outing is lunch with a friend who always dresses a lot more casually than me. I thought this might be a good time to try the hoodie under a blazer. You can't really see it in the photo but the cashmere hoodie has a really nice waffle texture to it. I thought it played well against the jacquard.

Jacket: Zara
Cashmere hoodie and cami: courtesy our own Mo.
Jeans: J. Crew toothpick, sized up for a bit of ease.
Booties: SE Petty.

I turned up my nose when reading about layering a jacket over a hoodie yesterday, but I was too quick to judge. You make it look elegant!

  • MsMary replied 10 years ago

Gah!  Love!!  You sassy thing, you!  :)

And may I just say it is so much fun to see people on the forum take Angie's suggestions and run with them, practically in real time!

  • El Cee replied 10 years ago

I think you've found a key to making this look sophisticated... a luxe hoodie with a textural jacket. You look great!

  • replied 10 years ago

Echoing Amy's words. You look great. It probably is something I still wouldn't wear for my own style, but wow, you have made it look elegant!

  • texstyle replied 10 years ago

I think you've pulled this off perfectly Suz - I was not on board with this idea but seeing it in action on you makes it look very chic!

  • Tanya replied 10 years ago

I love the look Suz, I think you pulled it off brilliantly.  I am actually wearing  a hoodie under a blazer today as well, will try to post a photo later.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Tanya - so wonderful to see you post! I would love to see your version!!

I didn't think I would like it, either, until I saw a few of Angie's examples. And yes, it helps that this particular hoodie is like a luxury sweater, LOL. I also think the creamy off-white works really well with the mid-tone blue.

Mary K, in the past few months, I've finally realized that I have enough to work with in my closet so that I can often put Angie's suggestions into action, and it's the most fun I've had in a long time! ;)

  • amiable replied 10 years ago

    Love it!

And I'm at a similar place in my closet too - most of what Angie posts, I have the pieces to try out (in one form or another).  It's a ton of fun!

  • TraceyLiz65 replied 10 years ago

Like MaryK, I really enjoy seeing the forum members take the idea and run with it!  Suz, you really nailed this look and the booties are fabulous!

  • Glory replied 10 years ago

Suz you are rocking that style. You have a knack for singling out a wonderful jacket and pairing it up. Have a fun lunch.

  • Amy replied 10 years ago

Suz and amiable--I want to achieve that status someday. I'm amazed at how quickly you can put trendy ways of wearing things into action!

  • AnnieMouse replied 10 years ago

I love this idea, and it looks so good on you, Suz!

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

Well isn't your closet full of such wonderful things that you can pull an Angie formula right out of it!!!

I love the way the petty's pull out of the light color of the hoodie and "fuse" the outfit together.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Shannon, I am all about "fusion" this week. My big adventure in the next few months is figuring out ways to do this throughout the winter. Unfortunately, with my light hair and short legs, it is tricky. Here, I've sacrificed a long leg line for fusion. If I go all dark, I sacrifice cohesion and harmony with my natural colouring for the leg line. SHEESH! Oh well -- that is a subject for another post.

  • kellygirl replied 10 years ago

Looking good, Suz. You make even hoodies look polished and modern. How DO you do that?! Love it.

  • Mona replied 10 years ago

Great interpetation of Angie's idea. YLF!

  • viva replied 10 years ago

    Love it! Looks fantastic.

  • kkards replied 10 years ago

    is that jacket quilted?
love this look. i'm going to pull out my cashmere hoodie and try this.

  • Alassë replied 10 years ago

Like Amy, I was turned off by the idea of layering a hoodie with a blazer, but you execute it perfectly, Suz!
And may I say that it is a pleasure to follow your style. As soon as Angie posts a new formula, you try it and look fabulous!

  • replied 10 years ago

I still don't think I'd ever do this but you look really good.

  • Thistle replied 10 years ago

Wow!  terrific interpretation of Angie's formula. You keep it classy and sassy but still casual and fun. Fab!

  • replied 10 years ago

Love this! I need to get a hoodie. I love seeing your Pettys now I have a pair. I am going to be going through the forum looking for inspiration.

  • Eliza replied 10 years ago

Signature Suz, with a hint of the unexpected.  That is one classy hoodie!  YLF.

  • Vickie KY replied 10 years ago

Your version really works. I love seeing your posts and how you put things together. You are one that I always try to look at.

  • Scarlet replied 10 years ago

    YES! Love this.

  • Beth Ann replied 10 years ago

Love it!  The posh hoodie helps, of course, since it brings the look "uptown."  I tried this, but my one hoodie is a casual stripe, and the hood, draped over a collar, gets stuck in my hair and looks decidedly too small to fit my head.

    You are amazing!

  • Parsley replied 10 years ago

    Whoa!
I was pretty sceptical of this look, but you have pulled it off beautifully, Suz!The luxe hoodie makes all the difference! Love it!

  • Mrs Moo replied 10 years ago

Suz, I totally love this. You've really managed to elevate it to far more elegant than just a hoodie and jacket. I am thrilled to see more members trying this and I'm sure you'll inspire more to give it a go in showing how it can be way more than just casual.

  • Joy replied 10 years ago

More love for your interpretation of Angie's post.  Now I'm even thinking maybe there is hope that a hoodie could be worn in an age appropriate way.

  • nancylee replied 10 years ago

So perfect and cute!  Nice interpretation, Suz.

  • pil replied 10 years ago

Suz, you put on a hoodie/blazer clinic :) Super!

  • Inge replied 10 years ago

Yes! The cream is beautiful with your blue blazer, Suz. And the hoodie is exactly the type of refined sweater I'm looking for to sport this formula myself. I love the juxtaposition of the more casual hoodie with the dressy vibe of the textured blazer (it's a fab one), and then the pattern mixing with the belt and booties.

  • jurocha replied 10 years ago

As @Amy, I turned up my nose when reading about layering a hoodie under a blazer. I accept hoodies in men - there's an irish/bad boy vibe to men layering hoodies under leather bombers - but I find women wearing then... hm... most of the times... frumpy.

Again as @Amy, I might just be wrong. Your white and blue combination @Suz... it feels not only elegant, but also modern/edgy. I liked it a lot!

  • catgirl replied 10 years ago

Am so desperate to wear this combination - all of you are killing me with these looks!

  • Mo replied 10 years ago

Ooh, nicely done!  The waffle weave (that I know exactly what you're talking about ;) ) is a great textural contrast to this jacket!
I had less success when I tried this look a few years ago with the hoodie. http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....nspiration Maybe I had not enough contrast of fabric with my cotton and linen blazers.  So happy to see it is thriving in your closet!!

  • Michelle replied 10 years ago

What a nice combo of casual and dressy! Can't wait to find the perfect hoodie to try this myself.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Thanks, all! This was way more fun to wear than I expected!

Mo, I actually like that outfit of yours (the colours are great on you and you have inspired me to try this with grey). But Angie's comments were interesting. Without thinking about it today I simply pulled the waist cord out of the hoodie and stuffed it in a drawer. It had bugged me when I had worn it before and I decided -- why live with something that doesn't need to be in there? If I ever want it back I can always thread it through the casing. So...voila -- one problem eliminated. And this jacket is a bit longer than yours so that difficulty was dealt with, too.

I did try it with a few other jackets -- including the Lanai and my AT navy jacket -- and neither of those looked good with it at all. Proportions were all wonky somehow.

  • rachylou replied 10 years ago

    Really pretty!

  • replied 10 years ago

Oh my goodness! You look gorgeous and very refined in this outfit. I love the blazer (drool, drool) and the way Mo's hoodie picks up the light tones in your python booties. The jeans are wonderful on you. Are these new? I had a friend give me a pair of J.Crew toothpick jeans in my regular size and I could barely button them across my hipbones. So I'm thinking they might run small. (bottom line: I'm validating your decision to size up). I have a very round about way of saying things I'm realizing. I always have to tell a story! :P

  • Sharon replied 10 years ago

This looks great. I liked the looks Angie posted, but I think this is my favourite. Now I want it to be winter so I can play!

  • shemarie replied 10 years ago

First the white jeans outfit and now the hoodie/blazer combo...you are the YLF blog post model!!  So elegant, refined, yet completely comfortable and approachable.  Just wow. :-)

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

You are all way too kind.

I think what made this outfit really fun for me to wear (besides the super soft cashmere!) was unexpected shape of the "collar." I really love detail like that. Yet because I'm usually wearing high necklines I don't get many opportunities to play with it. The zip on the hoodie allowed me to adjust the V "just so" for personal flattery. And then the hood framed the face.

Claire, these jeans do run a bit small I think -- they also differ a lot from fabrication to fabrication. I got them in the early spring. Later, I tried some in ecru in this size and sent them immediately packing. They were giving me the dreaded leg wrinkles from hell -- you know, the kind where you can't tell if they are too loose or too tight -- and I strongly disliked how they looked. They were that soft stretchy stuff. These ones are part poly, part cotton, and have a crisp and smooth feel to them. They skim the leg rather than cling to it. Even my calves.

It's weird...I want to like the Matchsticks but they look awful on me! My goal with these was sort of a cigarette jean look -- not a true skinny. I got ankle length, which on me are just barely long enough to pass muster as regular. They work better with an open vamp shoe or a dark bootie but what the heck. Walk on the wild side...

  • JillG replied 10 years ago

Thank you for a lesson on juxtaposition!  YLF!

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

The cashmere adds the posh and I love the booties with the light sweater. I am convinced!

  • Gracie replied 10 years ago

Suz, you make a hoodie look so polished – you look fab!

I so relate to what you said "Today's outing is lunch with a friend who always dresses a lot more casually than me." ... I always think of my friend(s) style and dress and wear an outfit that she/they will relate to while still keeping to my style. I think it helps with our bonding.

  • Neel replied 10 years ago

Oh my!  Brilliant!  This can't be casual?!  :) ... I think it looks like business in the front and party at the back :D

    Adore this outfit!

  • Robidi replied 10 years ago

Wow, Suz!  I love this interpretation of the look!

  • Freckles replied 10 years ago

Stunning!  This look did not resonate with me while reading Angie's blog but you've blown it out of the ballpark.

  • Jeanie replied 10 years ago

Looks great!  I just scrolled down to ask you if you removed the strings and I read that you did!  I was thinking the string removal may polish the look a bit.

  • Deborah replied 10 years ago

Suz this is a lovely interpretation and it does look sophisticated and elegant.  Just our of interest and to mix it up, I would love to see the 'hood' not so neat (weird coming from me, a neat freak) and maybe scrunched a bit around the neck.  What I like is that you have demonstrated how we can make our own little tweaks and make a look completely ours.

  • lyn67 replied 10 years ago

I have a similar look for my own,  a hoodie under a denim jacket for some casuals, but this is a more sophisticated and absolutely cute outfit! It's so you!:-)

  • Debora replied 10 years ago

I'm a fan! I love the textures in your outfit. Great interpretation, Suz.

  • Windchime replied 10 years ago

Wow! I love how you've interpreted this look. The booties pull it all together perfectly. Classy!

  • Aquamarine replied 10 years ago

This works for you! You show this doesn't have to look sloppy--my particular fear--but chic instead.

  • Lisa replied 10 years ago

Super fun look.  I'm also enjoying the blazer and hoodie formula.  I really like the high contrast here, it makes the jacquard print stand out nicely!
