WIW: Plaid tulle

For my one and only public live book event, I wore the Kate Hewko skirt. This is a minor variation on the outfit I wore to my private launch: booties instead of white sneakers; knit military jacket instead of denim jacket; sparkly tank underneath instead of simple blue wrap top; sparkly earrings.

I wish I could say this event was a triumph, but one of the readers went half an hour over her allotted time. Argh. And we had to sit to read (no sharing mics) so that was a bit uncomfortable. Still, what a privilege to be out in an actual theatre! And I really enjoyed meeting the musician and one of the other readers. :)

Lighting still not great -- I'm doing my best with the new portable mirror but it was rainy today, so...I need to figure out a solution! It's so odd but in this spacious house there is absolutely no appropriate place to put a full length mirror that is not interfered with by the light!

That’s a really fab outfit. Shame you couldn’t do your reading standing, so everyone could see your outfit in its full glory!

    YLF. Love

sorry the event wasn’t exactly what you’d wanted, but YAY for being able to have an event!

The skirt is wonderful! I really like it styled with the military jacket and boots.

YLF! I love the skirt with the booties and jacket! I haven’t yet had occasion to wear mine, but I’m looking forward to it — I’m not fretting it if it takes a while to come out and play because it’s a piece that defies trend and will be worn for years, not an everyday kind of thing.

Im glad you got to enjoy the event mostly — but I can’t believe a reader went so far over time, how clueless! I’ve been involved in events in which presenters have a limited time (in fact I am on the planning committee for one of them), and a moderator always has the ability to gently interrupt when time is up. It’s hard to do sometimes (at times I am the moderator!), but usually it happens because people just don’t realize how much time has passed.

Love and admire your style. This is so chic and fun.

  • CarolS replied 2 years ago

absolutely beautiful! I love how many different ways you can work that skirt. What a great addition to your wardrobe.

  • Angie replied 2 years ago

KILLER to the Power of KILLER

    WOW!!!

You couldn’t have looked more stunning, chic, elegant, and beautiful, sweet Suz! Your hair too!! LOVE :)

I’m rolling my eyes at the selfish reader going over time…..

  • Runcarla replied 2 years ago

Perfect outfit.  Fun and formal simultaneously.  I believe that skirt will become a workhorse!  Interesting prospect for a dressy statement piece, eh!?

  • Diana replied 2 years ago

What a fantastic outfit, Suz! I love everything about it.

And UGH at the person going so far over time! Although that’s really on the moderator, they should have cut them off!

  • Roxanna replied 2 years ago

I love the idea of wearing this to your love book event - so interesting and personal and just the right artistic edge. Sorry about the reader going over - I hate when that happens! - but so nice that you got to do an event live!!

Thanks, all! lozz oz, you made me laugh by expressing the real reason I wanted to stand to read. Not only is it easer to project, but people would have seen the whole outfit! :)

Funny side note -- I must have got 10 compliiments on the little Sandwich jacket (an older item that I usually wear quite casuaully) and no comments on the skirt! Just goes to show you that sitting vs. standing makes a difference to how we are perceived.

Carla,  you're dead right this is a workhorse item, even if it sounds like an oxymoron. I have a few of those, Statement workhorses are maybe my favourite kind of item! Usually for me, they are footwear or jackets/ coats. Once in a while, a top. But in this case, it's the skirt for sure.

CarolS -- it's the rare item that can be easily worn cross-seasonally and dressed way up or way down. Sneakers or casual sandals and a graphic tee and it's fine for a pub lunch with a friend or even a walk on the beach. Stompy boots and turtleneck and tights and leather jacket and it's great for fall. Little jacket and sparkles and it's festive for a night out. I have another version I'm going to wear to a dressy wedding in November, with pumps and a brocade top and tuxedo jacket. And for at home holiday wear, I've got a velvet shirt and/or a lace shirt.

Janet, I know, right? It was embarrassing, actually. The event itself was really strange -- 2 genre novelists (one historical, one romance) and two more literary writers (me and one other). It could conceivably have been fun and funny but for whatever reason (partly the COVID set up) the air in the room felt "dead." Luckily, we were joined by a well known local musician, whose work for me was the highlight. The young musician was the moderator so I think she might have felt awkward about cutting the writer off. It took her the full allotted time to get through her preamble!! And her preamble was awful and didactic. Ugh.

Sally, I didn't get to comment on your thread, but I love your tulle skirt on you! It's a fabulous pattern!

Tanya -- you get it! It's frustrating but I haven't found a solution yet, despite two full length mirrors!

Angie, thank you! It sure did feel good to dress up and wear real clothes to a real event!

  • Bonnie replied 2 years ago

That is a really great outfit. I have the same mirror problem so have had to resort to using a tripod and camera.

  • JAileen replied 2 years ago

I love this on you.  LOVE. This is just so festive, and fun.  I love plaid and military jackets, too, of course.

  • kellygirl replied 2 years ago

    Soo fun! Gorgeous and playful!

  • Jenni NZ replied 2 years ago

Wow Suz you look truly stunning. Yay for events!

  • Jaime replied 2 years ago

You look gorgeous and the skirt was such a good purchase for you. Love your outfit and congratulations!

  • Jonesy replied 2 years ago

Ugh, I know exactly what you mean about dead energy in a room when you are giving a talk! And co-presenters who are oblivious, and moderators who are wimps :)! Tricky business--you have my deepest sympathy. But...you look absolutely fabulous in this skirt and jacket, and it's so fun to imagine it becoming a workhorse for you.

  • lyn67 replied 2 years ago

This was the best outfit for the event, so modern-classic dressed down formal, creative, artsy and flatering on you!! Wow-wow-wow!!:-)

  • RobinF replied 2 years ago

Wow, fabulous outfit! That skirt is the star but the other pieces set it off perfectly.
