WIW: Skirting the Issue

I've been admiring Claire's beautiful full skirt outfits and was hoping to find something similar myself.

On Friday I visited the consignment store where I have a credit and look what I discovered. It's cotton and cotton-lined. And cost me nothing.

Unfortunately, it's too large for me on the waist. I'm going to check into getting it altered, but for now the elastic belt is doing the trick. At least I hope it is.

What do you think? Worth altering and keeping?

I think it looks very beautiful

What a great find! Love how you've paired it with a sleeveless black shirt showcasing your arms (!) and fabulous specs!

  • kellygirl replied 11 years ago

Gorgeous! That's my kind of easy, breezy summer look! You look amazing, Suz!

  • cheryle (Dianthus) replied 11 years ago

I think the skirt is great and well worth the alterations. The colors and pattern are pretty and it looks really nice on you. Nice find Suz.

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

So pretty, Suz! I love this look on you - and it's great with the flats. A little blonde Audrey.

    Definitely worth altering.

I'm so humbled to have inspired you. Actually you look more Audrey/Angie-esque than anything with those great flats! How great that they stay on your feet! I love the sleeveless blouse with collar, too. This silhouette is divine on you, and *that's* a skirt you can straddle the saddle chair in, no? Your belt looks like it's doing a fine job of making the waist fit. I think it's worth pricing an alteration for sure!

BTW, I've been watching the free course from Dressing Your Truth that you linked me to. This print looks very Type 3 to me, is that your dominant type? Just curious. I'm only on the third day of the course, and she hasn't really talked about prints, I'm just guessing because of the angular nature of the design. It strikes me as tribal somehow.

First, thank you, everyone! Angie, I am so flattered that you would compare me to one of my style icons!! I thought of Audrey, too, when I saw the skirt.

I have always adored this silhouette, both in general, and on me in particular. But it isn't always easy to find skirts like this. So I was thrilled when I discovered it and couldn't let its being a bit too big get in the way of keeping. So glad I made the right decision!

And Claire, you're absolutely right, first that I can straddle the saddle chair in this one (which means it will get worn for my work-at-home days) and ALSO that I'm a dominant Type 3 and this is a Type 3 print! I could not and would not wear such a large, vibrant print up close to my face; it would utterly overwhelm me. But I am taking a tip from you and wearing it on the bottom, where it seems to work just fine.

I don't agree with everything Carol Tuttle says or with all her makeovers, but it's a pretty interesting addition to some of the other theories. And did I miss your Kibbe type in that other thread? I know I asked you but can't remember if I ever got a chance to check your answer! In that system I kept coming out a Dramatic Classic; interestingly, some of the recommendations (e.g. angular shapes and some asymmetry in hair, for instance) are very similar for Tuttle's type 3 and my Kibbe type.

That's so cool about your type! I'm only on day three (need to check my email and watch day 4) but before she ever got started and mentioned "elements" I knew that I knew that I knew that I would be water. So that's type 2. I do have aspects of some of the others, but type 2 is definitely dominant for me. I love these tests. Like you, I'm not on board with every assumption she makes, but I can almost always learn something new!

Fun t o see your specs! The full skirt looks so flirty on you, and the belt is doing its thing!

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

Such a pretty skirt on you Suz! I agree with others that it is definitely worth having the waist altered. I love it with the bright flats. And your new specs look fabulous on you!

  • Midwest Girl replied 11 years ago

    So pretty!

  • Scarlet replied 11 years ago

Oh my gosh, what a find. I would definitely keep and alter as necessary.

  • Jem replied 11 years ago

This is one of my favorite outfits on you! (but then again, you always look fab). This skirt was a great find, I love the print! Add me to the "definitely worth altering" chorus.

  • annagybe replied 11 years ago

That print reminds me of something Marni would do.

  • replied 11 years ago

    Love it, cute and stylish

  • Jjsloane replied 11 years ago

I absolutely love this skirt on you. I love this silhouette as well, but can't pull it off usually with my shape. You are built for it.

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

Anna, you're a genius. It's not Marni, but it IS Italian. And probably a knockoff.

I love this quote: “Upbeat,” “joyful,” and “artsy” come to mind when describing Marni, the Italian label that has been designed by Consuelo Castiglioni since it was launched in 1994.

  • citygirldc replied 11 years ago

You know what I'm going to say: LOVE IT!! LOVE IT!! LOVE IT!!!

  • Sarah A replied 11 years ago

ADORE this skirt! The cut is amazing on you, definite find worth having taken in for complete perfection. Love the Marni reference too.

  • sarah replied 11 years ago

I love this on you, Suz! I, too, have been admiring Claire's skirts. I'm so glad you found one! I love it with the red flats. So sweet.

  • Jaime replied 11 years ago

Love the skirt and it is such a perfect silhouette for you. Great find!

  • Janet replied 11 years ago

Great find -- it looks wonderful on you! Definitely worth a little alteration.

  • Isis replied 11 years ago

Love this skirt and the styling with flats! Great summer look!

  • Tanya replied 11 years ago

The skirt is gorgeous and whole outfit stunning. You look amazing Suz.

  • Ana replied 11 years ago

This is beautiful, Suz! I vote alter. I think it looks great with the belt, too.

  • goldenpig replied 11 years ago

Squeee! I love the skirt!!!! Color, pattern, how you paired it with the sleeveless top and red flats and specs! I would rip off this look immediately if I could! You must keep and alter it!

  • ManidipaM replied 11 years ago

Ok, that is GORGEOUS with or without alterations! *And* it works for your saddle chair! Definite Keep and maybe alter (if you think the belt is not something you'd wear always. I love this whole outfit so very much, Suz! Those flats especially.

But above all, that skirt... ::sigh!::

You know, as a Soft Natural (per Kibbe), this should be especially NOT My Type of Print --- being so boldly angular *and* high-contrast --- but I love it and I LOVE how well you wear it. (You would have *had* to be a Dramatic, wouldn't you, to wear black as spectacularly as that with your fair colouring?)

[PS: As to the DYT types, I'm on the same page as Claire --- episode 3 --- but I can't say I have a clue what I am supposed to be! Very confused here so far... :-D Only thing I know for sure I'm not is Type 1 --- airy and fresh and bright and light is definitely not moi!)

  • harmonica replied 11 years ago

    Stunning!

  • Deborah replied 11 years ago

Beautiful and definitely worth the alterations. It made me think of this from Jessica at What I Wore. She repurposed a skirt and this was the finshed result.

I agree the skirt is very in keeping with your style and very Audrey like. Just beautiful.

  • Mona replied 11 years ago

    absolutely stunning!

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

Thank you again, everybody. Glad you like it. I hope it won't cost too much to alter it. It might be a bit tricky because it doesn't have a waistband and does have a zipper and a seam at the low hip. We'll see. The lining's not attached all the way, which should help.

Deborah, that is such a pretty look you posted! My single reservation about this particular skirt (apart from size) is that it won't work with pure white. I wish I had a cream or ivory button down to wear with it!

  • lyn67 replied 11 years ago

OHHHHH this is a stunning print, please keep!!!!! LOVE with the black shirt, but you can purchase a cream one later anytime:-) and what about a grey, or red?

  • Jamie replied 11 years ago

Oh, Suz, please keep this and get it altered! It's too fantastic on you not too!

  • Meredith1953 replied 11 years ago

Adorable outfit on you! Angie is right about you looking like a little blonde Audrey!

  • nancylee replied 11 years ago

I missed commenting on this the other day, Suz, but just had to weigh in now and say how fabulous this skirt looks on you. Please keep and alter.

I love the style direction you are taking. Feminine, retro, modern---and fun!
