WIW: Slouchy Trousers at last

I finally got a chance to wear my new slouchy trousers and I LOVE them. Super comfortable. The fabric is so wonderfully drapey.

I am not sure the outfit was a success, however. The truth is, I didn't really wear the denim jacket for most of the day (I was too warm - out for lunch at a restaurant and then visiting a friend) so in reality, it was just the sweater. In the photos the cowl really seems to overwhelm but it didn't seem that way so much IRL. Hmmm. Anyway, I wore the sweater with a faux semi tuck.

I like the trousers better with these sleeker booties than with my Marcies.

Great trousers, Suz! They look great, and I love them with the sleek booties.

Those trousers do look great on you. You're rig they have wonderful drape. I really like the red sweater, I think the large cowl is kind of nice, it balances out the volume on the bottom, but the jean jacket over top keeps the top half looking slim.

These are great trousers! And everything sounds better described as trousers rather than pants, even in American English.

I like the cowl, but 'm wondering if that is the right belt for that outfit.

These are gorgeous Suz! Just the right drape and weight. Have they been at the tailor? I don't remember which ones these are. I'm sure this outfit looked stellar with just the sweater (and I was just fighting with a cowl and "our" jacket the other day--theoretically it should work, but cowls don't always play well with jackets I'm finding).

Anyway, back to you. The color of the sweater is so rich and beautiful on you, and your booties take everything up several notches! I love it all! Are the trousers black or charcoal? I'm sure you will love them for many years. I am sitting here in an uncomfortable pair of skinny black pants, and believe me, those trousers are looking really good to me right now. Too bad it wouldn't make sense for me to invest in something woolen like that. The luxurious look really suits you Suz!

Well I like the outfit as a whole Suz - of course the colour of the sweater is divine on you and I don't find the cowl overwhelming. It hangs beautifully. The trousers....SUPERB! Love the fit and you have perfect scrunch IMO.

Claire, you're so right. Cowls can be tricky, and "our" jacket isn't always easy to style, period, at least for me. I usually have to wear a scarf with it due to my giraffe neck. Or *something.* In this case I thought the cowl was that something, and as it is removable I could arrange it more or less as I wished. But the edges of the jacket kept poking up showing beneath the cowl IRL. Fortunately, I took the jacket off most of the day so that stopped being a problem! I hate clothes I have to fuss around with, though. It's not time to purge this jacket because it still has a use at other times of the year for me. But I certainly don't reach for it as often as I did last year.

The trousers are black, but the black is a soft, almost charcoal black. They are wool, but a very lightweight wool. I still think probably too warm for your climate.

CF, you might be right about the belt - it might be too light. I could have turned it over and worn it on the black side - it's a fab belt because it is reversible!

Great trousers - pretty cowl sweater - wonderful color on you! I'm not sure if the denim jacket goes with the "winter" style of this outfit as much as I'd like, so leaving it off was probably perfect anyway!

    KILLER

    Minimax!

If you had not shown the red sweater cuffs peaking out from your denim jacket, worn a simple turtleneck, and left off the bracelet - the effect would be more minimal. Does that make sense, Suz? Not *at all* criticizing - just trying to pinpoint the differences because I know you like stuff like that :).

You look more than perfect and very happy. An 11 out of 10!

    This is gorgeous! Well done!

Suz, which trousers are these? I am really struggling to find some tapered pants that work for me and it is going to take the combo of slouchy-taper.

I think they look great. Agree with the more streamlined footwear--great combo. Notwithstanding my oxford rant about wearing regular wide-ish trouser pants, I would like to combine oxfords with a tapered leg line, but not jeans.

  • Amy replied 11 years ago

    Wonderful!

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

Makes total sense, Angie, and I *do* like stuff like that!

The real outfit (without the jacket) was probably someplace in between. Actually, at my friend's place her apartment was so hot that I took off the COWL, too. So I got more and more towards the minimal end as day went on. :-)

Unfrumped, these trousers are from Winners (our TJ Maxx, but not as good). The Vancouver store where they have what is called the "Runway" section with some higher end things. These are from a company called Noir - I believe it is Danish. I've never seen anything of their before. But the quality is lovely.

Una managed to get a slouchy look by sizing up in J. Crew, as did Joy, and Laura with Ann Taylor. Might be worth a try?

I love the contrast of textures -- the relaxed denim and the rich jewel tone of the red, and the tension of the super saturated red with the faded blue denim. The cowl is divine and the trousers serve as a nice anchor to the entire outfit. I love how the beige belt emphasizes your tiny waist . Nice trousers by the way!

  • Mochi replied 11 years ago

You must set the bar very high, Suz, because a lot of outfits you are not sure of I think are 9's or 10's. Here you look great again. Perhaps it's the three disparate colors you may want to tone down? (I like them; just throwing out a suggestion). Instead of the cowl, try something with less contrast such as a grey blouse or sweater under the jacket? But really, it's great and of course the footwear is standout.

In terms of silhouette, I don't think you're capable of making a mistake these days.

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

Mochi, that is a really sharp observation. I think it's the 3 colours that were bugging me and nothing really tying them together. Two didn't look great, either (also not related enough). This is something I need to work on more. It's not just about whether it "goes" sometimes. It has to cohere. This is where scarves or prints can be so helpful.

Thanks, Day Vies - coming from you this is high praise indeed, since you are always so well put together!

How is this not a success?! You look perfect and perfectly happy.

I'm going to admit that sometimes I am so distracted by your amazing hair and pretty face that it's hard to tell what the outfit looks like. So I have to look twice to be sure I'm looking for what you might be worried about in your outfits. If that sounds weird ignore it. I have the same issue with fashion bloggers like Atlantic-Pacific: do I like the outfit, or do I just think anything would look good on her?

  • Beth Ann replied 11 years ago

Yeah, Suz! I love this look on you. You've done well to find such a slouchy silhouette that doesn't overwhelm your petite frame.

  • Asingh replied 11 years ago

Suz, those trousers look super-comfortable to me. Teaming them up with a rich burgundy sweater and denim jacket gives the outfit a trendy vibe. I also like the sweater cuffs peeping out. Super-stylish outfit!

  • Deborah replied 11 years ago

Suz the trousers look so fab! And I think your is the first outfit to receive the "minimal" assessment from Angie:)

I think this outfit works. I like all elements. The sweater to my eye is a little more conservative a piece than the other pieces and I wonder if that might have been bothering you. I'm not suggesting it is not current because this style sweater seems to be available every winter but its perhaps not as fashion forward as the rest of the outfit. Having said that, I think the outfit is a winner, you look great and the new boots are just "wow"!

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

I think you're right, Deborah - that might be part of what was bothering me. It is a new piece from Banana Republic and I am not sorry to have bought it simply because it will be quite versatile. The cowl is removable. So I can wear it as a simple scoop neck, too. But the fitted silhouette is not so fashion forward; you're right.

  • Caro in Oz replied 11 years ago

I love the cowl neckline & colour of the knit on you Suz & think it looks great with the pants & boots. I'm not sure about the denim jacket though (but grain of salt because mine is in the donation box). There is something about the jacket that takes away from the sleekness of the rest of the look imo. You are looking fab:)

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

Caro, I agree. I find I'm not enjoying my denim jackets as much this year. Except my white one, which came in very handy during a summer in the mountains. I'm not ready to purge this, but it didn't feel quite right with the rest of the outfit.

I am studying everyone's fine slouchy looks... in the hopes of determining if this trend is for me. Thanks for discussing the drape, as i think it is critical in doing this successfully. Very well done. The red is great with your hair and complexion!

  • Jaime replied 11 years ago

Whoa! Starting from the bottom up, I love your slouchy trousers with your new (brilliant purchase) booties. I love the color of the top, and I like it with the jacket, and you look wonderful. I saw that Angie suggested keeping the arms scrunched inside the jacket and I think that would be worth trying too. You look amazing!

  • Tina.b replied 11 years ago

Suz, you wear those trousers just beautifully. Love them with the boots! Red looks just fabulous on you as well. Great outfit!

I saw your post about your friend in Saskatoon. I live in Saskatoon also and I laughed about the comment about Kingston being her Miami. Today at -34 here, I would totally concur!

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

Tina, that's unbelievable. WHOA. I feel like such a wuss here, complaining because I had to clear some ice pellets off my windshield this evening....for the first time yet this year!

Shevia, thank you! You are so kind.

I actually did wear the sleeves scrunched inside the jacket IRL (at least for the little time I actually wore the jacket). This was a bit of a quick recreation photo while I had my daughter's cooperation! Her dad was reading stories to her and was feeling just a little impatient with my fashion poses!
