August Challenge Part 3: Dresses, skirts, gingham, and July 4th

In the penultimate of my August challenge posts, here are some dresses and skirts!

Most recently worn: Casual black (in my case, navy) summer (in my case transitional) dress.

This Ralph Lauren cotton sweater dress doesn't get enough wear because it's an awkward weight for my climate -- too warm for summer and not warm enough for winter. It's good for spring (with a topper) or fall. But it was perfect for a cooler, cloudy afternoon at the AC mall. Later on I put on a jacket to go pick up my daughter from an event.

This outfit feels so retro to me somehow. I don't know what era I am evoking here, but whatever it is, I liked wearing this.

Next up, my attempt at a handkerchief hem dress with modern footwear. This was a bit tricky because I don't own a handkerchief hem dress and I forgot the modern footwear. Oh well. My version is a hi-low hem and older sandals. What the heck.

I had a similar problem with the MOTG maxi skirt outfit. I don't do maxis. Ha! So my version is a midi-tube skirt. I got this charcoal VC skirt during NAS.

Gingham! I did a few versions. The Loft top was an absolute workhorse for me this summer. I love the narrow V of the neckline and the dolman sleeve.

I have two July 4th inspired outfits: one I wore on July 1st, and one more recently.

Stay tuned tomorrow for the ensemble FAILS.  ;)

These are fun reditions.  Even if you don't have the exact items, it's interesting to see your version of the ensembles.  It seems like gingham is the one that works best for your current season.

  • carter replied 8 years ago

Oh my! #1/2 are stunning! You really must find more opportunities to wear this dress. I also love the shirt dress on you. I've been looking for one just like this. Sadly, L&T is sold out of this one:-(. Love the gingham on you too. Well, shoot...I love them all!

  • Sal replied 8 years ago

Another stellar rendition.  Agree with Carter that 1/2 are amazing on you.  Whenever the weather is suitable you must wear that dress!

  • Word Lily replied 8 years ago

You look amazing in all of these! I'm sad that 1/2 dress isn't weather-appropriate for more of the year, because it's awesome! And you're really rocking the gingham, too!

That navy dress is the bomb.  You look stunningly fit and gorgeous. I also am wondering why I don't own that chambray shirt dress.  You look great in it, and in that soft blue.

  • Jaime replied 8 years ago

Love the navy dress and sandals! Subtle style shift represented? Also love the gingham top. Umm, and the chambray dress, and the skirt outfit. Honestly you just keep getting better and better!

  • Angie replied 8 years ago

YOU HAVE NEVER LOOKED BETTER THAN YOU DID THIS AUGUST. Wow!  Do I know those cognac sandals?

Killer all round, but #1 is Killer to the power of Killer. The power of simplicity, right there.

You are going to MISS your Summer wardrobe, Suz. I am lamenting with you.

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

Wow, thank you, Angie. You are way too kind. But I will take it. :)

The sandals are in Finds now. I bought them on a whim at a 70% off sale last week. Sandals like this had been a HEWI for me. Rag and Bone makes a slightly higher heeled version with three straps, but I had never seen those in person and didn't dare buy sight unseen. In fact I had given up finding any. The reviews for these Seychelles are awful, but for me they are super comfortable right out of the box!

Thanks also Lisa and Shevia. And Kiwi, Carter, Word Lily and Sara! Again, you're way too kind.

The RL dress is a really great dress. Got it about 3 seasons ago in the spring to travel in. It got quite a bit of wear that year, but since then I have only worn it a few times. It does work okay with tights underneath and layered over a blouse, so that can extend its season a bit.

Angie, I really, really will miss my summer wardrobe. I have to come up with strategies to manage in our cold dark winter. I am busily plotting and thinking now. A couple of new snow boots and a new winter coat are definitely in the mix.

I am not reading the other posts.  I don't want my opinion to be impacted.

The dress in #1 fits you like a dream.  I would be tempted to put up with being warm to wear it more often I looked that good in it.

#6 seems to take everything I love and put it all together.  From the feminine lace look top to the metallic sandal.  this is hands down my favorite of them all and they are all fab.

Of the short outfits, #12 is my favorite.  I like the black and white for the contrast and the scarf really draws the eye to your pretty face.

Great job with the challenge Suz.

  • Evie replied 8 years ago

I truly love your style, Suz! You really seem to understand what works for you. Each of your outfits inspires me. I can hardly wait to see how you will play with your fall items.

  • Maneera replied 8 years ago

    You're doing such a fantastic job of recreating Angie-recommended ensembles. 1, 9, 10, and 12 are amazing!

I love your style so much. You really know what works for your body and your lifestyle....each of these outfits is spectacular with great attention to details. The fit, proportions and length is bang on, and the scarves, bag and sandals you choose for your outfits go so beautifully to complete the look. I'm in serious awe of you, Suz!

  • Jenn replied 8 years ago

I adore your summer style, Suz. #1 is my favorite, but they're all fab. I love how you made the ensembles your own, and your color palette is cool and collected.

  • Ankita replied 8 years ago

Haven't read any comments on this yet coz i want to get my thoughts out first!
    #1 is Divine!
#4 is GORRRRRRRGEOUS! You're like a dream in this outfit <3
#6 this top & jacket pairing is so beautiful together...and will probably be versatile enough to go with a lot of other bottoms :)
Once again #8 is love at first sight for me! The fit of the shirt, it's length and colour is fab...and i adore the bag + heel pairing... you really are unbelievable at styling Suz!
#10 is soooooooo sophisticated and classy, with a touch of sexy... I freaking LOOOOVE it! :)

  • Brooklyn replied 8 years ago

You look seriously stylish in all your renditions. I especially like nos 1/2, 6 and 8. May I ask what are the sandals in no 6?

  • lyn67 replied 8 years ago

O.M.G Suz! Now,-after smelling the salts, here it is showing so very clear your so very hard work which you put in creating your so very great  wardrobe!  All are K2K to me, but nr.1!. What the heck, that is K2(K2K):-)).

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

Aww...lyn, you are my big cheerleader.  Show us some of your summer style so we can cheer you, too, sister!! :)

Thanks for all the lovely comments, everyone. Just wait till you see the fails later today -- that will be a different kind of fun.

Brooklyn, the sandals are by Sofft. This is my second year of buying one of this company's sandals. For me they are all day walking shoes, and I have literally worn through a pair for two summers in a row (but note, I walk upwards of 5 miles a day in hot weather in these sandals).

  • Elly replied 8 years ago

I love the dress, denim, and cognac look-- plus you look great in the tanks with skirts!

  • Murph11 replied 8 years ago

What a beautiful summer you're having in these pieces! So fresh and thoughtfully curated.
I am your Sofft shoe twin, and agree 100% on their comfort. I am also considering purchasing another pair of the Breeze to stash away for next year.

  • Mona replied 8 years ago

WOW! You are doing an amazing job with Angie's ensembles. The dress in #1 is beyond gorgeous on you. Too bad it is not an easy to wear material in our weather.

  • donnat replied 8 years ago

Wow Suz, that navy dress is gorgeous on you. You should try to wear it more. Falll is almost here, so maybe you will have more opportunities for wear. I love #6 the leaf top is so cute, and you look great in gingham.

  • jackiec replied 8 years ago

You are such a good student! Look at all these well studied and perfectly executed ensembles. Certainly inspiring to say the least!!! I will join the chorus for #1 - what an outstanding dress. The silhouette is perfect for you! I hope you can work that one in more often. I've had success with RL in the past. It's a good reminder for me to keep my eyes open for RL at winners. The chambray colour makes you glow. I love the shine of the lighter sandals with this. And I must bookmark those Soft sandals. You have them every year and I always think they look so great. I think my walking sandals are on their way out. These might be a good replacement for next summer. And the tube skirt, ginham, etc all have that special "Suz polish" that make your outfits so happy and approachable (hmm does that make sense?).

Is that the same pendant that lisap purchased? What a special tribute and nice way to remember your mom. I noticed it in your outfit and think it's the perfect finishing touch.

  • abc replied 8 years ago

I want to duplicate pretty much everything in your closet.  I love, LOVE, L O V E your colors, cuts, everything.  You just knock it out of the ballpark every single time, Suz!  What another set of inspiration pics.

And to be really honest I kinda do wanna ask you what you're getting for fall/winter footwear since our requirements are pretty similar.  If I may ask :)

  • Carole replied 8 years ago

I want your closet! Seriously! You look so comfortable and chic in each and every outfit...everything works so well together...taking notes because you are exactly where I want to be in my style journey!

  • Carole replied 8 years ago

Oh, and one more thing, Suz...can I ask you to reveal your style monikers?

  • abc replied 8 years ago

Ditto!  I think we need a guest blog post written by Suz :)  I wanna know ALL your secrets of style !!!!

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

Aww...you are way too flattering and sweet. But I will do a thread on this if I can. Or two. You know me...loquacious is how my 9th grade geography teacher diplomatically put it, LOL.

  • Angie replied 8 years ago

Suz, I'm glad you found those cognac sandals. PERFECT.

With our cool and rainy week, I am reminded by how our weather can be like this for much of the year. I'm thinking of my Fall & Winter style a lot more seriously. Fun!

  • Brooklyn replied 8 years ago

Thanks for the info about the sandals Suz!

  • CocoLion replied 8 years ago

You look amazing in the first dress Suz.  Wow.  It's so simple but perfect.  It's very rich and vintage Calvin Klein, circa Caroline Besset Kennedy, understated with a perfectly fitted, flattering dress.  Love your cognac sandals and the tote.

I also adore the gingham outfits.
