BR Crop High Rise denim -- thanks to Lisa P -- and questions!

Hi, everyone! I haven't been posting or even responding much to posts these days due to an insane work schedule, major family shifts and changes (including a move, and another move to come), and a recent bout of flu that has laid me awfully low and put me even more behind on the work. But I'm starting to get better now and need some fashion assistance!

First, big shout out to Lisa P, who alerted us to these BR high rise jeans on her own thread.

THESE ARE BRILLIANT!!! OMG.

A few things to note. First off, there is the vanity sizing. Size down. I'm in my former BR/Gap/J. Crew size here and it feels generous...normally I am wearing a size or two up from that, these days. The good news: they have a bit of stretch but don't feel too stretchy...I think they will accommodate slight shifts in weight in either direction quite well.

Also -- miracle -- they came in a SHORT (not petite) length, so I ordered them! I also ordered the regular length to compare. The short is almost NEVER available in Canada.

Short is so much better for me than petite because I tend to need the length in the rise. These are super comfy there, no pinching.

My question -- are the shorts short enough to look intentional, or do they need a chop? (Pics 1-10). They are probably just a hair over an inch above my ankle bone? Maybe between an inch and two inches. I am showing them here with several different footwear options so you can see the variation. Flat sneakers, Eliza booties, flat Aquatalias, Paul Greens, dressier heeled Aquatalias.

I also tried the regular. (Pics 12, 13, 14). They are too short to work as full-length jeans. But do they work as that weird new trendy length? Or is that what the shorts are on me? ;)

Honestly, I like these jeans enough that I would keep two pair and if I take the regulars back, I am likely to order a second pair of the shorts! They are that good. I don't even mind the little self-belt, although I can also change it for other belts of course.

Also up -- the BR sweater. (Pic 9/10) I tried a regular in the store (pic 11) a while back but felt it swamped me a bit. This is petite. I've been looking for a replacement for my horribly pilly Plenty sweater for ages. This is not a true duster length, so might not be "the one" - or maybe I should go back to the regular size?

Final question: Do those BR cropped trousers that Angie showed fit like these jeans? Does anyone know? Has anyone compared? If so, if they are the same cut...I am ordering a pair in several colours because they are just fantastic!!

Love the outfits with the blue boots, and the purple is so good on you! I like them in the shorter length.

  • Mirjana replied 4 years ago

Jeans are perfect to you, but purple blouse is really terrific on you. Love, love so much.

  • Laurie replied 4 years ago

Following closely as ordered these as well, in short! Agree about short vs petite being so helpful. You look great - I'm excited to try mine. Definitely prefer the short to regular length.

I am looking at Angie's red pants post vs these, length-wise, and I think you could go up an inch or 2. They look ok with boots that have some heel, but a little too long with the sneakers/flats. This length thing has been very tricky, as I talked about my posts about the Loft wide crops, and the lightweight Eddie Bauer nylon pants.

    Grey sweater is perfect.

  • Dreika replied 4 years ago

The short length jeans look perfect and all shoe options are fantastic with them. Don’t think they need shortening. In my mind dark denim wide crop jeans could be longer than light color summer wide crops, since they would be worn in cooler weather and the length looks seasonably intentional to me, but still cropped. I also like better the regular length cardigan - looks more intentional and trendy, and doesn’t swamp you.

  • Sara L. replied 4 years ago

I can't comment on the length - I'm so confused this year with pant lengths.  I like all your shoe choices with them and I like the sweater as well.  Nice that they actually have short and not just petite in this style.

  • taylor replied 4 years ago

These look wonderful on you !
I like you choices with your footwear also. It looks like these will be great year round . Boots , booties and sandals will work as well as sneaks !

  • replied 4 years ago

I like the shorter length much more - and your footwear all looks good to me ! Pretty grey sweater too :) I picked up a pair of the pants in question in black but haven’t tried them on yet . I went back up to my current reg BR sizing in those .

  • Jorja replied 4 years ago

I also tried the pants in question and found the rise short compared to the high rise wide leg cropped so went back to my usual BR size.

  • nemosmom replied 4 years ago

OK first of all - YAY for seeing you again in spite of illness and crazy work schedule!!

I can't comment on the length of anything, but I will say the jeans look AMAZING on you and with ALL of your shoe options. You are gorgeous in purple (and it goes so beautifully with your consignment find blazer!) I do like the petite cardigan on you for reasons I cannot properly articulate. Is it the length? the scrunched sleeves? I'm not sure, exactly (I know, not very helpful).

So great to see you! Feel better soon!

  • Sal replied 4 years ago

You look fantastic Suz (lovely to see you) and I prefer the shorter ones.  That trendy non PPE but cool length I think is a tricky length but the cropped look intentional and super cool.  That bit of structure helps (as with my midi dress)

Pleased the jeans are a winner!!

  • Bonnie replied 4 years ago

They look great on you. I also ordered BR wide leg jeans (mine are white) and really like them. Like you, I ordered the short length which fit like yours do. Angie said the length looks fine or I could shorten them an inch if I wanted. Because I'm wearing them this winter, I decided the length didn't need alteration. BR seems to have some great jeans lately. I also really like the HR skinny black BR jeans I got in June.

  • rachylou replied 4 years ago

The short are amazing on you!

  • Staysfit replied 4 years ago

    Hi Suz,
I think these look great, and I have a definite preference for the short pair, not the regular.  I am not sure if they should be cut even shorter, but I don't think so, I think the length looks both intentional and flattering.

I am sorry to hear that you had the flu!  UGH!

I hope everything turns out as you hope with your move and with your work!

  • replied 4 years ago

I like both lengths & think that purple is one of the prettiest shades I’ve seen on you, highly flattering.

  • Cardiff girl replied 4 years ago

Can’t answer all your questions but I I really like those jeans on you and you have styled them beautifully.

  • Angie replied 4 years ago

HECTIC! I moved this year - sold and bought, with family emergencies around  the globe - I get it! Suz, you have my empathy and hang in there.

Queen Pedantic About Lengths reporting for duty:

    • Shorter version of the jeans are KILLER. Fine as they are. All the footwear works! Cute purple shirt! Are those purple sneakers in #1? Wave to Inge
    • Longer length of the same jeans are just ever so slightly short to be the trendy new shorter full length. The hems need to touch the top of the vamps of the shoes in flats. Not that I'm splitting hairs or anything.......see Finds for visuals.
    • No, these jeans do not fit like my new red dressy BR wide crops. These are wider and straighter in the waist. My wide crops really go in at the waist at the back, whereas the waistband on these jeans stand far away from my waist, IYKWIM. That said, try them! Don't size down. I found them to run TTS.
  • Gigi replied 4 years ago

The jeans look fantastic on you!

I personally like my crops a little shorter...maybe it's because I'm quite short already (5'2") and am quite sensitive to anything that seems to make me stumpy! So I would have voted to chop another inch off the short inseam.

I think the longer length was a bit too short, as Angie mentioned, and I'm sure that with washing they would probably lose even a touch more length.

I like the shorter length of duster on you, but as mentioned, I am super sensitive to being overwhelmed by clothing and so always go with the shorter size. Maybe you could try to imagine what the longer length would look like with the short-inseam crops to see if there would be too much going on at the hemline if you got the regular?

  • Christina F. replied 4 years ago

Fantastic on you! I prefer the short ones and I see Angie has weighed in on all that and agrees. You have lots of great footwear for the shorter length too.

I tried the red crops, but BR is always too tight on my belly; I’d need to size up but they’re not available right now. This size issue is apparently specific to my shape as others don’t have this problem, and I do consistently, so I would follow Angie’s advice not to size down.

  • Suz replied 4 years ago

Great! Thank you all for your thoughts, sympathy, and more. I hope to be around here more often in a month or so when things settle a bit for me. Exciting news to come in off-topic!

I'm so glad you all like the short crops! I feel as if they work with all my footwear options (more than I showed here -- ) and they feel terrific! I will return the "regular" length ones.

The purple/ burgundy or maybe plum sneakers are Fitflop. I actually wear them mostly as house shoes/ slippers. Love the comfort! Waves to Inge!

The purple silk shirt is Eileen Fisher, purchased on sale last spring to wear this fall. :) I want to build a purple/ lilac capsule over time. It's a colour that works brilliantly on me, as others have noted, and I have almost nothing in it, except for gear.

The BR cropped trousers are selling like hotcakes. My (probable) size in these is almost gone. I did an experiment and orders some in regular and some in petite. We'll see what (if anything) works on these when they arrive. I also ordered the white white leg crop jeans, on sale for less than $50, and if they fit, they will be a great addition. I've been moving more and more in the direction of wide leg crops but getting the fit right has been a challenge -- as soon as I do that, I'm retiring a few skinnies. :)

  • Suz replied 4 years ago

Angie, also thank you for the visuals of the new length. Hard to get it just right, I imagine. And more of a challenge to wear in wet weather. So....

  • Suz replied 4 years ago

Also, Gigi, thanks for your thoughts on the sweater. It's not even available in regular any more online, so I think I'm going to keep this one. Glad you think it works.

  • Angie replied 4 years ago

Actually, Suz. The new shorter full length is GREAT to wear in wet weather! I've been sporting the new trendy shorter full length with these jeans - making the cuffed styles longer than you see in the pic. And I love it!

  • Jane replied 4 years ago

Suz, the shorter ones seem to work best I think. They are stunning, the purple is amazing with them. Wow. Very tempting. You look entirely comfortable in them.

Interesting about the BR trousers, which I’m really tempted by too.

  • K. Period. replied 4 years ago

Angie suggested I try on those jeans so I've actually

    recently

tried both those and the wide leg trousers in store. The jeans are definitely larger in the waist. I am fairly straight and the jeans fit me great (sized down), whereas the trousers (my normal size) pinch me a bit. They are decidedly more fitted in the waist than the old Sloans, but pretty normal for BR's other fits. I would definitely give the trousers a try if I were you!

  • Jaime replied 4 years ago

So much to digest! Start with the clothes - is it wrong that the first thing that wowed me is the purple shirt? Love it on you! I am in a purple mood lately. I also love the shorter version of the jeans and really they look great with every shoe option. Finally wishing you new and great things in the new year :) !

  • Inge replied 4 years ago

Waving to my purple sneaker friend:-)
Angie has the length of the jeans sorted out, and my word you look sooo good in them. And the purple shirt: absolutely divine. I agree that you need more of this colour in your life!-)

P.S. I hope you'll feel 100% again soon, the flu is just so grotty :-((
And good luck with the two moves (WOW!)

  • Style Fan replied 4 years ago

So sorry that you have been sick.  Hope you feel better soon.  Moving is stressful.  We should know.  We have moved multiple times.

I love the purple shirt on you.  Gorgeous colour.  The shorter jeans seem to be the best length.  I have a different BR jean in a longer length.  I plan to wear them in colder weather with wool knee high socks and Blundstones.

  • RobinF replied 4 years ago

I moved this year too, crazy busy! Glad you're feeling better.

It's so nice to find good looking AND comfortable jeans! I won't comment on the length because I am struggling with that this fall but it looks like they fit you perfectly.

  • Elizabeth P replied 4 years ago

Good to see you Suz, sorry to hear you've been ill.  Totally relate to the "busy" thing... I've hardly been on here (at least to participate) as well.

Anyway... the jeans are awesome, and you are tempting me, big time.  I like the length on the shorter pair.  I love the idea of wide legs that won't drag in the snow, and will show off boots.  I also like the smaller cardigan on you.

  • smittie replied 4 years ago

    These fit beautifully!
I do prefer the shorter length. I am still questioning the longer short length. (Eye hasn’t adjusted.)

Gorgeous shirt! Yes, a great colour on you!

  • Janet replied 4 years ago

Those are so cute on you, Suz!

  • Bijou replied 4 years ago

What great jeans, I love the purple shirt too - I can see why you are thinking of adding a purple capsule. All your footwear works, but WOW those NAS Paul Green plaid boots are the bomb!

  • karen13 replied 4 years ago

I’ve missed your posts - I’ve ben busy too, but still lurking a bit. Take care of yourself and I will look for your exciting news. Sounds like you are all sorted, but FWIW, I too prefer the petite jeans and sweater on you. Awesome outfits especially the purple blouse! I recently realized that pants in Short vs Petite are often better for me, as I llike the longer rise better.

  • Suz replied 4 years ago

Thank you all again. Angie, thanks for your explanations re lengths -- I can see how that new in-between length -- sort of how we are hemming the bootcuts (which I still have to get hemmed, ahem...) -- could work in the wet. Certainly better than full length bootcuts or widelegs would!

I wore the new jeans last night and they performed really well. Super comfort, not too much knee bagging (always -- weirdly! -- an issue with wider legs for me) and high happiness factor. How I love a jean that feels great!

Thanks for your sympathies and support!

  • replied 4 years ago

I finally tried on those new cropped trousers - and they are really nice. Completely different cut than the jeans though - and I needed my reg BR size, and even those were not exactly too big.  They are very nicely tailored though and they are in my comtemplation pile. I don't exactly need them but they are a new silhouette.....

  • Suz replied 4 years ago

Thanks, Lisa. We'll see if what I ordered fits...I have my doubts because I could only get petite in a couple of the colours and usually the rise is too short for me in those. But I only intend to keep one or two pair at most even if they do fit. So...I ordered my new usual size, up from my old usual size. But even then....

  • Laura replied 4 years ago

Suz, I'm glad you found a pair of jeans to lift your spirits! They look smashing on you. Hoping some of the pants options work just as well, too! I've ordered the full-length jeans in a short length and eagerly await their arrival. I love any item that swooshes when I walk and have high hopes for these!

  • Laurie replied 4 years ago

Got my BR wide crop jeans, and they are too big in the size I've been in lately. So, yes - size down. As I took them out of the bag I didn't think I would like them, but they do feel really good on! I will try the size down, and see.  They look nothing like the stock photo on the BR site. The fabric is darker and heavier than it appears on the model. Almost like a totally different product. Odd.
They are hitting me maybe 1/2" longer than on you, Suz. I am 5'4" - how tall are you? I will like them with boots.

  • Dottie replied 4 years ago

Suz, thanks for the great review! Can you compare these pants to the J.Crew Rayner jean trouser?

  • Suz replied 4 years ago

Dottie...I can compare. The Raynor jean trouser was a slightly "crisper" fabric and because it was a trouser front with side pockets, a bit dressier in feel. Which I did like, I must admit. Also, it lacked visible stitching. So that was a denim culotte or trouser more than a "jean." Mine were shorter, too, because I had them hemmed. I have retired mine recently because the pockets were doing odd things on me and they bagged out continually. So by the end of a day I wasn't feeling fab in them.

Laurie, I am 5'4" also with fairly short legs. But remember, I ordered the shorts vs. regular.

Laura -- hope those work out for you! Please let us know!

  • unfrumped replied 4 years ago

Super cute on you. Short length.
