In the bag: NY trip capsule (Pic heavy)

In light of Nadya's recent question, here is my recent NY trip capsule. Trip was for 3.5 days and 4 nights.

First, the bag. It is 21" by 11.5". Too big to carry on some flights but not others. (It was within guidelines when we bought it, but guidelines change.) In fact, I checked this bag, but if I were flying overseas I might have brought it on board.

Inside, I had:

#2: 3 dresses
#3  3 toppers
#4  2 shorts, 1 trouser, 2 skirts
#5  7 (!!!) tops
#6  5 pairs of shoes (one worn on plane)  2 bags. Also jewellery, not pictured.
#7  3 Ts

Not pictured: PJs, underwear (3 bras, about 8 bottoms), Toiletries bag (large) plus small makeup bag, large belt, and Trench coat. Also, cobalt bag, brought on plane, and small computer tote bag.

I wore everything except the 3 ts, one of the toppers, 1 dress, 2 of the tops, the sneakers, and the pants. I had brought some of these items not knowing exactly what the weather would be or whether we might go for a bike ride or something very casual. I actually bought the pink top on the trip.

My bag was full...but not bursting.

WIW:

#8: for plane ride and lunch on first day.
BR shell, VC tube skirt, Reiker sandals, RL bag.

#9: For dinner first night and last night.
Cleo petites dress, SE sandals, Danier clutch.  On the last night I wore my gold slingbacks for a change.

#10: For shopping, sightseeing wtih hubby. This is the one the streetstyle photographer snapped.

CM shorts, AT silk shell, Reiker sandals, RL bag.

#11/ 12: For theatre and dinner with hubs.

VC tube skirt, Loft peplum top, Reiker sandals, RL bag, Biba vintage kimono. It was raining hard off and on so there was also a Marimekko umbrella involved. And I needed the topper in the AC.

#13: For brunch and shopping with Mochi and Zap, and then dinner with Mr. Suz.

BR Armani neckline dress, Danier clutch, SE sandals. I actually wore the black sandals during the day, but took a break with these at night. (For me, a change is as good as a rest!)

#14: For hot day shopping/ lunch.

BR silk top (pink, but not coral OR see through, as you might guess from this photo, oy!); Mexx shorts, Reiker sandals, RL bag.

#15: Trip home.

BR silk top, VC tube skirt, Mexx ink cardi, Reiker sandals, RL bag.

Apologies for the long-windedness. I post mainly because quite a few people mentioned they really like trip capsules in Dana's thread. So...for those of you who love them, here it is.

    Great choices, Suz. Beautiful combinations.

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

Despite my tendency to go in complete denial whenever I see packing posts, this one is so beautiful and clear I couldn't resist. Thanks Suz (and, of course, you look terrific in all your combinations)!

  • ElleH replied 10 years ago

Beautiful Suz. You got snapped by a streetstyle photographer. What a compliment:)

Thanks so much for posting this Suz! It makes me feel like I can travel a little bit with you! :) #8 is my favourite :)

  • carolbee replied 10 years ago

Thanks Suz, I am one of those people that just about inhale packing posts as a dedicated carry on only person Great capsule, it is amazing how much you can fit in a carry-on. I understand that you took some extra items as you were unsure of your actual activities, but its interesting as this amount of clothes would actually be enough for just about any length holiday (assuming its not going to be super cold).

My next challenge will be July next year when we will be in Europe, probably a couple of weeks in Italy, where I am hoping the weather will be warm, followed by a 10 day cruise around Spitsbergen, where it will be freezing. Our trip to Bali and Flores later this month will be a breeze, as only need warm weather clothes.

  • bj1111 replied 10 years ago

suz, this is such a tight capsule and can be stretched to a few weeks if you didn't get bored!

  • sarah replied 10 years ago

Wow, just loving your blue, whitem and berry capsule. And I'm so jealous of your summer top collection! It's such a struggle for me...You look terrific, from head to toe. LOVE the new sandals.

  • Beth Ann replied 10 years ago

Suz, this is the most beautiful travel capsule I have ever seen.  Every item is a stunner.  I love the amount of color you've managed to use!  This really highlights your fine wardrobe-building skills.

  • columbine(erin) replied 10 years ago

I love travel capsule posts and yours is beautiful! These happen to be my favorite colors, too, I'm inspired. :)

  • Eliza replied 10 years ago

Great capsule and fun to see the items laid out as well as on in beautiful outfits. Quite an achievement if you were comfortable in New York, especially last week!

  • ManidipaM replied 10 years ago

Another inhaler of packing and capsule posts, and I had actually been *looking* for this one from you! Thank you!

This is absolutely inspirational. You look gorgeous, eyecatching and understated all at once. CHIC!

And I love how much colour and fun and pattern you incorporated! The cobalt is so stunningly flattering, yet due to the coherence of your capsule, also behaves as a neutral! Such fun. Looking at these I now think everyone needs a signature colour or two like that for FFBO items.

Very masterful, exciting colour coordination too. No wonder you are turning heads and catching the camera lenses!

This is especially impressive given the uncertainty about weather and activities.

    Thanks again for sharing.

  • Nadya replied 10 years ago

Wow! Thank very much for sharing this, Suz. That's one great capsule and I really appreciate the visual of what you fit in your carryon. Thank you, thank you!

P.S. your post really shows the value in having color themes in your wardrobe. I know when I started doing that many years ago, packing got a lot easier because my clothes mixed and matched fairly easily.

  • harmonica replied 10 years ago

wow! So organized, neat and fun!

  • replied 10 years ago

Great capsule! I love seeing how these are put together.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Thanks, everyone! To paraphrase the inimitable MaryK, I felt super happy about the way this capsule turned out.

I had a bit more than I'd normally have taken for such a short trip. But lack of certainty about weather and activities made me want to bring more rather than less. I knew in the heat (and possible rainstorms) I would need changes of clothes.

Nadya, you are so right that this shows the value of a coherent colour plan. Sticking to a few key colours was key, because just as Manidipam says, this allowed a colour (cobalt) to function as a neutral. I find I'm really enjoying that this season.

Eliza, I was super comfortable! The heat didn't seem as bad as we'd expected. It was hot, certainly....but no hotter than it gets at home, and we had air conditioning in our place, which is more than we have at home. So for us it was bearable.

Thanks, Columbine! We have similar colour favourites.

Beth Ann, I should have known you would like it, full as it is of cobalt! :-)

Sarah, tops are a major problem of mine as well, so I put on a truly concerted search this spring to find a few more flattering ones. I'm pretty pleased with the styles I eventually settled on. I now understand more what I need to be looking for.

Thanks, BJ! Since I had more than I actually needed, I think I could have gone at least another week without getting bored here. Actually, this is pretty much the contents of my summer wardrobe, apart from a few more casual items and some longer-sleeved shirts, so no wonder I say that, LOL.

Carolbee, thank you, and I agree -- the amount of clothes I brought could have done for a much longer holiday, and really were excessive for my actual time frame. I wish you luck for your long vacation. I agree completely that the biggest challenge is packing for widely varied weather conditions in one smal suitcase. I find that super, super difficult. Please post your ideas for us and we'll help with feedback.

Lyn, one of these days you will be on your own trip! It will happen!

Angie, thank you for that title! I will wear it proudly along with my sandals.

Thanks, Caro, Elle, Shevia, Ceit, Pil, Merwoman!

  • Parsley replied 10 years ago

Thanks for showing us how it's done, Suz!
That is a SUPERB travel capsule and I love that it incorporates plenty of color. I pack light, but I usually do it by going with almost nothing but neutrals. You've inspired me to try to take more color on my next trip. I may be a shameless copycat and use cobalt as one of my colors!

  • Debora replied 10 years ago

Suz, thanks so much for posting this! I'm another one who soaks up packing posts and yours is a treasure trove of good advice. I am studying it closely in preparation for my upcoming trip. I am so in awe of how chic, yet functional, your capsule is. You have mastered the art of stylish travel! Thanks for your offer of restaurant suggestions in your earlier post. PM'ing you now!

  • Susie replied 10 years ago

I too love the packing posts! You did a fabulous job with this capsule! You look both chic and comfortable and your smile says the happiness factor was high!

  • lyn67 replied 10 years ago

Love capsule threads, your's is beyond fabulous!!! LOVE ALL YOUR  PIECES!!! It's a treat just looking at them. Bravo, Suz-very well done!

  • Sara L. replied 10 years ago

I love packing capsule posts too!  I have no trips planned other than camping trips, but I'm hoping that I'll learn from reading these posts so when I do have a trip, I'll be a better packer.

  • kkards replied 10 years ago

your list was so well thought out- everything fit together so well! i always think i will get myself organized and have a put together travel capsule, but it never seems to go that way!

  • Kim replied 10 years ago

You know, my problem is not how much I can stuff in the carry on (cause I can get a LOT in there) it's the weight restriction!  I can easily go over on that and then I have to take stuff out, decide what to cut, go back, weigh it again...Cut some more...LOL

I'm doing carry on only when I go to England for 10 days in the fall (with no laundry facilities unless I wash in the sink) and I'm wondering about my packing already. I'm really thinking 2 coats will be a good idea since that's what will be seen mostly in the pictures.  And what about my gear???  Ugh, those trainers are big and bulky but I'm wearing my tall boots on the plane so they'll have to fit in there too, or I've got to find another way to work out (in bare feet...)

I'm bringing another suitcase but it will be full of my daughters fall/winter clothing as she's moving over there at the end of the summer and I'm going to be a good mommy and give up packing space to help her out...

She's not fooled though, she KNEW that would mean I'll have an empty suitcase coming back...Can't have that! Must fill it up...LOL!!!
