Banff capsule: Playing with the LBD

I am bringing my jersey LBD with me to Banff and yesterday played around with some options for it. I doubt I would wear these at the resort, to be honest...but there will be a few outings into Calgary and I'll be having dinner with a friend there when I arrive and so on.

Of course I can also dress the dress up more significantly - these were attempts to make it a bit more casual.

1. Worn with fuchsia top and Mary K's wonder scarf.

2. Worn with white denim.

3. Angie's black dress with earthy accessories formula.

Proportions okay? Everything else all right? Thank you for looking!

All three looks work for me. What a versatile dress! I think my favourite is #2, it's really fresh looking. Love the colours in the scarf next to the white.

  • Tanya replied 11 years ago

Everything is perfect Suz! I also adore #2. I love seeing you so confident and stylish.

  • harmonica replied 11 years ago

All of these are FAB! You are actually living in closet nirvana - no reason to worry! My love goes to #1, but all are wonderful and have different vibes, #1 as the dressiest and #3 as most casual. The fuchsia top and scarf are such gorgeous colours on you

ETA: and you show us why the LBD is a true classic that can be worn at any occasion. The three pics are a great tutorial!

    all 3 looks are nice

  • Astrid replied 11 years ago

Perfect, perfect, perfect! I love the fuchsia vest over the dress in #1 and the scarf is great of course. My favourite is the third outfit, perfect relaxed casual chic.

  • lyn67 replied 11 years ago

OH, the LBD, isn't it versatile enought???????? Trully fab. all the 3! You don't have to pack a suitcase, now it all fits in a bag:-)

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

Perfection Suz! Are you discovering you have a much more versatile and cohesive/put together wardrobe than you thought? 'cause it certainly looks fantastic!

  • Diana replied 11 years ago

Super remixing! I love that you've managed to get three very different vibes out of a single dress. (And of course there is always the dressed-up route too, just in case you get invited to a last minute ball or something...) Are you feeling better about your travel packing? I have been really impressed with everything I've seen so far!

  • celia replied 11 years ago

The look #3 is absolutely fantastic, I love it!
The other two looks are also beautiful looks and will do exactly what you want them to do.

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

Thank you, ladies. Yes, I am feeling much better about my travel outfits. I think from this trip and the last one I have learned that I ALWAYS panic, and sometimes, it's true, I really do need to do a bit of shopping before a trip, but usually one or two items will tie everything together. In this case the black sandals (I didn't own any) and the white jacket really helped. I could also use a pair of black wedge pumps of some kind in case of really dressy event in cooler weather, but I will just have to hope nothing like that comes up!

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

So happy for you Suz that it all came together!

  • texstyle replied 11 years ago

These are all great looks - I really like #2 and #3 - and will have to try copying your version of #2 since I have a knit lbd and white denim jacket in my closet. If it were just cool enough here to wear a jacket.

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

KILLER looks. All of them :)

I especially love #1! You must wear more magenta, Suz. That's a YLF order.

  • Joy replied 11 years ago

All three LBD outfits look great! I could also see you using your black jacket from your other post with this dress, maybe even popping the sequined top over the dress. If it's too cool for sandals, wouldn't your Reports also work with this dress? #2 and #3 especially?

  • Beth Ann replied 11 years ago

Beautiful and versatile, Suz! Love the way you've layered in #1 especially!

  • modgrl replied 11 years ago

    Fabbers!! X3!! Love them all!!

  • replied 11 years ago

I love your new sandals! I think I need some black sandals, too. Every now and then I come up with an outfit where nothing else will do!

Anyway! Fabulous outfits. One and three could also be worn with our ON jacket if weather required it. You're doing such a great job Suz! Don't despair! ;)

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

Yeah, Claire - I was finding that without the black on the bottom I didn't feel grounded if I was wearing black. Weird.

  • rae replied 11 years ago

These all work to my eye as well - love 3 especially!

  • Aida replied 11 years ago

All three are just lovely! Does the ink blue cardigan from your Niagra falls post work with dresses? That would be a lovely moody-colors combo. Loving how the sleeveless top looks with this dress, that seems like it could be a great variation outfit to have ready to fall back on.

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

Thanks again, everybody - you are so helpful. Aida, once again you come up with great ideas! I do think the ink blue cardi will work with this. I just tried the sleeveless top with the dress on a lark, thinking - well - this way I don't have to bring another skirt! And it works well enough, I think. This dress also makes a brilliant jumper (not in the UK sense but the NA sense - a dress over a crisp top). So I can layer it that way as well. And I can wear the fuchsia top open with no scarf, more like a vest.

  • Kari replied 11 years ago

Oh goodness, these are phenomenal, Suz! First of all, that LBD is cut ridiculously well. Second - I LOVE how you've layered over it on #1. This combination put me on the same wavelength as Joy's suggestion - what about wearing that sequined top, the one you tried on with your jeans, over the dress too?

  • Deborah replied 11 years ago

Suz that looks like the ultimate LBD. It works so well in each of these outfits. Perfection.

  • Freckles replied 11 years ago

Three stunning looks. I absolutely love how you've taken a favourite piece and made it look so different in these combinations.

    Adore your shoes btw....

Suz, I was trying to remember the designer of this dress but have come up with nothing. It is a local company isn't it?

  • Sveta replied 11 years ago

Actually #3 should work for the resort setting well: it has that relaxed vibe to it due to the striped sweater wrapped casually around your shoulders.
    Other looks work well too.

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

Thanks, everybody. It really IS the dress doing all the work. I would say it is the ultimate LBD - and I got it for FREE from a friend who wasn't wearing it. When it arrived it was almost max-length on me. I had it hemmed...when midis were not yet "in." I now wish I had left it just below the knee rather than just above the knee. However, it really IS the ultimate LDB. It has a jewel neckline, rather large armholes that yet do not reveal my bra, and curves nicely at the waist. Is slim fitting but does not cling in the least. So it goes over top of blouses and Ts without too much rumpling. It can be belted and worn with a jacket (I wore it that way in the post that inspired Vicki and several others, with a denim jacket and scarf). And in summer it is super cool.

The company is Comrags. They used to make this dress as a regular thing; I'm not sure they do any more. But I love it and fear the day it wears out. Which may be soon, given the fact that I probably wear it once a week all year long! It is the ONLY article of clothing in my wardrobe (apart from denim jackets) that is truly cross seasonal that way.

i had to log back in to say every one of these is awesome!

  • HelenInCanada replied 11 years ago

    YES to all, Suz!

  • Mochi replied 11 years ago

I also love #1 especially. It's amazing. I never got to congratulate you on your writing residency. That's so awesome. Since you look so elegant and pulled together, now you have nothing to worry about but your work, haha. I'm sure that will go great as well. Hope we hear occasional updates, you fab woman.

  • Meredith1953 replied 11 years ago

    Suz,
I love all three ways you have styled the LBD. I am going to try some of these ideas with MY lbd!

  • ManidipaM replied 11 years ago

Good heavens, I nearly died over #1 --- not just the magenta as a brilliant touch but also the pretty bead-trimmed scarf! --- but that would have been a mistake because #3 just blew me away. (That 'black dress for summer' post that Angie did has produced so many YLF renditions, I think it is safe to file it as one of the most useful posts ever!)

Suz, this series of outfits is the most convincing and compelling pictorial evidence I've ever encountered of the NEED for a simple black sheath in a woman's wardrobe!

  • CocoLion replied 11 years ago

You could be Angie's sister in #2! I think they all work very well and am impressed that they are built around the same dress.

  • Vicki replied 11 years ago

Posting sooooo late here, Suz, and you know what...better late than never, because I learn from you every time I see one of your WIWs. ;)

I love #1 and #3 and find all them so uniquely different and styled, from a bit dressy to smart casual. Bravo! Angie has given you your orders Queen Magenta.

  • rachylou replied 11 years ago

Wait, are you already gone and back, Suz? I missed these too. I, like Vicki, like #1 and #3. Those black sandals are so cute btw! I'd wear #3 right now myself.

As for #2, *we all know* I have poison eye for white.
